Modern sea turtle long bone osteohistology has been surprisingly well-studied, as it is used to understand sea turtle growth and the timing of life history events, thus informing conservation decisions. Previous histologic studies reveal two distinct bone growth patterns in extant sea turtle taxa, with Dermochelys (leatherbacks) growing faster than the cheloniids (all other living sea turtles). Dermochelys also has a unique life history compared to other sea turtles (large size, elevated metabolism, broad biogeographic distribution, etc.) that is likely linked to bone growth strategies. AbstractChromosomes of Dermochelys coriacea were prepared from kidney, spleen and lung cells of three neonates hatched from eggs incubated at 26.5 ± 0.5° C (a temperature yielding 100% phenotypic males). A study of the karyotype shows a diploid number of 56 chromosomes consisting of 14 meta- and submetacentrics, 10 telo- and subtelocentrics, and 32 microchromosomes. I have quantified the energy requirements of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) throughout development, and examined growth rates, resource requirement and availability, and anthropogenic threats from the commercial fishery. I demonstrated that the use of the doubly labeled water (DLW) method to determine field metabolic rate in marine turtles is constrained by low metabolic (MR) and high water turnover rates (Chapter 2). For fed and fasted turtles, water turnover rates were 9.57±1.33% and 6.14±0.65% TBW day−¹1 and MR (from respirometry) was 28.66±5.31 kJ kg−¹ day−¹ and 13.77±1.49 kJ

A beach conservation programme protecting nesting loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) sea turtles in South Africa was started in 1963. As initial numbers of nesting females were low for both species (107 loggerheads and 24 leatherbacks) it was proposed that the protection of eggs, hatchlings and nesting females along the nesting beach would induce population growth and prohibit local extinction. Abstract:
Introdução: O Instituto Verdeluz é uma ONG ambientalista que atua na cidade de Fortaleza e região metropolitana, contendo 4 projetos. Um destes projetos é o GTAR, que atua na pesquisa e conservação com as cinco espécies de tartarugas marinhas que ocorrem no litoral brasileiro, sendo elas Tartaruga-Verde (Chelonia Mydas), Tartaruga-de-Pente (Eretmochelys imbricata), Tartaruga-de-Couro (Dermochelys coriácea), Tartaruga-Oliva (Lepidochelys olivácea) e Tartaruga-Cabeçuda (Caretta caretta).
