The authors use confirmatory factor analysis to investigate the psychosocial dimensions of work environments relevant to health outcomes, in a representative sample of five U.S. metropolitan areas. Through an aggregated inference system, scales from Schwartz and associates' job scoring system and from the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) were employed to examine two alternative models: the demand-control model of Karasek and Theorell and Johnson's demand-control-support model. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the two models. The two multidimensional models yielded better fi

Results of moderated structural equation modeling analyses provided strong support for the hypothesis: 15 of the 16 hypothesized interactions were significant for task enjoyment and 13 of the 16 interactions were significant for organizational commitment. This article analyses four emerging refugee support organisations in Austria, founded before the so-called refugee crisis in 2015. It argues that these organisations have managed to occupy a middle space between mainstream NGOs and social movements with structures of inclusive governance, a high degree of autonomy, personalised relationships with refugees, and radical critique combined with service delivery. Based on interviews with the founders of each organisation, we show that their previous NGO and social movement experience formed a springboard for the new initiatives. It not only allowed

A generic but flexible decision-support system for domestic water demand forecasting and management (DFMS) has been developed as part of a highlyintegrated decision-support system for river-basin management. Its purpose is to provide water-resources planners with the facilities for estimating future water demand for any demand region and time period, having regard to the possibility of introducing demand-management measures. The system has the capability of predicting domestic-water demand by various methods according to the data availability, computing conservation effectiveness due to the im

This research aims to enhance the essential forecasting and optimisation techniques that underlie these systems. This is first done by applying the method of Dynamic Linear Models in order to provide sales forecasts of a higher accuracy compared with current methods. Secondly, the method of Support Vector Regression is used to forecast future competitor prices. This new technique aims to produce forecasts of greater accuracy compared with th

Commercial sugarcane farming requires large quantities of water to be delivered to the fields. Ideal irrigation schedules are produced indicating how much water to be supplied to fields considering multiple objectives in the farming process. Software packages do not fully account for the fact that the ideal irrigation schedule may not be met due to limitations in the water distribution network. This dissertation proposes the use of mathematical modelling to better understand water supply and demand management on a commercial sugarcane farm. Product forecasts are critical input into procurement, inventory, marketing decisions etc. The use of human judgement is common in the real-world forecasting practice. Human intervention occurs mainly to incorporate contextual information. The literature suggests that a forecasting support system (FSS) that systematically guides the forecaster in applying judgement can improve forecast accuracy. Guidance is the core component of such an FSS. A behaviourally-informed FSS (BIFSS), as defined in this thesis, is an FSS that aims to provide systematic guidance to inform the judgement of a forecaste

Simple functional forms can lead to unrealistic projections by failing to capture changes in income elasticities of demand. We adopt as our benchmark the recently introduced AIDADS demand system and compare it with several alternative demand systems currently in widespread use in CGE models.
