Abstract:
Issues of scale are becoming increasingly important to paleobiological interpretations of the fossil record. Nevertheless, a number of biological processes display scale-independent behaviors. The effects of predation on the distribution of dense populations of epifaunal, suspension-feeding ophiuroids are scale-independent, at scales ranging from the microecological to the macroevolutionary. On a microecological scale (meters to kilometers, hours to days), dense ophiuroid populations are limited in shallow-water environments by predatory fishes and crabs. On a larger, ecological scale (tens to hundreds of kilometers, decades to centuries), circumstantial evidence indicates that oceanographically driven, multidecadal cycles of predator abundance determine the abundance of ophiuroids throughout the western English Channel. On a macroevolutionary scale (millions to tens of millions of years, global spatial scale), dense, autochthonous assemblages of ophiuroids declined in conjunction with the Mesozoic diversification of modern shell-crushing predators: teleostean fishes, decapod crustaceans, and neoselachian sharks. The sporadic reappearance of dense ophiuroid populations in a late Eocene, shallow marine deposit in Antarctica suggests that predator-prey relationships were disrupted as temperatures declined in the region at that time. Scale-independence is a useful model for explaining and predicting patterns of distribution of dense ophiuroid populations in time and space.

Abstract:
To improve the spatial resolution, dense multichannel electroencephalogram with more than 32 leads has gained more and more applications. However, strong common interference will not only conceal the weak components generated from the specific isolated neural source, but also lead to severe spurious correlation between different brain regions, which results in great distortion on brain connectivity or brain network analysis. Starting from the fast independent component analysis algorithm, we first derive the mixing matrix of independent source components based on the baseline signals prior to tasks. Then, we identify the common interferences as those components whose mixing vectors span the minimum angles with respect to the unitary vector. By assuming that both the common interferences and their corresponding mixing vectors stay consistent during the entire experiment, we apply the demixing and mixing matrix to the task signals and remove the inferred common interferences. Subsequently, we validate the method using simulation. Finally, the index of global coherence is calculated for validation. It turns out that the proposed method can successfully remove the common interferences so that the prominent coherence of mu rhythms in motor imagery tasks is unmasked. The proposed method can gain wide applications because it reveals the true correlation between the local sources in spite of the low signal-to-noise ratio.

Breast cancer is the second type of cancer that most a ects women in the world, losing only for non melanoma skin cancer. Breast density can hinder the location of masses, especially in early stages. In this work, the use of independent component analysis for detecting and segmentation lesions in dense breasts is proposed. Several works suggests the use of computer aided diagnosis, increasing sensitivity to over 90% in detecting cancer in non dense breasts, however there are few published studies about detecting in dense breasts. To analyse its e ciency in relation to other segmentation techniques, we compare the performance with principal component analysis. To measure the quality of the segmentation obtained by the two methods, a area overlay measure will be used. To verify if there was any di erence between the results of the proposed methods in the detection of lesions in nondense breasts and in dense breasts, a statistic test for two proportions was used. Experimental results on the Mini-MIAS and DDSM database showed an accuracy of 92.71% in detecting masses in nondense and 79.17% in dense breasts. All experiments showed that the ICA lters have a better performance for detect lesions in dense breast, compared with PCA. Contrary to previous works, our experiments showed that there is actually a signi cant di erence between the detection of masses in dense and nondense breasts. This study can help specialist to detect lesions in dense breast.

No capítulo 3 participaram 633 idosos independentes.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to evaluate determinants of general and oral health among a cohort of independently living older adults residents in Carlos Barbosa, Brazil. In chapter 1 it was performed a systematic review to assess the oral health measures that were related to frailty. To the other chapters it was used data from the study about the elderly population of Carlos Barbosa held in 2004. The measures comprised a questionnaire with information about socio-demographic, behavioral, access to services, medical history, depression, physical activity and oral examination, also anthropometric and frailty assessments. In chapter 2, a cross-sectional exploratory study nested in a major cohort, the aim was to investigate if poor oral health acts as a associate factor for the presence of frailty. In chapter 3, the aim was to investigate if poor oral health status contributes to the development of general (BMI) and central obesity (WC). In chapter 4 the aim was to determine tooth loss incidence after 8 years and its predictors among community-living older adults in a southern Brazilian city. Descriptive and bivariate analysis were performed Associations with the outcomes will be assessed using binary logistic regression, multinomial logistic regression, longitudinal multilevel regression and negative binomial regression adjusting for confounding variables. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria, 07 of them were cross-sectional and 05 were cohort studies. From the 12 papers, 41.7% (n=5) were rated as GOOD and 8.3% (n=1) as POOR. In chapter 2, 389 elders participated and after controlling for age, family income and marital status the analysis found that those who needed dental prosthesis were 2 times more likely to be prefrail/frail when compared to those who did not need (OR=2.0, CI95% 1.1-3.7) as well as those with a higher number of missing teeth (OR=1.0, CI95% 1.0-1.1), those who smoked at least a hundred cigarettes in (OR=2.5, CI95% 1.4-4.7) and those who were depressed (OR=2.8, CI95% 1.2-6.9). For chapter 3 a total of 633 independently-living elders participated. Individuals who never visited a dentist were more likely to be obese (OR=3.02, 95%CI:1.25-7.26) according to the BMI and the need for a full mandibular denture increased the risk for being obese according to their waist-circumference ratio-WC (OR=4.38, 95%CI:1.34-14.32). Regarding BMI, edentulous subjects with full dentures in both arches (OR=0.23, 95%CI:0.06-0.84) and those who perceived their oral health as unsatisfactory, according to the WC (OR=0.43, 95%CI:0.19-0.88), had a lower likelihood of being obese. In chapter 4 the mean number of teeth in risk (baseline mean number of teeth) was 10.50±7.09 and mean teeth present at 8-years follow-up was 9.06±7.3. Complete data was available for 193 participants. Being female (RR=0.65, 95%CI 0.49-0.86), not using a partial removable prosthesis (RR=0.73, 95%CI 0.56-0.97) were associated with lower risk of tooth loss. Having more bleeding sites was associated with higher risk of tooth loss (RR=1.008, 95%CI 1.003-1.01). Poor oral health is associated with frailty and it is a risk factor for central and general obesity and also for tooth loss

Pyle, Sandra Joanne. "The instructional leadership role of the principal in independent schools : towards 21st century classrooms." Diss., 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/22726.

Full text
Abstract:
Students no longer respond to content-driven, teacher-centred learning. Literature reveals that changes in methodology and pedagogy of teachers needs to take place in order to keep education relevant and engaging. Classrooms where critical thinking, communication, creativity and collaboration are embraced are required in schools. The environment where these components are present can be referred to as 21st century classrooms. Establishing these locales require a leader who is able to create the vision for the changes that need to take place. One who will fashion a learning environment where teachers feel secure and have the confidence through teacher development to embark on and embrace a new arrangement in their classroom. The principal needs to embrace his/her instructional role in establishing these 21st century classrooms. This research project investigated precisely what the instructional role of the principal necessitates in aiding teachers to establish 21st century classrooms. A qualitative research design, embedded in the constructivist paradigm in the form of a hermeneutic study was chosen as research method. Using semi-structured interviews, the researcher attempted to find out how the principal of each school visited, viewed 21st century classrooms, as well as what skills and knowledge he/she required as the instructional leader in leading teachers to establish 21st century classrooms. The researcher used purposeful sampling to select the participants who would have the greatest insight into establishing 21st century classrooms at their school. Trustworthiness was ensured in the collection and interpretation of data. The researcher transcribed the collected data and it was later analysed. Once analysed, the data was interpreted and arranged under the research sub-questions. The findings established that each participant is quite knowledgeable concerning the attributes and characteristics of a 21st century classroom. Many of the principals played a strong instructional role in their school and displayed many of the characteristics and skills necessary to create an environment where teachers could competently bring 21st century skills and knowledge into their classrooms. In most of the schools visited, 21st century classrooms are well on their way to being established. It is evident that the theory of 21st century classrooms is far more prevalent in some of the schools visited than the practical application thereof. In some of the schools visited a whole philosophy of learning, which encases all the 21st century attributes has been implemented. Each school could be placed on a continuum, with no one school being at the same space in their journey to implement 21st century skills and knowledge into their teachers’ pedagogy.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the relationship between union leaders and intellectuals, which today has become more entangled than at any time since the 1940s. If one has a generous definition of “intellectual,” it is easy to find lots of students, academics, researchers, journalists, and writers, many of radical pedigree, working in, around, and for the U.S. labor movement. Unions have long sought help from high-profile outsiders in support of their strikes, bargaining agendas, and political objectives, but today these connections have grown so dense that some of these figures, many pro-labor academics, now find themselves enlisted, at times even drafted, into the disputes that have recently wracked some of the nation's key unions. Not since the early Cold War split the labor movement and divided American liberals have otherwise independent writers and academics played such a public role inside the labor movement.

Abstract:
AbstractMalnutrition is observed in around one in three hospital inpatients; this harmful ICD10-AM-coded disease is a strong independent predictor of adverse older adult and healthcare outcomes, mortality, and treatment costs globally, particularly in multimorbid, older adults. Despite recognition of malnutrition as a disease, nutrition support prescriptions are often not valued as the medicine to treat it. This chapter is devoted to the common nutrition support prescriptions for treating malnutrition: (1) protein- and energy-dense and/or fortified foods, fluids, and menus (HPHE support); (2) oral nutrition supplements; (3) enteral tube feeding; and (4) parenteral nutrition.

Abstract:
This chapter determines stellar properties from seismic data. It discusses how the average seismic properties discussed in the previous chapters are used in determining the mass and radius of a star. The chapter provides two ways of determining stellar properties: the “direct method” and grid-based modeling. The first method produces a set of model-independent results derived from a set of equations. On the other hand, the grid-based model, which can make up for the shortcomings of the direct method, derives its results from a fairly dense grid of stellar models of different metallicities that cover a wide range of masses and evolutionary stages.

Abstract:
Lawrence Alloway's scope as an art critic became international in 1950, but his criticism only changed significantly the following year after a review of a Roberto Matta exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA). This review marked Alloway's transition from connoisseurship and simple evaluation to a far more dense and demanding art criticism. This section focuses on Alloway's life as an art critic in the period 1952–1961. It provides an overview of ICA in the early 1950s and its Independent Group, Alloway's attitudes toward abstraction and figurative art, his cultural continuum model, his views on graphics and advertising, art autre, Alloway's first trip to the United States, and the emergence of Pop art.

Abstract:
The hyperspectral microwave atmospheric sounder (HyMAS), for weather and climate missions, is capable of all-weather sounding equivalent to hyperspectral infrared sounders (in which clouds decrease the accuracy of the results) in clear air with vertical resolution of approximately 1 km. This will improve both the vertical and horizontal resolutions of the atmosphere. Through the use of independent RF antennas that sample the volume of the Earth's atmosphere through various levels of frequencies, thereby producing a set of dense, spaced vertical weighting functions, hyperspectral microwave is achieved. This yields surface precipitation rate and water path retrievals for small hail, soft hail, or snow pellets, snow, rainwater, etc. with high accuracies. One of HyMAS requirements is a graphical user interface (GUI). Hyperspectral measurements allow the user to determine the Earth's temperature with vertical resolution exceeding 1km (1093.61 yards).

Abstract:
What role do research and researchers play in reforming the global governance of international migration? Whereas research has played a role in identifying and systematizing the weaknesses within migration’s global governance systems, it has an extremely limited ability to shape actual reform. Effecting reform rather depends on political opportunity. However, the presence of researchers is often used to legitimize the idea of global governance without requiring action, while attendance at high-level events are used by academics to confirm their importance and impact. However, there are opportunities also for independent researchers to be policy-relevant. First, by not letting good academic research be buried underneath dense postmodern phrasing, but rather be articulated so that policy-makers can grasp the content. Second, by using the potential for innovative collaborations with policy-makers; collaborations in which researchers help design and build projects, in which research is not the precursor but the parallel to action.

Abstract:
This chapter explores a dualistic system of environmental relations, one so ancient that it has evolved over time. The modern Hindi and Urdu term jangal means “dense forest,” but the ancient Sanskrit term from which it derives, jangala, referred to the arid, open savanna landscape of western India, which was culturally differentiated from the anupa wet forests of eastern India. There are other differences beyond the vegetative: whereas the jangala encompassed both wild and domestic space, the jangal is strictly the home of the wild; whereas the ancient jangala encompassed all that was civilized, the modern jangal excludes all that is civilized. The jangala encompassed both nature and culture, but the modern jangal is strictly the abode of nature. The encompassing of both wild and domestic within the ancient jangala supports the work of scholars like William Cronon, who see the Western dichotomy between society and wilderness as a product of modernity. Our concepts of nature are neither fixed nor independent of nature: nature and concepts of nature co-evolve — which speaks to Gregory Bateson's views of the inescapable relationship between nature and culture.

Abstract:
Abstract A transient gas-solid model based on CPFD Software’s Barracuda Virtual Reactor was developed for a feed system to a pilot-scale pressurized oxy-coal (POC) reactor. A simplified geometry with a vertical coal hopper feeding into a 0.635-cm diameter horizontal pipe was used to represent key elements of the feed system. Coal particles were transported with 20-atm CO2 gas. The feed system was required to maintain a steady flow of gas and solids at a coal flow rate of approximately 3.8 g/s and a CO2 to coal mass ratio in the range 1–2. Sensitivity of model results to mesh size and particle interaction sub-model settings was assessed. Two design concepts were evaluated. A gravity-fed concept was found to be infeasible due to inadequate coal flow rates even at very high CO2 to coal flow ratios. This was due to gravitational forces being insufficient to move the pressurized coal from the hopper into the CO2 stream at the desired rate. A fluidized bed concept was found to provide the desired coal flow rate and CO2 to coal flow ratio. CO2 injected at the hopper base first fluidized the vertical coal bed before transporting it through a horizontal exit pipe. A second CO2 inlet downstream of the hopper exit pipe was used to dilute the fluidized coal and increase pipe velocities to minimize coal drop out. The amount of coal transported from the hopper was dependent on the net CO2 hopper flow but independent of the CO2 dilution flow. This meant that the coal flow rate and CO2 to coal flow ratio could be controlled independently. Pipe exit coal flow rates were found to fluctuate at levels acceptable for steady burner operation.
