The issue of sustainability, which is an increasingly important consideration in the day-to-day operations of businesses, needs to be addressed in the context of supplier selection. The use of multi-criteria approaches in decisions concerning the selection of sustainable suppliers can be a valuable approach for helping to resolve the complexity of this process. A systematic review of the literature highlighted gaps in the research in this area, such as the lack of a detailed description of multi-criteria methods, as well as a scarcity of sustainability criteria that take into account the three main perspectives (Economic, Environmental, and Social). This work describes the development and real case application of a DEMATEL (Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) and ANP (Analytic Network Process) fuzzy modeling technique for the selection of sustainable suppliers. The methodological approach used in the research was quantitative, descriptive, and empirical. The modeling and simulations were performed using MATLAB®. Incorporation of the specificities of the process of selection of sustainable suppliers makes the model a useful tool for use by both businesses and researchers concerned with the issue of sustainability. A systematic review of the published research highlights the main state-of-art methods and criteria used for the selection of green and sustainable suppliers. The model is described in a framework highlighting each step of the application. It was subsequently applied by a major glass packaging company, where the supply chain coordinator agreed to assist in the research. The outputs of the second phase of the model showed that the Economic cluster was most important and interacted with the Environmental cluster, while the Social cluster remained practically inert, without interactions with the other clusters. For the three perspectives, the three most influential criteria were as follows: cost, compliance, and quality (Economic perspective); environmental certifications/ISO 14001, reuse/recovery, and pollution control (Environmental perspective); and stakeholder rights, respect for policies, and encouragement of the development of self-sustainable recycling programs (Social perspective). Finally, a supplier was selected using the framework presented, and the criteria that most influenced the decision were highlighted. The procedure developed here offers a tool to assist businesses searching for sustainable solutions, as well as researchers in the scientific community concerned with the development of knowledge in this area.

The convenience of traffic will be the key factor for the development of economic and international trade. Taiwan is surrounding by sea. Shipping policy is crucial to the development of national containership. Due to increased operating costs, the country containership team development is limited during recent years. The problem of flagging out has become a test of our containership team development facing seriously. The main reasons of flagging out will be the shipowners try to reduce operating costs in response to operation of the regional problems, or an attempt to reduce government control. The main motivation for this study is to explore the ship set membership system. By gathering ship domiciled system, to view the current status of the absence of the country containership industry development and explore the factors of flagging-out. We try to develop a specific response strategies for the relevant government units ship domiciled system specification develop the shipping development policy reference. DEMATEL (Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) has been applied in many situations, such as marketing strategies, control systems, safety problems, developing the competencies of global managers and group decision making. It has been incorporated into other methods such as ANP (Analytical Network Process), MCDM (Multiple Criteria Decision Making), fuzzy set theory, etc., to vitalize these traditional methods and explore new applications for the hybrid methods. DEMATEL models the influences of components of a system with an initial direct relation matrix. Influences of components can ripple transitively to other components, which is modeled by raising the initial direct relation matrix to powers. The total influence is computed by summing up matrices of all powers based on the assumption that the matrix raising to the power of infinity would converge to zero. The current paper shows that raising the initial relation matrix to the power of infinity may not converge to zero and hence total influence may not converge. The current paper also shows that our revised DEMATEL guarantees that the initial direct-relation matrix to infinite power will converge to zero and the total influence can be obtained accordingly. The newly developed approach is illustrated with numerical examples.

Full textThe substantial growth in population, increasing urbanization, overload in the consumption of infrastructures and energy, environmental impacts, and investments made in technological development constitute major challenges in what concerns the management and development of cities that aim to improve the citizens’ well-being and quality of life. The concern to find a balance between these factors makes the decision-making process more difficult and, therefore, it is essential to analyze the determinants of smart cities (i.e., cities that intend to be socially involved and habitable, economically and environmentally sustainable, with technology and innovation playing a fundamental role in this regard). Considering the principles of the Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) approach, the present study aims to combine cognitive mapping techniques and the DEcision MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method, in order to develop a multicriteria model that helps managers in the decision-making process, as well as in the analysis of determinants of smart cities. The research carried out allowed for the identification of these determinants and respective cause-effect relationships, using a panel of experts with experience and knowledge on the subject under analysis. The results were validated by both the panel of experts and by the councillor responsible for mobility and municipal assignments of the Évora City Council, who certified that the developed evaluation system is a tool that supports the decision-making process in what concerns smart cities. The main advantages and limitations of the present study are also subject of analysis and discussion.

Few studies have discussed the factors affecting hotel appraisal or proposed strate-gies to help improve hotel evaluation efficiency. The purpose of this study is to address this problem, using Modified Delphi Method to develop the initial questionnaire and DEMATEL (decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory) to construct multi-criteria hotel appraisal system and finally present network relationship map (NRM) between the factors. According to opinions of the expert-appraisers, there are 4 dimensions and 12 criteria are included as the dominated factors for hotel appraisal. The NRM further illu-strates the influential relationships which determine the priority order in the hotel ap-praisal process. The dimension of “Income Capitalization Approach (discount cash flow approach)” emerges as the first priority to be considered and followed by “Cost Ap-proach”, “Appraisal premise” and “Market survey & analysis”. The same rule can be applied to the criteria in each dimension. For instance, in “Income Capitalization Ap-proach (discount cash flow approach)”, the influential order is “Total income”, “Total cost” and “Discount cash rate”, implying the appraisal consideration priority. In “Cost approach”, the priority pattern is “Maintenance”, “Building cost” and “Land cost”; in “Appraisal premise”, the order is “Client data”, “Appraisal purpose” and “Appraisal conditions”; and in “Market survey & analysis’’ the order is “Property condition”, “Supply & demand analysis” and “Neighborhood & location”. In general, this research successfully demonstrated the advantages of the novel combination of Modified Delphi Method and DEMATEL and present useful strategies for effective hotel evaluation patterns. The result thus can be useful reference for both the academic and practical fields, and especially valuable for those professionals, such as real estate appraisers, hotel developers and investors.

Business markets are going to be globalization by new marketing and distribution channels in order to satisfy customer demand. Nowadays Supply Chain has become a key strategy in global competitive era. To determine what key factors or indexes plays an important procession for affecting operation and management in the enterprise, comparing with references, this study aims to create the evaluate system of business logistics activities. Therefore, this paper combined one of the multicriteria decision making method (MCDM) known as DEMATEL and importance-improvable analysis which is revised from importance-performance analysis. By applying this method, the independence relation of each factor in four different industries was discoverd. The result shows the complex independence in each logistics activities, especially the criteria “information and communication cost” and “delivery on time” have been an important factors. In all four different industries, these two criteria are selected in high rank. According to futher analysis, this study suggests that each industries has diverse priority and key factor, this also means companies could follow the priority of criteria to improve or enhance their business logistics operation efficiency in keen competitive markets.

The subjects and practices on SCM have flourished since 1990s. Enterprises have realized that a large amount of direct and indirect profits can be obtained from effective and efficient supply chain management practices. The supplier selection has a great impact on integration degree of supply chain relationship. In this study, the fuzzy DEMATEL (Decision making trial and evaluation laboratory) method was used to find out the factors which influence other factors the most in supplier selection. The fuzzy DEMATEL questionnaire was designed and sent to 17 professional purchasing personnel in electronic industry. Seventeen of the questionnaires responded were effective and analyzed. From the results of this study, it was found that technology ability was criteria with much influence. In addition, stable delivery of the goods was the evaluation criteria with the strongest connection with other criteria.
