Abstract:
AbstractIntroduction: Many patients in the United Kingdom having radiotherapy for breast cancer are recommended not to use a deodorant during treatment. The advice is not evidence based, it is solely thought as deodorants contained metals, which would react with radiation and cause an increased skin reaction. Hence this research was undertaken to establish whether patients having a course of radiotherapy for breast cancer could use a deodorant as part of their daily routine.Method: The research took place between May 2004 and February 2005. A total of 192 breast cancer patients were recruited. This included breast or chest-wall patients with or without axilla involvement. The study was designed with two groups. Group 1 used no deodorant and Group 2 a specific deodorant. The researcher reviewed patients weekly, assessing skin reactions and recording the researcher and patient's observations. Results: Most patients experienced no reaction or mild erythema and dry desquamation in the axilla. This was observed in both groups. Therefore, findings of this study indicate that future breast cancer patients should be given the choice of using this deodorant.Further recommendations: Test the reliability of the skin assessment form, extend the research to include other patient groups who have their axilla treated, test different deodorants.

Abstract:
The possibility of using simple and available methods for analyzing deodorants/antiperspirants has been studied. The gravimetric method was shown to have acceptable metrological characteristics under repeatability conditions when evaluating antiperspirant activity. A decrease in the number of microorganisms (CFU) on the axilla skin was observed in a rinse test experiment 4 h and 8 h after the application of deodorants/antiperspirants. The microbial population data were inversely proportional to the antiperspirant activity values of the tested compositions. The sweat secretion reducing decreases the amount of nutrients required for microbial development, which makes it possible to use the rinse test to indirectly evaluate deodorant activity in research and development of personal care products. However, due to its laboriousness and the need for volunteers, the method cannot be recommended for large-scale testing. It was shown that the disc diffusion method (DDM) used to detect Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis cannot be applied to the assessment of the intrinsic antimicrobial activity of the tested cosmetic compositions. This indicates the necessity of additional studies to select test microorganisms typical for the armpit area. In addition, DDM is useful if the deodorant effect of the composition is created by the addition of low-volatile antibacterial compounds. Therefore, microbiological methods have limited applications and are not suitable for widespread use. deodorant action; antiperspirant action, gravimetry, disc diffusion method, rinse test; deodorant; antiperspirant; cosmetic; efficiency; consumer properties, functional properties This work was supported by MUCTR (project no. Abstract:
Deodorants are substances formulated for the purpose of eliminating armpit odor but not perspiration. They typically consist of alcohol. When applied, they make the skin acidic, preventing the proliferation of bacteria. This study was carried out with the aim of evaluating the effects of deodorant on microflora of the armpit. The study lasted for one month which was divided into two phases; Phase one consist of two weeks without deodorant usage and phase two consist of two weeks of deodorant usage. Axillae swabs were collected from 20 female students of the University of Benin. Samples were cultured and incubated at 37 °C both aerobically and anaerobically for 24 - 48 hours on Chocolate, Blood and MacConkey agars. The brand of deodorant used was 'Bouquet Deodorant'. Antibiotic susceptibility test was done on nutrient agar using the disc diffusion method of Bauer and Kirby. The isolates identified consist of Staphylococcus albus which was the predominant organism and accounted for 52.4 % and 50 % of the bacteria isolates for the first and second weeks respectively. Other bacteria isolated include Staphylococcus aureus (42.9 % and 46.1 %) and Klebsiella spp. (4.7 % and 3.9 %) respectively for the successive two weeks. All the isolates showed some degree of susceptibility to impenem, gentamycin, ofloxacin, erythromycin, cloxacilin, amoxilillin and clavulanate. Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella showed some degree of susceptibility to cefuroxime while Staphylococcus albus was resistant. All the isolated showed some degree of susceptibility to ciprofloxicin while Staphylococcus aureus was resistant. The axillary microflora, predominantly Gram-positive cocci showed a sustained reduction during two weeks usage of deodorant and Gram-negative bacteria were, in general, eliminated.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Development of eco-friendly polymer foams is an urgent research topic because of the serious environmental pollution caused by trash heaps and the time-release of harmful gases. Polymer PVC foam using azodicarbonamide as a chemical foaming agent has been highly requested for further improvement due to the residual ammonia gas that continuously leaks out. Here, we demonstrate an effective and costless process for the reduction of releasing ammonia from PVC foams using the overcoat technology of deodorants. We have selected four candidate materials, gelite, zeolite, terra alba, and fumed silica as original materials for the deodorant of ammonia, and they showed an ammonia deodorization rate (ADR) of over 80% without any treatment except the fumed silica. When we over-coated the UV-curing agent mixed deodorants on the PVC foams (thickness ~300 µm), the ADR of the terra alba and zeolite complex foams was remarkably higher than 90%, however, the specific gravity and chromaticity were not changed within 20%. This indicates that our developed process using deodorant layer for ammonia reduction has a high potential for the production of eco-friendly polymer foams.

Abstract:
An ever expanding body of research investigates the human microbiome in general and the skin microbiome in particular. Microbiomes vary greatly from individual to individual. Understanding the factors that account for this variation, however, has proven challenging, with many studies able to account statistically for just a small proportion of the inter-individual variation in the abundance, species richness or composition of bacteria. The human armpit has long been noted to host a high biomass bacterial community, and recent studies have highlighted substantial inter-individual variation in armpit bacteria, even relative to variation among individuals for other body habitats. One obvious potential explanation for this variation has to do with the use of personal hygiene products, particularly deodorants and antiperspirants. Here we experimentally manipulate product use to examine the abundance, species richness, and composition of bacterial communities that recolonize the armpits of people with different product use habits. In doing so, we find that when deodorant and antiperspirant use were stopped, culturable bacterial density increased and approached that found on individuals who regularly do not use any product. In addition, when antiperspirants were subsequently applied, bacterial density dramatically declined. These culture-based results are in line with sequence-based comparisons of the effects of long-term product use on bacterial species richness and composition. Sequence-based analyses suggested that individuals who habitually use antiperspirant tended to have a greater richness of bacterial OTUs in their armpits than those who use deodorant. In addition, individuals who used antiperspirants or deodorants long-term, but who stopped using product for two or more days as part of this study, had armpit communities dominated by Staphylococcaceae, whereas those of individuals in our study who habitually used no products were dominated byCorynebacterium. Collectively these results suggest a strong effect of product use on the bacterial composition of armpits. Although stopping the use of deodorant and antiperspirant similarly favors presence of Staphylococcaceae overCorynebacterium, their differential modes of action exert strikingly different effects on the richness of other bacteria living in armpit communities.

Abstract:
A deodorant is a substance applied to the body to prevent body odor caused by the bacterial breakdown of perspiration in armpits, feet, and other areas of the body. A subgroup of deodorants, antiperspirants, affect odor as well as prevent sweating by affecting sweat glands. Deodorants are classified and regulated as cosmetics by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are designed to eliminate odor. Deodorants are often alcohol-based. Alcohol initially stimulates sweating, but may also temporarily kill bacteria.

Abstract:
Deodorants are cosmetic products that are consumed by people regularly and globally. In this thesis, the opportunities to develop a deodorant for the Swedish cosmetics brand IDUN Minerals AB is investigated. The deodorant market in Swedish pharmacies, deodorant formulation and deodorant packaging are studied. Furthermore, controversial ingredients, such as synthetic aluminum compounds, are explored. The scientific aspects of using synthetic aluminum compounds, which are used as antiperspirant in deodorants, are investigated. There is a general fear that they may increasethe risk of developing breast cancer. However, after a full review of exciting scientific evidence, it is clear that there is currently no study that can prove or disprove the suspicions. The use of aluminum-based antiperspirants therefore continues to be a controversial topic. The conclusion of this thesis is that there is a market opening for IDUN Minerals, especially since they aim for a synthetic aluminum-free, unperfumed and preservative-free deodorant. Furthermore, it is concluded that a Nordic Swan Ecolabel would make their product uniquein its product category. Lastly, it is determined that traditional plastic packaging is more accessible and possesses many favorable properties, but that bioplastics should be further researched.<br>Deodoranter är kosmetiska produkter som dagligen används av människor världen över.

Allen, Caroline. "The artificially scented ape : investigating the role of fragrances and body odours in human interactions." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/22599.

Full text
Abstract:
It was long believed that humans were unable to utilise the odours of conspecifics to co-ordinate social interactions in ways in which other species appear to be capable. However, a surge in interest in human social olfaction has recently challenged this view. The numerous studies conducted in this area have found that multiple state and trait related cues can be detected in body odour. Furthermore, many studies indicate that women are often more sensitive to these cues, and that sensitivity can be associated with fertility, findings that are consistent with sex differences in reproductive effort and benefits of choosiness in mate-searching. Since previous studies in this area have usually addressed the potential for humans to use olfactory communication in a comparable manner to other mammals, they typically involve collection and assessment of ‘natural’ odour. That is, they explicitly exclude the possibility of ‘contamination’ of odour samples by artificial fragrances. However, humans have used artificial fragrances for millennia, across many different cultures. This raises the question of whether widespread fragrance use may affect or disrupt the detection of this information in modern humans. The first aim of this thesis was to address this question by investigating how fragrance use may mediate the detection of olfactory information in humans. As well as providing further evidence for sex differences in the assessment of olfactory cues, and for the role of olfaction in real world partner choice, the findings herein suggest that fragrance may act differently on different information being assessed, potentially masking accurate assessment of certain traits (such as masculinity), while fragrance choice and preferences may be important in complementing other olfactory information (such as the general distinguishability of an individuals’ odour profile). A second aim of the thesis was to develop a scale in order to more accurately describe the varying perceptual qualities of human body odour – in other words to map human body odours. This work was conducted alongside perfumers in order to benefit from their expertise in olfactory perception and semantic labelling of odours. The development of such a scale could enable improved understanding of the perceptual qualities of human odour, making it possible to link specific perceptual qualities to specific cues (e.g. symmetry, masculinity, sex) or to manipulate odours based on perceptual qualities in experimental settings, and has direct practical implications for fragrance designers and for improving the ability of individuals to choose fragrance products that suit their odour profile. The second section of the thesis focuses on the effects of odours on the individual wearer as well as on perceivers in the environment. One study is presented which investigates the role of malodour reduction compared to the addition of fragrances in perceptions of confidence and attractiveness, finding that both the reduction of malodour and the addition of fragrance appear to be important for confidence as rated by others in the environment. The final study presented in the thesis examines a hitherto un-investigated role of olfaction during human pregnancy. The rationale for the study is based on evidence suggesting that in certain non-human species, which also show bi-parental care of offspring, there may be a role for chemical, or odour based, communication which underpins behavioural and endocrinological changes related to infant care behaviours in males. The study found little evidence to support the presence of analogous olfactory signalling during human pregnancy, though the findings are discussed in light of methodological changes which, if made in future studies, may result in different outcomes. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the importance of continuing to investigate various forms of olfactory communication, as well as improving our understanding of odours through the mapping of their perceptual qualities, and finally further examining the ways in which various fragranced products, which are widely used in society, may affect all of this. Future directions for this area of research are discussed. This line of investigation will, I argue, enable us to finally establish the true role of olfaction in contemporary social environments.
