Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University<br>Background: Dementia is a chronic, irreversible condition that currently affects millions of Americans. With increasing life expectancies and an aging population, it is predicted that this number will triple within the next fifty years, possibly affecting 16 million Americans by 2050. The majority of care for these patients is provided by informal caregivers, usually their spouses or children. However, studies have shown that most informal caregivers feel they need more information about the disorder and the services available to help them, as well as on how

This study has been motivated by the need to better understand gender relations in dementia care. Across time and place, gender has been shown to be a fundamental relationship of social organisation. It is argued there is a need to consider the person with dementia as a gendered (and sexual) individual. In this quasi-experimental research design, the sample consisted of 19 participants in 3 groups, selected using these criteria: must be receiving services from a long term care facility, be diagnosed with dementia, display agitated behaviors, and be age 65 and older. Abstract:
This project used data from the Dementia Progression Study, a longitudinal, population-based study based out of Cache County, Utah. Statistical models were used to examine the association between caregiver factors, the care environment, and cognitive outcomes in persons with dementia. Mediational analyses were also used to examine if the care environment, inferred for nutritional status, engagement in physical and cognitively stimulating activities, mediated the relationship between the closeness/caregiver coping strategies and cognition in persons with dementia. Results showed that closer car

Introduction Early detection and management, as outlined in dementia guidelines, can improve outcomes and potentially reduce the number of transitions experienced between care-facilities. The objectives of this thesis were to : conduct a critical assessment of the literature on actual versus guideline-consistent dementia care; use population-level data to examine variations in receipt of guideline-consistent dementia care; understand longitudinal patterns of transitions and the factors that contribute to transitions; and assess if receipt of guideline-consistent dementia care and/or high quali

Agitated behaviours in dementia elderly predispose to negative outcomes. Music intervention is an evidence-based intervention that could help to ease the situation. The integrative and systematic review studies provide evidence that music intervention is effective in reducing agitated behaviours in dementia elderly. The assessment of the implementation potential, the feasibility and transferability demonstrate the music intervention can be implemented in local setting. An evidence-based guideline based on the reviewed papers is developed to use in local HK hospitals or nursing homes. With the

Background Dementia is a condition that is estimated to have affected over 50 million individuals globally in 2019. China has the most significant number of people with dementia worldwide, with the prevalence of dementia for people aged 65 and over at 5.6% in 2019. Although the Chinese government has made efforts to establish a three-tier long-term care system (i.e., home care, community care, and institutional care), the undeveloped care system in China cannot meet the rapidly increasing needs of people with dementia. Currently, the health care system in China is composed of three tiers: tie

Abstract:
The use of antipsychotic medications in older adults with dementia increases risk of mortality; therefore, it is critical that nurses use nonpharmacological interventions in dementia care. The nurses' role is integral to implementation of treatment strategies to dementia patients and efforts to improve care in patients with dementia using a nonpharmacological approach are necessary. Therefore, guidelines outlining nonpharmacologic dementia care management will enable nurses to provide a wider spectrum of care to dementia patients. The purpose of this project was to make recommendations for the
