Morbidity following hip and knee arthroplasty has previously been poorly recorded. This is the first time the Post-Operative Morbidity Survey (POMS) has been used for this purpose. The most common types of morbidity following hip and knee arthroplasty are infection and renal morbidity. Pulmonary, pain and gastro-intestinal morbidity are less common. Cardiovascular, wound, neurological and haematological morbidity are least common. Many arthroplasty pa

Effectiveness was expressed in quality adjusted life years gained. Cost data were compiled and verified from either hospital cost data or from Medicare

Abstract:
Over the past 50 years, the demographics of medical school graduates in the United States has changed dramatically with the number of women (47%) almost equaling the number of men in 2014 (AAMC, 2014). However, the Association of American Medical Colleges (2014) reports that orthopaedic surgery has the lowest proportion of female residents, instructors, assistants, associate, and full professors of all the sub-specialties and little has changed in the past several decades. Due to the healthcare reform and the changing needs of our society, it is importance to recruit, retain, and promote wome

Abstract:
This thesis describes the design and control of snake like concentric tube robots for the purposes of minimally invasive, orthopaedic arthroscopic procedures, although similarities can be drawn in multiple surgical contexts. It analyses multiple aspects of delivering the technology, including different forms of robot hardware, the role of robots in surgery and different control modalities including gesture recognition. A prototype tube robot developed by the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision is tested and end user feedback provided to further refine its development.
