Full textBased on Self Determination Theory, this study explored the relationships between trainers’ motivational style, be it autonomy supportive or controlling, the satisfaction and frustration of athletes basic psychological needs, and vitality and oppositional defiance in a group of 200 peruvian athletes. Furthermore, this study examined the psychometric properties of the instruments finding evidences of adequate validity and reliability in the sample. Perceived trainers’ autonomy support positively associated with the satisfaction of basic psychological needs (r = .26, p < .01) and subjective vitality (r = .19, p < .01). Moreover, perceived use of controlling rewards positively associated with the frustration of basic psychological needs (r = .27, p < .01) and oppositional defiance. (r = .19, p < .01). The path analysis indicated that the relationship between perceived trainers’ autonomy support and subjective vitality was partially mediated by the satisfaction of basic psychological needs. This same analysis, indicated that the relationship between perceived trainers’ use of controlling rewards and oppositional defiance was fully mediated by the frustration of basic psychological needs. These results are consistent with other investigations that bring to light the existence of a bright side and a dark side of motivation.

Full textObjective: Determine if there is an association between injuries and flexibility of athletes from a private university in Lima-Peru in 2018. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study in athletes from a university in Lima, Peru. Athletes who did not perform the flexibility test were excluded. A secondary base was used where measures of ranges of flexibility, core stability and proprioception were evidenced. Flexibility was measured through seven tests using the goniometer, six in core stability and six tests in proprioception. Results: Of a total of 305 athletes, 61.4% are men, 88.8% belong to humanities careers, 53.4% practice individual sports and 35.2% have injuries prior to the evaluation. Regarding the descriptive analysis of flexibility, the hip flexion test with knee flexion on the right side (passive) had a mean range of motion of 141.33 ° and 139.23 ° on the left side. When performing the cross between flexibility and sports injuries, no statistically significant values were found. However, in the multivariate analysis - crude, it was found that the modified Thomas test on the right-normal side had a significant value of p = 0.01 and on the left side - hypermobile a value of p <0.05. Conclusion: In our research article it is concluded that there is no association between flexibility and sports injuries. However, this result is refuted by various studies because they show the opposite.

Full textAbstract The objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between Self-Efficacy and Mental Strength in Federated Athletes of Individual Disciplines of Metropolitan Lima, for which 144 athletes from four disciplines were evaluated (Karate, Judo, Taekwondo and Athletics). We used the general self-efficacy scale (Grimaldo, 2010) and the Mental Strength Questionnaire in sports (Sheard et al., 2009). The results show that the relationship between both variables is positive and statistically significant. In addition, it is worth mentioning the positive relationship between self-efficacy with the age of the participants and the direct correlation between Mental Strength and the days / hours that athletes train. No significant differences were found between the sex of the participants in both variables.

Full textThe present study has the purpose of exploring and describing the motivational and well-being standards amongst elite athletes attached to the benefits programs offered by the Peruvian Institute of Sports. Furthermore, it aims to analyze if there is a relationship between the variables of Autonomous/ Controlled Motivation and Subjective Well-being, as described by the Selfdetermination Theory (Deci and Ryan, 2000a). To do this, correlation analysis were conducted between the scores obtained from the Behavioral Regulation in Sport Questionnaire of Lonsdale, Hodge and Rose (2008) and Diener´s (2000) Subjective Wellbeing Scale (Life Satisfaction) with a sample of 179 outstanding athletes belonging to the High Performance Centers (CAR, in Spanish) and to the Athlete Support Programme (PAD, in Spanish). The results indicate that there is a direct and medium relationship between the variables of this study, as well as between Identified Regulation and Subjective Well-being. Therefore, for the evaluated sample, an increase in well-being is subject to autonomously motivated behaviors that are interesting and of personal value. Significant differences were also found between the motivational quality of the participants according to the type of sport that is practiced, gender, place of origin and condition of CAR or PAD. Different alternatives for the promotion of Autonomous Motivation and thus Well-being enhancement of elite athletes receiving institutional support are proposed.

Full textThis research is about the contribution of gastronomic innovation through the proposal and design of diets that are required by elite or high performance athletes in the city of Lima. The union of gastronomy and the sports practice of high-performance disciplines allows the development of the line of research and the contribution of great future benefits, since it provides different schemes and methods to raise the way in which the gastronomic field can benefit nutritional studies and the fundamental role that gastronomes play. These types of studies are scarce and this link has been little explored. Therefore, the contribution of gastronomy in the environment of sports competition and in the nutrition of athletes is based on a bibliographic review and incorporates the proposal of the application of culinary techniques in the preparation of the diets of athletes from contact disciplines of the National Sports Village. This allows gastronomy to contribute with innovative proposals to support diets, which are valued and easy to prepare by athletes. The design of these diets that are given through gastronomic innovation takes into account the composition of a diet and the correct caloric intake of an athlete during and after training, so that maximum performance can be achieved and in the most efficient way. Therefore, the competition standards for each of the contact sports are taken into account.

Full textIntroduction: Hemoglobin is responsible for the oxygen transport in many physiological processes. The most important element is iron, which is modified in the athlete by increasing blood volume and hematopoiesis through exercise. In sports, evidence suggest female gender is associate with anemia. In Peru, there are not enough evidence about association between and gender in Peruvian athletes. Methods: The database of the National Biomedical Services Directorate of the Peruvian Institute of Sport was used for the period from January to December 2013. Numerical variables were evaluated using the Student’s t- test or the Mann-Whitney U-test, depending on the normality of the variables. Categorical variables were evaluated using the Chi-square test. Crude and adjusted Prevalence Ratios were calculated using the Poisson regression with robust error variance, to assess the association between gender and anemia. Results: 633 athletes between 18 and 35 years old were analyzed being mostly male (68.4%). Variables included in the bivariate model were gender, sports age and iron supplementation, which were also included in the multivariate model, and an association between anemia and sports age (p = 0.01) was found. No association between gender and anemia was found (RPa= 0,96; 95% IC 0,60-1,40; p=0,85) However, the prevalence of anemia was above 15% (17,9% men and 16,8% women). The main result was that there is no significant difference when comparing the prevalence of anemia in men and women (17,9% and 16.8%). Conclusions: There is not association between anemia and gender in members of the IPD in 2013.

Full textThe present study aims to verify the relationship between gender stereotypes and Athletic Identity (AI) in male and female university athletes from a private university in Metropolitan Lima. The sample is made up of 175 students from different disciplines and sports levels, who described a male athlete, a female athlete and a sports person. For this, the Sex Roles Stereotype Scale (Raguz, 1991) was used; and to measure AI, the Spanish adaptation of the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale-E (Peiró-Velert, Valencia-Peris, Fos-Ros and DevísDevís, 2016) was applied. The results showed that the sports field is still predominantly masculine, even if the same conditions of competition are maintained. Thus, the greater the identification as an athlete, the greater the assignment of masculine characteristics, regardless of sex. Finally, rather than age or sex, it is observed that the level of sports competition is the variable that would most alter the identification with the role of athlete and the assignment of male traits to this role.

Full textIntroduction. Nutrition is one of the fundamental pillars to improve the performance of athletes. Objective. Evaluate the nutritional contribution and measure the effective intake of breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks that are served and consumed in the dining room for the athletes housed in the Villa Deportiva Nacional (VIDENA), and analyze if it meets the energy and macronutrient requirements of the athletes. Material and method. During a week of August 2018, the food service (breakfast, lunch, dinner and partitioning) for athletes living in the Villa Deportiva Nacional (VIDENA), was analyzed using the direct weighing method. Results. The menus served to 30 athletes from different sports, cover on average 81.5% of calories, 56.8% of carbohydrates, 133.0% of proteins and 128.5% of the fats required. On the other hand, the effective consumption of food reaches an average of 92.3% for calories, 92.2% for carbohydrates, 93.7% for proteins and 91.1% for fats. However, the effective consumption of the food reaches 75% of the required calories, 52.2% of the required carbohydrates, 124.0% of the required proteins and 117.6% of the required fats. Conclusions. The menu served in the dining room, and its effective consumption, does not completely meet the caloric and carbohydrate requirements of the athletes, but it does meet or exceed the protein and fat requirements. However, the adequacy to consumption of calories and macronutrients served is optimal. The determinants of this imbalance deserve further multidisciplinary research as nutrition is ultimately one of the pillars of sports performance.

Full textThere are unfavorable situations that an athlete will have to deal with and the way they face the problem can affect his performance as an athlete. Therefore, it is important that the athlete feels comfortable with the sports environment and feels motivated, in order to perform well. The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between basic psychological needs, motivational climate, motivation, athlete engagement and competitive anxiety. In this study, 202 collective sports athletes from Lima Metropolitana participated. It was found that the satisfaction of basic needs and autonomous motivation positively predict athlete engagement. Likewise, it was found that the frustration of basic psychological needs predicts competitive anxiety. In this way, an athlete who feels that he can intervene correctly and competently in his sport and have a good relationship with his teammates will have a greater commitment to his sport. Also, an athlete who does not have autonomy in his sport, does not feel competent and does not have a good relationship with his teammates will tend to have greater anxiety for a competition. The results are discussed around the bright side and the dark side of the motivation.

Full textThere is a high prevalence of the use of dietary supplements in athletes from different parts of the world. It has been noted that usually more hours of training are prone to more dietary supplement use. In regard to Peru there are very few references; no important studies regarding the topic were found. Studying about the knowledge, consuming habits, and sources of information regarding the use in general and the type of food supplements used could help to create better policies and protocols of attention for coaches and athletes, and thereby improve the performance of the athletes. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the frequency of the practice of the sport and the consumption of nutritional supplements in qualified judocas of the Peruvian Judo Sports Federation and members of de judo team of the Peruvian University of Applied Science. Likewise, those were related with the different variables that could influence them. A survey instrument was used to collect data and were done in a personal survey. A significant relationship was found between the use of dietary supplements and training hours on both studied dietary supplement groups. It was found that those participants who trained more than 19 hours per week had 1,58 more possibilities of using dietary supplements for muscle building than those who trained 19 or less hours per week. In the same way, it was found that based on an adjusted multivariate analysis by statistically significant variables, the participants who trained more than 19 hours per week had 1,21 times more probability of using dietary supplements for performance enhancement. The findings on this study could be used by the nutritionist of both institutions to identify the used dietary supplements, frequency and main reason of use, as well as implement educational programs about the correct usage of dietary supplements.
