Abstract:
Decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) is one of the multicriteria decision-making methods based on asymmetric linguistic comparison matrices that has received a great deal of attention, and it is a widely used method in various fields. One of the drawbacks of DEMATEL is a convergence problem that may occur when the infinite sum of normalized influences does not converge. Based on the observations of some examples, the new concept of DEMATEL, the DEMATEL of a finite sum of influences (FSI DEMATEL), is proposed. Instead of an infinite sum, a finite sum of influences is used in FSI DEMATEL so that the convergence problem is avoided. The advantage is that FSI DEMATEL can handle more decision-making problems than the DEMATEL. It can also be used for fuzzy evaluations. FSI DEMATEL can be used as the multicriteria decision-making method to evaluate the relationships between the factors in many different fields.

Abstract:
Decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) is considered as an effective method for the identification of cause-effect chain components of a complex system. It deals with evaluating interdependent relationships among factors and finding the critical ones through a visual structural model. Over the recent decade, a large number of studies have been done on the application of DEMATEL and many different variants have been put forward in the literature. The objective of this study is to review systematically the methodologies and applications of the DEMATEL technique. We reviewed a total of 346 papers published from 2006 to 2016 in the international journals. According to the approaches used, these publications are grouped into five categories: classical DEMATEL, fuzzy DEMATEL, grey DEMATEL, analytical network process- (ANP-) DEMATEL, and other DEMATEL. All papers with respect to each category are summarized and analyzed, pointing out their implementing procedures, real applications, and crucial findings. This systematic and comprehensive review holds valuable insights for researchers and practitioners into using the DEMATEL in terms of indicating current research trends and potential directions for further research.

Abstract:
DEMATEL is a popular approach in multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) to understand the influence relationship between elements. In addition, the result of DEMATEL is used as the input in other approaches to explore further applications. However, DEMATEL may fail to derive the reasonable total influence matrix, i.e., all positive elements. Hence, DEMATEL uses a special normalization method to avoid that situation. It has been reported that selecting the normalization method plays a critical role after we determine the research method. This paper compares different normalization methods in DEMATEL and proposes a novel formula to derive the total influence matrix when the conventional DEMATEL cannot obtain a correct result. The numerical examples demonstrate how different normalization methods generate contradicted results of DEMATEL and the proposed approach ensures a reasonable result. In addition, we also shed light on further applications based on this paper.

Abstract:
PurposeKey performance indicators (KPIs) of maintenance systems serve as benchmarks to workers and organizations to compare their goals for decision-making purposes. Unfortunately, the effects of one KPI on the other are least known, restraining decisions on prioritization of KPIs. This article examines and prioritizes the KPIs of the maintenance system in a food processing industry using the novel Taguchi (T) scheme-decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method, Taguchi–Pareto (TP) scheme–DEMATEL method and the DEMATEL method.Design/methodology/approachThe causal association of maintenance process parameters (frequency of failure, downtime, MTTR, MTBF, availability and MTTF) was studied. Besides, the optimized maintenance parameters were infused into the DEMATEL method that translates the optimized values into cause and effect responses and keeping in view the result of analysis. Data collection was done from a food processing plant in Nigeria.FindingsThe results indicated that downtime and availability have the most causal effects on other criteria when DEMATEL and T-DEMATEL methods were respectively applied to the problem. Furthermore, the frequency of failure is mostly affected by other criteria in the key performance indication selection using the two methods. The combined Taguchi scheme and DEMATEL method is appropriate to optimize and establish the causal relationships of factors.Originality/valueHardly any studies have reported the joint optimization and causal relationship of maintenance system parameters. However, the current study achieves this goal using the T-DEMATEL, TP-DEMATEL and DEMATEL methods for the first time. The applied methods effectively ease decisions on prioritization of KPIs for enhancement.

Abstract:
Decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) is a widely accepted factor analysis algorithm for complex systems. The rationality of the evaluation scale is the basis of sound DEMATEL decision-making. Unfortunately, the existing evaluation scales of DEMATEL failed to reasonably distinguish and describe the positive and negative influences between factors. Generally, the positive and negative influences between factors should be considered at the same time. In other words, negative influence between factors should not be directly ignored, which is improper and unrealistic. To better address this issue, we extend the evaluation scale of DEMATEL. We also integrate the scale-based group DEMATEL method with probabilistic linguistic term sets (PLTSs) to increase its effectiveness, which allows experts to express incomplete and uncertain linguistic preferences in DEMATEL decision-making. An experts’ subjective weight adjustment method based on the similarity degree between PLTSs is introduced to determine experts’ weights. Finally, an algorithm of probabilistic linguistic-based group DEMATEL method with both positive and negative influences is summarized, and an example is used to illustrate the proposed method and demonstrate its superiority. Our results demonstrate that the method proposed in this paper deals reasonably with realistic problems.

Abstract:
Concerns about scientific publications have been proliferating in Indonesia. Consequently, the number of published journals in e-journal has been rapidly increasing over the past few years. The growing trend of e-journal hence requires a decision support system in its application. The DSS will help the reviewers in determining the eligibility of an article in the journal’s verification process. Several DSS methods such as DEMATEL, SAW, and TOPSIS, among others, are proposed to provide an effective means in the process. This research aims to present a solid comparison of two combined methods, DEMATEL-SAW and DEMATEL-TOPSIS, as they overcome each method’s shortcomings, in determining the eligibility of an article. The eligibility criteria have been determined as a guide. The calculation results show that the DEMATEL-SAW has a relatively higher degree of accuracy compared to that of DEMATEL-TOPSIS when fewer criteria variables are included, whereas the DEMATEL-TOPSIS method has a higher degree of consistency when being utilized on a variable with more criteria

Abstract:
Infrastructure systems, such as bridges, are perpetually vulnerable to natural hazards such as seismic events, flooding, and landslides. This study aims to determine the relevant parameters required to increase the seismic resilience of bridge infrastructure based on the decisions of experts and prior research. To this end, the crisp DEMATEL (decision-making and trial evaluation laboratory) and rough DEMATEL methods are employed. Rough DEMATEL is a supplement to crisp DEMATEL that incorporates rough theory to handle ambiguity. The efficacies of the rough and crisp DEMATEL methods are then compared between the two approaches. This study found the most crucial seismic-resilience variables for bridges. The outcomes of this study reveal the significant order and cause-and-effect relationships. This research can assist transportation engineers and executive agencies in enhancing the seismic resilience of roadway bridges and bridge networks.

The main goal of the thesis is to find out, if the macroenvironment enables entrance for company producing condoms to Kenya´s market. Besides that the barriers which restrict the entrance to market are mentioned. The thesis mentions an influence of the barriers. The thesis uses PESTEL analysis for the indetification of the key factors which determine characteristic of the market. Using the PESTEL analysis enables to determine barriers of the entrance to Kenya´s market. On the output of PESTEL analysis is used DEMATEL method which was used for quantification of the PESTEL analysis output. Using DEMATEL method enabled to determinate influence of the particular factors of PESTEL. Because of using DEMATEL method thesis determinates political, economical and social factors as the strogest factors and it is necessary to devote them main attention. They may mean the most important barrier for entrance. Simultaneously DEMATEL determines political, social and legal factors as the factors with the biggest influence. Outcomes of this thesis provide information about macroenvironment of Kenya´s market for any company producing condoms.

The issue of sustainability, which is an increasingly important consideration in the day-to-day operations of businesses, needs to be addressed in the context of supplier selection. The use of multi-criteria approaches in decisions concerning the selection of sustainable suppliers can be a valuable approach for helping to resolve the complexity of this process. A systematic review of the literature highlighted gaps in the research in this area, such as the lack of a detailed description of multi-criteria methods, as well as a scarcity of sustainability criteria that take into account the three main perspectives (Economic, Environmental, and Social). This work describes the development and real case application of a DEMATEL (Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) and ANP (Analytic Network Process) fuzzy modeling technique for the selection of sustainable suppliers. The methodological approach used in the research was quantitative, descriptive, and empirical. The modeling and simulations were performed using MATLAB®. Incorporation of the specificities of the process of selection of sustainable suppliers makes the model a useful tool for use by both businesses and researchers concerned with the issue of sustainability. A systematic review of the published research highlights the main state-of-art methods and criteria used for the selection of green and sustainable suppliers. The model is described in a framework highlighting each step of the application. It was subsequently applied by a major glass packaging company, where the supply chain coordinator agreed to assist in the research. The outputs of the second phase of the model showed that the Economic cluster was most important and interacted with the Environmental cluster, while the Social cluster remained practically inert, without interactions with the other clusters. For the three perspectives, the three most influential criteria were as follows: cost, compliance, and quality (Economic perspective); environmental certifications/ISO 14001, reuse/recovery, and pollution control (Environmental perspective); and stakeholder rights, respect for policies, and encouragement of the development of self-sustainable recycling programs (Social perspective). Finally, a supplier was selected using the framework presented, and the criteria that most influenced the decision were highlighted. The procedure developed here offers a tool to assist businesses searching for sustainable solutions, as well as researchers in the scientific community concerned with the development of knowledge in this area.

Abstract:
Increasing population and urbanization motivates the capability of consuming more fashion goods than ever. This push creates more momentum on global companies to focus on clothing sectors. Recent advancements, including globalization and e-commerce, have made this sector as one of the top businesses worldwide. Top clothing brands made several strategies to satisfy the stakeholders to sustain in this hot, profitable business. This results in practicing more sustainable strategies, including corporate social responsibility in their clothing business throughout their operations, including the supply chain. However, most of the developed nations are consumers of textiles, which are produced and processed by any of the developing and under developing nations. Meanwhile, achieving sustainability in clothing business includes promoting sustainability in the whole chain of suppliers. Pressure from developed nations urges developing nations to promote sustainable practices in their operations. Several studies discussed the CSR related strategies in textile sectors but failed to explore their critical success factors based on their region. With this concern, this study attempts to study the critical success factors of CSR in textile industries situated in one of the developing nations, China. This study collected the critical success factors from literature and validated with the field experts; then the same were evaluated with the assistance of Chinese textile case industrial managers. Decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory tool has been used to evaluate the influential critical success factors of CSR to promote CSR through motivating those most influential success factors. These results could help the Chinese textile industrial managers to further extend strong roots on CSR implementation. Finally, this study sheds some light on future opportunities that exist within Chinese contexts with the implementation of CSR.

The convenience of traffic will be the key factor for the development of economic and international trade. Taiwan is surrounding by sea. Shipping policy is crucial to the development of national containership. Due to increased operating costs, the country containership team development is limited during recent years. The problem of flagging out has become a test of our containership team development facing seriously. The main reasons of flagging out will be the shipowners try to reduce operating costs in response to operation of the regional problems, or an attempt to reduce government control. The main motivation for this study is to explore the ship set membership system. By gathering ship domiciled system, to view the current status of the absence of the country containership industry development and explore the factors of flagging-out. We try to develop a specific response strategies for the relevant government units ship domiciled system specification develop the shipping development policy reference. DEMATEL (Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) has been applied in many situations, such as marketing strategies, control systems, safety problems, developing the competencies of global managers and group decision making. It has been incorporated into other methods such as ANP (Analytical Network Process), MCDM (Multiple Criteria Decision Making), fuzzy set theory, etc., to vitalize these traditional methods and explore new applications for the hybrid methods. DEMATEL models the influences of components of a system with an initial direct relation matrix. Influences of components can ripple transitively to other components, which is modeled by raising the initial direct relation matrix to powers. The total influence is computed by summing up matrices of all powers based on the assumption that the matrix raising to the power of infinity would converge to zero. The current paper shows that raising the initial relation matrix to the power of infinity may not converge to zero and hence total influence may not converge. The current paper also shows that our revised DEMATEL guarantees that the initial direct-relation matrix to infinite power will converge to zero and the total influence can be obtained accordingly. The newly developed approach is illustrated with numerical examples.

Abstract:
The substantial growth in population, increasing urbanization, overload in the consumption of infrastructures and energy, environmental impacts, and investments made in technological development constitute major challenges in what concerns the management and development of cities that aim to improve the citizens’ well-being and quality of life. The concern to find a balance between these factors makes the decision-making process more difficult and, therefore, it is essential to analyze the determinants of smart cities (i.e., cities that intend to be socially involved and habitable, economically and environmentally sustainable, with technology and innovation playing a fundamental role in this regard). Considering the principles of the Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) approach, the present study aims to combine cognitive mapping techniques and the DEcision MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method, in order to develop a multicriteria model that helps managers in the decision-making process, as well as in the analysis of determinants of smart cities. The research carried out allowed for the identification of these determinants and respective cause-effect relationships, using a panel of experts with experience and knowledge on the subject under analysis. The results were validated by both the panel of experts and by the councillor responsible for mobility and municipal assignments of the Évora City Council, who certified that the developed evaluation system is a tool that supports the decision-making process in what concerns smart cities. The main advantages and limitations of the present study are also subject of analysis and discussion.

Few studies have discussed the factors affecting hotel appraisal or proposed strate-gies to help improve hotel evaluation efficiency. The purpose of this study is to address this problem, using Modified Delphi Method to develop the initial questionnaire and DEMATEL (decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory) to construct multi-criteria hotel appraisal system and finally present network relationship map (NRM) between the factors. According to opinions of the expert-appraisers, there are 4 dimensions and 12 criteria are included as the dominated factors for hotel appraisal. The NRM further illu-strates the influential relationships which determine the priority order in the hotel ap-praisal process. The dimension of “Income Capitalization Approach (discount cash flow approach)” emerges as the first priority to be considered and followed by “Cost Ap-proach”, “Appraisal premise” and “Market survey & analysis”. The same rule can be applied to the criteria in each dimension. For instance, in “Income Capitalization Ap-proach (discount cash flow approach)”, the influential order is “Total income”, “Total cost” and “Discount cash rate”, implying the appraisal consideration priority. In “Cost approach”, the priority pattern is “Maintenance”, “Building cost” and “Land cost”; in “Appraisal premise”, the order is “Client data”, “Appraisal purpose” and “Appraisal conditions”; and in “Market survey & analysis’’ the order is “Property condition”, “Supply & demand analysis” and “Neighborhood & location”. In general, this research successfully demonstrated the advantages of the novel combination of Modified Delphi Method and DEMATEL and present useful strategies for effective hotel evaluation patterns. The result thus can be useful reference for both the academic and practical fields, and especially valuable for those professionals, such as real estate appraisers, hotel developers and investors.

Business markets are going to be globalization by new marketing and distribution channels in order to satisfy customer demand. Nowadays Supply Chain has become a key strategy in global competitive era. To determine what key factors or indexes plays an important procession for affecting operation and management in the enterprise, comparing with references, this study aims to create the evaluate system of business logistics activities. Therefore, this paper combined one of the multicriteria decision making method (MCDM) known as DEMATEL and importance-improvable analysis which is revised from importance-performance analysis. By applying this method, the independence relation of each factor in four different industries was discoverd. The result shows the complex independence in each logistics activities, especially the criteria “information and communication cost” and “delivery on time” have been an important factors. In all four different industries, these two criteria are selected in high rank. According to futher analysis, this study suggests that each industries has diverse priority and key factor, this also means companies could follow the priority of criteria to improve or enhance their business logistics operation efficiency in keen competitive markets.

The subjects and practices on SCM have flourished since 1990s. Enterprises have realized that a large amount of direct and indirect profits can be obtained from effective and efficient supply chain management practices. The supplier selection has a great impact on integration degree of supply chain relationship. In this study, the fuzzy DEMATEL (Decision making trial and evaluation laboratory) method was used to find out the factors which influence other factors the most in supplier selection. The fuzzy DEMATEL questionnaire was designed and sent to 17 professional purchasing personnel in electronic industry. Seventeen of the questionnaires responded were effective and analyzed. From the results of this study, it was found that technology ability was criteria with much influence. In addition, stable delivery of the goods was the evaluation criteria with the strongest connection with other criteria.

Abstract:
Strategic management is fundamental for organizational development. It plays a critical role in the accomplishment of business performance and, as result, in the achievement of competitive advantage. Currently, the increased use of strategic management has intentional impacts on a company’s performance and differentiation, specifically in a globalized market. From this perspective, organizational evaluation is important, as well as the development of strategic management frameworks that can guarantee the achievement of sustainable competitive advantages for organizations. One of the most well-known frameworks for organizational resource assessment is the Value, Rarity, Inimitability and Organizational-oriented (VRIO) framework. It is worth noting, however, that this tool is not without limitations (e.g., how to identify and weight resources and capabilities in the evaluation process), which have prevented progress. Hence, this dissertation aims to enhance the VRIO framework, allowing for its quantification in a transparent and robust manner. To reach this aim, the VRIO framework is combined with the DEcision-MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method, and a reallife application is carried out. The incentives and shortcomings of this structured evaluation model are also analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:
DEMATEL technique is almost 50 years old. A long history of its application to solve diverse problems from different fields has provided diverse improvements to the technique to make it even more powerful. It nevertheless seems that some original merits of the technique were accidentally lost, as well. The merits proved to be very useful for a complex and comprehensive research made by DEMATEL inventors. So, it seems that they could also prove useful for contemporary researchers. This why an effort is made in the paper to recall and describe these merits and assess their usefulness for supporting a comprehensive decision analysis today.
