Abstract:
An annotated catalogue of the tribe Senodoniini (Coleoptera: Elateridae: Dendrometrinae) is presented. Altogether, 21 extant species are classified in genera Senodonia Laporte, 1838 (20 species) and Sossor Candèze, 1883 (one species). Genus Parallotrius Candèze, 1878 is placed into Dendrometrinae incertae sedis, and Allotriopsis Champion, 1896 is tentatively transferred to Elaterinae: Dicrepidiini. Senodonia bicoloris Vats & Chauhan, 1993 is transferred to Arhaphes Candèze, 1860 (Elateridae: Negastriinae) as A. bicoloris (Vats & Chauhan, 1993) comb. nov. Senodoniini are distributed in the Himalayas, China and South East Asia. For each taxon we provide synonyms, information on types, type localities, distribution, and bibliography. Additionally, a list of genera earlier classified in Senodoniini but currently placed outside the group is given.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Click-beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) are an abundant, diverse, and economically important beetle family that includes bioluminescent species. To date, molecular phylogenies have sampled relatively few taxa and genes, incompletely resolving subfamily level relationships. We present a novel probe set for anchored hybrid enrichment of 2260 single-copy orthologous genes in Elateroidea. Using these probes, we undertook the largest phylogenomic study of Elateroidea to date (99 Elateroidea, including 86 Elateridae, plus 5 non-elateroid outgroups). We sequenced specimens from 88 taxa to test the monophyly of families, subfamilies and tribes. Maximum likelihood and coalescent phylogenetic analyses produced well-resolved topologies. Notably, the included non-elaterid bioluminescent families (Lampyridae + Phengodidae + Rhagophthalmidae) form a clade within the otherwise monophyletic Elateridae, and Sinopyrophoridae may not warrant recognition as a family. All analyses recovered the elaterid subfamilies Elaterinae, Agrypninae, Cardiophorinae, Negastriinae, Pityobiinae, and Tetralobinae as monophyletic. Our results were conflicting on whether the hypnoidines are sister to Dendrometrinae or Cardiophorinae + Negastriinae. Moreover, we show that fossils with the eucnemid-type frons and elongate cylindrical shape may belong to Eucnemidae, Elateridae: Thylacosterninae, ancestral hard-bodied cantharoids or related extinct groups. Proposed taxonomic changes include recognition of Plastocerini as a tribe in Dendrometrinae and Hypnoidinae stat. nov. as a subfamily within Elateridae.

The study has shown that the phytosociological association criteria contributed significantly to the prediction of dominant height (the dendrometrical variable used as an indice of site quality) in relation to age at breast height (1.3 m). The three studied associations, the red maple-sugar maple association (humid mesotrophic sites), the red maple-black ash association (mesic sites) and the red maple-wild holly association (oligotroph humid sites) differ significantly as to their height growth pattern. On the basis of these associations, three empiric production tables where produced. The yield at 50 years (breast height age) in the three sites qualities amount respectively to 179, 148 and 108 m3 per hectare. Key words: Acer rubrum. Abstract:
The genus Penia Laporte, 1838 (tribe Dimini Candèze, 1863, subfamily Dendrometrinae Gistel, 1848) has three known endemic species from Taiwan. However, little is still known about these species and their important features, including genitalia. Here, the taxonomy of Taiwanese Penia is revised and eight species are confirmed: Penia alishanensis sp. nov., P. babai Kishii, 1994, P. elongata sp. nov., P. inopinata sp. nov., P. pulla sp. nov., P. smetanai Schimmel, 1996, P. takasago Kishii, 1997, and P. tsou sp. nov. The paratype of P. takasago is a different species and the species is described as P. inopinata. Three species have elongated bodies (P. alishanensis, P. elongata, and P. smetanai), whereas the other five have broad bodies. The eight species are distinguished from each other by the sizes of the eyes and apical maxillary palpomeres, the lengths of antennae and elytra, the relative length of the basal antennomeres, the degree of development of the mesosternal process between mesocoxae, and the shapes of the pronotum, hypomeron, scutellar shield and abdominal ventrite V. A key to all species in Taiwan is provided.

Abstract:
Active in the accumulation of facts concerning the environment, the canton of Vaud has available a forestry data bank which offers abundant information. The most important elements, such as geology, climate and vegetation (the phytosociological and dendrometrical bases), are described in this article. This data bank is available to the entire forestry service. The information comes from four biogeographical regions and the description of these makes it possible to impart a regional structure to the environmental references from forest management and development planning and thus facilitates deliberation and communication.

Abstract:
Summary One of the most important characteristics in determining the dendrometrical properties of a stand is the annual height increment of the trees. On the basis of these increments, natural phases of the trees’ life are defined. In the present study the data concern the height increments of the main trunk of 25-year-old Scots pine, as well as simulated data. Our research deals with the application of longitudinal data analysis. This analysis is usually used when measurements are taken at the same treatments at different time points. The calculations performed provide answers to the question of which annual height increments differ.

Abstract:
With a synchronic analysis we studied the main stand parameters of 17 black locust coppices aged between 1–41 years. The homogeneous site conditions of the stands made it possible to study the structure of their dynamics in the context of a time period twice or three times longer than the traditional rotation period. Main dendrometrical and structural parameters of the studied stands are described. In undisturbed conditions, 5–7 years after the coppicing, natural regeneration of other broadleaved species starts to occur in the stands and eventually reaches the robinia crown belt, which begins to reduce its cover.

Abstract:
Plastocerus angulosus (Germar, 1844) is one of the only two species of genus Plastocerus Schaum, 1852 within the monogeneric click beetle tribe Plastocerini. It is distributed in the area comprising Greece, Turkey, Syria, Israel, and Lebanon (first record for Lebanon published here). Due to the slightly modified morphology of P. angulosus, this taxon has a convoluted taxonomic history and was earlier classified in various families and even superfamilies. However, recent phylogenies place it in Elateridae: Dendrometrinae. In this study, we review the morphology, intraspecific morphological and genetic variability, sexual dimorphism, systematics, bibliography, and distribution of P. angulosus. Our results show rather low morphological and relatively high genetic variability in this species. Females, which are larger than males and differ mainly in the antennae and abdominal ventrites, are not so rare as previously thought. Further field research should focus on the discovery of immature stages to describe their morphology and understand their biology and ecology.
