Abstract:
Abstract De koffer staat in de studio. Leeg. The suitcase stands empty in the studio. The thousand letters once crammed into it have been sorted by date, logged, read, some typed up and others photographed. Muriel Leysen, the owner of the case and its contents, died in Johannesburg in the 1970s. The father of the artist has been guardian of the suitcase for over forty years. Following his death the artist brought the case to Belgium. Now, in January a new letter has arrived. This one is from Muriel. 'The Suitcase' is a waystation in Wendy Morris's ongoing investigation into the role that letters might play in an artistic research practice.

Abstract:
The University of Connecticut Department of Mechanical Engineering has developed an industry recognized Senior Design Capstone course. The course provides fourth-year students the opportunity for a “major design experience in which they apply the principles of engineering, basic sciences, and mathematics to model, analyze, design, and realize physical systems, components or processes, and it prepares students to work professionally” [1]. The course is taught by a class instructor and is supported by the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering department at UConn. In the 2013–2014 academic year there were over 40 projects in the course. This paper presents the issues and challenges that students faced when working on a project for Koffee Karousel’s coin-operated K-Cup vending machine. Work on the project began with the problem statement, and was followed by the generation of possible solutions (accepting the most promising ones) and finally, choosing the ideal solution. The subsequent steps involved preliminary and detailed design, structural analysis, creating a 3D CAD representation, generating drawings, and producing a prototype. The prototype was then tested to verify its capabilities. The example of switching from a coin-operated design, with its limited potential use, to an electronically operated solution is described in this paper. The objective of this senior design project was to implement a credit card reader onto the original Koffee Karousel design. To accomplish this goal, a redesign of the Koffee-Karousel’s coin mechanism was required. An electrical engineering team of four students worked independently on the credit card and display setup, while a mechanical team worked on a lever mechanism and gears activated by the validation of a credit card. The implementation of this new mechanism included designing a replacement face, a couple of brackets for electrical hardware, and several new parts, including an actuator and a mini-stepper motor. In addition, students designed the new cam that would interface with stepper motor. Some parts were accepted from the current design of the lever and ejector. The new design still allows the customer to choose which K-Cup flavor they want by hand by operating a rotating knob at the top of the carousel, but no longer requires the user to trigger the ejector mechanism manually. Students tested the new mechanism to ensure it was not only efficient, but also worked properly. The stresses on each individual part were calculated for the first design iteration to ensure the new design would not yield or fail over time due to fatigue. The project and its challenges are described in this paper, as well as the students’ contributions to the design of the Karousel mechanisms, switching it from a purely mechanical to a mechatronik solution.

Abstract:
The problems of formation of the risk of a tsunami on the coast of the southern regions of the Far East Federal District. As the risk factors used features such as the relative position of the epicenters of tsunamigenic earthquakes and the coast, the underwater terrain coast, the degree of closeness of the studied bays, the presence or absence of wide beach and the first marine terraces, flowing into the characteristics of the studied coast estuaries. The factors subjected to expert estimates, taking into account their influence on the formation of the risk of a tsunami. The characteristics of the underwater topography, location in relation to the shores and bays of the epicenters of tsunamigenic earthquakes are estimated as zonal factors. Characteristics of marine terraces and river valleys are treated as local risk factors. For the first time for the coasts of Primorye and Khabarovsk area made of consequences of historical tsunamis: the presence of the devastation on the shores endured the tsunami waves from the open sea into the rivers and beaches ships, coast erosion, as well as descriptions of eyewitnesses. Characteristics of risk assessments are preceded by the WHO as areas of possible foci of tsunamigenic earthquakes, fault description and characteristics of buildings coasts. Risk assessment of the tsunami produces by the method proposed by G. Koff et al. The following characteristics was taken into account: the nature of the underwater coastal slope, exposure, banks in relation to the tsunami, the presence of the beach or I marine terrace, the presence of river valleys in the rear of the bay, the degree of openness of the bay. Overall, Nakhodka Bay and the Vostok Bay have the same performance tsunami -28,2 points. However, within these bays be provided with separate bays, with a higher risk assessment tsunami. Tsunami response coasts was made for these areas for the first time. Analysis of the materials allowed to identify the most tsunami zone, and to recommend the use of certain sections of the proposed development.

Abstract:
Abstract Human’s motion and its mechanisms had become interesting in the last years, where the medecine’s field search for rehabilitation methods for handicapped persons. Other fields, like sport sciences, professional or military world, search to distinguish profiles and ways to train them with specific purposes. Besides, recent findings in neuroscience try to describe these mechanisms from an organic point of view. Until now, different researchs had given a model about control motor that describes how the union between the senses’s information allows adaptable movements. One of this sense is the proprioception, the sense which has a quite big factor in the orientation and position of the body, its members and joints. For this reason, research for new strategies to explore proprioception and improve the theories of human motion could be done by three different vias. At first, the sense is analysed in a case-study where three groups of persons are compared in a controlled enviroment with three experimental tasks. The subjects belong to each group by the kind of sport they do: sedentary, normal sportsmen (e.g. athletics, swimming) and martial sportmen (e.g. karate, judo). They are compared thinking about the following hypothesis: “Martial Sportmen have a better proprioception than of the other groups’s subjects: It could be due to the type of exercises they do in their sports as empirically, a contact sportsman shows significantly superior motor skills to the members of the other two groups. The second via are records from encephalogram (EEG) while the experimental tasks are doing. These records are analised a posteriori with a set of processing algorithms to extract characteristics about brain’s activity of the proprioception and motion control. Finally , the study tries to integrate graphic tools to make easy to understand final scientific results which allow us to explore the brain activity of the subjects through easy interfaces (e.g. space-time events, activity intensity, connectivity, specific neural netwoks or anormal activity). In the future, this application could be a complement to assist doctors, researchers, sports center specialists and anyone who must improve the health and movements of handicapped persons.
