Abstract:

Abstract:
Acacia cyclops A. Cunn. ex G. Don, A. karoo Hayne, Albizia amara (Roxb.) B. Boivin, Callitris preisii Miq., Casuarina cunninghamiana Miq., Persea indica (L.) Spreng., Retama sphaerocarpa Raf., Schinus weinmannifolius Engl. i Vitex negundo var. heterophylla (Franch.) Rehder.

Abstract:
The Department of Botany and Dendrology of the oldest educational forestry institution of Russia, the present St. Petersburg State Forest Technical University named after S.M. Kirov, is celebrating its centenary. At the time of its foundation it was the first specialized department of this kind both in Russia and in the world. In the course of its historical development, the Department of Botany and Dendrology has been formed not only as a large educational and methodological center for botanical, dendrological and general biology training. It has also become a major scientific center providing a wide range of research in the field of biology and ecology of woody plants, their introduction, intraspecific polymorphism, selection, phenological biorhythm, forest science, floristics and taxonomy, anthropogenic dynamics of plant cover and biodiversity conservation of forest ecosystems, bioindication, bioclimatology, forest phenology, and dendrophenological forecasting. It is impossible to list scientific publications of the Department, for only V.N.Sukachov alone was the author of about 500 papers. Under the leadership of V.N.Sukachev, his students and followers, provided research training and supervision for about 50 doctors and candidates of sciences, most of whom specialized in dendrology. Already in itself this fact testifies that creating the first in Russia Department of dendrology, V.N.Sukachev looked far ahead into addressing botanical and dendrological problems of Russia. Only within the last 10-15 years, the staff of the Department published 10 monographs, 2 textbooks, more than 10 teaching manuals. The geography of scientific research is constantly expanding. The scientific school “Dendrology and Biogeocenology named after V.N.Sukachev” has been established and is functioning at the Department.

Abstract:
Phenological performance of Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don (jacaranda) and Ligustrum lucidum W.T.Aiton (privet) species in urban trees ABSTRACT: This study constitutes of a review on phenological aspects of two exotic species widely used in urban environments. Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don. (jacaranda) is a deciduous species that tends to lose its leaves in winter, with sprouting between October and November. Flowering, the best ornamental attraction of this species, occurs between September and March, while fruiting can be seen along the year. In contrast, Ligustrum lucidum W.T.Aiton (privet) is a perennial species. The flower bud’s emergence and anthesis of this species occur whether along the year or during shorter periods. Anthesis is higher between November and January, which is the time of the year when population’s health can be affected by the potentially allergenic pollen. Privet has abundant fruiting from May to August, which is a phenological behavior that facilitates zoochoric dispersion, and may contributes to the invasion’s potential, typical for this species in natural environments. Privet can be conditioned by variables such as photoperiod, temperature and precipitation, in at least, one of its phenological phases. New researches on the phenological behavior of jacaranda and privet species are important to clarify the progression on phenological phases, to investigate the possible interactions with environmental variables and growing conditions in urban trees. Keywords: dendrology; urban forestry; landscape; phenophases; environmental variables.

Abstract:
The characteristics of Cedrela angustifolia, i.e., its dendrology, ecology, silviculture and wood anatomy were described. This Meliaceae species naturally occurring in Latin America produces annual growth rings with sensibility to climatic variables, such as rainfall and temperature, showing potentiality to climatic reconstruction. The X-ray densitometry of the wood constitutes, besides the usual wood anatomy analysis, a suitable method to delimit the annual growth rings, as well as, to determine the wood density variation from pith to bark and within the growth rings.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Japanese sato-zakura, literally “village cherries”, represent perhaps the most popular subject of dendrology and ornamental horticulture. The authors rose to the occasion to write an extraordinary account of Japanese cherries and shed more light on a still confused group of these aristocratic flowering trees. Kuitert teaches at the Kyoto University of Art and Design while Peterse is a dedicated plant breeder and researcher of the Japanese flowering cherries. Rarely do professors have the time, or take the time, needed to solely write such a thoroughly prepared text. Both Dutchmen paid attention to detail, and the result is a well-written, high-quality product.

Abstract:
The bioecological characteristics of the genus Juniperus L. on the Absheron Peninsula and its resistance to environmental factors are considered. The juniper, which occupies a very important place in the forests of Azerbaijan, is less demanding on environmental factors. At the Institute of Dendrology of Azerbaijan NAS, research on seed reproduction was carried out. Despite the fact that seed propagation is the only way to create new hybrid forms, the structure of the seeds and the growth characteristics of conifers make it difficult to use this propagation method. In the presented work, the influence of various factors on seed reproduction is considered and a model for the complex application of stratification and scarification for seed germination is proposed.

Abstract:
Abstract Results of artificial fertilization of P. uliginosa with P. sylvestris and P. mugo are presented and discussed. P. sylvestris and P. mugo are thought to be the parental species of P. uliginosa. Two grafts of one P. uliginosa clone from Arboretum of the Institute of Dendrology in Kórnik, Poland were used as mother individuals. One individual of P. sylvestris and one individual of P. mugo were the pollen donors. Three mature cones were obtained as the result of artificial pollination of P. uliginosa with P. mugo pollen. Out of 107 seeds, 68 were filled what gives 63%. P. uliginosa conelets pollinated with P. sylvestris pollen were all aborted. Based on obtained data, close phylogenetic relationship between P. uliginosa and P. mugo complex is suggested.

Abstract:
Changing climate conditions and increasing demands for timber and wood products create a need to cultivate highly productive forest stands. High productivity, good wood quality and adaption to climate change make European larch a promising species for Lithuania. The aim of this research was to evaluate the productivity and sustainability of the larch stands. We tested the hypothesis that larch stands mixed with other species are more productive than the pure larch stands. In total, our study sampled 138 larch stands, mixed stands (91) and pure stands (47) that aged between 30 and 60 years old in Lithuania. We evaluated these stands using dendrologic, dendrometric and phytocoenological characteristics and determined the main factors affecting productivity and stability of larch stands. Our study showed that pure larch stands have higher mean annual increment and are more productive than mixed larch stands. However, we found that timber volumes decreased in both pure and mixed larch stands over 50 years of age. This happens due to the absence of forestry treatments, such as thinnings in the larch stands, thus resulting in natural tree dieback. The development of thinning guidelines could make larch stands a valuable and productive source of timber.

Abstract:
Three different statistical algorithms are applied to forecast locally extreme precipitation across the contiguous United States (CONUS) as quantified by 1- and 10-yr average recurrence interval (ARI) exceedances for 1200–1200 UTC forecasts spanning forecast hours 36–60 and 60–84, denoted, respectively, day 2 and day 3. Predictors come from nearly 11 years of reforecasts from NOAA’s Second-Generation Global Ensemble Forecast System Reforecast (GEFS/R) model and derive from a variety of thermodynamic and kinematic variables that characterize the meteorological regime in addition to the quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) output from the ensemble. In addition to encompassing nine different atmospheric fields, predictors also vary in space and time relative to the forecast point. Distinct models are trained for eight different hydrometeorologically cohesive regions of the CONUS. One algorithm supplies the GEFS/R predictors directly to a random forest (RF) procedure to produce extreme precipitation forecasts; the second also employs RFs, but the predictors instead undergo principal component analysis (PCA), and extracted leading components are supplied to the RF. In the last algorithm, dimension-reduced predictors are supplied to a logistic regression (LR) algorithm instead of an RF. A companion paper investigated the quality of the forecasts produced by these models and other RF-based forecast models. This study is an extension of that work and explores the internals of these trained models and what physical and statistical insights they reveal about forecasting extreme precipitation from a global, convection-parameterized model.

The results of the study confirmed the significant advantage of experimental indicators over the control. Thus, the treatment of seeds and two-year-old seedlings of Scots pine with a low-frequency electromagnetic field using the POSEP technology, in general had a positive effect not only on their survival rate and biometric parameters, but also on their anatomical structure. Based on the results of the studies, it can be ststed that the POSEP technology is an effective method of physical impact on the survival rate and growth increase of Scots pine seedlings.

Abstract:
AbstractA new site with Lateglacial palaeosols covered by 0.8 - 2.4 m thick aeolian sands is presented. The buried soils were subjected to multidisciplinary analyses (pedology, micromorphology, geochronology, dendrology, palynology, macrofossils). The buried soil cover comprises a catena from relatively dry (’Nano’-Podzol, Arenosol) via moist (Histic Gleysol, Gleysol) to wet conditions (Histosol). Dry soils are similar to the so-called Usselo soil, as described from sites in NW Europe and central Poland. The buried soil surface covers ca. 3.4 km2. Pollen analyses date this surface into the late Allerød. Due to a possible contamination by younger carbon, radiocarbon dates are too young. OSL dates indicate that the covering by aeolian sands most probably occurred during the Younger Dryas. Botanical analyses enables the reconstruction of a vegetation pattern typical for the late Allerød. Large wooden remains of pine and birch were recorded.
