These are movements and functions of the zoom presentation (display information, change of scale, global view). At this level, it is also possible to examine, by selection of the objects represented on the map (common facilities). This level is commonly known as Web mapping. The dynamic mapping is used when information is to be renewed or if the geographical extent of the area is large. In this case, a server handles in real-time updated database to provide users answers to their complaints. The functions proposed in this case are close to those of GIS software (acquisition, manipulation, management and processing of geographical data). In this chapter we will explore the possibility of integrating a dynamic mapping on the Web.

Earthquakes come first compared with other disasters concerning casualties and economic losses. Thousands of people need heath and logistic support after earthquakes. Therefore, legal authorities focus on finding best locations for logistics depots to reach the demand points as soon as possible. Linear and non-linear models are used to find depot locations. In this study, alternatively, geographic information system (GIS) is used to find the optimal locations of depots among candidates. A new model is introduced which cover the earthquake effects while estimating the vehicle speeds on road segments. Optimal locations of depots are found both with and without including the earthquake effects on vehicle speeds and travel times on the road segments in order to compare the results. A case study is applied for Bahçelievler town in Istanbul. Three depot locations are found among 21 candidate locations (facilities) for 62 estimated demand points. The results show that the depot locations are not necessarily the same whether the earthquake effects on travel times are included or not.

Infiltrative cardiomyopathies such as sarcoidosis and amyloidosis are characterized by interstitial deposition of pathological acellular or cellular tissue within the myocardium. Nuclear cardiac imaging plays an important role in the assessment of infiltrative cardiac disease through direct visualization of infiltrative substrates or inflammation, or both, by radiolabelled compounds. Cardiac involvement from sarcoidosis is rather common, and appears to worsen the overall prognosis of the disease. Radionuclide imaging using <sup>18</sup>F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography is a very sensitive method to detect cardiac sarcoidosis. Most importantly, it allows detecting early inflammatory stages previous to any morphological changes such as fibrosis or scar and thereby facilitates early preventive treatment. In order to suppress physiological FDG uptake and obtain good image quality, meticulous patient preparation including prolonged fasting, diet, and heparin load prior to FDG imaging is required. Cardiac amyloidosis is an infiltrative cardiomyopathy characterized by interstitial deposits of amyloid that can be visualized by scintigraphy using molecular-targeted radiolabelled compounds such as <sup>99m</sup>Tc-labelled pyrophosphate or 3,3-diphosphono-1,2-propanodicarboxylic acid (DPD). Because of the high sensitivity for transthyretin-type (ATTR) amyloidosis, scintigraphy may help to phenotype cardiac amyloidosis and separate ATTR from light-chain amyloidosis.

ABSTRACT A life cycle model was employed to identify the response of an adfluvial bull trout &lt;em&gt;Salvelinus confluentus&lt;/em&gt; population to chronic and catastrophic losses of subadults. The model simulates the bull trout population within Rimrock Lake, Washington, a reservoir on the Tieton River impounded by Tieton Dam. Subadult bull trout are entrained during summer water releases for irrigation, and the dam has no fish passage facilities to enable those fish to return upstream. Suitable spawning and rearing habitat is primarily upstream of the dam. Tagging studies of adult bull trout passing weirs in the two major tributaries to the reservoir were used to estimate model parameters for survival, maturity rates, reproductive capacity, and initial abundance. Sampling data and the deterministic model simulations indicated that the population was capable of rebounding quickly from intermittent catastrophic events. Resilience of the bull trout population resulted from high adult longevity and repeat spawning. The accumulation of mature adults across multiple age-classes led to egg deposition that fully seeded rearing capacity of the natal tributaries, even when several consecutive broods of juveniles exhibited poor survival. Catastrophic events simulated to entrain 50% of the subadults every 15 years caused a 40% reduction in adult abundance within 4 years of the event, followed by a full recovery to maximum production within 9 years. Even during the low point of adult abundance, 15 times more eggs were deposited than were needed to fully seed juvenile tributary habitat. Because the population was already producing juveniles at capacity, simulations for opening fish passage over Rimrock Dam showed that the sustained spawner population would increase by only two adults. However, simulations for expanded juvenile habitat by 14% indicated that the sustainable adult population would increase by 14%. Thus, habitat improvements that target juvenile rearing capacity appear to have the greatest potential to increase population size.

Abstract:
There is ample evidence that a progressive change in the intensity of an important environmental factor leads to the formation of zones or belt-like communities in which the plant species reflect a fairly distinct range of tolerance for that factor (Daubenmire 1968). Zonation has been defined as a sequence of vegetation in space and succession as a sequence of vegetation in time (McIntosh 1980). A zone is an area occupied by a plant community that is distinctly different from other zones and can be readily recognized by a change in dominant vegetation. Striking examples of zonation are found in salt marshes, mountain slopes and ponds because of soil salinity in salt marshes, decrease in temperature on mountain slopes and increase in water depth in ponds (Daubenmire 1968; Chapman 1976; Partridge and Wilson 1988). Similarly, it has long been known (Beck 1819) that sand dunes along sea coasts exhibit a zonation pattern extending from the beach to inland dunes. The zones are discrete and occur in parallel series with distinctly different species composition that is related to the ability of plant species to withstand the environmental factors prevailing in that zone (Doing 1985). Many later studies using transects from the shoreline to the inland dunes have confirmed that the taxa are not randomly distributed; they peak at definite distances from the beach (Oosting and Billings 1942; Boyce 1954; Martin 1959; Barbour 1978; Barbour et al. 1985). Succession in coastal dunes is an example of primary succession because the sandy material deposited on the shoreline by waves is inert. The term is generally used to denote a directional change in species composition and physiognomy of vegetation at the same site over time (Drury and Nisbet 1973). However, only the very early stages of dune succession can be observed during the life time of a plant ecologist and the later stages are usually inferred from plant communities represented on older sand dunes. It is hypothesized that the autogenic influence of early colonizers alters environmental conditions in the habitat and facilitates the establishment of new species better adapted to live in the altered habitat.

For transport from the supplier to the user (and back to the supplier when most of the source strength is exhausted) ^C o and I37Cs are shipped in special steel casks. These are designed to survive severe traffic accidents, fire, or other disasters. In order to minimize corrosion of cobalt pins or cesium capsules in the irradiation facility, the water of the source storage pool is constantly recirculated through a deionizer. A sensitive radiation monitor close to the deionizer is used to detect any radioactivity in case the water should be contaminated by a leak in the source. Nordion estimated in 1991 that 17 MCi of 60Co was in service worldwide, installed in 170 irradiators in 45 countries. Many of these facilities have been in operation for more than 20 years. They are mostly used for radiation sterilization of medical disposables, and only in some countries are they also used for irradiation of foodstuffs. Details on the design of various types of gamma irradiation facilities can be found in a number of review articles and book chapters ( -). Some of the earliest systematic studies on food irradiation were carried out with x-ray machines. X-rays are produced when matter is bombarded by electrons of sufficiently high kinetic energy. An x-ray tube (Fig. 5) consists basically of an evacuated glass bulb containing a wire filament which can be heated and opposite it a piece of metal, usually tungsten, which can be cooled. The filament is given a negative charge (cathode) and the metal a positive charge (anode, or anticathode). When the cathode filament is heated by passing an electric current through it, it emits electrons. When these hit the anode, x-rays are produced. The anode must be cooled because in a typical x-ray tube about 99% of the energy carried by the electrons may be converted to heat, and only about % appears in the form of." Many standards for this purpose have been issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials (31,32). The role of dosimetry in good radiation processing practice is described in the Recommended International Code of Practice for the Operation of Irradiation Facilities Used for the Treatment of Foods (see Appendix II) and in a series of Codes of Good Irradiation Practice issued by ICGFI (International Consultative Group on Food Irradiation) (see Appendix III). With some food items, such as whole eggs (33) and ground com (34), it may be possible to use the food itself as a dose meter. This will be discussed in more detail in Chapter 5. As mentioned earlier, electron beams, on the one hand, and gamma rays and x-rays, on the other hand, differ greatly in their ability to penetrate matter. This has important consequences for the dose distribution in the irradiated medium. Since many foods consist mostly of water, the penetration of radiation in water is shown in Figure 14. When an electron beam penetrates an aqueous medium the dose somewhat below the surface is higher than at the surface. This is due to the formation of secondary electrons which, because of their lower energy, are more effectively absorbed than the primary electrons. Also, scattering causes some secondary electrons to escape from the surface in the direction opposite to that of the beam of primary electrons. Thus a 10-MeV electron beam giving a dose of 10 kGy at the surface will deposit about 12.5 kGy at 2 cm below the surface. As more and more primary electrons lose their energy by interacting with water molecules, the absorbed dose decreases with increasing depth and at about 5 cm the limit of penetration is reached. In contrast, the dose delivered by gamma rays decreases continuously. The rate of decrease is faster with 137Cs gamma radiation than with 60Co gamma radiation. With x-rays it depends on the energy of the x-ray-producing electrons. For practical purposes the penetration of 5-MeV x-rays is comparable to that of 60Co gamma rays. Two-sided irradiation permits processing of thicker packages with more uni­ form dose distribution, as indicated in Figure 15. If the density of the irradiated medium is less than that of water, e.g., in fatty foods or in dehydrated or porous foods, the depth of penetration is correspondingly greater. The 10-MeV electron beam, which barely reaches a depth of 5 cm in water, will reach approximately 10 cm at a density of 0.5g/cm3.
