Human infections of dengue viruses are mediated by mosquito bites. The disease spectrum ranges from asymptomatic infection to severe dengue haemorrhagic fever, and dengue shock syndrome. Dengue virus infects a wide range of immune cells that lead to plasma leakage and dengue haemorrhagic fever. Dengue haemorrhagic fever can be complicated with renal involvement, including haematuria, proteinuria, glomerulonephritis, acute kidney injury, and haemolytic uraemic syndrome. Diagnosis can be made by serology, detection of viral proteins by Western blot assay, or detection of the dengue viral genome

Viruses: A Very Short Introduction outlines the origins, structure, and method of infection of a vast variety of viruses and demonstrates how clever these entities appear to be. It explains the vital role viruses play in the ocean’s delicate ecosystem and discusses the impact of global warming, which is increasing the range of vector-transmitted viruses such as dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile virus. The recent Ebola and Zika epidemics, as well as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, are also discussed. Can we ever live in harmony with viruses? This VSI considers the ways in which we may need

Hepatitis means ‘inflammation of the liver’ and is manifest with symptoms that include malaise, anorexia, fever, flu-like symptoms, and pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, with the pain being caused by swelling of the liver and its capsule. Elevations in circulating hepatic enzymes, particularly aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase, are common, with jaundice occurring some time after the onset of other symptoms and signs. There are five viruses that primarily cause viral hepatitis: hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viruses, abbreviated HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, and HEV, respectivel

Population Biology of Vector-Borne Diseases is the first comprehensive survey of this rapidly developing field. The chapter topics provide an up-to-date presentation of classical concepts, reviews of emerging trends, synthesis of existing knowledge, and a prospective agenda for future research. The contributions offer authoritative and international perspectives from leading thinkers in the field. The dynamics of vector-borne diseases are far more intrinsically ecological compared with their directly transmitted equivalents. The environmental dependence of ectotherm vectors means that vector-b

There are few groups of viral zoonoses that have attracted such widespread publicity as the arenaviruses, particularly during the 1960’s and 1970’s when Lassa emerged as a major cause of haemorrhagic disease in West Africa. More than any other zoonoses, members of the family are used extensively for the study of virus-host relationships. Thus the study of this unique group of enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses has been pursued for two quite separate reasons. First, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCM) has been used as a model of persistent virus infections for over half a century; its
