Myopia is common among premature infants and frequently persists into later life.1-6 The causes of myopia in this population are not certain, but the presence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) during the child's neonatal course and the retinal residua of ROP are associated with a higher incidence of myopia.7-12 The influence on the development of myopia of visual deprivation,13 central nervous system abnormalities, and other ocular disorders14, 15 that are more common in the premature population is not known.
