Abstract:
Abstract This essay discusses how and to what effect Weird and New Weird fiction use description in unique and genre-defining ways. Using H. P. Lovecraft’s “The Call of Cthulhu” and China Miéville’s The City & The City as examples, it shows how the Weird relegates a comparatively large part of the text to description and attempts to elicit dread as an aesthetic effect. The essay argues that the Weird breaks with the traditional use of description by employing formally realist tendencies which it defies functionally, and by combining over-description with the failure to describe, whereas the New Weird is more concise in its use of description, ties it more closely to the narrative, and is less reliant on descriptive failures. Both the Weird and the New Weird demand more active reader participation in their creation of aesthetic illusion, which they encourage through the frames they create around their descriptions, thus preparing readers for the potential of aesthetic distance in the reception process and diminishing its effect. The analysis emphasizes the potential of description to be more than a subordinate to the narrative mode and to be a central component in the formation of a text’s implied worldview.

Abstract:
The article discusses the issues regarding the essence of what the reality referring to typical childlike situations similar to sacrifice, and the ways the names and descriptions of behavior types differ from these types as per se. The description of lexical meanings via the semantic metalanguage and the description of typical linguistic and other cultural forms based on prototypes do not contradict each other, since they solve different problems. Consequently, generic descriptions of typical childlike situations comparable to sacrifice are lexical meanings of the short names of typical situations, constructed in metalanguage on the basis of an intuitive understanding of their similarity, existing as artefacts of text analysis, while the typical situations and forms of childlike behavior comparable to sacrifice are real-life objective forms of behavioral situations and biological, cultural and social predispositions to certain typical forms of behavior.

Abstract Aspheric surfaces, in particular rotationally invariant surfaces, can be described according to the ISO standard 10110 Part 12 as sagitta functions of the surface coordinates. Usually, such functions are standardized as a combination of conic terms and power series or orthogonal polynomials. Similar functions are applied for surface forms, which are not rotationally invariant as cylindric and toric surfaces. In the following, different forms of describing aspheric surfaces as given in the standard as well as other forms will be presented and compared in an overview, and their special features will be discussed.

The proposed interpretation fits the rest of the description of the ‘divine method’, preserves the Forms’ unmixed nature and the consistency of the Philebus.

In my paper, I argue that some forms or instances of the balcony can be considered heterotopias. Drawing upon Foucault`s (1967) “heterotopology”, I approach the ways in which balconies entail multi- layered encodings of meaning in places that are both openings and also “conceal curious exclusions” (Foucault, 1967/2008, p. 21). Firstly, I review Foucault’s groundwork and several theoretical developments regarding heterotopias. Next, I use Geertz’s (1973) “thick description” in order to offer a brief account of three forms of the balcony, which could be placed within Foucault’s systematic description of heterotopias.

Abstract:
Abstract The Somali verb is traditionally presented as having a quite large number of inflectional paradigms with, e.g., special negative forms and several kinds of subordinate clause forms. The complexity of traditional descriptions tends to overshadow important generalisations that would otherwise reflect a relative simplicity of the Somali verb system. The most important reasons for the abundance of paradigms are that forms, periphrastic constructions and their functions are not systematically differentiated, but also that the tonal accent and case marking are treated as parts of the inflection, instead of phrasal marking of syntactic or pragmatic functions. The aim of this article is therefore to suggest a simplified analysis and to define the minimal set of synthetic forms and analytical constructions that are necessary for the description of Somali verb inflection as well as the basic syntactic functions of these forms and constructions.

The article presents a detailed description of the transformation of the terrain relief due to long-lasting underground and surface mining activity in the Wielka Kopa massif at Rudawy Janowickie (the Western Sudetes mountains). It includes both the anthropogenic forms and secondary transformations of these forms due to natural land-shaping processes, ongoing after mining had been discontinued. The location deserves special attention, as it shows particularly significant mining-induced relief transformations, whose scale can be compared to those of the Walbrzych hard coal basin and the Turoszow lignite basin. The presented object is also an important historical heritage and deserves special attention due to its high research, didactic and tourism potential. The article offers a description of the characteristics and a classification of the anthropogenic forms in the area of Wielka Kopa, which are hoped to serve as an aid in planning future actions related to the revitalization of the area and also as an example for future descriptions of other closed mining facilities.

An analysis of descriptions of objects, human figures and landscapes by pupils from form 4–6 of primary schoolIn the article the author analyses three kinds of descriptions created during Polish language classes in forms 4–6 — description of an object, of a human figure and of a landscape. She explores the structure of the pupils’ texts, taking into account, first of all, the order of description elements and the level of detail. Her analysis demonstrates that achieving the right level of detail is difficult for pupils and depends to a large extent on how instructions are formulated and whether the pupils can see they object they are describing. When it comes to the order of description elements, the most frequently used arrangement is hierarchical, complemented by an arrangement best suited to the object being described, e.g. vertical for a description of a human figure or horizontal for a description of a landscape. The author’s research confirms that the ability to create such texts require practice and in-depth analysis of one’s surroundings.

Abstract:
Abstract The form and formlessness of histories, regions, races, ballads, fictions, lists, characters, and mountains are among the topics of concern in Colson Whitehead's John Henry Days, and they pose a real challenge to conveying what this novel is like. Caroline Levine's Forms: Whole, Rhythm, Hierarchy, Network advocates considering forms in terms of their affordances, “the potential uses or actions latent in materials and designs” (6). This depends, however, on the reliable identification of forms in a particular text, activity, or material; and the critical response to John Henry Days gives us evidence that, while we can analyze forms the novel deploys and contains, it remains a challenge to identify the novel's form as a whole. In a different vein, Heather Love's work on description is explicitly concerned with “forms of analysis,” but not with the analysis of form per se. The present examination of John Henry Days attempts to bridge such valuable conversations about form and description. This article argues that as John Henry Days grapples with describing forms that constantly remake themselves, it takes a position akin to science and technology studies scholar Michael Lynch's theoretical agnosticism with respect to capital-O Ontology. Refusing anything like a full-blown theory of form, John Henry Days both practices and advocates provisional taxonomy—touching and moving on—as a way of knowing its ever-changing material. This article's analysis of the describer's nightmare is thus a case study for Lynch's claim that “particular descriptions—including descriptions of ontologies—can make sense, apparently even to others who do not share our grand theories.”

Abstract:
Words used to describe behavior at work have strong emotional and behavioral implications for those being judged by them. Words used to describe work behavior in assessment of work activities express measurement of performance on appraisal forms as objective or subjective. Work descriptors taken from performance appraisal forms from 47 of 100 hospitals, 35 of 480 management textbooks, and 22 of 150 journal articles were placed in three levels of objective to subjective for frequency of use. More work descriptors were subjective than objective. Work descriptors from journals presented many subjective traits but used more objective than subjective traits while textbooks included many subjective traits as objective descriptors. Use of subjective work descriptors in the journals and textbooks encourages subjective assessment of workers. To be objective performance appraisals must use objective words to describe and assess work in graphic rating forms.

Abstract:
Behaviorally descriptive adjectives and personality trait terms have been analyzed periodically by many psychological researchers and practitioners during the last half of this century. This analysis of personality-descriptive adjectives and terms has led to the development of several widely used adjective checklists for personality assessment and the postulation and the construct validation of several personality models. Foremost among the adjective checklists have been the 1948 Activity Vector Analysis (AVA), the 1950 Adjective Check List (ACL), and the more recent Personality Adjective Check List (PACL) in 1987. The first descriptions and reports of their developmental and validation research appeared in the professional refereed literature, respectively by Clarke in 1956, Gough in 1960, and Strack in 1987. The ACL contains 300 adjectives, various forms of the AVA contain 81 to 87 adjectives, and the PACL contains 153 adjectives. The dimensionality of personality models and the number of scales interpreted in the protocols from these instruments have either remained stable as in the case of AVA (4 dimensions, 6 scales) or have been quite variable over time. For example, the ACL was originally 5-dimensional with 6 scales being interpreted. Currently, the ACL yields 37 interpretable scales, and the PACL perhaps a 5-factor structure.

The main aim of this paper is to present the formal description of the Multilayered Reaction-Diffusion Machine (MRDM, an extension of a previously introduced RDM, Reaction-Diffusion Machine) which can be seen as a generalization of Cellular Automata since it relaxes some constraints on uniformity, locality and closure. The MRDM offers a formal and computational environment where to describe, represent and simulate coordination models which explicitly require spatial features to be considered and integrates different forms of interaction. The paper is divided into two main parts. In the first one, the formal description of the MRDM is presented. In the second part the MRDM is put in relation with deterministic Turing machines; moreover we show how the MRDM, under determined constraints, collapses on a traditional CA.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work constitutes a reassessment of the role of potential-flow analyses in describing alluvial-bed instability. To facilitate the analyses, a new potential-flow description of unsteady alluvial flow is presented, with arbitrary phase lags between local flow conditions and sediment transport permitted implicitly in the flow model. Based on the present model, the explicit phase lag between local sediment transport rate and local flow conditions adopted for previous potential-flow models is shown to be an artificial measure that results in model predictions that are not consistent with observed flow system behaviour. Previous potential-flow models thus do not provide correct descriptions of alluvial flows, and the understanding of bed-wave mechanics inferred based upon these models needs to be reassessed. In contrast to previous potential-flow models, the present one, without the use of an explicit phase lag, predicts instability of flow systems of rippled or dune-covered equilibrium beds. Instability is shown to occur at finite growth rates for a range of wavelengths via a resonance mechanism occurring for surface waves and bed waves travelling at the same celerity. In addition, bed-wave speeds are predicted to decrease with increasing wavelength, and bed waves are predicted to grow and move at faster rates for flows of larger Froude numbers. All predictions of the present potential-flow model are consistent with observations of physical flow systems. Based on the predicted unstable wavelengths for a given alluvial flow, it is concluded that bed waves are not generated from plane bed conditions by any potential-flow instability mechanism. The predictions of instability are nevertheless consistent with instances of accelerated wave growth occurring for flow systems of larger finite developing waves. Potential-flow description of alluvial flows should, however, no longer form the basis of instability analyses describing bed-form (sand-wavelet) generation from flat bed conditions.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the problem of person tube (a sequence of bounding boxes which encloses a person in a video) retrieval using a natural language query. Different from images in person re-identification (re-ID) or person search, besides appearance, person tube contains abundant action and information. We exploit a 2D and a 3D residual networks (ResNets) to extract the appearance and action representation, respectively. To transform tubes and descriptions into a shared latent space where data from the two different modalities can be compared directly, we propose a Multi-Scale Structure Preservation (MSSP) approach. MSSP splits a person tube into several element-tubes on average, whose features are extracted by the two ResNets. Any number of consecutive element-tubes forms a sub-tube. MSSP considers the following constraints for sub-tubes and descriptions in the shared space. 1) Bidirectional ranking. Matching sub-tubes (resp. descriptions) should get ranked higher than incorrect ones for each description (resp. sub-tube). 2) External structure preservation. Sub-tubes (resp. descriptions) from different persons should stay away from each other. 3) Internal structure preservation. Sub-tubes (resp. descriptions) from the same person should be close to each other. Experimental results on person tube retrieval via language description and other two related tasks demonstrate the efficacy of MSSP.

This contribution examines the integration of the notion of aspect in the grammar of European languages, especially in Spanish grammar writing. The hesitant integration of compound verb forms into the description of the conjugation of Romance verbs and the peculiar naming of these verb forms appear to be due to two causes until the 18th century. On the one hand, the authors of the grammars transposed Latin grammar and its terms to the vernacular languages. On the other hand, the authors considered the terms only from a semasiological perspective, deriving the functions of the verb forms from the meaning of the terms.

Abstract My thesis describes how methods from Formal Concept Analysis can be used for constructing and extending description logic ontologies. In particular, it is shown how concept inclusions can be axiomatized from data in the description logics $$\mathcal {E}\mathcal {L}$$ E L , $$\mathcal {M}$$ M , $$\textsf {Horn}$$ Horn -$$\mathcal {M}$$ M , and $$\textsf{Prob}\text{-}\mathcal {E}\mathcal {L}$$ Prob - E L . All proposed methods are not only sound but also complete, i.e., the result not only consists of valid concept inclusions but also entails each valid concept inclusion. Moreover, a lattice-theoretic view on the description logic $$\mathcal {E}\mathcal {L}$$ E L is provided. For instance, it is shown how upper and lower neighbors of $$\mathcal {E}\mathcal {L}$$ E L concept descriptions can be computed and further it is proven that the set of $$\mathcal {E}\mathcal {L}$$ E L concept descriptions forms a graded lattice with a non-elementary rank function.

The product in this study is a learning resource in the form of the comic book ‘Kisah Teladan bersama Punakawan’ for fourth-grade students at a state elementary school in Central Java. This is a modified Research and Development (RD) study from Borg and Gall's (1983) development mode designed with a qualitative research method. Based on the feasibility validation of assessment learning resources from six validators, material experts, language experts, and media experts, the book was suitable for improving students' writing skills in the description text. It could be used as an additional learning resource for Indonesian subjects to improve students' skills in writing description text inspired by the Punakawan wayang stories.

Abstract:
This paper examines first steps in identifying and compiling human-generated corpora for the purpose of determining the quality of computer-generated video descriptions. This is part of a study whose general ambition is to broaden the reach of accessible audiovisual content through semi-automation of its description for the benefit of both end-users (content consumers) and industry professionals (content creators). Working in parallel with machine-derived video and image description datasets created for the purposes of advancing computer vision research, such as Microsoft COCO (Lin et al., 2015) and TGIF (Li et al., 2016), we examine the usefulness of audio descriptive texts as a direct comparator. Cognisant of the limitations of this approach, we also explore alternative human-generated video description datasets including bespoke content description. Our research forms part of the MeMAD (Methods for Managing Audiovisual Data) project, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme.

Abstract:
In addition to necrosis and apoptosis, the two forms of cell death that have been known for many decades, other non-apoptotic forms of cell death have been discovered, many of which also play a role in tumors. Starting with the description of autophagy more than 60 years ago, newer forms of cell death have become important for the biology of tumors, such as ferroptosis, pyroptosis, necroptosis, and paraptosis. In this review, all non-apoptotic and oncologically relevant forms of programmed cell death are presented, starting with their first descriptions, their molecular characteristics, and their role and their interactions in cell physiology and pathophysiology. Based on these descriptions, the current state of knowledge about their alterations and their role in gliomas will be presented. In addition, current efforts to therapeutically influence the molecular components of these forms of cell death will be discussed. Although research into their exact role in gliomas is still at a rather early stage, our review clarifies that all these non-apoptotic forms of cell death show significant alterations in gliomas and that important insight into understanding them has already been gained.

Abstract:
Abstract The unprecedented growth of audiovisual translation practices in the creative industries has boosted the role of creativity which has taken centre stage and become the emblem of global cultural policies. The study addresses the role of creativity in the digital space of Netflix as a means of cross-cultural mediation and communication, and as a multidimensional tool in audio description (AD), in order to provide the end-users (the blind and visually impaired audiences) of digital audiovisual products with participatory and engaging forms of access to the audiovisual ‘planet’. The aim is to investigate whether and how creativity is used to transmit culture-specific references (CSRs) from a translation perspective within a highly discussed TV series streamed on Netflix. To do so, the rendering of the most significant CSRs in the Korean Netflix series Squid Game (SG) as transferred into the English and Italian ADs will be examined.

Application of higher order forms for the description of electromechanical energy convertersThe purpose of that paper is to develop of unified equations of electromechanical energy converters accounting for the magnetic non-linearity of the main magnetic circuit of a converter. The concept of applying higher order forms of winding currents for the description of the co-energy function is introduced in order to derive the structure of converter equations via mathematical analysis. Also, another concept of equivalent magnetizing currents is applied to determine the higher order forms for selected converters designs. The structure of circuital equations for converters with multiple windings has been unified by means of the introduction of matrices of dynamic and nonlinear inductances following the higher order forms of the co-energy function.

Abstract:
The physical description of dosage forms is one of the most important considerations in avoiding patient confusion and minimizing medication errors. This study aimed to determine the quality and accuracy of the physical descriptions in patient information leaflets (PILs). This cross-sectional study constituted a total of 200 drugs and PILs that were randomly selected, by pharmacy students, from Al-Dawaa community pharmacies in the Hail region of Saudi Arabia, from January 2021 to July 2021. The drugs and PILs were thoroughly evaluated in accordance with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) guidelines for PILs. The accuracy screening of the total solid dosage forms (capsules + tablets) revealed that 45% showed complete accuracy and compliance, 1.5% showed poor accuracy and compliance, and 53% showed no accuracy and no compliance with the GCC guidelines and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) guidelines. In the frequency test, color, shape, and imprints accounted for 95.6%, 79.1%, and 73.6%, respectively. However, the size of the dosage form was the least (2.2%) used physical description feature. These findings recommend pharmaceutical companies to pay more attention to the written physical description in their PILs. Additionally, the process of PIL approval should be optimized, evaluated, and updated systematically to ensure that they contain the essential information.

Abstract:
This article presents the general principles for the inflectional description of verbal multiword expressions in Bulgarian. Two main criteria are applied: the maintenance of the relation to the inflectional description of simple words in Bulgarian and the presentation of the minimal grammatical information necessary for a standardised description of the forms of verbal multiword expressions. The paper also provides a brief outline of the formalism used to define local grammars, which are compiled into finite-state transducers that recognise and generate the forms of verbal multiword expressions, along with the associated grammatical information.

Abstract:
A simple way to derive physically based functional forms for approximate description of thermodynamic properties of gases is presented. The polynomials in transformed variables obtained are intended for fast industrial calculations. The approach is applied on eleven thermodynamic dependencies with pairs of independent variables most frequently encountered in turbine calculations. These functional forms were originally derived for the description of steam properties, but they are equally applicable to any gas in adequate region of state parameters. Approximation function for the dependence T(h, s) of steam is presented as an example including the values of 18 fitted parameters.
