Abstract:
The assignment for this project was to design a culture school for kids. The site for this project is located in Älvsjö at the bottom corner of Stockholms Mässan. It is here where I was inspired to create a school that danced its way around the exisiting trees, allowing for the characterstics of the tree to reflect its way into the different stories of the building. "No trees were harmed in the making of this structure". It is a dance between the organization of a 2.7x6x5 meter modular system that learns to live in harmony with all of the existing nature. It is a study in how urbanization can land naturally whilst taking nature into consideration. If we keep chopping down trees eventuelly there won´t be any left, lets learn to adapt our architecture to nature instead of let architecture forcing its way into it.

Abstract:
This study aims at introducing a story of the Music Academy ballet students in the 19th century (1783-1913). The ballet students’ identities and their positions as apprentices come to light through the different steps of the institutional setting-up of that Academy. This thesis goes beyond administrative history and unveils the genuine socioeconomic conditions of children at work. For many reasons going from economic issues concerning their training to ballet cultural practises, the Music Academy students are at the heart of urban and theatrical life of XIXth century Paris. Eventually, an analysis of the ballet dancers ‘ freedom of movement and of the different teaching methods in Europe allows to pinpoint the mechanisms of a cultural domination speech, built by the music Academy and claimed to come from it too, throughout the Western world

Abstract The aim of this research is to develop a standardised Dancing Interest Scale (DIS) for evaluating students’ dancing interest. The item development based on a series of deep semi-structured interviews for exploring pupils’ perception of dancing interest. Therefore, the content analysis has been employed to build up the prototype items, and based on item analysis, the standardised discriminative items have been established. Hence, based on the content analysis from the two advanced dancing teachers (average teaching experiences are around 7 years), 36-item prototype DIS has been established. Furthermore, the survey sample will be involved in 319 pupils in four primary schools with dancing courses in Taiwan. Furthermore, based on item analysis, there were two items with low discrimination power has been deleted, and using Principal Component Analysis with direct oblimin rotation, the major four dimensions are: (1) Dancing appreciation, (2) Dancing insistency, (3) Dancing cognition, and (4) Music sensitivity. These accounted respectively for the following percentages of the variance: 22.582, 5.838, 5.716 and 4.878. The internal reliability meets the acceptable requirement (Cronbach alpha = 0.753). It is proposed that the DIS can not only provide a standardised instrument for evaluating primary school dancing teachers’ teaching performance but also can be a tool for evaluating pupils’ dancing learning situation for improving the whole performance in ‘teaching’ and ‘learning’. Abstract:
This thesis combines theoretical discussion with extracts from transcribed focus groups and interviews to illuminate the impact on the identity of formerly heterosexual women who become lesbians in mid-life. I have conducted my research as participant observer who has this core experience in common with the other subjects. I have also included my poetry and journal extracts to track and comment on the project and the topic. The accounts from twenty-three focus group members and interviewees contribute in two ways to the gap in published literature about the coming out process. First, this is to my knowledge the only Australian study of this kind. Second, the women's stories differ from other collections of coming out narratives because they do not, as a rule, privilege the lesbian experience over the heterosexual one. Instead the study focuses on what changed for the women when they made this transition, and on what stayed the same. They discuss these changes and lack of change with regard to personal identity, relationships with other women, children and families, friends, the workplace and the wider culture. The study investigates how all these elements of the women's lives have been influenced by their own maturity and by the prevailing social attitudes toward homosexuality at the time they came out. It also discusses the women's various attitudes toward the lesbian community and the politics of labelling themselves according to their sexual orientation. The study is underpinned by theoretical perspectives on the formation of identity, on current thinking about sex and gender, and on an understanding of the evolving positions of lesbians and gays in the eyes of the church, the law, psychology and society in general. It pays particular attention to the relationship between lesbianism and feminism, and the impact of queer theory on lesbian identity. It also examines the changing nature of representations of lesbians in popular culture.

A Study on the Flow Experience of Improvisation in Dancing Classes of Primary School Abstract This research aims to analyse the relationship between the flow experience of improvisation in dancing class and individual character of fifth and sixth graders. A survey and interview are the forms for collecting the data of the research. “Experience Sampling Form” is the main research instrument, and the research is conducted by means of “Experience Sampling Method” (ESM). The effective sample number is 227 elementary students, and 1152 effective questionnaire is collected. The data is used to compare the relationship between improvisation and flow channel. In addition, 44 picked students were interviewed to discover the coherence between improvisation and description of the flow experience. The result of the survey is processed with “Factor Analysis”, “Chi-square Test”, “Independent Test”, “One-way ANOVA”, and “Scheffe’s Method” ; the interview results were analyzed and generalized qualitatively. The main research results are as following: 1. The quality of experience was varied becaused of different flow channel. The most positive feeling was shown when they were in flow channel; to the contrary is apathy channel. 2. Different experience related with improvisation achievement. The best scores were got by the students in boredom channel; the second was in flow channel, and the lowest was in anxiety channel. 3. According to the analysis, the interviewees, descriptions of the flow experience were parallel to the flow theory. For personal experience, most interviewees care about the responses of teachers and classmates. Flow status interviewees treat that as the innovation and motivation; anxiety ones feel frustrated easily because of lacking of self-confidence. 4. Teachers’ teaching philosophy affect students’ achievement. Positive feedback, pluralistic teaching styles, emphasis on individual differences and performance, ability of being resourceful, high emotional quotient, harmony class atmosphere are effective activities helping students in learning; to the contrary are disapproval words, not valuing differences among students, tension and lousy interaction. Since teachers are the important responsible for valuing students, they owe an obligation to creative strategies to inspire students, observe keenly, find some way of circumventing obstacles, and secure a warm and hearty support to help students gain positive flow experience.

Stroobant, Emma. "Dancing to the music of your heart: home schooling the school-resistant child. A constructivist account of school refusal." 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/2429.

Full text
Abstract:
School resistance is usually understood as a pathological behaviour or condition indicative of underlying mental disorder for which therapy is ‘indicated’ and home schooling is ‘contraindicated’. However, I argue that the psychiatric/psychological classifications commonly used to identify school resistance (i.e. ‘school phobia’ and ‘school refusal’) are socio-historical constructs that function to socially and discursively position school-resistant children as ‘abnormal’, ‘irrational’, ‘dysfunctional’ and ‘sick’ individuals whose problems are likely to be compounded by school withdrawal. Assuming that school resistance and home schooling can be constructed in multiple and competing ways, I explore the perspectives of seven school-resistant children who are being (or have been) home schooled, their mothers, and nine practitioners working with children. I argue that by applying a different set of assumptions to school resistance, the meaning of this phenomenon can be radically transformed and so too can the experiences of school resisters and their families. This research suggests that for some mothers and their school-resistant children, home schooling can provide an acceptable and effective solution to the problems raised by school resistance.

Abstract This study focused on the changing process of the interpersonal relationship of junior high school dancing class students during a creative dance course. The creative dance course that was investigated in the present research was a student-centered course that emphasized movement exploration and the unique, personal performance in the learning process. It encouraged students to convey their own thoughts via creative bodily expression. The teacher, who played the role of researcher, hoped that the students could enhance their collaborative capability by developing positive relationship with others through creative dance. This was a qualitative action research. The subjects were 13 first grade students of the dancing class in junior high school. The eight weekly eighty-minute courses were developed based on the teacher’s teaching experience and related literature. The results came from the analysis of the video records, reflective teaching journals, feedback sheets and class observation sheets etc. The conclusions of this study are as follows: 1. Taking Laban’s group-related movement themes and students’ capacity and living experiences as the curriculum structure, the creative dance course could help the dancing class students develop their interpersonal relationships. 2. The teacher’s positive encouragements and empathy could help the students build their confidence and improve their interactions within a group. 3. From this creative dance class, students established positive self-concept and established trust and cooperative relationships with their classmates. The development of the students’ interpersonal relationship evolved from the stages of contact, involvement to intimacy. 4. The reflective process of action research could urge the teacher to review her teaching strategies and improve her relationship with the students, setting a role model for students’ interpersonal relationship. Based on the researcher’s reflection on the localization education, the current study is an action research on a Performing Arts curriculum design under the concept of school-localization, adopting the tea culture as the learning principle. This study aims to investigate the origin and background of Ling Yun Junior High School’s school-localization curriculum and the application of a school-localization curriculum in designing learning activities in the Performing Arts classes. The purpose is to ensure whether the school-localization programs are practically implemented in the Performing Arts. The results of this study are listed as follows: First, as for the aspect of curriculum development and design, the development of school-localization curriculum at Ling Yun Junior High School was based on the teamwork of a curriculum development group and the incorporation of teaching resources. The implementation of a Performing Arts curriculum under the concept of school-localization achieved three pedagogical goals, including cognition, skills, and affection. The rationale of the curriculum design depended on three aspects: cultural understanding, action learning, and audience’s perceptions. Gender-differentiated tea-picking dance movements could help students experience the meanings of gender movements in the Hakka culture. In addition, the incorporation of both traditional and creative dance learning activities helped students get closer to traditional culture. As for the aspect of students’ learning, second, the course could develop students’ hometown identity, in which students could appreciate and have a strong desire to learn more about their hometown cultures. Through group discussion and performance, students could realize the importance of self and teamwork, and be aware of Hakka spirits. Finally, as for curriculum implementation and teaching profession, a mixed-gender grouping approach was adopted to help learners experience features of the Hakka artistic culture. The application of multimedia in teaching also enhanced the teacher’s professional development and improved students’ learning.

From the marketing angle, children are potential customers that cannot be neglected. Nowadays, educational dance institutes that are dedicated to cultivating and promoting dance education, entertainment and recreational sports among children are increasing. The increase is the resulting combination of the country’s steady growth of economic, parents’ high valuation on their children’s education, and the concept of exercising to health. Therefore, the author feels the need to study consuming behaviors of athletic dancers, and to provide dance businesses with practical marketing policies. The purpose of this study is firstly to understand parents’ motivations of choosing SportDance for their children, and secondly based on statistic variations of human populations, to explore what parents’ standards of evaluation and satisfaction are, when they are considering a dance institute’s backgrounds, systems, how much does it charge, the software/teaching, hardware/facility, and transportation conditions, the teaching and school environments, its teachers’ levels, and the institute’s curriculums. The author does the survey, using the self-edited questionnaire, A Study on Kaohsiung City’s Elementary School Students’ Consuming Behaviors of SportDance. By analyzing the surveyed data statistically from the returned questionnaires, the author concludes that, A.“Mother” has a 80.1% lead among all the people surveyed in terms of the relationship between the adults surveyed and the target pupils; most of people surveyed are between 36 and 45 of age, the percentage is 62.2; most of them have college or university degrees, the percentage is 51.8; many of the student dancers’ parents are teachers, or working in the army or in governments, the percentage is 28, which is the highest of all the occupations surveyed; most of the parents’ monthly incomes are between NT$40001 and 60000, the percentage is 33.5; most of the parents’ knowledge sources about SportDance institutes come from their relatives, friends, or neighbors, the percentage is 31.4. B.Based on the variations of human populations, “The pursuit of beauty” scores the highest percentage in terms of the parents’ motivations of letting their children be SportDance athletes, followed by the two other motivations, “The need for health,” and “The pursuit of knowledge.” C.Also based on the variations, consumers consider that “Teacher’s level & dance-related facilities” are the most influential concerns on the scale of standards of evaluation, while “Teacher’s expertise” is the most satisfactory factor. D.There are apparent differences between parents’ standards of evaluation and satisfaction, based on the same variations.

How the Imagery Instructional Teaching Ttrategy Affects the Dancing Learning Process of Taiwanese Junior High School Students Abstract The purpose of this empirical study is to investigate how the imagery instructional teaching strategy affects the result of dancing learning process of Taiwanese junior high school students. This empirical research was based on 50 first year junior high school students in Taiwan. They were divided into two groups which were an empirical group and a contrast group, and there were 25 students in each of the groups. The empirical group consisted of 14 male students and 11 female students. In the contrast group, there were 13 male students and 12 female students. The empirical group students were taught by the imagery instructional teaching strategy, and the contrast group maintained the same instruction as they normally received. This empirical teaching and study lasted for 7 weeks. The result of this study was analysis by the ANCOVA method and qualitative research. There were several results found by this study as follows: 1. According to the analysis of the ANCOVA method, it is indicated that the more frequent practicing of imagery instructional learning actually helps learners to practice and learn dancing movements, and the learners achieve significant improvement by this method of instructional learning. 2. The empirical group who received the imagery instructional learning got comparably better results then the contrast group students who maintained the same instruction as usual. 3. In the performance of movement category, the third category which is movement of lower limbs and knees got the highest score and the sixth category which relates to stomach muscles got the lowest score. 4. Different frequencies of the imagery instructional practice led to different results. 5. The learner dancer who is able to link imagery and motion effectively gained the better learning result. Furthermore, the finding of this empirical research suggests two points as a reference for further practical teaching. Firstly, the suggestion for further research is that there should be a focus on the investigation between the creativity of the imagery instructional teaching and learners’ practice, which would be useful for further researchers. Secondly, the suggestion for practical teaching is adding the sense of motion by imagery instruction to physical movement for dancers’ practicing and learning. It can be taught by the use of pictures or signs to indicate the movement to the dancers, and reinforces a better dancing performance for the learner by linking between message receiving and expression.

The purpose of this research is to discuss the body image of high school dancing talented class students, taking the ninth graders from National Tainan Chia- Chi Girl’s Senior High School as the object of study. Through investigation, interviews and document analysis, the results are as follows: 1. Students from high school dancing talented classes are mostly fairly satisfied with their appearance (mainly focusing on eyes and nose), but not with their body figure, which is mainly referred to their body proportion such as height, weight, and length of the legs. However, for them, above the focus on facial appearance and body figure, fitness is taken as the most important for a dancer. Taking the only male dancer in the class as an example, he wishes to have stronger muscles and more obvious muscle lines. Behind the unsatisfactory of their figures, is the hope to reach a more beautiful and ideal image of a dancer. 2. When dancing, the students in dancing talent class stated that the body experience is the communication between physical stimulation and emotional expression. On the physical side, one feels and understands the usage of the muscles, the control of the strength, and the level of tension and relaxation of the body while on the physiological side, one focuses on the expression of emotion through physical movements and vice versa. 3. Socio-cultural values and important others are both very important influences of the students’ body images while the impact of media not being really influential in comparison. Through the research, it is expected to gain more understanding on the body image and the physical experience of high school dancing talented class students, and to analyze the important factors that influence their body image of themselves in order to reduce the physical damages caused by the excessive self- control in pursuit of the ideal perfect body figure such as improper diet, in the process of the training and teaching of dancing talented classes.

This is done by questionnaires survey and documentary analysis, and the survey aims at the present dancing teachers around the country. Totally there were 58 copies of questionnaires collected. The data is analyzed by statistics methods such as frequencies distribution, percentage, Chi-square. Major findings were as follows: 1.Most junior high school dancing teachers are female, and they are about 31-40 years of age. Most of them graduated from the Dance Department of colleges, and have been teaching dancing less than 5 years. More than 67.2% are substitute teachers or part- time teachers. Moreover, among them, 87.2% didn’t acquire qualified certificates. 2.All the qualified junior high school dancing teachers had taken specialized dance courses, special education courses or credits in this country. They officially acquired certificates in these three courses or credits. 3.There are not many substitute junior high school dancing teachers. Five of them had taken specialized courses, special education courses, education courses or credits, but only two acquired certificates of qualified teachers. 4.The percentage of part-time dance teachers is as high as 58.6%. Among them, 97.1% had taken specialized dance courses, 26.5% had taken education courses, 20.6% had taken special education courses, but only 11.8% had acquired certificates of qualified dancing teachers 5.Although 58.6% of surveyed junior high school dancing teachers are for the opinion that to be a qualified junior high school teacher, one has to take at least 40 special education courses, still 41.4% are against it. What’s more, as many as 80% of substitute teachers are against it. 6.To be a qualified junior high school dancing teachers, one should not only have specialized capacity, but also take special education courses or education courses or credits, but the education authorities did not offer chances for these in-service education and training. Therefore, as many as 93.1% of junior high school teachers think that there are few chance for in-service education & training, and this is really not the basic spirits of the teacher education, which means to be diverse. No matter what in-service education with an academic degree (bachelors, doctors) or not, more than 80% of junior high school teachers are for the education & training. 7. 72.4 % of junior high school dancing teachers think that the supply/demand-balance is not yet achieved. Also 41.4% of teachers think that the system of practice teaching for the cultivation of dancing teachers is not mature yet. 8.The institutionalization of dance class in junior high schools and elementary schools has lasted for 20 years. Because the cultivation of dancing teachers had not been systemized, and the qualification of dancing teachers is demanding, 63.8% of teachers think that the “cultivation” and “employment” of secondary school dancing teachers don’t match each other. 9.The executive team for special education in the Ministry of Education is small with few members. It is really difficult for them to handle all the details of all kinds of special education countrywide. Hence, as many as 98.3% of secondary school dancing teachers think that the establishment of cultivation organization of dancing teachers is urgent. 10.The teachers of teaching cultivation organization are rather important. Universities or colleges with the Department of Dance have sufficient equipments, teachers, and the quality of teaching is recognized. About more than 70% of junior high school dancing teachers are for or positively for it. Key words: Dance, Gifted education, Teacher education

Abstract:
Primary art schools enjoy a long tradition in our country. The Primary Art School ``Kochana z Prachové{\crqq} in Strakonice celebrates already the 70th anniversary of its foundation. It is surprising that nobody has attempted to elaborate a comprehensive work concerning its history for the whole period. With respect to the fact that I have been teaching the piano playing here since 2006 and therefore I have become a part of it, I have chosen just the history thereof as the subject of my thesis. The Primary Art School participates in many cultural activities of the town of Strakonice and it is an important educational institution because it provides education to 750 pupils in four subjects - the musical, graphic, dancing and literary-dramatic ones and it prepares talented pupils for the study at secondary schools, colleges and universities focused on arts.

Abstract:
This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry (Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1990, 2001) and self-study to investigate ways to further understand and facilitate the integration of holistic philosophies of education with media literacy pedagogies. As founder and director of the Youth Media Literacy Project and a self-titled Imagitator (one who agitates imagination), I have spent over 10 years teaching media literacy in various high schools, universities, and community centres across North America. This study will focus on my own personal practical knowledge (Connelly & Clandinin, 1982) as a culture jammer, educator and cancer survivor to illustrate my original vision of a ‘holistic media literacy pedagogy’. This research reflects on the emergence and impact of holistic media literacy in my personal and professional life and also draws from relevant interdisciplinary literature to challenge and synthesize current insights and theories of media literacy, holistic education and culture jamming.
