Full textThis work aims to study the atmospheres of annealing furnaces at Gerdau AEB - Charqueadas, in order to evaluate their conditions, to elucidate the main reactions involved and suggest possible improvements to the process. Measurements of carbon monoxide concentrations formed during heat-treating cycles have been carried out for three types of steel: SAE 52100, SAE 10B22 and SAE 10B30. The evolution of carbon monoxide was compared for different steel compositions, areas exposed to the treating atmosphere and nitrogen purge rates. The most effective nitrogen purge regime was the continuous one during all cycle. Intermittent purges are detrimental to the process. More over, as for SAE 52100 steel, scale and steel surface transformations after the heat-treating cycles have been studied by means of the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The presence of metallic iron layers imbedded in the scale of SAE 52100 was detected, indicating that oxides are reduced during the process. A commercial software was used to simulate the main thermodynamic reactions proposed for the process. The carbon dioxide formed by the scale reduction reactions is responsable for decarburizing of steel during the spheroidizing cycles.

Sabe-se da literatura que o envelhecimento magnético está associado à precipitação de carbetos e/ou nitretos, que afetam a movimentação de paredes de domínios magnéticos, aumentando a coercividade e a energia dissipada em forma de calor. Com o objetivo de avaliar a influência do tratamento térmico descarbonetante no envelhecimento de aços elétricos, três tipos de aço GNO de baixa eficiência foram tratados em dois ciclos de tratamento diferentes: um em atmosfera úmida, outro em atmosfera seca. Em seguida, os aços já tratados foram submetidos a um tratamento térmico de envelhecimento magnético acelerado, em três temperaturas diferentes: 190ºC, 210ºC e 230ºC. Foi mostrado que apenas dois dos aços tratados a seco apresentaram envelhecimento, e que as perdas histeréticas foram as que apresentaram maior aumento. Com o auxílio do método de Arrhenius, foi estimado o tempo necessário para que os aços elétricos atingissem o máximo nível de perdas em condições normais de operação de um compressor hermético.
From literature it is known that magnetic aging is associated with the precipitation of carbides and/or nitrides. These particles affect the magnetic domain wall's movement, increasing the coercivity and the losses. In order to evaluate the influence of heat treatment in aging, three types of low efficiency GNO electrical steel were treated in two different cycles, one in a wet atmosphere, the other in a dry atmosphere. After these treatments the steels have been subjected to three different aging temperatures: 190°C, 210°C and 230ºC. It was shown that only two steel from the dry cycle had aging, and the hysteresis losses showed the greatest increase. Using the Arrhenius method, we estimated how long the electrical steels can work under normal operation temperature of a hermetic compressor until reach their maximum losses level.

Full textAnnealing applied by the motors plants that are made on the semi processed electrical steels without an exact and precisious control of the decarburization on the lamination can brings undesirable results on the grain size coarsening and as a result an increasing on the core losses with a significant depreciation on the efficiency of the electrical motors. Most of the domestic motors fabrics make use of this kind of electrical steel and they do on their process the final annealing on continuous furnaces with atmospheres based on nitrogenium with around 5 until 10% of hidrogeniun and a little fraction of water vapor enough to generate an atmosphere that reacts to the carbon from the steel, eliminating it. If this decarburization is not been made sucessfully there will be an effective loss on the motor efficiency due the incresing on the core losses. Commercial samples from different steels with several carbon contents were choosen to evaluate the influence of carbon content, strain grade, time and furnace atmosphere on the grain size coarsening and core losses. It was effetived vacumn and decarburizing annealing. Core losses and grain size measurements were made in addition to the evaluation of the microstructure to determine this influence. It was verified that on the vacumn annealing, even on differents strain reductions grades, the samples with initial carbon content bigger than 300 ppm, had a meaninfull late on the grain size increase. On the situation that do not occurred a significative increase on the grain size the core losses presented undesirable high values. On the other hand samples without strain did not presented a significative increase on the grain size even with decarburization during the annealing. It was still verified that the columnar grain formation occur on specific strain grades, on decarburizing annealing and to more than 300 ppm carbon content steels. In addition where there is a fast heating rate until the annealing temperature.
