Abstract In thé Northwest Territories, there are daily demands for interpreting and translating in all the Dene languages. The people who perform this role rarely have the opportunity to specialize in any specific field, so they must try to develop an understanding of as many subjects as they can. This paper highlights some of the inter-lingual difficulties faced by the interpreters, along with a brief explanation of the methods used to develop new terminology in the Dene languages. It is demonstrated that the methods used in Dene language terminology development are the same as those used in

A consequent question is how to explain the existence in certain languages of two copular verbs that give rise to different interpretations. Such is the case in numerous languages of the Dene family (formerly known as Athapaskan). We explain this situation with the hypothesis that the copulas realize an underlying three-copula system differing in argument structure. Simultaneous interpreting was, until recently, only delivered in Inuktitut. With increasing demand, and improvements to training programs, it is now provided in the Dene languages as well. Relay interpreting, a unique feature to the NWT interpreting services, plays an important role due to the multiple languages dealt with on a regular basis.
