Abstract:
AbstractThe wavelike oscillations of the vertical scale height of the local population of classical Cepheids located at Galactocentric distances R0 – 1 kpc < Rg < R0 + 1 kpc is analyzed using Cepheid ages computed in terms of evolutionary models of Pols et al. (1998) with and without the allowance for convective overshooting. The resulting periods of vertical oscillations of stars about the galactic plane are found to be PZ = 74 ± 2 Myr and PZ = 104 ± 2 Myr for standard models and models with overshooting, respectively. If interpreted as a manifestation of vertical virial oscillations, the pattern found implies local mass density values of ρstd = 0.118 ± 0.007 M⊙ pc−3 and ρovs = 0.060 ± 0.004 M⊙ pc−3, respectively. The latter value is totally incompatible with recent estimates based on Hipparcos data and the former value, combined with recent estimates of the local density of visible matter, sets an upper limit of 0.023 M⊙ pc−3 for the local density of dark matter.

Abstract:
This work is focused on the Bayesian procedure for the estimation of the regional maximum possible earthquake magnitude <em>m</em>max. The paper briefly discusses the currently used Bayesian procedure for mmax, as developed by Cornell, and a statistically justifiable alternative approach is suggested. The fundamental problem in the application of the current Bayesian formalism for <em>m</em>max estimation is that one of the components of the posterior distribution is the sample likelihood function, for which the range of observations (earthquake magnitudes) depends on the unknown parameter <em>m</em>max. This dependence violates the property of regularity of the maximum likelihood function. The resulting likelihood function, therefore, reaches its maximum at the maximum observed earthquake magnitude <em>m</em>obsmax and not at the required maximum <em>possible</em> magnitude <em>m</em>max. Since the sample likelihood function is a key component of the posterior distribution, the posterior estimate of <em>m^</em>max is biased. The degree of the bias and its sign depend on the applied Bayesian estimator, the quantity of information provided by the prior distribution, and the sample likelihood function. It has been shown that if the maximum posterior estimate is used, the bias is negative and the resulting underestimation of <em>m</em>max can be as big as 0.5 units of magnitude. This study explores only the maximum posterior estimate of <em>m</em>max, which is conceptionally close to the classic maximum likelihood estimation. However, conclusions regarding the shortfall of the current Bayesian procedure are applicable to all Bayesian estimators, <em>e.g.</em> posterior mean and posterior median. A simple, <em>ad hoc</em> solution of this non-regular maximum likelihood problem is also presented.

Abstract:
Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) in plasma are constructed from a single molecule of apolipoprotein B-100 (M(r) 512000) in association with lipid (approximate M(r) 2-3 x 10(6)). The gross structure was studied using an updated pulsed-neutron camera LOQ with an area detector to establish the basis for the interpretation of structural changes seen during dynamic studies of LDL oxidation. Neutron-scattering data for LDL in 100% 2H2O buffers emphasize their external appearance. Guinier analysis on a continuous-flux neutron camera D17 revealed pronounced concentration-dependences in the radius of gyration, RG, and the intensity of forward scattering, I(0) (equivalent to the M(r) of LDL) between 0.5 and 11 mg of LDL protein/ml. LDL preparations from different donors gave different RG values. When extrapolated to zero concentration, RG values ranged between 8.3 and 10.6 nm and were linearly correlated with M(r), which is consistent with a spherical structure. The distance-distribution function P(r) in real space showed a single maximum at 9.1-10.9 nm, which is just under half the observed maximum dimension of 23.1 +/- 1.2 nm expected for a spherical structure. The neutron radial-density function p(r) exhibited a plateau of high and featureless density at the centre of LDL. LDL can be modelled by a polydisperse assembly of spheres with two internal densities and a mean radius close to 10.0 nm in a normal distribution of radii with a standard deviation of 2.0 nm. The data are consistent with recent electron-microscopy and ultracentrifugation data.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We present optical spectra of nine Galactic H ii regions observed with the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias telescope and located at Galactocentric distances (RG) from 4 to 8 kpc. The distances of the objects have been revised using Gaia DR2 parallaxes. We determine the electron temperature for all the nebulae, which allows a precise computation of their ionic abundances. We have included published data of an additional sample of Galactic H ii regions, providing a final data set of 42 objects. The shape of the radial gradients of O/H and N/H is linear and constant, discarding any substantial change of the slope, at least for RG between 4 and 17 kpc. The small dispersion of the O/H and N/H values with respect to the computed gradients imply the absence of significant azimuthal variations of the chemical abundances, at least in the quadrant covered by our observations. We find an almost flat N/O versus O/H diagram relation. This result is not observed in other nearby spiral galaxies except M31. Finally, we compare our computed gradients with those obtained using far-infrared (FIR) spectra. We confirm the significant offset in the N/O distribution between the optical and FIR observations. Possible explanations involve ionization correction factors and the strong dependence on density of the abundance determinations based on FIR lines.

We define the cover of an RG-module V to consist of an RG lattice Ṽ and a homomorphism π : Ṽ→ V such that π induces an isomorphism on Ext*RG(M, —) for any RG-lattice M. Here G is a finite group and, for simplicity in this introduction, R is a complete discrete valuation ring of characteristic zero with prime element p and perfect valuation class field. Let pn(G) be the highest power of p that divides |G| and, given an RG-lattice M, let pn(M) be the smallest power of p such that pn(M) idM : M→M factors through a projective lattice: n(M)≦n(G).

Abstract:
The charge state dependence of M-shell x-ray production cross sections of 67HO bombarded by 2-12 MeV carbon ions with and without K-vacancies are reported. The experiment was performed using an NEC 9SDH-2 tandem accelerator at the Ion Beam Modification and Analysis Laboratory of the University of North Texas. The high charge state carbon ions were produced by a post-accelerator stripping gas cell. Ultra-clean holmium targets were used in ion-atom collision to generate M-shell x rays at energies from 1.05 to 1.58 keV. The x-ray measurements were made with a windowless Si(Li) x-ray detector that was calibrated using radiative sources, particle induced x-ray emission (PIXE), and the atomic field bremsstrahlung (AFB) techniques.

This study reports from an empirical study planned and executed about adopting agile methodologies in public organizations. This study involved a literature review and interviews with four software development teams from two public organizations - large and medium-sized - located in Brazil. Through this method, it was found that agile methodologies could be adopted in public organizations. First, the analysis suggests that a good alternative is to start the adoption of agile methodologies with people willing to change - strongly supported by senior management - working on important pilot-projects. Subsequently, the change will depend on their interaction with other teams, in order to reach the vast majority of the organization; then these people work for the establishment of a learning ecosystem and continuous improvement to not accommodate - consciously or unconsciously - with the first winnings and later with the comfort zone. Second, we found that the benefits of agile methodologies in public organizations are more about people's satisfaction with the result of the work done and how it was achieved. Third, we also found some barriers difficult to overcome in public organizations, including the ingrained use of plan-drive methods, habit of ?Big Design Up-Front? (BDUF) and lack of knowledge and experience in agile methodologies. Fourth, we see that agile methodologies is not perceived as a finished process that ends when a particular victory is achieved; on the contrary, it is something that takes place continuously and depends a set of people factors and the environment where it is inserted to achieve new and better results continuously. Finally, we note that the adoption of agile methodologies in public organizations is a way without return, where its practitioners also need to share their experiences and help each other. The main contribution of this research is the development of a set of recommendations for adopting agile methodologies in public organizations, and the systematization of the empirical evidence about this topic.

Aristotle's definition of tragedy indicates a metaphysical project insinuated by a notion of k?tharsis. The reconstruction of Aristotle's method of definition is inspired in the concepts of en?rgeia and d?namis taken from Physics, understanding cause as substance. The Doctrine of the Four Causes is the theoretical basis of the definition of tragedy, placing tragedy in the genre of imitation and distinguishing its species: language (material cause), noble and complete action (formal cause), actors (efficient cause) and k?tharsis (temporarily identified with the final cause). Nevertheless, there is no final cause in the definition of tragedy. The k?tharsis of passions is experienced by the spectator when he witnesses tragedy, which is the imitation of a noble action, executed by actors and not narrated. Aristotle justifies hid proposition in favor of mimesis by assuming that imitation is natural to man since infancy and the view of objects allows whoever contemplates them to identify and learn the originals. As a metaphysical principle, k?tharsis is projected to beyond definition of tragedy, where it is manifested cathartically, in the spectator. Research about the spectator brings one back to the definition of tragedy, where the imitation is an imperfect copy which evokes in the spectator the presence of the originals of the imitated sentiments, thus realizing the k?tharsis of these emotions. In this way k?tharsis reveals itself as selfknowledge and approach of divine truth and perfections.

The term body without organs is present in a poem by the french writer, actor and director Antonin Artaud, written in 1947 and titled: To Have Done with the Judgement of God. I aim, in this work, from what we call investigative scenic writing, to problematize this term and its possible relations with the theater and also with some aspects of the Hindu myths. I unite the idea of the body without organs with the body in trance present in the stories of an Indian master named Caitanya Mahaprabhu. These ideas, along with the development of practices that come from some principles of Theatre Anthropology, are incentives for a creation process that highlights the work of preparation and creation of corporeal work of the actor. The relationship between the concepts and the practice raise discussions about where I stand as an actor-researcher in process

The aim of this PhD research was intended to analyze the role of the reward system by the BIS/BAS (Behavioural Inhibition System/ Behavioural Activation System) construct in healthy and addiction context. It explored the frontal brain asymmetry in decisional choices implying reward stimuli and punishment conditions. Results confirmed the hypothesis of a “reward bias” induced by high-BAS individuals and patients suffering from Substance Use Disorder (SUD) to overestimate the immediate reward to the detriment of the delayed reward during the Iowa Gambling Task. Another critical component is the frontal left-hyper activation of the brain in response to more risky options. This "inter-hemisphere" unbalancing effect can be considered as a critical indicator of the dysfunctional decision behavior in dependence or as a vulnerability factor to the development of addiction. Finally, this “cortical imbalance model” was applied to other forms of behavioural addiction, measured by the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). Indeed, an increased left frontal activity was observed for high-IAT individuals in response to rewarding stimuli. In particular, the results underlined the importance of an integrated model of addiction that takes into account the motivational system (BIS / BAS) related to the lateralization of cortical activity.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the central limit theorem for dependent random fields and its applications to nonparametric statistics. In the first part, we establish some quenched central limit theorems for random fields satisfying a projective condition à la Hannan (1973). Functional versions of these theorems are also considered. In the second part, we prove the asymptotic normality of kernel density and regression estimators for strongly mixing random fields in the sense of Rosenblatt (1956) and for weakly dependent random fields in the sense of Wu (2005). First, we establish the result for the kernel regression estimator introduced by Elizbar Nadaraya (1964) and Geoffrey Watson (1964). Then, we extend these results to a large class of recursive estimators defined by Peter Hall and Prakash Patil (1994)

Abstract:
In current everyday debates in Germany, many people are increasingly experiencing feelings of injustice, disadvantage and dependence. In the political sphere, these feelings are being taken up by populists and turned against democratic structures and processes. The large, independent charitable organisations in Germany (‘Freie Wohlfahrtspflege’), as a ‘pillar of the welfare state’ and an organisational structure with over 120,000 facilities and services and about 1.7 million employees, has direct contact with people throughout the country and especially with the disadvantaged. This also results in a responsibility for society and for democracy in Germany. How will the country live up to this responsibility? What are good examples, what can and should be optimised? With contributions by Holger Backhaus-Maul | Thomas Becker | Rabea Bieckmann | Anselm Böhmer | Rolf Frankenberger | Franziska Giffey | Natascha D. Abstract:
This study examines the use of mobile devices for the delivery of emergency notifications to end users from a mobile government (m-government) perspective. The study is informed by the task-technology fit model, technology acceptance models, and the literature on emergency management. Our findings indicate that the task, technology, behavioral, and to a lesser extent situational characteristics affect the use of m-government for the delivery of emergency notifications. Additional themes of equity and dependence emerge as relevant to user perceptions. This paper contributes to the m-government literature by examining and presenting findings relevant to emergency management and provides insights on the user perceptions of m-government for emergency notifications. This study also has implications for all levels of government including local, state, and federal. Lastly, as mobile technology use grows in the public domain this type of study advances the goal of using information and communications technologies (ICTs) to benefit human well-being.

Abstract:
Anticoagulants usually have no antiplatelet effect and platelet function inhibitors do not interact with the coagulation factors. Since thrombin has a decisive role in thrombus formation (growth and stabilization), inhibitors of the effect of thrombin on platelets may be of special importance in developing a novel type of anticoagulant with antiplatelet properties.D-Phe-Pro-Arg-H /I/ designed and synthetized in our Institute was found to be a highly specific, reversible non-competitive inhibitorgOf thrombin,a specific platelet agonist. (K.= 1x10-8 M). /I/ was administered parenterally and orally to white New Zealand rabbits and to beagle dogs. The kinetics of action was recorded by measuring the WBCT, APTT, PT, TT,platelet count (PC) and platelet aggregation (PA). Optimum degree of anticoagulation was considered by the values proposed by Verstraete and Verwilghen. /I/ was shown to be a highly specific inhibitor of PA induced by thrombin. No direct interaction between the inhibitor and the platelet membrane could be detected. Aggregability of human platelets in citrated PRP and that of the gel-filtrated platelets induced by ADP or collagen did not change after incubation with /I/. The antiplatelet effect of /I/ was studied by ex vivo experiments where the inhibitor was the anticoagulant ( 30 ug/ml whole blood ) instead of citrate. Comparing the aggregability caused by several inducers in citrated human PRP with that of in /I/-PRP a significant difference was observed when epinephrine was the PA-inducer. /I/ acts via formation of an enzyme-inhibitor complex that inhibits the binding of thrombin on their receptor-sites at the platelet membrane. In vivo experiments showed a close correlation between TT and PA induced by thrombin. /I/ proved completely harmless to platelets and red blood cells. No significant change in PC could be detected.
