Full textCounting differs from the two other quantification processes by its theoretical importance in the development of the concept of number and by its role in subitizing and estimation. Counting an array of objects requires to point each and very object and to say the numberwords in the correct order. These two activities must be coordinate to determine the cardinal of the array. Within the framework of Baddeley's model (1990), counting would require the setting of the phonological loop and the visual sketch-pad, taken in charge respectively the phonological and the visual-spatial information. The coordination would be taking in charge by the central executive and would induce an extra-cost. This cost would be added to the specific cost of the pointing and the saying. Moreover, it would decrease with age (case, 1985). Thus, the hypothesis of a costly coordination would imply that (1) the counting time would be longer than the time require by the slowest activity (pointing or saying) and (2) the number of errors in counting would be greater than the number of errors predicted from the pointing and the saying. This hypothesis was never verified in any of the four experiments presented and in any age group (adults, 6, 8 and 10-year-old children). Nevertheless, each experiment showed an effect of the manipulated factors on the cost of each activity (pointing, saying and counting). To conclude, counting would be, since 6-year-old, a procedure requiring no coordination taking in charge by a central system

Full textThis work introduces a new nonparametric approach by discrete associatedkernels for count data. First, we define the discrete kernel associated to a discrete probability distribution and we examine its basical properties. Furthermore, we construct the discrete associated-kernel estimator which is the analog of some one in the continuous case of the last decade. We investigate their properties ; in particular, we show the pointwise convergence of the estimator in the sense of mean squared error. The choice of bandwidth is mainly done through cross-validation and excess of zeros. For illustrating, we study some discrete probability distributions such that Poisson, binomial, negative binomial, that we consider as associated-kernels. Thus, we need to improve it by introducing a new discrete probability distribution, called triangular, in order to serve as symmetric associated-kernel. The discrete associated-kernel method is then used for a semiparametric estimation of count distributions and, also, for nonparametric regression on a count explanatory variable. This discrete associated-kernel method is illustrated through simulations and real examples of count data. For a sample size not so large, the importance and the performance of discrete associated-kernels are pointed out compared with the Dirac type kernel and, sometimes, the continuous ones

Full textThe Poisson model is a benchmark model for the statistical analysis of the count data. Sometimes count data exhibit overdispersion or underdispersion resulting in the lack of the Poisson model. The aim of this work is to present an overview of the probability models that can provide alternative framework for the statistical analysis of count data, among others, Katz's model and the weighted Poisson model. Some weighted Poisson models will be fitted on the data collected in Republic of Congo and related to a sample of spiraling whitefly Aleurodicus dispersus Russell (Homoptera : Aleyrodidae) described by the preimaginal span (from eggs to adult stage) measured on days, the total number of eggs and the laying span. The linear regression issue between these three variables will be discussed as well. We must afterwards evaluate the performances of some tests procedures devoted to valid the fitness of count data by Poisson distribution against general alternatives of overdispersion or underdispersion. Thus, we compare the Chisquare test of Pearson to tests constructed from statistics which are obtained by the BoxCox transformation of Fisher dispersion index and of its inverse

Full textThe sub-population of wards in France has changed significantly, both in size and composition, sinceLaw no. 68-5 of 3 January 1968 on incapacitated adults came into force. However, a lack a statisticaldata means it is still badly known. To improve our knowledge of the sub-population of wards, ademographic analysis of its dynamics was conducted. The purpose was to fill knowledge gaps relatingto the existing population of vulnerable adults under guardianship (e.g. number, sex, age) and to thecharacteristics of the court orders establishing, amending or ending guardianship (e.g. frequency, flows). Thanks to a multi-source approach the study identifies what derives from the changes inbehaviour relating to the establishment of guardianship and from the changes undergone by the Frenchpopulation in terms of age structure and health. The study highlights a strong but changing relationshipbetween the type of guardianship and the characteristics of individual wards. The study may also serveas a starting point for further analysis of the sub-population of wards following recent changes in thelaw

Full textThe polyhedral model is a well-known framework in the field of automatic program optimization. Iterations and array references in affine loop nests are represented by integer points in bounded polyhedra, or (parametric) Z-polytopes. In this thesis, three new counting algorithms have been developed: counting integer points in a parametric Z-polytope, in a union of parametric Z-polytopes and in their images by affine functions. The result of such a counting is given by one or many multivariate polynomials in which the coefficients may be periodic numbers. These polynomials, known as Ehrhart quasipolynomials, are defined on sub-sets of the parameter values called validity domains or chambers. Many affine loop nest analysis and optimization methods require such counting algorithms. We applied them in array linearization which achieves memory compression and improves spatial locality of accessed data. Besides program optimization, the proposed algorithms have many other applications, as in mathematics and economics

Full textPopulation censuses of male rock ptarmigans (Lagopus muta) are conducted by point count protocol in spring (late May - early June). Several observers are placed at given points within the area and spend an hour listening to singing males to try to deduce an estimate of their number. The counting conditions are diffcult and cast doubt on the good representativeness of this protocol. The first objective of this thesis was to quantify the counting biases. The thesis then focused on finding ways to develop new counting methods to compensate for the biases of traditional counting. The acoustic signals emitted by animals carry several levels of information, such as the identity of the transmitter. The second part of my thesis showed that bioacoustic techniques based on acoustic differences in vocalizations were suitable to ptarmigan and that it was possible to determine the number of males in an area using the sounds they produce. The third part of the thesis is a generalization of the method on longterm recordings under real field conditions. It was not only possible to obtain the number of males but also the time of presence of each male and to assess his reproductive status. In conclusion, I showed the interest of the bioacoustic tool to monitor ptarmigan’s populations. My thesis opens up perspectives for futur large scale temporal and spatial monitoring of ptarmigan’s populations
Pestova, Valentina. "Coefficients de fiabilité et approche hierarchique pour la detection et le dénombrement de petits objets dans une vidéo." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018BORD0462/document.
Full textThe problem of counting of big volumes of very small moving objects in videos is a domain, which was not studied to date. The difficulty of this application consists essentially in the fact, that because of very small sizes of objects, apparent in the videos, it is impossible to define a reliable geometric model of these objects. The researches, existing in the domain of object detection in videos frequently use a geometrical model of objects of interest. For this reason, the existing methods of object detection cannot be applied for the detection of very small objects in the study case. This thesis proposes a complete methodology, allowing the detection of very small objects in videos, and designed particularly the detection and counting of migrating birds in videos. An innovative principle and the solution of this problem consist in association of coefficients of detection reliability to the objects, in order to count them, avoiding counting of many false detections. The solution proposes a hierarchical algorithm, which analyses the spatial and temporal aspects of objects (their appearance and evolution in time) in a video, by the means of methods of image processing, statistics, and fuzzy logic. The aim of the reliability coefficients is to estimate the probability, that the parameters of a detected objects conform to the expected parameters of the objects of interest. Finally, the coefficients are put together and converted into a value, which evaluates the sequence of processing, applied to detect an object. The sum of these values corresponds to the number of the objects of interest in a video. The results show, that the most of correct detections are characterized in the counting by the reliability coefficient equal or close to 1. The results show, that the most of correct detections have their reliability coefficients close to 1, and the false detection are deleted or have low reliability coefficients. The counting results in the videos with numerous groups of migrating birds are close to the ground trough. This validates the proposed solution as a method of automatic counting of objects in videos

Full textThis contribution is an overview of some of our commissioned research carried out over the last eight years. First we have attempted to state the conditions for contractual research to gain as much scientific reliability as possible. Then we have questioned the method used in our seven research reports - be then quantitative or qualitative depending on our problematics and objects studied. It is often believe that the choice of one or the over divides sociological activity, the latter being granted a more scientific status. We offer to demonstrate that the quantitative outlook does not preclude original effects nor the sociological production immune to subjectivity in a quantitative readind of social phenomena, we have tried to show the place of the commission in contractual researchs and how it is only one aspect of the global social one. Besides we had analysed how numbering involves heterogeneous intellectual operations on integers and real numbers and how its brings out form, that is to say the qualitative aspect of things

Full textThe present study was chiefly conducted in the compiegne (oise) and rambouillet (yvelines) state forests. Its aim was to bring out the main elements of the biology of the woodcock, scolopax rusticola, in order to propose a census method. This species seems to be a rather frequent nesting bird in france. The breeding season lasts from february through august with a peak in egglaying in march. A census method can only be performed if it is based upon the singing males. The individual recognition of males from their songs makes the quantitative interpretation of censuses easier at the listening points and proves that the number of contacts can be used as an index of relative abundance. The months of may and june are the most favourable ones for censusing : the greatest number of individuals are flying in the evening (roding) in a regular manner and their spatial-temporal distribution within a forest which appears to be aggregative all over the breeding season, is still more so in may. The drawing points are always in the areas suitable for breeding. After a validity check of the resulting data at a national level, a census method is described. The basis of this census method is a single session of observation in may-june, at a fixed randomly defined listening point. The results are expressed as a relative frequency of occurence. A test of the census technique at a regional level is presented

Full textThe main asset of constraint programming is its wide variety of algorithms that comes from the major areas of artificial intelligence, logic programming and operational research. It offers specialists a limitless range of possible configurations to tackle combinatorial problems, but it becomes an obstacle to the wider diffusion of the paradigm. The current tools are very far from being used as a black-box tool, and it assumes a good knowledge of the field, in particular regarding the parametrization of solvers. In this thesis, we propose to analyze the behavior of cardinality constraints with probabilistic models and counting tools, to automatically parameterize constraint solvers: heuristics of choice of variables and choice of values and search strategies

Full textIn the field of funerary anthropology, the quantitative osteology analysis constitute a preliminary approach necessary to the comprehension of a deposit because they inform on the composition of the exhumed population. Applied to osseous gatherings giving a great number of remains, split up and intricate in a kind of anatomical disorder, these studies are difficult to handle. By definition, the deposits concerned are thus collective burials, a fortiori if there are secondary deposits. Through the estimate of the minimum number of subjects (MNI) present in the chalcolithic level of the collective burial of the dolmen of Peirières (Aude, France), this work aims at highlighting the theoretical problems related to quantitative osteology, that is from the point of view of the methods or the application of these, as well as the anatomical areas most relevant to the counting of the subjects starting from fragmented series. In order to carry out this work, the NMI estimations are based on the traditional methods of counting of the osseous and dental gatherings on the one hand, on the ponderal analysis on the other hand, method used in the case of incinerations. It appears that the qualitative character of a deposit conditions the results of the quantitative analysis. NMI and ponderal indices confrontation show that fragmentation led to particular osteological profiles. In such cases, a choice of precise anatomical areas and a systematization of ponderal analysis thus appear essential for a sound interpretation of the results. It also appears that the concepts of quantitative osteology, such as defined, are not easily applicable to extremely fragmented osseous deposits. Eventually, a series of comparisons of the results from some collective burials of the same period seems to point to a redundancy as far as numbers are concerned or the relevance of certain parts of the skeleton in term of counting

Full textListeria Monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen causing 20 to 30% lethality. A better knowledge of the parameters having an impact on its growth in food is of great importance in Listeria Monocytogenes quantitative risk analysis. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of Listeria spp. Population on L. Monocytogenes growth. It appeared that interactions between Listeria cells from the same strain or from different strains and species had a low impact on their growth. Nevertheless, the initial L. Monocytogenes population density influence the final contamination levels and the time necessary to attain this final concentration. Hence, it is an important factor to be taken into account in quantitative risk analysis. During this study, an enumeration method adapted to low L. Monocytogenes contamination levels was developped

Full textThe enumeration of the infirm in France in the 19th century had several objectives: to map their geographical distribution, in order to better understand the causes of these disabilities and to provide suitable facilities (asylums, educational institutions), but also to track trends in view to potentially control and decrease the size of this group. This study addresses the quantification of disability through two data sources: the five-year censuses (1851-1876) and the reports of army recruitment (published from 1818 onwards). We study how these figures were constructed, from their initial implementation until they started being challenged. To do so, we also explore the place of the disabled in society, and the role of the State in their care. We deal with the interactions between scientists (gathered in learned societies or in conferences to share their research) and various governance bodies (mayors, prefects, ministries). The former studied this population for scientific reasons, while the latter for administrative purposes. Comparing these divergent interests highlights however a common anxiety: that they were observing a degeneration of the population. Because of the regularity of data outputs, time trends, which until then had not been available, could now be constructed. Statisticians and doctors could therefore use these new statistical figures to demonstrate the exaggeration of these fears

Full textWastewater reclamation is an ongoing and promising alternative resource in a context of water stress. In particular, this is a major issue in the Mediterranean region, and its effects tend to be intensified by global warming. The main objective of this PhD thesis is to define the conditions for ensuring the reliability of a tertiary treatment chain for wastewater reclamation. The first part deals with the limits of the methods used in routine for the enumeration of indicator microorganisms, in relation with particulate contamination. The results indicate that there is a risk of underestimation by these methods for high loads of suspended matter.Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection has been used for years to ensure the biological safety of reclaimed water. The second part of this work aims to understand the mechanisms which may affect the efficiency of UV disinfection. A linear relationship has been observed between the particulate contamination of the effluents to be treated and the disinfection efficiency loss, featured on one hand by the decrease of the inactivation constant of the microorganisms and on the other hand by the risk of tailing (UV-resistant fraction among the microorganisms). The implementation of a pre-filtration is thus necessary before UV disinfection. The third part of this work enabled to identify the filtration parameters suited for the effluents to be treated. Finally, quality control on the whole chain is considered, in particular with the demonstration of feasibility of a continuous control system based on UV/Visible spectrometry

Full textThe genus Astragalus L. (Fabaceae) is one of the genera with the largest number of representatives among the angiosperms. Its center of origin and diversity is located in the arid mountains of Central and Southwest Asia. In Lebanon, this genus is also one of the most represented genera in the flora, with 62 species and subspecies and 22 endemic species identified. The different taxa of this genus are difficult to identify based only on morphological characters and their current status of distribution must be evaluated. Phylogenetic relationships, changes in genome size and the role of polyploidy in the evolution of Astragalus genus in the Lebanese mountains range were studied. Our data confirm that a significant interspecific chromosomal polymorphism exists in the genus Astragalus of Lebanon and polyploidy and the subsequent evolution of the genome may be important drivers of the evolution of this genus. The diversification process of Astragalus genus that took place in Lebanon was analyzed using phylogenetic and molecular dating methods and analysis of ancestral areas. Our results confirm that Lebanon is the third center of diversity and should be considered as a "cradle" of biodiversity. Therefore, this study is a contribution to a better understanding of evolutionary and biogeographic processes behind the development of biodiversity in Lebanon, with an applied purpose of biogeographic conservation

Full textOur goal is to prove new results in graph theory and combinatorics thanks to the speed of computers, used with smart algorithms. We tackle four problems. The four-colour theorem states that any map of a world where all countries are made of one part can be coloured with 4 colours such that no two neighbouring countries have the same colour. It was the first result proved using computers, in 1989. We wished to automatise further this proof. We explain the proof and provide a program which proves it again. It also makes it possible to obtain other results with the same method. We give potential leads to automatise the search for discharging rules. We also study the problems of domination in grids. The simplest one is the one of domination. It consists in putting a stone on some cells of a grid such that every cell has a stone, or has a neighbour which contains a stone. This problem was solved in 2011 using computers, to prove a formula giving the minimum number of stones needed depending on the dimensions of the grid. We successfully adapt this method for the first time for variants of the domination problem. We solve partially two other problems and give for them lower bounds for grids of arbitrary size.We also tackled the counting problem for dominating sets. How many dominating sets are there for a given grid? We study this counting problem for the domination and three variants. We prove the existence of asymptotic growths rates for each of these problems. We also give bounds for each of these growth rates. Finally, we study polyominoes, and the way they can tile rectangles. They are objects which generalise the shapes from Tetris: a connected (of only one part) set of squares. We tried to solve a problem which was set in 1989: is there a polyomino of odd order? It consists in finding a polyomino which can tile a rectangle with an odd number of copies, but cannot tile any smaller rectangle. We did not manage to solve this problem, but we made a program to enumerate polyominoes and try to find their orders, discarding those which cannot tile rectangles. We also give statistics on the orders of polyominoes of size up to 18
