The analysis carried out here are based on the typological-functional perspective whose principles are found on the Basic Linguistic Theory in Dixon (2010a,b; 2012) and Aikhenvald (2015). The data presented here were obtained in five field trips accomplished together with native speakers, methodology that is widely adopted in working with poorly-known languages. The results reached here point to a phonological system composed by twenty phonemes of which sixteen are consonants and four are vowels. These phonemes occur in a syllabic template (C)V for which the only restriction identified is the syllable /vu/. The prosody also includes constraint, in which only the last syllable more to the right receives the main stress of the phonological word. The major word classes are nouns and verbs, whilst the minor word classes are adjectives, adverbs, pronouns and demonstratives, quantifiers and numerals, locationals, postpositions, connectives and particles, interrogatives, and interjections. Whereas the nouns can receive few morphological markings in Deni, the verb morphology is synthetic, that is, many morphemes can be attached to the verbal word (morphemes of tense, aspect, mood, modality), as occurs in other languages of the family. The morphological criterion is the one adopted for the postulation of the subclasses in the present thesis. The language includes two basic types of clause, transitive and intransitive, which can receive optional peripheral arguments that are typically marked by case.

Full textA study into the process of freudian theorization, as applied to the psychopatholigical issues of bereavement in early childhood, entrances the patent enigma which lies with the relationship to someone else, through the enigmatic message stemming from the dead, as the node, the navel, of the mourning problematic. Talking up the knowledge of pain, we shall emphasize the forsaking of the notions of +pain experience ; and + outward frightful experience ;, as capping with a theory focused on otherness and exogenesis, and we shall insist upon the paramount importance of the process of avoidance (or diflection) of the memory of pain and fright: abwendung von der erinnerung. We suggest gathering the whole range of these experiences into the frame of the + human kin complex ; ( nebenmensch) as the primeval form of the distinctive relationship to others, in taking up the topics of pre-ambivalence, equivalence and the neuter issue. We shall further develop the negative psychic working weighing out the sequencing stages of denial, scotomisation, then negative hallucination. Thus early bereavement ensues a negative trauma, devoid of memory, a distorting of memory, a radical avoidance of otherness, related to a fate of presentation process, traces that signal the lack of traces, and that might show up through a range of negative symptoms telling off backward trends and + haunting ; avoided memories

Full textThis thesis is an ethnographic account of the Deni people, who live on the River Cuniuá at the Southwest corner of the Amazonas State and speak a language that belongs to the arawan family. This part of the Deni population currently lives in relative isolation from Brazilian society, which contrasts with the intense contacts of a few decades ago. The current situation is a direct result of historical factors such as the crisis of the extraction industry and the demarcation of native-land, and not the Denis own desire. The approach adopted by the present work focuses on, but is not limited by, Deni kinship. It addresses some elements of Deni cosmology, such as their relations with the whites, the nominated groups, the animals, as well as their conception of personhood, marriage and filiation, and demonstrates the manner in which kinship relates to several other elements of the their world. The present work conducts an exercise based on an experimental methodology for studies of genealogy, thus demonstrating how some aspects of the Deni cosmos play an influence on their marriage practices.

Full textThis study offers an overview, interpretation and critical evaluation of the theology of the Lutheran American theologian Robert Jenson. The first aim is to give an outline of his theology in such a way that the importance of the relation between God and time in his thought will become clear in this process. This study will therefore focus on specific themes in his theology and the implications for the current theological debate on time, eternity, history and God. The title was also the title of Jenson’s own early study of the work of Karl Barth, Alpha and Omega. Jenson’s theology is ecumenical by driven from the beginning to the end. He tries to formulate a theology for the one united church of the future. In his theology he thus focuses on early writers, the church fathers and on ecumenical confessions such as Nicea. He wants to get clarity why the church differs on certain points and investigates where it all started. He then brings his theology in connection with current Orthodox theologians, as well as with the Western theologians of different church traditions and tries to build on the common factors between them. His theology has an ecumenical aim, but it is first and foremost a theology written in reaction to postmodernism and especially the nihilism of his Western and primarily North-American cultural context. To find answers to these (ecumenical and nihilistic) questions, Jenson focuses on mainly three themes that will be discussed in this study: (1) the relation between time, eternity and Trinity, (2) the trinitarian identity and character of God, and (3) the importance of the narrative nature of theology. Jenson appropriates much of Karl Barth’s thought on the Trinity and on the Trinity’s relation to time and eternity but he draws much more radical implications and consequences. He therefore differs from Barth on these issues at critical points. Jenson stands in the tradition of eschatological and trinitarian theologians of the previous century and he builds his theology around these foci in order to serve his ecumenical aim. Finally the critical question is also asked whether and to what extent Jenson succeeds in his aim. It looks at the specific contributions Jenson made and which questions still remain unanswered regarding this key question for Christian faith, thought and life.
Terreblanche, Salomon Johannes. Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51925.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Article I: Subject and the realisation of ethical responsibility. The Idea of the Infinite in Levinas' Totality and Infinity. In Totality and Infinity Emmanuel Levinas writes about the categorical character of the ethical responsibility that the subject owes to the other. The confrontation with the suffering other puts the subject's natural self interest into question, and brings him to realise an ethical responsibility of which he cannot unburden himself. The question arises as to what in the constitution of the subject makes him susceptible to the realisation of ethical responsibility. This article illustrates that in order to accentuate ethical responsibility as strongly as he does, Levinas needs to take a quasi-metaphysical step. The "trace of the infinite" that "creation" has left on the finite subject, predisposes the subject to the appeal of the other. Levinas' use of words such as "God", "the Good", "creation" and "the Idea of Infinity" does not have a theological or a mystical underpinning. These metaphysical concepts are philosophical figures of speech that Levinas borrows from Plato and Descartes. Article II: Levinas and the question of socio-ethical responsibility in South Africa. The philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas contains far-reaching consequences for social ethics. This article gives an account of its significance for the South African situation. The lines that are taken up with regard to the question of guilt for the injustice in the South African social reality, are of two kinds. Either one is held guilty because of committing a gross human rights violation, or one is held guilty because of profiting from the apartheid system at the cost of others. Both these approaches depart from a concern with the historical processes that brought the injustices about. Levinas, however, offers an alternative approach. While he will more or less go along with the previous two approaches, he points to an ethical imperative with which the actual social reality confronts us. One can be held responsible, simply because one has always already done too little for those who are destitute. The ethical subject's pre-original openness to the appeal of others, makes him susceptible to the realisation of ethical responsibility. This is explained in a concise exegesis of Levinas' s work. The article concludes by considering the question of whether philosophers ought to give an account of the good social order, and whether they ought to tell us how it is to be reached.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Artikel I: Subjek en etiese verantwoordelikheidsbesef.
Engelbrecht, Schalk Willem Petrus. Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53708.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Utopia, Philosophy and Hermeneutics Exploring the thought of Gianni Vattimo Article I: The End of Utopia An explanation for the rise of distopia in popular culture with reference to the ideas of Gianni Vattimo In this article the development of utopianism is described by tracing it back to its original classical form, following it through its modernistic form and finally describing distopia as the postmodern form of utopia. Using the ideas of Gianni Vattimo, distopia is interpreted as the creative embodiment of the "counterfinality of reason". In this way distopia acts as a critique of modem rationalism. The question is raised if it is possible to speak of "the end of utopia" in postmodern times. It is concluded that utopian thought remains and functions as a necessary fiction in postmodern ethics. Article II: An Appropriate Postmodern Philosophy A discussion of the hermeneutics of Gianni Vattimo The aim of this article is to discuss the radical hermeneutics proposed by the Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo. Vattimo declares a radicalization of hermeneutics to be the only consistent, persuasive and valid approach to the postmodern conditions of existence we find ourselves in today. In order to explain what this approach entails, and how Vattimo justifies it, this article discusses his interpretation of the history (and end) of modernity, as well as his proposals for a new task for philosophy, and for a postmodern ethics.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: How can believers live meaningful in our postmodern, disordered world? The thesis of this study is that the German theologian, Michael Weiker's exciting understanding of pluralism can assist people to get along in a new way in our complex world. This study is in essence a project that aims to assist people to orientate themselves within a world in which they are confronted on a daily basis with a variety of ethical choices, a plurality of lifestyles and values, as well as conflicting claims of the truth in a variety of cultures and religions. This study's point of departure is that Welker's understanding of pluralism can be expressed comprehensively by means of the law-gospel relationship in his work. Welker's understanding of law and gospel is presented as a midway between the clashing mono-hierarchical, dualistic and relativistic views of how theology, the church, believers as well as people outside the church, should orientate themselves within our pluralistic world. For Welker, pluralism is not something that should threaten people, but rather a fragile social phenomenon that should be loved and cherished by humankind. According to Welker, Christianity can contribute to this because the Christian canon, dogmas and church carry a pluralistic form as such. Chapter 1 demonstrates Weiker's definition of, as well as his positive attitude towards pluralism. According to Welker, pluralism must be structured. It signifies a fine balance between the associative and systemic dimensions of experience. The relationship between law and gospel in both the Biblical traditions and post modern cultures holds the key for him to the correct structuring of pluralism in the academic world, in modern societies as well as between cultures which are always threatened by either the mono-hierarchical or relativistic forms of pluralism. Chapter 2 indicates that according to Welker the law means that creation is constituted by associative, interdependent structural patterns, which promote and maintain life as such. Welker's understanding of the law means that, together with other postmodern theories, theology confirms the pluralistic nature of the world. The law balances the associative and systemic dimensions of pluralism by pluralising in judicial -, mercy - and cultural laws. The pluralism of the law in the Old Testament can help our modern world to structure the public sphere of society in such a way that justice and truth can be achieved in order to establish a collective future for all mankind. In Chapter 3 it becomes clear that sin can render the good law of God powerless and that all forms of pluralism are not necessarily good. For Welker, knowledge of creation (the law) means finite knowledge. Sin means for Welker the abolition and isolation of the associative character and interdependency of the differential spheres of creation. According to Welker, the absolutising of either the associative or the systemic dimensions of pluralism renders the law of God, as in Biblical traditions, powerless in modern societies. This in turn leads to chaotic relativism or to oppressing, totalitarian systemic forms of pluralism. The reality of sin means that it becomes impossible for theology to legitimise all postmodern theories, uncritically. The question remains, how is it possible to distinguish between good and bad forms of pluralism? Chapter 4 argues that Welker's understanding of the gospel can assist us with this problematic issue. The gospel, with the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ at its centre, signifies for Welker the revelation of the power of sin on the one hand, whilst on the other hand it reveals the freedom of the gospel. The cross of Christ exposes for Welker how the differential structural patterns of creation can degenerate in societies, whilst faith in the risen One signifies the revelation of the structural relations which is given in Christ. Christ's resurrection therefore means hope for creation. Welker argues that the Spirit maintains the associative and systemic dimensions of pluralism in creation. This is done by realising the intentions of the law, namely justice, mercy and complete knowledge of God in the public sphere of societies without uplifting the natural, social and cultural differentiation that exists between people and groups of people. The chaotic individualism and the mono-hierarchical degeneration of functional systems in our society lead to a feeling of powerlessness in modern societies. Opposed to this, the Spirit creates an alternative public community of holy ones that has not grown out of traditional, moral or political consensus. This community, associative and systemic, congregational and ecumenical, as body of the crucified and risen One, realises the kingdom of God universally under a variety of finite, particular circumstances in creation. Chapter 5 evaluates the practical results of Welker's law-gospel distinction. Pluralism can, according to Welker, easily be damaged within our mass- and functional societies. As alternative, people should learn to cherish and love pluralism. The benefit of Welker's law-gospel distinction is that it generates criteria, which can assist to distinguish between good and bad forms of pluralism. His drawing together of the associative and systemic dimensions of pluralism helps us to see that modern societies will gain nothing in falling back on personal and interpersonal experiences and reality constructions. People must rather accept the challenge to live complex, creative and interdisciplinary lives.

Full textThe common dentex, Dentex dentex (Linnaeus, 1758), is an iconic marine coastal bony fish in the Mediterranean Sea. The common dentex, due to its large size, flesh quality, and high commercial value, is targeted by both artisanal and recreational fishing, especially in Corsica. As a top predator, it is a potential indicator species for the structure and functioning of the coastal ecosystems on which it depends. D. dentex is classified by the IUCN as «Vulnerable». Despite its economic and ecological importance, scientific data on this species in its natural environment are still very scant. The aim of this thesis is to improve the state of knowledge on fisheries, biology and population structure of D. dentex in Corsica. First, a review evaluates the current literature on D. dentex biology, ecology, stock structure, fisheries on its global geographical range. In general, there is a lack of information, but across the developed axes, this manuscript provided a clear view of the current state of knowledge on D. dentex and suggests future research directions to fill important gaps. Secondly, a study was conducted to determine which factors could influence the spatial and temporal variations in catches (CPUE) by artisanal fisheries and describe the demographic structure of the population exploited in Corsica. The CPUE varies over spatial (depth) and temporal scales (month), but show annual stability. The results exhibits a peak of exploitation during May (large/old specimens), probably related to reproductive strategies,. This study generated the first fine scale maps showing the spatial exploitation of common dentex and the identification of exploited fishing grounds clearly indicates the existence of ‘hot spots’, which probably represent essential habitats, of the life history of this species. Third, a study compared the exploitation of common dentex by artisanal and recreational fishing in the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve. It is targeted by a wide variety of gears; longline (artisanal fishing) and trolling (recreational fishing) have the highest rate of exploitation. Spatially, catches were quantitatively maximal in partially protected areas. The results suggest also that recreational fishing contributes significantly to total fishing mortality of the common dentex in the study area (3.4 t/year or 37 % of the total catch). Then, a comparison of three methods of age estimation (scales, whole and sectioned otoliths) was performed to evaluate which structure was the most reliable and accurate and define the growth parameters in Corsica. The scales appear suitable for estimating age between 0 and 5 years old, whole otoliths can be used up to 12 years and sectioned otoliths are the most accurate and reliable structure for all age ranges (age record of 36 years). The growth rate of the Corsican common dentex seems very high and quite fast compared to previous studies in the Mediterranean Sea. Finally, the aim of the last chapter was to identify the stock structure of the common dentex around Corsica Island, using a combination of markers that have different spatial and temporal scales of integration: microsatellite DNA markers, otolith shape analysis and parasites communities. A complex population structure around Corsican coasts has been reported, providing a new perspective on common dentex fishery stock conservation and management strategies. This thesis make a significant contribution to the knowledge of several aspects of the fisheries, biology and population structure of common dentex around Corsica Island and recommends protection measures to promote sustainable management of this important halieutic resource in Corsica

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Critical theory forms part of the foundation of the South African school curriculum. The development of critical thinking is part of the general aims of the curriculum. This study will investigate the possibility of developing critical thinking through the use of drama as a teaching method in the subject Life Orientation in the further education and training phase (FET) Grades 10-12. This problem statement will be researched through a quantitative literature study. The school curriculum underwent a transformation since 1994 from a content- and teacher driven curriculum to an experience- and student centred approach to teaching. New subjects were also included in the curriculum such as Life Orientation. There are, however, various implementation problems with regards to Life Orientation. These implementation problems can mainly be attributed to the insufficient in- and pre service training that teachers receive and their inability to use progressive teaching methods. The Life Orientation curriculum does, however, provide opportunity for the development of critical thinking skills. The concept of critical theory will be investigated as philosophical and theoretical basis for this study. The influence of critical theory on the critical pedagogy of Freire will be discussed to show the relationship between education and critical theory. Furthermore, the influence of critical theory on the development of Brecht’s Epic theatre will also be investigated. Finally, a definition for critical thinking will be put forward, after which the question whether critical thinking is developed through the school curriculum will be investigated. Different approaches to drama as a teaching method is briefly discussed. Dorothy Heathcoat’s approach to drama in education is chosen as a focus for this study as she uses drama as a teaching method to teach subject content and to develop thinking skills through reflection. Heathcote uses Brecht’s Epic theatre techniques to alienate the students in order for them to critically reflect on the content that is being taught. Process drama is a more accessible approach to drama in education, but it uses the same core elements namely improvisation, role-play and reflection. Process drama consists of an improvised role-play where the class collectively takes part and the teacher-in-role steers the educational experience through questions that leads to reflection. It is during this reflection that critical thinking is developed. Process drama can be used to teach the content of Life Orientation and develop critical thinking. It, however, requires the teacher to be the director, actor, writer, teacher and self-audience. During the planning of the process drama lesson the teacher also has to follow a certain process where the theme, contexts, roles, dramatic focus, tension elements and signs for the lesson is identified. To illustrate how drama as a teaching method can be used in Life Orientation, three lesson plans are provided.
