Abstract:
Given the falling returns in share markets and the comparative safety of savings accounts protected by the deposit insurance provided by the Australian Government, there was a significant surge in deposits made in savings ac counts. According to an article published in The Australian , Australian households deposited an estimated $38 billion into savings accounts over a period of six months ending on the 31 st of March, 2009. Among the various deposit-taking institutions, Westpac received the largest part of this growth. (Jimenez, 2009). Interestingly, there have been no major changes in the interest rates offered on savings accounts by the major banks recently. If the savings account market is examined , the first thing that one notices is the large number of options available to a prospective customer. There are more than fifty savings accounts on offer by various banks, building societies and credit unions. These include regular savings accounts, high interest savings accounts with more stringent conditions on deposits, withdrawals and usage and exclusively online savings accounts. Any given savings account product can have different combinations of attributes apart from the interest rate offered such as the minimum balance requirements, the minimum lock-in period, etc. For an average consumer who wants to open a savings account, there is a plethora of choices available. This paper considers how a typical consumer might make a choice among so many options and whether this choice is “right”.

Abstract:
A Bank that wishes to advance money to a customer who has an account in credit may wish to utilise that credit balance as security for the loan. Similarly, a bank might find it advantageous if a third party who is guaranteeing a loan has an account in credit at the bank so that, in the event of the principal debtor's failure, the bank is in a position to set-off any sums outstanding on the loan against its own obligations to repay the surety. Surety arrangements of this kind provided the background for two test cases examined in Re Bank of Credit and Commerce International SA (No. 8) [1997] 3 W.L.R. 909. The bank had given loans to companies secured by arrangements pursuant to which third parties with deposit accounts at the bank (the “depositors”), first, purported to grant charges over those accounts, and secondly, accepted that they were not entitled to repayment until the loans had been repaid in full.

Abstract:
A bank is a financial institution whose existence depends absolutely on the trust of its customers who entrust their savings funds. Banks are very concerned that the trust of the public, who have and who will save their funds, are well-maintained, considering that the bank is part of the financial system and payment system. Bank secrecy is very important because banks need the trust of the people who keep their money in the bank. The customer only entrusts his money to the bank or makes use of the bank's services if the bank provides a guarantee that the bank's knowledge of deposits and the state of their assets will not be misused. The legal relationship between the bank and the depository customer starts from the signing of a written agreement (contractual relationship) between the bank and the customer which contains the rights and obligations for each party. As for the form of agreement for depositing funds between the customer and the bank, it is called a deposit agreement (Article 1319 Civil Code). In a deposit agreement, the bank sets certain general requirements in a deposit account or savings account, among others, the recipient of the deposit (bank) can use the depositors' money and at a certain time the bank will provide interest. Other provisions that can be used as the basis of relations between banks and depositors are Proxy Giving. Depositors give their power to banks when signing deposit accounts or savings accounts or bank accounts. This agreement becomes a law or law for both parties (Article 1338 of the Civil Code). As a manifestation of the bank's responsibility for depositing customers, banks must pay attention to the 4 (four) pillars of the relationship between depositors and banks, namely: Prudence, Health, Bank Secrets and Trust

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study the differences or variance in the yields of Islamic and conventional bank deposits and capital, respectively, in view of their contractual differences, namely the former which is based on equity and the latter on debt.Design/methodology/approachThe paper uses a financial ratio approach.FindingsIt was found that deposit yields in conventional banks were lower than return on equity (ROE), which truly reflect the contractual differences between fixed deposit and bank's capital. Also, it was found that Islamic banks' deposit yield and ROEs do not reflect their risk‐taking properties, as their variances were found to be smaller.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper adds to the literature on risk‐return relationship in Islamic capital theory, which currently lacks theoretical studies.Practical implicationsThe paper shows that increasing the level of risk taking in mudarabah investment account could increase its expected returns.Originality/valueSince both shareholders' capital and mudarabah investment accounts constitute risk capital, variance in yields should be proportional to risk. The paper is the first attempt to explore and compare yields from Islamic bank capital and mudarabah deposits.

Abstract:
The Islamic Financial Services Act (IFSA) 2013 is a Malaysian banking law which was enacted to regulate and supervise the banking practices of Islamic finance institutions. IFSA 2013 has the effect of repealing the Islamic Banking Act 1983 (IBA), the Takaful Act 1984, the Payment System Act 2003 and the Exchange Control Act 1953. Prior to the introduction of IFSA 2013 there was no clear distinction between deposit and investment accounts. The IFSA 2013 re-defines Islamic deposit, and classifies investment accounts as non-principal guaranteed while deposit account as principal guaranteed. The objective of this paper is thus to explore implications of IFSA 2013 on investment accounts from the perspective of the banker. Future research could explore the perspective of account holders looking at their views on investment accounts and IFSA 2013.

Abstract:
Introduction. Mining disturbs the natural state of the rock mass. Besides, the field reserves are of a different degree and nature of man-induced changes, which directly affects mining prime cost and ore marketable value. The scientific and practical relevance of the research consists in ensuring increased completeness and economic efficiency of field development by applying the development systems of different classes and taking into account the man-induced changes in reserves in mining dynamics. Research aim is to substantiate the technological schemes of mining, that take into account the possibility and feasibility of developing the reserves which have been affected by the man-induced changes, in particular when switching from one class of development systems to another. Research methods. In this research, based on the analysis of the mining and geological conditions of copper sulfide deposits, economic and mathematical modeling of developing an ore deposit by development systems of different classes was carried out, and the man-induced changes in underground reserves in the process of mining were taken into account. Results. Based on the modeling results, it was found that the increase in the economic efficiency of the deposit development is provided by justifying the type, sequence, and limits of applying different geotechnologies related to different classes of development systems within the entire deposit and a separate ore body. Conclusion. The research results can be used when designing fields in terms of selecting and substantiating the applied development systems.

Abstract:
Can increasing control over earnings incentivize a woman to work, and thereby influence norms around gender roles? We randomly varied whether rural Indian women received bank accounts, training in account use, and direct deposit of public sector wages into their own (versus husbands’) accounts. Relative to the accounts only group, women who also received direct deposit and training worked more in public and private sector jobs. The private sector result suggests gender norms initially constrained female employment. Three years later, direct deposit and training broadly liberalized women’s own work-related norms, and shifted perceptions of community norms. (JEL G51, G53, J16, J31, O12, O16, Z13)

Abstract:
Values of small-strain shear modulus Gmax, for a Champlain Sea clay deposit were obtained both under an embankment built 18 years ago, and outside of the area influenced by this embankment. The small-strain shear moduli Gmax were measured in the laboratory by using resonant column tests and in the field by spectral analysis of surface waves. In addition to verifying the two methods, comparison of the in situ and laboratory values allowed evaluation of the influence of the sampling and the need to correct the laboratory values to account for the age of the deposit. The test program also made it possible to verify the influence of the deposit's consolidation and the existing models predicting small-strain shear moduli in clay deposits. Key words : shear modulus, shear-wave velocity, resonant column, in situ test, surface waves, soft clay.

Abstract:
This paper introduces Rastin Swap Deposit account as a new banking deposit account which is interest-free and is based on Swap Contract in Rastin Banking. In this depositing by opening the deposit, the depositor is entitled to use an interest-free loan to the amount and duration that his resources have been being deposited and then return the money back to the bank. Depositor and bank agree that a combination of money and duration be selected in such a way that the products of amount and duration in both operations of depositing and loaning be the same. From the time of depositing to the first maturity (the date that depositor requests loan), the depositor is lender and bank is borrower; and from the time of the first maturity to second maturity (the date that depositor returns the money back to the bank) depositor is borrower and bank is a lender. Rastin Swap Deposit (RSD) can be issued in both local and foreign currencies. JEL: E43, E44, E52, E58, E62, E63

Non-maturing liabilities make up a large part of the funding base of financial institutions. These liabilities, such as checking and savings accounts, while allowing their depositors to withdraw the full amount of their investments at any time, the balance remain in the financial institutions for long period of time. The lack of defined contractual maturity makes the risk management a difficult task. This study analyzes the implied maturity of savings deposits through a replicating portfolio model. As a result, it’s presented structures for allocating cash flows to manage market and liquidity risk of savings deposits.

Mohd-Karim, Muhammad Syahmi. "Profit-sharing deposit accounts in Islamic banking : analysing the perceptions and attitudes of the Malaysian depositors." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/520/.

Full text
Abstract:
Islamic banking deposits are fundamentally structured in a different way than the conventional banking deposits. Each type of Islamic banking deposits, such as savings, demand, and timed deposits, is devised using the approved Shari’ah contracts such as qard, wadiah, murabahah, and mudarabah. These contracts are opposed to the conventional concepts, as they are based on the concept of a ‘lender-borrower’ relationship. In addition, the Shari’ah-approved contracts are unique as they feature a different nature of risk and return. This is especially the case for mudarabah contracts (henceforth referred to as profit-sharing contracts). The uniqueness of profit-sharing contracts in deposit products has been given due recognition in theory and also in practice, as most of the Islamic banks in Malaysia offered this product. In addition, the unique features and characteristics of profit-sharing based deposit accounts are also highlighted in the prudential standards issued by prominent regulatory bodies such as AAOIFI and IFSB which, have been adopted by the Bank Negara Malaysia (Central Bank of Malaysia). Nevertheless, it is argued by many Islamic banks practitioners, especially in Malaysia, that the concept of profit-sharing in deposits products is not practical in reality, because the depositors do not behave according to, nor accept the principles that have been laid down in the Shari’ah. Thus it is argued that both the depositors and the Islamic bankers have treated the product similar to any other conventional banking deposits products. The main aim of this study, hence, is to explore and examine the level of awareness, knowledge, perceptions, and attitude of the Islamic banking depositors in Malaysia towards characteristics of profit-sharing deposits accounts in accordance with the fundamental Shari’ah principles but also the regulations prevailing. In addition, this research also attempts to explore the significant determinant factors that encourage the depositors to engage with Islamic banking deposits accounts in general and profit-sharing deposits accounts in particular. In fulfilling the aim of the study, primary data collection research was adopted through a survey questionnaire technique. The questionnaires were distributed to eight Islamic banks representing various types of Islamic banks in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The questionnaire asked various pertinent questions, which intended to elicit the depositors’ opinions, perceptions, and attitudes towards the unique characteristics of profit-sharing contract as specified in Shari’ah muamalah principles. The characteristics among others are: (i) concept of uncertain deposits returns; (ii) concept of non-guarantee for the deposits; (iii) concept of profit equalization reserve. A total 649 of the returned questionnaires were complete and fit for analysis purpose. The data were analysed using various statistical analysis techniques ranging from simple frequency distribution analysis to the more advanced analyses such as non-parametric statistical analysis, factor analysis, and logistic regression. In general, the results of the study show that the level of awareness of the need to have Islamic banking deposits accounts because of religious reasons is considered as high among the Malaysian depositors. Nevertheless, the results also indicate that a high level of awareness is not being translated into a high level of understanding concerning the objectives of the products which are structured in accordance to the Shari’ah-compliant contracts. This can be seen in the major findings of this study: the characteristics of profit-sharing contracts, which arguably are the most desirable Shari’ah-compliant contracts, are not acceptable to the depositors. This indirectly implies that they are still strongly influenced by the nature of conventional banking products. In addition, the logistics regression results further proved that related factors (‘financial services’ and ‘income’) emerged as the main determinants in creating demand for profit-sharing deposits accounts. The results of the research should draw the attention of the Islamic bankers and also the regulators to finding ways for improving the level of understanding among the depositors. However, the critical successful factor in educating the depositors is highly dependent on the level of knowledge exhibited by the Islamic bankers themselves, which can be a real concern as highlighted by the findings of this study.

Abstract:
2§, står föräldraförvaltningen under överförmyndarens tillsyn.
Abstract A person under the age of eighteen is underage, which means that he cannot reign over his own assets and cannot conclude legally binding agreements according to FB 9 chapter 1§. Usually it's the parents that have custody and guardianship of their child. It is the guardian's responsibility to manage the child's assets. If the value of the assets exceeds the eight base amount or if the assets have a particular origin (inheritance, legacy or gift) or character according to FB 13 chapter 2§ then parents conduct is the subject of the overguardian’s supervision. It obtains protection for the child's property against parents’ creditors in situations when parents are facing foreclosure or bankruptcy. If the underaged’s assets value is below that limit or if there’s no requirements for overguardian’s supervision, the parents can freely determine how these assets can be used or place money into a bank account according to the FB 13 chapter 1§. However, FB 13 chapter 1 and 7§§ requires that the child's assets shall be separated from parents property and what isn’t used for the child's needs shall bring interests. Parents have a duty of alimony for their children as stated by FB 7 chapter 1§ out of consideration for child’s reasonable needs and parents' overall economic capacity along with the child's own assets and social benefits. The state assigns each child resident in Sweden the universal child allowance which is intended for the child's upbringing and living expenses, but it is paid to the child's guardian. The parents decide freely way the universal child allowance is to be used, as long as the child's needs are satisfied. The amount of the universal child allowance covers only a part of the costs of having a child in the family. This is because the parents have the primary maintenance obligation, while the state's responsibility is secondary. Parents thus have disposition over the universal child allowance and may choose to spend either the whole amount for the child's needs or to place the amount in a separate bank account to secure the child's economy in the future. The way this account is managed determines whether the money can be protected against parental creditors at execution issues.

Van, Eeden Johan. "Basin analysis and sequence stratigraphy a review, with a short account of its applicability and utility for the exploration of auriferous placers in the Witwatersrand Basin." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1005546.

Full text
Abstract:
The Witwatersrand basin is unique in terms of its mineral wealth. The gold in the Witwatersrand basin is mainly concentrated in the placers and two types of unconformities are associated with the placer formation. This paper attempts to quantitatively describe the origin and depositional process of placers within the context of basin analysis, geohistory and sequences stratigraphic framework. Several tectonic models have been proposed for the evolution of the Witwater~rand basin and it seems as if a cratonic foreland basin accounts for many of the observed features observed the Central Rand Group basin. The tectonic subsidence curve generated for the Witwatersrand Basin clearly implies foreland basin response which was superimposed an older, deep seated extensional basin. These compressive tectonics can be superimposed on extensional basins, where the shift from extensional to compressional tectonics lead to inversion processes. The critical issues about the Witwatersrand basin which were addresed in this review, is the validity of basin wide correlation of placer unconformuties and whether sequence stratigraphy is applicable to fluvial systems of the Witwatersrand sequence. It is believed that the Central Rand Group was deposited as alluvial - fan deltas by fluvially dominated, braidplain systems with minor marine interaction which had a considerable impact on the preservation of economically viable placers. Most important to the exploration geologist is the recognition of stacking patterns of the fluvial strata to determine change in the rate at which accommodation was created. Identifying sequence boundaries and other relevant surfaces important for identifying these stacking patterns of the sequences, depends entirely on the recognition of a hierarchy of stratal units including beds, bedsets, parasequences, parasequence sets and the surfaces bounding sequences. Placers are closely associated with the development of disconformities and therefore become important to recognise in fluvial strata. If these placers are to become economic, the duration of subaerial exposure of the unconformities that allowed the placers to become reworked and concentrated must be determined. In order to preserve the placer, a sudden marine transgression is necessary to allow for minimal shoreline reworking and to cap the placer to prevent it from being dispersed. The placers in the Witwatersrand basin occur in four major gold-bearing placer zones in the Central Rand Group. Accordingly they can be assigned to four supercycles, which are cyclical and therefore predictive. It is the predictive nature of these rocks and the ability of sequence stratigraphy to enhance this aspect, which is a pre-requisite for an effective exploration tool in the search for new ore bodies or their extension in the Witwatersrand basin.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter introduces the system of accounts of the main sectors of the economy (households; non-financial corporations, the government; banks, and the central bank), describing how these sectors are interrelated through financial claims and liabilities. A financial system, consisting of commercial banks and the central bank, manages flows of funds originating from households, without these flows causing a need for the real sectors to liquidate illiquid real assets. The basic types of assets and liabilities are: real goods, gold, banknotes, deposits, bonds, loans, and equity. We explain how the shortcomings of both IOU and commodity-money based financial systems can be solved via establishing a central bank. A central bank is defined here by its balance sheet and central bank money is the central bank’s basic liability. Both monetary policy implementation and lender of last resort issues relate to liquidity flows within balance sheets. Understanding the logic of basic financial flows is therefore the basis for understanding central banking.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter develops further the role of a central bank and its interplay with commercial banks. Together, the two ensure the provision of liquidity to the economy, such that the real sectors are shielded from flows of funds originating from household and investors. We also disaggregate the banking system into two banks to represent deposit flows between banks and their impact on the central bank’s balance sheet, and to distinguish between what we call “relative” and “absolute” central bank intermediation. We then integrate deposit money creation by commercial banks into our system of financial accounts, and revisit some old debates, such as the limits of bank money creation and the role of related parameters that the central bank can set (not only the reserve requirement ratio, but also the collateral framework). Finally, we explain the concepts of “plain money” and “full reserve banking” within the financial accounts, and also discuss in this framework the recent proposals regarding central bank digital currency (CBDC).

Abstract:
AbstractWire arc additive manufacturing allows the production of metallic parts by depositing beads of weld metal using arc-welding technologies. This low-cost additive manufacturing technology has the ability to manufacture large-scale parts at a high deposition rate. However, the quality of the obtained parts is greatly affected by the various thermal phenomena present during the manufacturing process. Numerical simulation remains an effective tool for studying such phenomena. In this work, a new finite element technique is proposed in order to model metal deposition in WAAM process. This technique allows to gradually construct the mesh representing the deposited regions along the deposition path. The heat source model proposed by Goldak is adapted and combined with the proposed metal deposition technique taking into account the energy distribution between filler material and the molten pool. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by series of experiments, of which an example is detailed in this paper.

Abstract:
The main part of the bank's resources is formed by attracting customers' funds to deposit accounts, and their amount, in turn, depends on the effectively planned policy of the bank. The possibility of active operations depends on the volume and structure of borrowed funds by a banking institution. In the context of financial and economic and pandemic crises, the analysis of the structure of attracted resources becomes important, namely: the formation of the deposit portfolio of commercial banks, taking into account the use of long-term deposits as a future investment resource. The essence and significance of deposit activity of a commercial bank are analyzed. The peculiarities of the formation of the deposit portfolio of a commercial bank are determined. The financial and economic indicators of the deposit activity of the First Ukrainian International Bank Joint-Stock Company are analyzed. The analysis of the bank's deposit programs was performed.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses Article 36 of the ICDR Rules. Article 36 sets out the basic rules for when deposits are to be paid as an advance on the costs of the arbitration, the consequences for non-payment, and the Administrator’s duty to account to the parties for how the deposits have been used. The advance on costs is strategically important because, unlike in litigation, it requires the parties to ‘front’ potentially significant sums in order to continue to have the dispute resolved by arbitration. This can be used by either party to try to gain leverage. The text of Article 36 was the subject of several revisions with the 2014 amendments to the ICDR Rules. A new paragraph was added to the Article, making explicit that a party’s failure to pay a required deposit can be treated as a withdrawal of the party’s claim or counterclaim.

Sterkfontein Caves is the single richest early hominin site in the world, with deposits yielding two potential species of Australopithecus, Paranthropus robustus, and early Homo, as well as an extensive faunal collection and stone tools. Recent advances in uranium-lead (U-Pb) dating of speleothems and palaeomagnetic analysis at Sterkfontein provide the first consistent chronological framework for Member 4 (MB4) and so the interned australopith fossils. Current data suggest that the MB4 deposit and so australopith remains accumulated over at least 400,000 years (2.4–2.0 Ma) if not 500,000–800,000 years. This long period of deposition should be taken into account when studying the MB4 australopith remains and looking at variability in both anatomy and other data such as isotopic evidence for diet.

Abstract:
This chapter focusses on remedies agreed by the parties for breach of contract. Parties may wish to include a term in the contract which dictates what should happen in the event of breach of contract. If the term states that a certain amount of money should be paid upon breach, that term might be valid as a liquidated damages clause or unenforceable as a penalty. If the amount chosen is a genuine pre-estimate of loss, or is ‘commercially justified’, then it is likely to be valid. If the defaulting party had already paid money to the innocent party as a deposit, the innocent party may be able to forfeit that deposit. A term stipulating that specific performance or an injunction will be granted upon breach will not bind the court. However, the court may take into account such a term when deciding whether to exercise its equitable discretion.

Abstract:
Solid particles ingestion can deteriorate performance and stability of gas turbines through the build-up of deposits on the aerofoils. In some cases, the effect is sufficient to require an engine shut-down or to cause a failure. The fouling phenomenon can be characterized by two different phases: particle sticking and deposit evolution. The sticking process of an impinging particle has been deeply studied with several models available in the literature, both deterministic and stochastic. A less investigated phase is the the evolution of the deposit over time. A deposit is subjected to several forces that either tend to make it sticking to the surface or to detach from it. In the hot section of the gas turbine, the forces that act on the build-up tending to make it to adhere to the surface can be traced back to the van der Waals forces and, possibly capillary force if a certain amount of liquid phase is present. On the other hand, the detaching mechanism is related to the component investigated: if the particle is deposited on a vane, the drag and the shearing force are the only forces that tend to detach the particle, if a rotor blade is investigated, the centrifugal forces must be considered as well. On top of that, the deposit evolves over time in what is called sintering. During this process, the single particles deposited can melt together forming necks. If the temperature is sufficiently high, these necks increase in size until the former pores among particles are completely filled. This process is of paramount importance if the effect of the applied forces on the deposit needs to be investigated. The amount of material detached is indeed strongly dependent on the tension exchanged within various layers that constitute the build-up. This article focuses on the prediction of the build-up evolution on an HPT nozzle. The sintering process is modeled and related to the resisting strength of the deposit: an increasing sintering time reduces the deposit porosity and thus increase its strength. In order to monitor the stability of the deposit, the balance among detaching and attaching forces is carried out. The evolution of the vane shape is taken into account by using a moving mesh technique.

Abstract:
Abstract The development system of the main hydrocarbon deposit of the Shtormove field was designed taking into account the change in reservoir rock properties in horizontal and vertical sections of the gas-saturated interval. Based on the results of core analyses and interpretation of logging data from exploration and appraisal wells, maximum porosity values were assigned to the top part of the deposit, with lower porosity values assigned closer to the gas-water contact area. The analyzed thin sections demonstrated vertical and subvertical fractures, as well as multiple pores and dissolution vugs. Most of the fractures occur in the top part of the gas-condensate deposit. Natural fractures in the rocks of the productive interval were confirmed by well testing using a steady flow analysis. Taking into account the determined reservoir properties’ distribution pattern in the gas-condensate deposit II, the wells were drilled in the top part of the deposit from a fixed offshore platform during the pilot development period. During this period, the estimated recoverable gas reserves’ values matched the values obtained using the volumetric estimation method. In the following years, in order to increase the gas recovery rate, the infilling production wells were drilled in the top part of the deposit. Based on the analysis of the development, it was determined that the addition of new wells had little effect on the performance of existing ones. As a result, attributable to infill drilling in the top part of the deposit, the annual gas production increased. Given the similarity of the geological model and distribution of reservoir properties, the implemented development system of the Shtormove field should be recommended for new development targets.

Abstract:
The composition and content of fluid inclusions in the main structural and technological types of vein quartz of the Fenkina-Lampi deposit were studied by gas chromatography. It is shown that H2O dominates (90–99%) in the gases composition released from quartz under heating to 1000°C, CO2, CO, N2 and hydrocarbon compounds contents are much less. Quartz is characterized by high gassing in the high-temperature region (600–1000°C) comparable to gassing in the low-temperature interval (100–600°C), which is a negative indicator of the quality of quartz as a raw material for high-quality glass melting. It is necessary to develop a special purification technology for this quartz, which will take into account the features of its saturation with gas-liquid inclusions.

Abstract:
Abstract A significant part of the hydrocarbon reserves in the Republic of Tatarstan belongs to heavy ultra-viscous oil. At the moment, due to the oil price rise, the development of these deposits is an actual task. In the recent decades, development planning has traditionally included the creation of three-dimensional reservoir models. The approaches that are also used are traditional and include data quality control, well log interpretation (determination of stratigraphy and calculation of reservoir properties), construction of a three-dimensional grid and filling it with properties. Meanwhile, the active development of information technology and artificial intelligence makes it possible to automate some of the routine processes. The purpose of this work is to create a chain of software algorithms combined under a digital platform for automating the process of constructing a geological model of ultra-viscous oil (hereinafter, UVO) deposits and calculating reserves on the example of the Republic of Tatarstan. The paper presents the general approaches that made it possible to solve part of the routine tasks of a geologist when constructing UVO deposit models. The tasks to be solved included the automation of stratigraphic boundaries definition, core-log matching, calculation of reservoir properties for wells, as well as determination of OWC position and placement of additional wells taking into account surface constraints. The approaches presented in this work are developed on the example of the UVO deposits of the Republic of Tatarstan, however, the principles used can be transferred to similar objects with the modification of the features used.

Abstract:
Abstract Impurities ingested in the fuel and air may deposit on the surface of turbine components during the operation of aero engines. The presence of such deposits will change the roughness of the blade surface and even seriously affect the aerodynamic performance of each turbine component and the overall safety of the engine. In this study, a new deposition prediction model was developed, which utilizes the User Defined Function (UDF) of Fluent and mesh reconstruction technique to simulate the long-term accumulation of deposition on a nozzle guide vane. Based on the critical viscosity model and the critical velocity model, considering the elasticity and viscosity of particles, some improvements to the model were proposed. The shear removal of individual particles and bulk deposits have been considered in the new deposition model. The simulation result of deposition distribution was verified by comparing with the experimental results obtained under the low temperature wax deposition. Its consistency and problems were also discussed. Subsequently, the increase of deposition thickness with time was shown. The effects of the detachment model and free flow temperature on the deposition distribution were studied. The results show that the deposition at the leading edge of turbine vanes increases fastest with time. The deposition distribution may be more accurate if the detachment model is taken into account. The amount of deposition on the vane pressure surface and stagnation line will increase with the increase of free flow temperature.

Abstract:
The catalytic generation of ammonia from a liquid urea solution is a critical process determining the performance of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems. Solid deposits on the catalyst surface from the decomposition of urea have to be avoided, as this leads to reduced system performance or even failure. At present, reactor design is often empirical, which poses a risk for costly iterations due to insufficient system performance. The presented research project proposed a performance prediction and modelling approach for SCR hydrolysis reactors generating ammonia from urea. Different configurations of hydrolysis reactors were investigated experimentally. Ammonia concentration measurements provided information about parameters influencing the decomposition of urea and the system performance. The evaporation of urea between injection and interaction with the catalyst was identified as the critical process driving the susceptibility to deposit formation. The spray of urea solution was characterised in terms of velocity distribution by means of particle-image velocimetry. Results were compared with theoretical predictions and calculation options for processes in the reactor were determined. Numerical simulation was used as an additional design and optimisation tool of the proposed model. The modelling approach is presented by a step-by-step method which takes into account design constraints and operating conditions for hydrolysis reactors.

Abstract:
Abstract The increased demand for smaller and more reliable electronic devices, pressures companies to tune and innovate the production methodologies, always aiming to decrease the production time while maintaining the products’ quality. In the manufacturing of a Printed Circuit Board - PCB, there are two main types of electronic components, namely, Surface-Mount-Devices and Through-Hole components. Both connections are achieved through soldering, an essential manufacturing process that greatly affects the quality of the final product, and may compromise the lifetime of the PCB. While SMD components are commonly soldered by a reflow process, TH components are generally soldered by a wave soldering process. However, a PCB is generally composed of both types of components. Since both processes are too different in nature, the manufacturing of the board requires two separated mounting lines which represent increased costs and production time. Taking this into account, the present study investigates the usage of the reflow solder printing to deposit the solder paste on through-hole apertures both experimentally and numerically. In general, the results were similar showing a tendency for the solder paste to deposit on the aperture’s right side. Nevertheless, the numerical model predicts a filling area greater (by 22%) than that verified experimentally.

Full text
Abstract:
The mechanics of snow friction are central to competitive skiing, safe winter driving and efficient polar sleds. For nearly 80 years, prevailing theory has postulated that self-lubrication accounts for low kinetic friction on snow: dry-contact sliding warms snow grains to the melting point, and further sliding produces meltwater layers that lubricate the interface. We sought to verify that self-lubrication occurs at the grain scale and to quantify the evolution of real contact area to aid modeling. We used high-resolution (15 μm) infrared thermography to observe the warming of stationary snow under a rotating polyethylene slider. Surprisingly, we did not observe melting at contacting snow grains despite low friction values. In some cases, slider shear failed inter-granular bonds and produced widespread snow movement with no persistent contacts to melt (μ < 0.03). When the snow grains did not move and persistent contacts evolved, the slider abraded rather than melted the grains at low resistance (μ < 0.05). Optical microscopy revealed that the abraded particles deposited in air pockets between grains and thereby carried heat away from the interface, a process not included in current models. Overall, our results challenge whether self-lubrication is indeed the dominant mechanism underlying low snow kinetic friction.

Downes, Jane, ed. Chalcolithic and Bronze Age Scotland: ScARF Panel Report. Society for Antiquaries of Scotland, September 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.184.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Building the Scottish Bronze Age: Narratives should be developed to account for the regional and chronological trends and diversity within Scotland at this time. A chronology Bronze Age Scotland: ScARF Panel Report iv based upon Scottish as well as external evidence, combining absolute dating (and the statistical modelling thereof) with re-examined typologies based on a variety of sources – material cultural, funerary, settlement, and environmental evidence – is required to construct a robust and up to date framework for advancing research.  Bronze Age people: How society was structured and demographic questions need to be imaginatively addressed including the degree of mobility (both short and long-distance communication), hierarchy, and the nature of the ‘family’ and the ‘individual’. A range of data and methodologies need to be employed in answering these questions, including harnessing experimental archaeology systematically to inform archaeologists of the practicalities of daily life, work and craft practices.  Environmental evidence and climate impact: The opportunity to study the effects of climatic and environmental change on past society is an important feature of this period, as both palaeoenvironmental and archaeological data can be of suitable chronological and spatial resolution to be compared. Palaeoenvironmental work should be more effectively integrated within Bronze Age research, and inter-disciplinary approaches promoted at all stages of research and project design. This should be a two-way process, with environmental science contributing to interpretation of prehistoric societies, and in turn, the value of archaeological data to broader palaeoenvironmental debates emphasised. Through effective collaboration questions such as the nature of settlement and land-use and how people coped with environmental and climate change can be addressed.  Artefacts in Context: The Scottish Chalcolithic and Bronze Age provide good evidence for resource exploitation and the use, manufacture and development of technology, with particularly rich evidence for manufacture. Research into these topics requires the application of innovative approaches in combination. This could include biographical approaches to artefacts or places, ethnographic perspectives, and scientific analysis of artefact composition. In order to achieve this there is a need for data collation, robust and sustainable databases and a review of the categories of data.  Wider Worlds: Research into the Scottish Bronze Age has a considerable amount to offer other European pasts, with a rich archaeological data set that includes intact settlement deposits, burials and metalwork of every stage of development that has been the subject of a long history of study. Research should operate over different scales of analysis, tracing connections and developments from the local and regional, to the international context. In this way, Scottish Bronze Age studies can contribute to broader questions relating both to the Bronze Age and to human society in general.
