Abstract:
Models to forecast slug populations make assumptions about growth and mortality in response to environmental factors. To refine these models, the growth trajectories and survival of Deroceras reticulatum, a worldwide pest, hatching in spring and autumn were compared at three rearing temperatures (ambient, 12 °C and 15 °C). Deroceras reticulatum reared under identical conditions showed great variation in growth and strong bimodality in growth rates. At all rearing temperatures, growth was influenced by hatching season; in all cases, fast growers dominated in autumn and slow growers dominated in

The snail Triodopsis multilineata (Say) and the slugs Deroceras laeve (Müller) and Deroceras reticulatum (Müller) were successfully reared using inorganic vermiculite as a substrate and carrots and lettuce as food. Discus cronkhitei (Newcomb), Vallonia gracilicosta Reinhardt, Vallonia pulchella (Müller), Vertigo gouldii (Binney), and Zonitoides arboreus (Say) were reared on various types of organic leaf-litter substrates that simulated their natural environments. Triodopsis multilineata was the gastropod most easily reared and maintained.

Abstract:
Malformations in animals have long been known. In gastropod, natural and induced malformations are mentioned in different systems and in ocular tentacles, mainly linked to cases of parasitism and exposure to pollutants (molluscicides and chemicals). In this study we present a new malformation not documented in the ocular tentacles of slug Deroceras reticulatum that could be due to the action of pesticides. This malformation in D. reticulatum is the first malformation to be mentioned for South America in nursery gardens.

Deroceras reticulatum is a misanthropic European species spread widely throughout South America. At the moment this species is considered a 'pest' in direct sowing such as maize, soybean, sunflower, wheat, alfalfa and clovers, among others. AbstractEntomopathogenic nematodes use a range of cues released by insects to locate hosts but there has been no research on how the slug-parasitic nematode, Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, finds potential hosts. We exposed P. hermaphrodita to a range of cues associated with the highly susceptible host Deroceras reticulatum. Cues included foot and mantle mucus and faeces from live D. reticulatum and volatile cues released from this slug. We also compared the attractiveness of live and dead D. reticulatum, and the attractiveness of infected and non-infected D. reticulatum. Phasmarhabditis hermap

Abstract:
Deroceras reticulatum (Müller) is the most destructive slug pest of arable crops in Britain. Control on a field scale relies heavily on molluscicide pellets. These are often only partially effective; considerable economic loss and collateral damage still occur. More effective targeting of pellets will depend on accurate predictions of damage severity through a better understanding of population dynamics, reliable estimates of surface activity and behavioural studies to evaluate current control strategies. Lifecycle parameters of D. reticulatum were studied. There was considerable variation in

Slugs are important pests in many agricultural crops and potential biological control agents are being studied as an alternative to molluscicide application. The role of the carabids Pterostichus madidus (Fabricius) and Nebria brevicollis (Fabricius) as predators of the slug Deroceras reticulatum (MUller) was examined in the laboratory. These generalist beetle species were only capable of killing small, healthy slugs (<0.1 ig) as they were unable to overcome the defence mucus production of larger slugs. Dead slugs were scavenged in preference to killing healthy slugs. The relatively high propo

Significant developments in gastropod endocrinology since 1969 are reviewed. The anatomy of the CNS, distribution of nerves and the general plan of the vascular system in Deroceras reticulatu m is described. The central ganglia are encased in a thick perineural sheath, a matrix of collagen in which muscle fibres, blood vessels, granular cells, pigment cells and vesicular cells are embedded. The fine structure of the blood vessels supplying the CNS suggests that metabolic requirements reach the neurones by diffusion from these vessels. Dorsal Body tissue (DBT) occurs on the cerebral ganglia and
