Dreimane, Jana. "The Genesis and Development of Children’s Libraries in the Independent Republic of Latvia (1918−1940)." Knygotyra 76 (July 5, 2021): 135–65. http://dx.doi.org/10.15388/knygotyra.2021.76.79.

Full text
Abstract:
The article is dedicated to one of the “blank pages” in the historiography of Latvian libraries − the beginnings of children’s departments in public libraries and independent children’s libraries, from the idea, its implementation and the first twenty years of operation in the independent Republic of Latvia (1918−1940). As there are no academic or popular publications on this topic, the so-called historical method is used in the research, which allows the reconstruction of the emergence and development of Children’s departments in public libraries and children’s libraries in the context of the library sector’s development in Europe and the United States. The main base of the research: press articles and books of the respective period, as well as documents in the National Archives of Latvia on the children’s departments of Rīga public libraries.
The study shows that the ideological justification for free children’s libraries in Latvia was the same as in Russia and Sweden: the public’s desire to protect children and young people from the harmful effects of “pulp” literature (at that time even the term “dirty” literature was used) and to offer them “good” books instead. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, Latvia lacked the main precondition – a network of free public libraries, within which children’s departments in public libraries or independent children’s libraries could be organised. The first children’s department in a public library was only opened in December 1919 in Liepāja (the largest city in Latvia’s Kurzeme region), thanks to the enthusiasm of publicist and politician, library manager Voldemārs Caune and his conviction of the need for such a service. Until the Soviet occupation, it was the only children’s department at a public library in the province.
The situation in the capital Rīga was different. Here, the first children’s department aimed at reducing the “book famine” was established by the State Library of Latvia in February 1922, but soon other organisations became involved in the provision of library services to the younger generation. During the first period of independence of the Republic of Latvia, ten Children’s departments were opened in the public library system and at least ten more children’s libraries were opened by charity organisations in different city districts. The encouragement of Caune and like-minded enthusiasts, mostly members of the Latvian Social Democratic Workers’ Party (Hermanis Kaupiņš, Teodors Līventāls, Emma Kalniņa, etc.) also played an important role in their establishment, as did the municipality’s readiness to provide the necessary financial support.
Although the Liepāja and Rīga children’s libraries were used very actively, insufficient state and local government funding for libraries hindered the establishment of special library services for children in the rest of Latvia. Thus, until the Soviet occupation in 1940, a network of children’s departments at public libraries and children’s libraries was created only in Rīga. The Soviet occupation saw a new phase in the development of children’s library services, as the establishment of children’s departments at public libraries or separate children’s libraries became mandatory throughout Latvia.

Abstract:
The subject of this research is activity of the section of history and everyday life of the State Russian Museum established in 1918. The department devised a new theme – history of everyday life and its visualization in museum expositions, which was natural development of the Russian historical science. Intended to preserve and actualize the history of everyday life of different social classes, it shared fate of multiple national museums of everyday life: exhibitions that tool place in the 1920s were cancelled; in the late 1930s, the collections were transferred to museums of different categories, such as the State Museum of Revolution, the State Museum of Ethnography of the Peoples of the USSR. However, the section of history and everyday life did not cease to exist, and in 1941 merged into the State Hermitage Museum as an independent structural department of the history of Russian culture. Leaning on the new archival sources, an attempt was made to elucidate the work of the department of history and everyday life along with its branches in conditions of difficult political situation in the country during the 1920s – 1930s. Initially, the primary task of the department consisted procurement of the funds with the items from nationalized manor houses; later in consisted in exposition of the collection; and then due to the absence of the unified state institution for regulation of questions of preservation of historical and cultural heritage, the activity was focused on preventing scattering of the collections. After the First Museum Congress in 1930, the museums were recognized as the means of political-educational propaganda, which let to countrywide stagnation of expositional and exhibition activity of the museums. The museums of history and everyday life, being the mixed type museums, were incapable of resisting new realities, and thus re-specialized into museums of history and art or liquidated completely.

Abstract:
Objective: During the interwar period, the healthcare system in Europe experienced a dramatic transformation. It was perceived that preventive medicine was no less important than curative medicine. Moreover, without proper prevention of the so-called social diseases, all later therapeutic measures were expensive and ineffective. The former battle against the consequences was replaced by measures targeting the causes. The fight against social diseases involved a state-owned strategy and a broad arsenal of measures. The University’s scholars also took part in this process. Our study revealed that the significance of the disease prevention in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Stephen Bathory was well understood. Moreover, the treatment was not segregated from hygiene as strictly as it is today. Many hygienists as well as clinicians contributed to the development of preventive mechanisms. The broad specialization of doctors enabled them to see not only biomedical, but also social and economic aspects of a disease. Hygienists and doctors encouraged cooperation and coordination of their activities with the central and local authorities as well as education of the local population. The progress of medical science in Europe and the World, as well as the Soviet ideology in Eastern Europe distracted doctors from the search for the etiology of social illness. Biomedical treatment had become much more effective, and the development of social hygiene research in Eastern Europe had experienced stagnation. For ideological reasons the disease etiology in the Soviet bloc could not be associated with social factors. Social hygiene in the Soviet Union was highly politicized; it could only be interpreted in a frame of Soviet models. The healthcare system that had been created in the Soviet Union was named as the best in the world. The actual medical statistics were concealed from the public, since their logical interpretation could reveal the social causes of illnesses and the disadvantages of the soviet system. Sometimes we must return to basic ideas to improve current public health mechanisms. It is worth reconsidering fundamental questions, i.e. what public health is and how to achieve it. The breadth of the approach of the interwar Vilnius hygienists and doctors, the sensitivity to the social origins of diseases and persistence in combating them by all possible means could serve as an example for today’s doctors. At that time, hygienists approached the idea that the highest goal of prevention was to create a healthy environment, healthy living and working conditions. Although today we live in a much safer environment than those individuals did, new threats are emerging because of changing technology and lifestyle. The broad approach of physicians remains equally important in order not only to combat individual precedents, but also to overcome the preconditions for emerging precedents. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to reveal the theoretical patterns of hygiene and public health established by the hygienists of the Vilnius Hygiene Department as well as the attempts to apply them in practice. Methods: The study was conducted by analyzing the primary and secondary historical sources using the comparative method. A lot of data from the Lietuvos Centrinis Valstybės Archyvas (Lithuanian Central State Archives) that had been used in this research were published for the first time. According to the original archival data, an analysis of the scientific publications of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Stephen Bathory was made to find out the priorities of the research carried out at that time. Conclusions: The complicated economic conditions, the lack of support from the local and central government as well as the imperfections in health legislation of that time hindered the full implementation of the hygienist strategies of the University of Stephen Bathory. However, the activities of the Department of Hygiene of Stephen Bathory University had a significant impact on the development of hygiene science as well as medical practice in the Vilnius region during the Interwar period (1919–1939).

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose Health care requirements and perception of people with differences of sex development (DSD) have changed enormously since the “Chicago Consensus Conference” in 2005. Therefore, new standards of care and evaluation of care have to be developed. Methods We summarize the social and legal approach to care for DSD during the last two decades and report the main results of European research activities. Results The last two decades were accompanied by legal and societal discussion regarding how to deal with a nonbinary concept of sex. This leads to the necessity to assess health care requirements for individuals with DSD in an objective manner. We briefly review the results of the recently funded European research projects dealing with health-related issues in DSD like EU COST Action DSD, I-DSD, and dsd-LIFE, and address the compilation of quality indicators that will be needed to benchmark health care provision and health care-related outcomes. Conclusions The benchmarking process has to be implemented among health care providers for individuals with DSD within the European Reference Networks for Rare Conditions.

Abstract:
Disorders of sexual development (DSD) refer to cases in which there is a discordance among at least two of the following; genetic sex, gonadal sex, genital tract sex and phenotypic sex. DSDs are quite rare with reported incidence varying from 1 in 4,500 to 1 in 5,500. Ovotesticular disorder is amongst the rarest variety of DSD comprising only to 3-10% of all cases of DSD with only 500 cases reported till now worldwide. Frequency of MRKH syndrome is 1 in 4,500 cases and is the cause of amenorrhoea in 15% of cases of primary amenorrhoea. Authors present a case series of seven cases of DSDs with three cases diagnosed as androgen insensitivity syndrome, two cases of true ovotesticular DSD (true hermaphrodite), one case each of mixed gonadal dysgenesis and Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster Hauser (MRKH) syndrome. Authors received the histopathology specimen of these cases in this department which was extensively sampled to study the gonads and the other derivatives of Mullerian and Wolffian duct and to rule out presence of any malignancy.

Abstract:
Objective. In the process of care for disorders of sex development (DSD), clinical decisions should focus on the long-term quality of life (QOL). We sought to investigate the QOL of patients with DSD in China.Design. Case-control study was carried out.Patients.90 patients of DSD participated in the study. Finally, 87 patients were analyzed including Turner’s syndrome (23), Noonan syndrome (2), androgen insensitivity syndrome (22), testicular regression syndrome (2), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (16), and pure gonadal dysgenesis (22).Measurements. The WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was chosen for the present investigation. Four domain scores were analyzed independently including physical, psychological, and social relationship and environmental domains.Results. The average age of the DSD group is 22.34 ± 4.97 years, and only 13.79% patients ever had sexual life. The scores of psychological and environmental domains were lower than that of the physical and social relationship domains, but the difference was not significant (P>0.05). Compared with the Chinese urban population, the QOL scores of DSD patients in China were not significantly lower.Conclusions. With proper treatment, including the follow-up and psychological support, the QOL of DSD patients cannot be significantly reduced. For DSD patients, more attention should be paid to the potential psychological and sexual problems.

AbstractWe introduce the concept of social sustainability, intertwined with ecological and economic aspects, to the field of service robots and comparable automation technology. It takes a first step towards a comprehensive guideline that operationalizes and applies social sustainability. By applying this guideline to the project MURMEL we offer a concept that collects and rates social key issues to visualize their individual importance. Social sustainability is an important and often overlooked aspect of sustainable technology development which should be considered in the early development phase.

Abstract:
On July 29, 2019, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) issued Memorandum Circular 2019-121 (DILG MC 2019-121), ordering the local chief executives to clear roads, sidewalks, and rights-of-way of obstructions. The descriptive-comparative research design was used to describe the economic and social implications of their relocation. A validated and reliability-tested survey questionnaire was used to gather data from 197 displaced vendors peddling in the downtown of a highly urbanized city. The findings of the study showed that the relocation of the displaced vendors did not change their economic conditions in terms of their average monthly sales, expenses, and income, but significantly differ when grouped and compared according to their age, educational attainment, family size, years of vending, and types of merchandise. Likewise, their social well-being did not change in terms of education and health and significantly differ when grouped and compared according to the aforementioned variables. Moreover, the major challenges faced by the relocated vendors were as follows: their means of livelihood is very difficult; not enough financial support is given during their relocation; limited space/trading site; and lack of access to the credit facility. The local government may utilize the study to implement a transit-oriented development of these vendors.

Abstract:
Variables that impact gender development in humans are difficult to evaluate. This difficulty exists because it is not usually possible to tease apart biological influences on gender from social variables. People with disorders of sex development, or DSD, provide important opportunities to study gender within individuals for whom biologic components of sex can be discordant with social components of gender. While most studies of gender development in people with 46,XY DSD have historically emphasized the importance of genes and hormones on gender identity and gender role, more recent evidence for a significant role for socialization exists and is considered here. For example, the influence of parents’ perceptions of, and reactions to, DSD are considered. Additionally, the impact of treatments for DSD such as receiving gonadal surgeries or genitoplasty to reduce genital ambiguity on the psychological development of people with 46,XY DSD is presented. Finally, the role of multi-disciplinary care including access to peer support for advancing medical, surgical and psychosexual outcomes of children and adults with 46,XY DSD, regardless of sex of rearing, is discussed.

Abstract:
This article addressed the relationship between students’ self-disclosure—that is, sharing social and positive information—and writing development in the English language classroom. The pre-test-post-test research design was adopted to assess whether students’ reflections on personal positive experiences including feelings and opinions help improve their writing output as measured by complexity, accuracy, and fluency. The participants, drawn from a convenience sample, were 15 Moroccan students enrolled in the department of English studies at a Moroccan university. These participants were included to establish a homogenous level of English proficiency in writing. The participants completed a pre-test, six positive self-disclosure topics, and a post-test. A paired-sample t-test was computed to determine if a significant mean difference existed between the pre- and post-tests. Although the descriptive statistics suggest that the learners showed relative improvement in complex and fluent language, their overall writing development did not reach a statistically significant difference level. Although differing writing prompts and learners’ academic learning experiences influenced the overall findings, this study contributes to the debate about the role of self-disclosure activities in improving certain language components in writing and calls for developing study programs that consider students’ personal lives in language arts classes.

Abstract:
On 19 May 2008, South Africans woke up to the horrifying image of a man engulfed in fire. This man, Ernesto Nhamuave, originally from Mozambique, was one of the 65 or more foreign nationals who would die in the following days in the xenophobic violence that swept Gauteng. By the end of the week, the violence had spread like wildfire throughout the country. This unprecedented violation of the rights of ‘others’ in South Africa bordered on human catastrophe and caught the government, public institutions and individuals by surprise – people did not know how to respond.
This article examines how the University of Cape Town (UCT) reacted to the crisis, and shows that it did so in a manner that suggested that UCT was grappling with appropriate ways of translating its commitment to being an engaged university into concrete action. UCT’s immediate response to the xenophobia crisis took the form of humanitarian aid designed to mitigate the suffering of thousands of people displaced by the violence. This article specifically focuses on the interventions of SHAWCO, a community development organisation run by students of UCT; the Refugee Rights Project; and the Department of Social Development. These initiatives were nominated by the faculties and student society representatives on the Social Responsiveness Working Group for inclusion in the 2008 Social Responsiveness Report at UCT. Representatives from these units were also represented on the Vice-Chancellor’s Crisis Response Committee.

Abstract:
The risk of a gonadal tumor is high in testicular disorder of sexual development (DSD) with the Y chromosome, but cases of DSD without the Y chromosome are extremely rare. We reported a gonadal tumor in a phenotypically male individual with 46, XX testicular DSD. A testicular tumor was incidentally found in a 32-year-old phenotypic male who was presented to the hospital with male infertility. A diagnosis of 46, XX testicular DSD was made by the presentation of karyotype analysis of 46, XX with the sex-determining region of the Y chromosome (SRY) positive and gonadal tissue without female gonads. Surgery was performed due to a gradually growing tumor. The partial orchidectomy was performed with the diagnosis of a benign Leydig cell tumor in frozen biopsy.

Abstract:
Bangladesh economy has been transforming towards a market-based economy from a state-dominated centrally planned economy since the early 1980s, the pace of transformation has been slow though. The aim of this article is to see how the higher education system responds to the changes in the structure of the economy. The article argues that the higher education system in general in a transitional economy is responsive to the changes in the structure of the economy. The article, however, also argues that the changes in higher education system, especially in curriculum, would not follow a linear unidirectional trajectory. This article is built on a small-scope empirical study on three selected social science disciplines of Dhaka University to see whether and how they responded to the demand of the growing labour market in terms of changes they introduced in curriculum in the last 20 years. Having analyzed skill and knowledge demand by the banking and telecommunication sectors—the two major sources of private sector employment for educated workforce in recent years—the article makes an effort to track what kind of changes the three selected disciplines under the Faculty of Social Science of Dhaka University have made in their respective curriculum in response to the demand of the major private sector employers. The article finds that Public Administration and Economics Departments of the Dhaka University show high and low responsiveness to business sector demand, respectively. While Sociology Department did not respond to business sector demand, rather it has responded to NGO sector demand. Among these three departments, Public Administration is found to have a low degree of compatibility to business sector needs. The article concludes that the Faculty of Social Science of Dhaka University has been slow and hesitant to respond to emerging needs of the dominant business sector employers; it is mainly because of the negative attitude towards private sector in the academia and lack of proper direction of private sector development.

Abstract:
Drawing on primary sources from the Nixon Presidential Materials and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), this article examines HUD's attempts during the Nixon era to implement “pro-integrative” policies and the White House response to these efforts. Specifically, this article provides an explanation for why President Richard Nixon elected to dismantle residential integration initiatives while allowing similar policies in employment and education to proceed with some force. In contrast to existing work arguing that Nixon's civil rights positions were designed to maximize political payoffs, I contend that Nixon's strategies are more accurately characterized as blame avoidance. Whenever possible, Nixon attempted to shift the onus of political responsibility for controversial civil rights decisions onto other political actors. This argument is clarified by a second primary theoretical point, which argues that institutional vulnerability increases the likelihood of presidential attacks. In the case examined here, HUD's distinctive institutional weakness—shaped by its conflicting missions and unwieldy structure, and laid bare by scandals in the Federal Housing Administration—gave the president a relatively low-risk political opportunity to dismantle civil rights efforts, a chance he did not have in the areas of education and employment.

Abstract:
The Far North region has the highest rate of chronic malnutrition (35.9%) ahead of East (35.4%); North (30.6%) and Adamawa (28.7%). The study aimed to identify contextual factors of child malnutrition in line with UNICEF’s causal pattern of malnutrition (2013). This was a qualitative study. Multiple case sampling of social micro-units was used. Focus-groups; face-to-face interviews and observations were organized. Seguin method was used for data analysis (2010). Fifty people participated in the study. Mayo-danay is a landlocked area, where the lack of food processing and food conservation infrastructure promotes early and low-cost liquidation of food products. A situation that exposes families to famine and poverty a few months after the harvest. The influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs); insecurity due to terrorism has weakened cross-border trade. The household size is up to 10 members, that did not allow children to eat at their convenience, and in a diverse way. The Christian head of households did not systematically contribute to the food ration, unlike the Muslims. Fish, agricultural and livestock products are more for sale than for consumption in the household. There are frequent shortages of food supplements for the management of malnutrition in health training. The causes of malnutrition in Mayo-Danay were multifactorial. Strategies to fight against malnutrition must take into account the integrated approach to local and sustainable development.

This study investigates the effect that Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) had on academic performance using a difference-in-differences (DID) estimator using data from the years 2006–2016. By obtaining data from the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, this investigation examines the effect that LEED design had on the Student Performance Index for schools that opened in the year 2012. Each LEED school was matched with a non-LEED school based on several criteria. The study determined that LEED did not have an impact on the Student Performance Index. Though we find no relationship, green schools do provide educational opportunities that standard buildings do not. We suggest that the state of Ohio should take advantage of potentially untapped opportunities in their green schools program that could enhance both social and ecological sustainability.

Abstract:
Background/Aims: Disorders of sex development (DSD) are a heterogeneous group of rare conditions. Evidence-based treatment is challenged by a lack of clinical longitudinal outcome studies. We sought to investigate the quality of life of children with DSD other than congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Methods: The participants (aged 6–18 years) were 23 patients raised as males and 7 patients raised as females. Control data were obtained from representatives of the patients’ siblings matched for age and gender. The Pediatric Quality of Life InventoryTM Version 4.0 (PedsQL) Generic Core Scales were used as the study tool. Results: In comparison with the reference data, the patient group had significantly lower overall PedsQL (p < 0.01) and school functioning (p < 0.01) scores. Also, the total PedsQL score was significantly lower in patients with DSD who were of female social sex as compared to the controls who were females. Family income, surgical procedures, degree of virilization, and mode of puberty did not influence the PedsQL scores. Conclusion: This study revealed a poorer quality of life for patients with DSD as compared to the age-matched control group. This highlights the need for a skilled multidisciplinary team to manage this group of patients.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the critical thinking skills of preservice science teachers in terms of various variables (gender, grade level, academic grade point average, participation in activities) and their opinions. In the research, sequential explanatory design, which is one of the mixed method research designs, was used. The study was carried out with 200 preservice teachers studying at Science Education Department of a state university chosen at Cappadocia region of Turkey. Interviews were conducted with low-level (f=7) and high-level (f=7) preservice teachers selected by means of purposive sampling method from these pre-service teachers participating in the study. Regarding the quantitative and qualitative data obtained; it has been determined that the critical thinking skills of the preservice teachers did not show any significant difference according to gender, grade level and academic grade point average, but there was a significant difference in terms of the activities performed. Preservice teachers expressed that their family structures, social environments in which they interact, and characteristic features were said to be effective in the development of critical thinking skills. Regarding the findings, it has been concluded that trainings that will evoke higher level skills such as critical thinking skills in universities can be effective, but the social and cultural background of the preservice teachers are also effective on these skills. It is recommended to prepare contents that enhance higher level skills such as critical thinking skills as well as education for pedagogy or content knowledge given at universities.

Abstract:
Relevance of the research topic. The transformations of the third millennium, both in the life of the world community and in Ukraine, necessitated the solution of new problems. This intensified the development of scientific work aimed at ensuring the economic growth of the country, environmental and social protection of different segments of the population. The changes did not bypass the higher education system, which led to the emergence and development of new approaches in clarifying the specifics of students' research work during their studies in the university. Scientific and technological progress has contributed to the growing importance of training young, promising scientific staff. Against this background, the educational process of preparing a future teacher - as the fairway of social development - must also include a research component. Purpose and methods of research. The purpose of the article is to prove the importance of social science research work of students of pedagogical institutions of higher education, to outline examples of such activities in Lutsk Pedagogical College. Research methods: studing of educational, methodological and scientific literature on the problem; analysis of reports on work with gifted students of teachers of the Department of Social Disciplines of Lutsk Pedagogical College; observation of the nature and thematic orientation of scientific achievements of members of the student scientific society. Performance and key findings. The value of the research element in the educational process of pedagogical university is revealed in the article. It is found that qualitative training of specialists should be carried out in the context of the implementation of programs that cover the humanities, fundamental and specialty links, and also necessarily implement the research component. It is stated that one of the research centers for students of Lutsk Pedagogical College is a scientific society engaged in the development of humanitarian character. It has been observed that in the last years the directions of search work of the educational recipients - members of the society - are reduced to the following: past and present of an ancestry; the heroics of the participants of the Dignity Revolution, the anti-terrorist operation and the operation of the Joint Forces in Eastern Ukraine; saving local monuments; gender equality; global problems of society.

Abstract:
The article presents an attempt to outline the development of women's and gender studies in Azerbaijan in the context of the formation of interdisciplinarity in the social sciences and humanities and to identify their methodological significance for historical knowledge. It is especially noted that gender studies as a scientific direction were embedded in the general context of epistemological "Westernization". Gender studies in Azerbaijan practically begun in the second half of the 1990s. It should be admitted that, as in many other post-Soviet republics, the aforementioned studies, as well as the study of gender policy, gender education, did not arise spontaneously, being dictated by the internal needs of society and science, but were exported as an integral part of the “big political project”. It is noted that since 1990, the Department of Problems of Modern Philosophy of the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan has been engaged in theoretical analysis and practical application of gender studies. The research interests of Azerbaijani scientists include the study of such issues as gender aspects of socio-economic development, gender quotas and stereotypes, gender factor in politics, features of state policy on women, empowerment of women, etc. Such unfavorable factors as the absence of the feminist movement as a social base for such investigations, the dominance of patriarchal attitudes and the embryonic state of feminist reaction, as well as the tendency of “modernization of patriarchal consciousness” and others are mentioned as adverse social reasons. At the end of the article, separate tasks are formulated that face the nascent gender history of Azerbaijan.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Older adults are among the most frequent of health service users and often require physiotherapy input. Since the prevalence of dementia rises with age, physiotherapists regularly treat older adults with dementia in the acute setting. However advancing competence in the area of dementia care represents a significant cultural shift for the physiotherapy profession. Dementia education which specifically addresses both the learning needs of physiotherapists and the cultural context in which they work may be the first step to advancing competence and enabling best practice. Methods A learning needs analysis was conducted within a physiotherapy department in an acute, level three hospital. An educational programme was subsequently designed and delivered over six weeks. The programme aimed to equip physiotherapists with both the knowledge and skills to best support the person with dementia in the acute care setting. Careful consideration was given to the social construct of dementia, inclusion of the voice of the person with dementia and the historical barriers experienced when accessing therapy services in the acute care environment. Results The perceived benefit of the education programme was evaluated by means of a participant survey. 100% of respondents felt that undergraduate training did not sufficiently prepare them to work with adults with dementia. As a result of the educational programme, 100% of participants reported increased competence when treating adults with dementia and a subsequent positive impact on physiotherapy practice. 88% of respondents agreed that ongoing professional development in this area of dementia care would be beneficial and 100% reported that they would recommend the educational programme to a colleague. Conclusion The changing landscape of healthcare delivery has opened up new ways of working. Physiotherapists are in a unique position to support the person with dementia in the acute care setting. Participants of this educational programme demonstrated high motivation to advance their knowledge and skills in the area of person-centred dementia care.

Abstract:
Foreign aid has been the subject of much examination and research ever since it entered the economic armamentarium approximately 45 years ago. This was the time when the Second World War had successfully ended for the Allies in the defeat of Germany and Japan. However, a new enemy, the Soviet Union, had materialized at the end of the conflict. To counter the threat from the East, the United States undertook the implementation of the Marshal Plan, which was extremely successful in rebuilding and revitalizing a shattered Western Europe. Aid had made its impact. The book under review is by three well-known economists and is the outcome of a study sponsored by the Department of State and the United States Agency for International Development. The major objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of assistance, i.e., aid, on economic development. This evaluation however, was to be based on the existing literature on the subject. The book has five major parts: Part One deals with development thought and development assistance; Part Two looks at the relationship between donors and recipients; Part Three evaluates the use of aid by sector; Part Four presents country case-studies; and Part Five synthesizes the lessons from development assistance. Part One of the book is very informative in that it summarises very concisely the theoretical underpinnings of the aid process. In the beginning, aid was thought to be the answer to underdevelopment which could be achieved by a transfer of capital from the rich to the poor. This approach, however, did not succeed as it was simplistic. Capital transfers were not sufficient in themselves to bring about development, as research in this area came to reveal. The development process is a complicated one, with inputs from all sectors of the economy. Thus, it came to be recognized that factors such as low literacy rates, poor health facilities, and lack of social infrastructure are also responsible for economic backwardness. Part One of the book, therefore, sums up appropriately the various trends in development thought. This is important because the book deals primarily with the issue of the effectiveness of aid as a catalyst to further economic development.

: This research aimed to explore the characteristics of the teachers who make a difference along with the activities they did, the actions they took and the contributions they made to society. Having a qualitative research design, this research utilized a phenomenological design. The working group of the research consisted of 12 volunteer teachers who completed their master degree at the department of Educational Sciences in Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University during the 2018-2019 academic year and who had teaching experience. The research employed semi-structured interview form prepared by the researchers. Content analysis was used during data analysis. The teachers making a difference were found to differ from their colleagues with these characteristics such as taking responsibility in the solution of the social problems, producing practical solutions to problems, being open to criticism, having a unique personality. The teachers were determined to make a difference by doing social activities, solving social problems, guiding the society and bringing innovation. Besides, they demonstrated some behaviours like breaking out of the routine and not following the procedures. Various recommendations were provided in order to raise teachers who make a difference. Formal procedures should be reduced and free/democratic environment should be created during in-service training, while teachers should be specifically selected for the profession and faculty members should be role models during pre-service training. The teachers who make a difference contributed to the social integrity, development, meeting the needs of the society, bringing individuals into society and making individuals gain values.

Abstract:
Subject area Sustainable development; business, government, and society. Study level/applicability The case is designed to be taught to students at MBA and MA level. Case overview In February 2009, Justin Smith, manager of the good business journey at Woolworths, a leading South African department store, was a worried man. Woolworths had launched its five-year sustainability strategy just under two years before. After undertaking an impact assessment, Smith was concerned that the original targets – which covered transformation, social development, the environment and climate change – had been set without a clear understanding of exactly what it would take to achieve them. Woolworths had recently identified ten key risk areas that impacted on the achievement of its original goals. If the sustainability goals were not reached, Woolworths could lose credibility among its shareholders, staff, and consumers. What did Woolworths need to do to ensure that it achieved its sustainability goals? And had the company been too ambitious in the targets it had set initially, he wondered? Expected learning outcomes To examine the differences, if any, between sustainable development in South Africa and other developing nations and sustainable development in developed nations; to impart an understanding of sustainability in its broadest sense; to investigate the challenges in implementing sustainability strategies in business; to look at ways of measuring the success of sustainability strategies; and to explore whether and how sustainability strategies should differ across industry sectors and across companies. AbstractThe paper presents a systematic literature review investigating definitions, uses, and application of data-driven design in the concept development process. The analysis shows a predominance of the use of text mining techniques on social media and online reviews to identify customers’ needs, not exploiting the opportunity granted by the increased accessibility of IoT in cyber-physical systems. The paper argues that such a gap limits the potential of capturing tacit customers’ needs and highlights the need to proactively plan and design for a transition toward data-driven design.

Abstract:
The risk of gonadal germ cell tumors is increased over the lifetime of patients with XY-disorders of sex development (XY-DSD). The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical features and histopathological outcome after gonadectomy in patients with XY-DSD to assess the risk of malignant transformation to gonadal germ cell tumors. Thirty-five women treated for XY-DSD at our hospital between 2003 and 2020 were enrolled in this study. Twenty-seven (77%) underwent prophylactic gonadectomy, 10 (29%) at our department and 17 (48%) at external hospitals. Eight (23%) patients didn’t receive gonadectomy. Of the patients who underwent a surgical procedure at our hospital, two patients were diagnosed with a unilateral seminoma, one patient with a bilateral and one patient with a unilateral Sertoli cell adenoma. According to these findings, preventive gonadectomy in patients with XY-DSD should be taken into consideration. Guidelines concerning the necessity of gonadectomy to avoid malignant transformation are still lacking. The risk of malignant germ cell tumors from rudimentary gonads has not been investigated sufficiently to date, as it is mostly based on case series due to the rarity of the condition. In our study we retrospectively analyzed patients who partly underwent bilateral gonadectomy, aiming to fill this gap. Concerning the ideal point of time for gonadectomy, further studies with a higher number of patients are needed.

AbstractFrom different sides, there is a call for better psychosocial care and counselling in the field of diverse sex development (dsd). However, studies on the specific demands, deficits and needed improvements regarding those services are rare. This exploratory online study aimed at investigating counselling experiences and the ideas that different groups of participants have concerning the localisation of counselling structures and improving care. Quantitative and qualitative data (N = 630) were analysed within a mixed methods framework. The participants included experts of experience resp. patients with different intersex/dsd conditions (n = 40), parents of children with dsd (n = 27), professional psychosocial counsellors (n = 321) and experts in the field including medical practitioners, psychologists, natural and social scientists as well as others involved, e.g., students or relatives (n = 56). The results show a gap between receiving psychosocial and medical care in the group of adult lived-experience experts, who had received less psychosocial care than medical interventions. The findings also reveal important tasks of psychosocial care. A focus was set on parental experiences. Helpful aspects reported were talking with other parents of children with intersex/dsd, aspects missed were assistance in supporting the individual development of their children. The majority of all participants (58%) held the view that, apart from multidisciplinary competence centres, there also have to be easily accessible counselling services which offer support in everyday life. The participants named increasing quality and quantity as necessary improvements in counselling structures for children and adults with intersex/dsd and their families. Implications are drawn for the specific tasks and target groups of psychosocial care and needed research in intersex healthcare over life span.

Abstract:
Abstract Carl Dawson's development as a sociologist reflected a general trend in sociology's evolution out of theology and social work. Trained as a minister, Dawson rejected the religious vocation at some point after World War I to become a social scientist. Appointed to McGill in 1922, he strove to establish research as the foundation for understanding society, questioning the efficacy of social reform. His convictions stemmed from his Maritime Baptist background, wartime experience and education at the University of Chicago. In 1914, Dawson left the Maritime region where he had been born and raised to attend the divinity school of the University of Chicago. In so doing, he was following a well travelled route: poor economic conditions drove numerous people out of the Maritime provinces between 1910 and 1929, and the lack of doctoral programmes in Canada compelled many students to attend American graduate schools. With its strong reputation for research, the University of Chicago was a popular choice. Its divinity school, a Baptist stronghold, was attractive to adherents of that faith. That a number of its faculty members were Canadians also attested to the institutional ties that had long linked Baptists in Canada and the northern United States. In 1918, Dawson recessed from graduate studies for war service and resumed his studies in 1919 - his interests now sharply turned towards sociology. This shift was partly influenced by the Chicago divinity school's close ties with the sociology department - a result of the historic link between the social gospel and sociology generally - but was also the product of the school's position as a leader in liberal and radical theological doctrine. The modernists within the institution stressed that all studies of society, including religion, must accord with modern empirical methods. That, in addition to their acceptance of the ideas of John Dewey and the Chicago School regarding social development, led some to the conclusion that religion itself was but a form of group behaviour. In reflecting all those currents of thought, Dawson's Ph.D. thesis, "The Social Nature of Knowledge," hinted at the reasons for his departure from the ministry for a career in social science. Showing that all culture and knowledge, morals and ideals had social origins, Dawson concluded that even fact was not fixed truth but represented the decision of individuals to agree on certain points and issues. This explained why Dawson believed that research - a collection of facts - would aid in understanding society. The thesis was also marked by an opposition to social action, stemming from what Dawson had witnessed during the war and the upheaval which followed, but also, it must be argued, from the antiauthoritarian and antihierarchial strain in the Baptist faith. The fact that Dawson eschewed social action in much the same way as did Harold Innis, another Baptist educated at Chicago, suggests that there exists a tradition in the development of Canadian social science quite different from the one which Brian McKillop has traced in A Disciplined Intelligence, and it was that legacy which Dawson's brand of sociology represented.

Abstract:
Background: Sex chromosomal Disorder of sex development (DSD) is an atypical abnormality of external genitalia which is mismatched with its sex chromosome traits. The condition of children with DSD affects the dynamics in the family. Parents’ reactions after discovering this health problem vary greatly, such as being in a state of shock, confusion, or self-blame. However, parents’ acceptance is extremely important for better quality of caring, to the healthy social and emotional child development, and to make the best decisions regarding gender assignment. Objective: To describe the acceptance process of parents that have children with sex chromosomes mosaicism DSD.Methods: This study used a mixed-method with a sequential explanatory approach, which was preceded by quantitative data collection followed by qualitative. The total respondents consisted of 14 mothers and 12 fathers of 14 sex chromosome mosaicism DSD patients with XX/XY, X/XY, XYY or XXY variants. Quantitative data were collected using the Indonesian version of the Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ), and interviews were conducted to determine the acceptance process. Results: Most acceptance cases were based on the surgical stage completion in which a higher number of mothers (71.43%) than fathers (50%).Conclusion: It is uneasy for parents to accept children with sex chromosome mosaicisms DSD, hence the fathers struggle more than mothers in accepting those affected. To the best of our knowledge this is the first study in Indonesia to help parent understand and accept their child condition.

Abstract:
Introduction: Acute atrial fibrillation (AAF) is the most common arrhythmia managed in the Emergency Department (ED). Direct costs of AAF are primarily attributed to ED visits and subsequent admission to hospital. A better understanding of patients attitudes regarding ED attendance is necessary to develop strategies to improve the patient care experience while simultaneously reducing ED presentation and inappropriate hospital admissions. This study aims to describe patient perspectives on ED use for AAF using in-depth qualitative interviews. Methods: An interview template designed to explore why patients attend the ED for AAF was constructed based on the Theoretical Domains Framework, a theory-informed approach that utilizes 14 domains to describe influencers of behavior. We conducted audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews of patients following their presentation to the ED for management of AAF. Interviews were anonymized, transcribed and imported into NVivo for coding and analysis. Two independent reviewers used a direct approach to code participant statements. Discrepancies were resolved by a third party. Belief statements were generated and relevant domains identified based on high frequency scores, conflicting belief statements or evidence of strong influencing beliefs. Results: 12 patient interviews, mean age 63.1 years, 91.7% male, 75.0% recurrent AAF, were completed. Patients stated that they attended the ED because: 1) symptom severity; 2) they were instructed by physicians to attend the ED should their AAF recur; and 3) they were encouraged by family members to attend. Their primary goal was to have relief of their symptoms. There was no expectation of specialist consultation or admission to hospital. Even though most patients stated they were open to managing these episodes independently, they reported that they did not have the knowledge or tools to do so. Conclusion: Patients with AAF present to the ED because of their symptom burden, social influences (physician and family) and lack of other management options. This study demonstrates the need for development of patient self-management strategies which will empower patients in their disease management and may decrease future ED visits.

Abstract:
ObjectivesFirst, to explore parents’ views on and experiences of managing their febrile child and to assess their behaviour and needs when in search of information about fever; second, to develop and evaluate a hospital discharge information package about fever in children.DesignMixed methods: (A) qualitative study with semistructured interviews and a focus group discussion (FGD) and (B) quantitative survey.SettingEmergency department, non-acute hospital setting and day nursery in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.ParticipantsParents of children <18 years (interviews, n=22) parents of children under 5 years (FGD (n=14), survey (n=38)).InterventionInformation package about fever in children (leaflet and website including videos).Outcome measures quantitative surveyKnowledge of fever and confidence in caring for a febrile child (Likert scale 0–5).ResultsParents found fever mostly alarming, especially high fever. Help-seeking behaviour was based on either specific symptoms or on an undefined intuition. When parents did not feel recognised in their concern or felt criticised, anxiety increased as well as the threshold to seek healthcare for future illnesses. Information was needed, especially for situations when the general practitioner or social network were less easily available. This information should be reliable, consistent, available in multiple formats and include advice on management of fever at home and precise referral to medical services. Parents reported improved knowledge about fever (p<0.05) and mentioned improved confidence in caring for a child with fever at home after consulting the information package.ConclusionParents of children with a fever visiting the hospital are concerned about specific symptoms or based on an undefined intuition. Rather than telling parents that they should manage their child’s illness at home, healthcare professionals should recognise parental intuition and provide clear information on alarming signs and potential diagnoses to empower parents in the management of their febrile child.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Disorders of sex development (DSD) are clinical conditions that cause an incongruity between the chromosomal and phenotypic sex of an individual. A high variable group of congenital disorders can arise depending upon the timing and location of defect involved in sex determination and differentiation. 46, XY DSD occurs in 1:20,0000 male births; with external genitalia ranging from ambiguous to normal female. Such conditions can be psychologically stressful for patients and their families and have been historically difficult to diagnose, especially at genetic level. Failure to diagnose exact mutation may make the therapeutic approach, genetic counseling and risk assessment even more challenging. Clinical case: Full term baby is born to non -consanguineous parents after an uneventful pregnancy. Mother denied any history of acne/hirsutism, hormone or substance use during pregnancy. At birth, external genitalia showed non-rugated labia majora with posterior fusion, absence of labia minora and vaginal opening. Enlarged clitoris/ Penile like structure measuring 1.5 cm with palpable corpora and hypospadias was present. No palpable gonads were appreciated. No other dysmorphic features were present and rest of the physical exam was unremarkable. Cosyntropin stim test on day 4 of life showed appropriate adrenal response. Pelvic ultrasound and MRI showed an elongated structure posterior to the bladder presumably uterus with no identifiable gonads. Chromosome analysis revealed an XY karyotype. FISH for SRY and microarray were unremarkable. Further testing at 4 weeks of life showed sub optimal elevation of Gonadotropins and Testosterone. Female gender was assigned due to parents’ preference and endocrine/ Urology recommendations. The 46,XY DSD genetic panel including testing for non-syndromic DSD, steroid abnormalities, skeletal dysplasia syndromes, and multiple malformation syndromes was unremarkable. Conclusion: Although a number of cytogenetic or single-gene defects have been associated with DSD, the true incidence of pathogenic variants has not been established. Many cases of 46, XY DSD remain unexplained likely due to an unidentified pathogenic variant of genes not routinely included in the panel or not yet identified to be associated with DSD. Without a clear diagnosis, genetic counseling and risk assessment is difficult. Parents should be informed about future options regarding sexual development, hormonal therapy and surgical treatments available. The determination of social sex must be made in consideration of underlying possible etiology, phenotypic sex, ethnic traditions, sexual identity and the acceptance of the assigned social sex by the parents. The affected child and his/her family must be followed throughout life to determine the patient’s adjustment to his/her social sex.

Abstract:
Background/aims This was a pilot study that was part of a Department of Health and Social Care initiative to improve access to cognitive behavioural therapies for patients with long-term health conditions. The service development work involved integrating an ‘Improving Access to Psychological Therapies’ service with a cardiac rehabilitation service, to treat patients with cardiac disease and comorbid anxiety and/or depression. The aim was to reduce levels of anxiety and depression, urgent care visits, inpatient stays and outpatient appointments, and secondary care service usage. Methods A repeated-measures design was implemented using clinical data collected as part of routine practice. A quasi-control group was used for the economic evaluation, comparing patients who entered into therapy with those who did not. Collaboration between an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies and cardiac rehabilitation service identified 222 cardiac patients (142 males; 80 females) with comorbid anxiety and/or depression to access the pathway over 29 months. Patients accessed psychological therapy using the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies stepped-care model, where therapy intensity and durations varied according to patient need and complexity. Psychological outcomes were measured at three time points: assessment; end of contact; and 3-month follow up. Secondary care service usage was measured for 6 months before and after therapy. Results Significant improvements on all psychological outcomes were found when comparing scores between the three time points. Patients with coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction who received Improving Access to Psychological Therapies treatments had decreased use of secondary care hospital services. Conclusions An integrated Improving Access to Psychological Therapies and cardiac rehabilitation service can provide effective, adapted evidence-based psychological treatments for cardiac patients with comorbid anxiety and depression.

Abstract:
Abstract. The U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program Tropical Western Pacific site hosted a C-band polarization (CPOL) radar in Darwin, Australia. It provides 2 decades of tropical rainfall characteristics useful for validating global circulation models. Rainfall retrievals from radar assume characteristics about the droplet size distribution (DSD) that vary significantly. To minimize the uncertainty associated with DSD variability, new radar rainfall techniques use dual polarization and specific attenuation estimates. This study challenges the applicability of several specific attenuation and dual-polarization-based rainfall estimators in tropical settings using a 4-year archive of Darwin disdrometer datasets in conjunction with CPOL observations. This assessment is based on three metrics: statistical uncertainty estimates, principal component analysis (PCA), and comparisons of various retrievals from CPOL data. The PCA shows that the variability in R can be consistently attributed to reflectivity, but dependence on dual-polarization quantities was wavelength dependent for 1<R<10mmh-1. These rates primarily originate from stratiform clouds and weak convection (median drop diameters less than 1.5 mm). The dual-polarization specific differential phase and differential reflectivity increase in usefulness for rainfall estimators in times with R>10mmh-1. Rainfall estimates during these conditions primarily originate from deep convective clouds with median drop diameters greater than 1.5 mm. An uncertainty analysis and intercomparison with CPOL show that a Colorado State University blended technique for tropical oceans, with modified estimators developed from video disdrometer observations, is most appropriate for use in all cases, such as when 1<R<10mmh-1 (stratiform rain) and when R>10mmh-1 (deeper convective rain).

Abstract:
Background: Lately in national and international reports, there has been an increasing interest on the significance of the development of reading skills. Countries are facing the problem of a decrease in reading habits (Niemann, 2016; Iyengar, 2007).

Method: This study examines the perceived use of metacognitive strategies among undergraduate students during reading, which encompasses the use of metacognitive strategies before, during and after reading. The sample group comprised 236 students at Primary Education (PE) and Social Studies Teaching (SST), Language & Literature (LL) and Sociology departments during 2014–2015 academic year. The data were collected using the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI) and reading comprehension achievement tests (informative and narrative).

Results: Overall strategy use among the sample group was “high”. Whether there was a significant difference among students’ perceived use of strategies in reading based on gender, grade, faculty and department was investigated. The results indicated a significant difference based on gender and grade level. Finally, it was found that as the reading comprehension increased in narrative texts, so did the strategy use in overall scale as well as in Global Reading Strategies and Problem Solving Strategies sub-scales.

Conclusion: The findings indicated gender differences in the use of reading strategies. It can be suggested that students be provided with reading strategies training that considers the gender differences in the use of metacognitive strategies in reading. In addition, based on the grade difference between freshmen and senior students, in favor of senior students and arising from including strategy use training in the curriculum, reading and learning strategies training could be provided for students during undergraduate education.

Abstract:
Cerebral palsy (CP) is the leading cause of childhood disability affecting function and development. The objective of the study was to look into the language problems in Bangladeshi children with CP on the basis of neurolinguistic approach and was conducted during the period of April 2014 to December 2014 at the Department of Linguistics, University of Dhaka among children aged between 3 to 18 years. In the study, a total of 10 children with CP were enrolled purposively from two tertiary care hospitals in Dhaka (Children Development Centre of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital and National Institute of Mental Health). The mean±SD age was 8.9±4.8 years. Male was predominant (60.0%). History of prolonged labour was 100%, and home attended by untrained birth attendants in 70.0%. The 90.0% of the children understood simple meaningful sentences using two words. The children were unable to understand complex sentences. The 80.0% children did not want to play or make friendship with other children; 40.0% did not understand others’ speech, 50.0% did not express their own speech, and 10.0% did not understand & express their own speech. All the children had deep thong articulation changed to mono thong in case of semi vowel articulation. In case of history of delayed crying at birth, phoneme omission occurred when the children tried to articulate any word. To the best of knowledge, this was the first study done on the neurolinguistic approach in Bengali children, but the limitation of the study were that it was with small sample size, city based and short duration. Therefore, generalization of the results would be difficult. Further studies using larger sample would be better to visualize the extent of the issue in order to insert the children with CP in their social context and to give them quality of life.Mediscope Vol. 5, No. 1: Jan 2018, Page 22-27

Abstract:
PurposeWe consider what happened in the initial reconstruction interventions following the 6 April 2009 earthquake in L'Aquila (Italy). Using the disaster risk reduction and resilience paradigm, we discuss the cognitive and interactional failures of top-down approaches, and we analyse the main constraints to enacting inclusive social learning and socially-sustainable transformation and building back better more resilient communities in post-disaster reconstruction.Design/methodology/approachOur evidence comes from participant observation, action anthropology and analytic auto-ethnography conducted during the reconstruction phase following the L'Aquila earthquake. Findings were triangulated with document analysis, media analysis and retrospective interviewing conducted in 2013 and 2017.FindingsThe shift from civil defence to civil protection did not bring any advance in disaster management and development practice in terms of DRR and resilience. The militaristic command-and-control approach, which is still in vogue among civil protection systems, means that local political leaders become the civil protection authorities in a disaster area. As in the L'Aquila case, this exacerbates local social and environmental risks and impacts, inhibits local communities from learning and restricts them from participating in post-disaster interventions.Originality/valueMost previous commentary on disaster recovery and reconstruction following the L'Aquila earthquake has focussed on the top-down approach carried out by the national government and the Italian Department of Civil Protection (DCP). This paper is unique in that it sheds light on how the command-and-control approach was also implemented by local authority figures and on how this undermined building back better more resilient communities.

Abstract:
Abstract The New Hampshire Alliance for Healthy Aging is a statewide coalition building partnerships that support and promote healthy aging throughout the state. Through a collective impact approach, six domains (fundamental needs, living arrangements, caregiver support, social and civic engagement, physical and mental wellbeing, and advocacy) were defined to characterize and support the ongoing evaluation of age friendly communities. This poster describes a measurement framework and the development of a strategy to support gathering data across northern New England. A committee of state and national experts has convened to identify the best available indicators and measures for each of the domains and to expose gaps in available data. Representation includes individuals representing the University of New Hampshire, Tri-State Learning Collaborative on Aging (TSLCA), UMass Boston’s Department of Gerontology, and the 100 Million Healthier Lives Initiative (Institute of Healthcare Improvement). Researchers scanned national and state level sources for credibility, consistency, and availability of comparison information. Across the six domains, 43 indicators were selected. 26 did not have available data. Factors measuring social determinants of health are central and especially difficult to quantify, demanding new strategies and data collection approaches. Funding is essential for efforts to define and pilot a new data module to capture a broader set of meaningful data to measure and evaluate age friendly communities. Comprised of grassroots efforts across the fastest aging region of the country, Northern New England, under the Tri-State Learning Collaborative on Aging, is a prime location to use as a pilot project for this module.

Abstract:
Demographic trends, and older people over 65 years disproportionately occupying beds in psychiatric hospitals, pointed to their increasing clinical needs. Clinical work with older people often required different skills from work with younger people. ‘General psychiatrists’, nominally working with adults of all ages, usually had little interest in working with older people. By 1977, it was clear to clinical leaders in the field of psychogeriatrics that official recognition of their specialty by the government was essential to ensure service development. Official recognition would provide the means to collect data to identify gaps in services, to obtain information on the implementation of government guidance and to advocate for resources, including ensuring high quality training posts for doctors wanting to specialise in the field. Doctors have traditionally taken the lead in creating new medical specialties, and psychogeriatrics was no exception. However, support fluctuated towards the specialty from the leadership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Health service leaders who did not undertake work with older people, were incredulous that others wished to do so. Negotiations between the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Department of Health and Social Security about recognising psychogeriatrics were convoluted and prolonged. Recognition was achieved in 1989, following intervention by the Royal College of Physicians of London.

Abstract:
There is an increasing in admitted patients with cases of gender identity disorder in the daycare clinic of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Division Dr. Soetomo, it is necessary to increase understanding and clinical ability in relation to gender identity disorders through psychiatry consultation discussion, so that management can be achieved properly and comprehensively. Disorder of sex development (DSD) is a medical disorder that is associated with an incompatibility between chromosomes, gonads, phenotypes and anatomy which is characterized by the development of external genital organs that are incompatible with whether it is male or female. Genetalia ambiguos can cause significant psychological stressors for patients or their families, where as a result of the conditions experienced, it will lead to gender dysphoria with the resulting effects, among others, in the form of anxiety, depression and low self-esteem, to affect the quality of life of children as adolescents and adults. . The method of preparing this report is a case analysis and the role of CLP which is given based on the results of the examination and references to management in the field of psychiatry of children and adolescents in cases of DSD from children aged 12 years. Conducted to strengthen the adaptation of patients to problems identifying gender development and to their families by emphasizing the importance of achieving optimal quality of life for children. The results of the case reports describe the role of Consultation Liason Psychiatry through communication and consultation between related areas of expertise, supportive psychotherapy and continuous Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) techniques along with psychoeducation in families providing good development results with results in reducing patient anxiety and depression, based on children's scoring Depression Inventory (CDI) of patients with Mosaicism, Mixed Gonadal Dysgenesis (MGD). The conclusion of this case report is that the problem of psychological stressors that arise in DSD requires psychiatric assistance according to the stages of child development. The important role of psychiatrists in the management of DSD cases has been recognized and stated in the joint consensus for the treatment of individuals with DSD since 2006. CLP needs to be built because of the complexity of treatment and therapy in DSD cases, which involve subspecialty pediatric endocrinology, urology, psychiatry, gynecology, genetics, workers. social nurse and medical ethics. described in the algorithm below in the management of cases of gender dysphoric.
