Full textText recall and comprehension is one of the richest procedures used to assess memory processing. A set of two different versions of a same narrative was therefore designed and administered to three groups: young adults, healthy older adults, and patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The results show evidence that with aging there is a drop in the abilities and processing resources of working memory. The ability to recall texts declines with age from young adults to adults younger than 72, to adults older than 71. The analysis of the differential recall of the macro-structure and of the details supports this decrease. AD patients always get very low retrieval rates and the differences are quantitative in nature. The sub-systems of working memory seem to be impaired to a greater extent than those of healthy older adults, but it has always been found that the components of the semantic memory were preserved, more specifically the ones concerning the typical narrative structures. In addition, the qualitative analysis of internal and external responses to texts allows us to exhibit precise clinical features of the disease, features either of a mnesic functioning related to the production of inferences in responses, or a dysfunction related to the construction of interferences. The selection of specific and rigorous criteria bound to the internal structure of the so designed texts validated the assessing tool. This test should therefore be used to describe and assess not only the mnemonic functioning of healthy adults, but also to screen - as soon as the first disorder appears - subjects most likely to develop a degenerative disease, such as Alzheimer's, which specifically impairs the mnesic system

Full textThe first goal of the present study consisted in a survey of metacognition and cognitive performance (assessed with the BVRT, the WPAT, Isaacs set test and the serial sevens) in a sample of 2 726 non-institutionalized subjects aged 65 and older living in Gironde (south-western France). The second goal of the present study was to determine whether a discordance between metamemory and memory performance at the time of initial testing was predictive, upon the first year followup, of a cognitive deterioration and of a senile dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. Significant relationship was observed between the presence of seld-reported cognitive problems and lower performance on the psychometric test. However, beyond this relationship was a significant discordance between the two evaluations. The discordance could be explained in part by the fact that the correlates of cognitive functioning were not related with a similar strength to self-reports and to actual performance. In general, females and subjects who scored above the depressive symptomatology threshold reported more problems while lower performances were related to older age and low educational level. The discordance between metamemory and actual performance was related to cognitive deterioration upon follow-up but not with a dementia as assessed with the DSM-iii r criteria
