Full textNo study has been as yet conducted about the homecoming and the psychological after-effects of French Resistance fighters deported to Nazi concentration camps. This study focuses on the past good moments, difficulties and coping strategies, as well as the current PTSD symptoms, of a sample of 36 men and 19 women using a semi-structured interview and a questionnaire. Coping with homecoming difficulties, more frequent than goods moments, is done preferentially through problem-oriented strategies. Moreover, most of the participants present current psychological after-effects, among which the repetition syndrome prevails. Thus, both the interest of long-term follow-up, post-event awareness and problem-oriented coping as well as the importance of militant commitment and transmission in the integration of deportation as a positive identity component, are enhanced

Full textGeneral objective: to study the influence of concentration camp hardships on family socialization and on the personalization of the descendants born after the end of the war. 4 themes are presented as follows: 1) biographical dynamics of the prisoner; 2) existence of a family sub-culture; 3) values passed on to the descendants; 4) characteristics of the descendants ‘self-image. Methodology: qualitative study of 15 families with the support of semi-directed interviews and questionnaires. Quantitative study of 60 (other) descendants with the support of questionnaires. This work shows that the passing on has not simply been produced by the direct relations between the parent and the descendant but depends especially on the level of integration of the parent into the prisoners community. The descendants have built up their social identities by being confronted with a cultural heritage, which might be passed on more or less deliberately. One notices the same phenomenon of social repetition and political passing on, but I have emphasized that the descendants who have had to interact permanently and differently with 3 experiential levels; -the calling-up of facts, memories, values associated with imprisonment; -the everyday way of life specific to the families; -the social context of the prisoners community with its emblems, its symbols, its rituals, have become aware

Full textDeportations by means of large-scale transports of 1,000 people, small convoys of 50 prisoners, killing executions, reckless slaughter. ... German repression in Occupied France took many forms. The measure of this repression that claimed the largest number of victims in Occupied France from 1940 to 1944 was deportation. Tens of thousands - at least 60,500 people from France's northern and southern occupied zones - were subject to this enormous forced transfer to the Reich's concentrationary and prison systems. This study demonstrates that to comprehend deportees as a group, we must first focus on the steps involved in their deportation. The concept of deportation policies has enabled us to think through such a process. By envisaging deportation as a congeries of policies, we can examine the objectives of the Germans, specify transfer conditions, and explain their results. Further, this work offers an indispensable contextualization by placing these deportation policies within the larger framework of the repressive methods established in Occupied France. Finally, because this subject could not be delimited and explored using this approach after the World War Il, we discuss the function of representations and of memory, as well as their ramifications for historiography

Full textBetween 1942 and 1944, about 75700 Jews were deported from France and sent to East European camps, mostly to Auschwitz. The concentration camps were liberated by the allied troops between September 1944 and may 1945. Very few survivors came back to France, about 2800 people. At the same period and till 1948, an important number of displaced persons were in transit in France. More than 20 000 of them emigrated to Palestine. This thesis is composed of two stages : - The liberation of the camps and the repatriation of deportees to France. The study of public opinion in France at the time of the deportees return and during the transit of the Displaced Persons. Our aim is to show the difference in public opinion's attitude versus these two kinds of Jewish survivors from the genocide

Full textIn 1789, the traditional area of the Vendômois, bordered by the Beauce and Sologne regions, is poor and the revolutionary authorities have not succeeded in addressing the prevailing food shortage. By growing the landed property of the upper classes, who already had a stronghold on three quarters of the region’s real estate and who would now control the political and administrative system, the sale of “biensnationaux” would reinforce their influence over the population. Although the paternalistic system in the field of agriculture came to an end, it not made way for a flourishing capitalistic system. The lack of development in industry and agriculture will remain important throughout the XIXth century. The outcome of the sale has been an almost complete disappearance of church property whileownership by the nobility was divided by three. The transfer of ownership to the peasantry which might have seemed real at the times of the first sales was greatly diminished by the subsequent resales over the next fifty years. Another noteworthy point which emerges from this study is the sense of moderation of “vendômoise”population, and of those political leaders, when it was able to appoint to administer locally. Although the local population, which had a strong attachment to tradition, did take part in the acquisition of national lands, it resisted to extreme behaviour of the political leaders from Paris and Blois. Unlike what happened in many other more urban french regions, persecutions and destructions which characterized the period of the national sales were not systematic in the Vendômois, much to its credit
