Abstract:

Abstract:
<p>This paper describes the work done to add hot standby replication functionality to the Apache Derby Database Management System. The Apache Derby project is a relational database implemented entirely in Java. Its key advantages are that it has a small footprint and it is based on the standard Java JDBC and SQL standards. It is also easy to install, deploy and use as well as it can be embedded in almost any light-weight Java application. By implementing a hot standby scheme in Apache Derby several features are added. The contents of the database is replicated at run time to another site providing online runtime backup. As the hot standby takes over on faults availability is added in that a client can connect to the hot standby after a crash. Thus the crash is masked from the clients. In addition to this, online upgrades of software and hardware can be done by taking down one database at the time. Then when the upgrade is completed the upgraded server is synchronized and back online with no downtime. A fully functional prototype of the Apache Derby hot standby scheme has been created in this project using logical logs, fail-fast takeovers and logical catchups after an internal up-to-crash recovery and reconnection. This project builds on the ideas that are presented in Derby: Write to Neighbor Mode.</p>

Murray, Megan Geneva. "The unladylike ladies of roller derby? : how spectators, players and derby wives do and redo gender and heteronormativity in all-female roller derby." Thesis, University of York, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2327/.

Full text
Abstract:
All-female roller derby is a rapidly growing full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, with a highly popularized punk, feminine, sexual and tough aesthetic. Utilising theories on the institution of heterosexuality, I conducted a qualitative study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. In order to approach this question, I analysed, firstly, thirty-eight interviews with spectators, and twelve with players about their interactions with spectators. Secondly, I interviewed twenty-six players about the phenomenon of “derby wives,” a term used to describe particular female friendships in roller derby. My findings relate the complex relationship between players and spectators by focusing on: (i) spectators’ interpretations of the dress, pseudonyms, and identities of players, as well as the ways in which they were actively involved in doing gender through their discussions of all-female, coed, and all-male roller derby; (ii) players’ descriptions of their interactions with spectators, family members, romantic partners, friends and strangers, regarding roller derby. Additionally, I address the reformulation of the role “wife” to meet the needs of female players within the community, and “derby wives” as an example of Adrienne Rich’s (1980) “lesbian continuum.” “Derby girls” are described as “super heroes” and “rock stars.” Their pseudonyms are believed to help them “transform” once they take to the track. Roller derby is seen as providing a venue to showcase women’s strength and new conceptualizations of femininity and motherhood. However, my findings also indicate that with its many challenges to gender stereotypes, heterosexuality and gender dualism are pervasive and evident in the sport. Even though derby has done much to expand gender expectations, these expectations have only been expanded; they are not diminished or eradicated. Despite this, through all-female roller derby, women are seen as acting in new, transformative ways.

Davey, Jennifer. "The political career of Lady Mary Derby, latterly the fifteenth Countess of Derby (1824-1900)." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.577680.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis charts the political career of Lady Mary Derby, latterly the fifteenth Countess of Derby. For almost four decades, from the 1850s to 1880s, Mary Derby played an active and influential role at the centre of government. This thesis explores her involvement in several significant political events of the mid-nineteenth century, including the efforts to form a fusion government in the 1860s, the passing ofthe Second Reform Act in 1867, the formation ofDisraeli's Cabinet in 1874, the Eastern Crisis of 1875-1878, and the appointment of the fifteenth Earl of Derby (her second husband) to Gladstone's Cabinet in 1882. It is the contention of this thesis, that our understanding of these events is enhanced, reshaped and altered by treating the Countess as seriously as her contemporaries did. Utilising previously unused or under-explored manuscript collections, the thesis aims to place Lady Derby in her context as a female politician, but it recognises the difficulty of recreating some of the spaces in which female politics took place: Cabinet gossip leaves epistolary traces; Saturday night balls for a thousand guests does not. The thesis uses feminist theory as a hermeneutical key to unlock some of the doors which remain closed to us, but it insists on grounding it in archival realities and measuring it against them. By exploring Lady Derby's political activities during the mid-nineteenth century, this thesis places her alongside traditional stalwarts of nineteenth century politics, for example, Disraeli, Gladstone, and Salisbury, and explores how a woman who had neither the vote nor the opportunity to hold office, was considered their political equal. The career explored here is important not simply in its own right, as showing how a woman could operate in the sphere of 'high' politics, but also as a case study in a wider argument about the need to reintegrate aristocratic women into political history.

Abstract:

Trotta, Kristina Ann. "Socioeconomics of the Lionfish Derby Fishery." NSUWorks, 2014. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/occ_stuetd/21.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout the western North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans/miles) have established dense populations, greatly impacting their host environments. Lionfish tournaments have been an important tool for resource managers and other concerned stakeholders in suppressing local populations of lionfish. Tournaments can also bring economic benefits to the communities where they are held, despite this not being the primary purpose. Five derby events in Florida and the Bahamas were surveyed and 119 participants were interviewed on site, using a survey asking them to describe (1) the lionfish derby experience; (2) non-derby related lionfish removal effort; (3) derby expenditures; and (4) personal characteristics. Response rates of event participants were between 35% and 82%. Respondents spent an average of approximately $820 per person, potentially creating a net economic benefit to the communities where they were held. Total expenditures reported ranged from $5,000 to over $60,000 per tournament, with events drawing a high number of out of town participants reporting the highest amounts spent. Participants surveyed were largely males who resided in Florida and had a reported income of over $100,000 with 29% indicating an annual income of more than $200,000. In addition, lionfish tournaments have the effect of educating the public about the lionfish invasion, including greater targeting and consumption of lionfish, showing that tournaments are effective at their conservation mission as well as contributing to the economy of their host community.

Toews, Rebecca, and Rebecca Toews. "Derby Dames and Femme Fatales: A Qualitative Critical Analysis of Empowerment, Consumption and Representation in Roller Derby." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12449.

Full text
Abstract:
With the help of such performers as Drew Barrymore and Oscar winner Ellen Page, roller derby as a pastime and athletic competition is becoming more than a subcultural phenomenon. Roller derby holds an important symbolic role and social importance for participants. Through the use of ethnography, participant observation and discourse analysis, this thesis fills a void in subcultural and feminist studies by infusing a political economic argument to existing research. This study shows that through the organizations "DIY" structure, the sport may overcome the de-politicization and commodification of feminism that is common in the third wave, "girl power" trend. Still, while empowerment and agency are important to participants, male hegemonic views of femininity and sex appeal may create a culture of consumerism. This study has implications for feminist researchers and sheds light on situations in which apparent feminist empowerment belies a consumerist agenda.
