Abstract:
PurposeThis study aims to analyse current practices and cooperation between the Turkish university libraries related to cataloguing processes and present cataloguing librarians’ evaluations about clarity and comprehensiveness of the given information in library catalogues.Design/methodology/approachIn line with the literature review, a Web-based questionnaire was developed concerning the cataloguing practices implemented at university libraries in Turkey. The questionnaire was submitted to 316 cataloguing librarians. In all, 104 cataloguing librarians from 61 different libraries responded to the survey. The collected data were analysed through descriptive statistics. The responses given to some open-ended questions were assessed with respective expressions presented verbatim in the study and some of them visualised via VOSViewer software.FindingsThe findings reflect that analysed university libraries implement different cataloguing processes. It is seen that some libraries use the necessary systems and services related to cataloguing and classification while others use individual solutions without using such systems and services. Findings reveal that there is cooperation between the analysed libraries about sharing catalogue records. In this regard, it is understood that cataloguing librarians mostly prefer transferring catalogue records from the catalogues of university libraries they trusted. Findings also indicate that analysed librarians think that the descriptive information provided via Online Public Access Catalogues are in moderate level in terms of clarity and comprehensibility.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the existing literature of a limited number of relevant studies by establishing the baseline pertaining to cataloguing processes undertaken at university libraries in Turkey.

Abstract:
Research indicates that feedback given to teacher trainees is often vague and incomplete. Frequently the feedback fails to provide specific strategies designed to improve subsequent teaching performances. This investigation developed a taxonomy of feedback strategies based on the content of data-based feedback provided by teacher educators to teacher trainees in peer teaching. Strategies were categorized to correspond with specific data situations frequently observed in the lessons. A discussion of the rationale for the strategies, coupled with descriptive data on the frequency of strategy selection, revealed much about the interpretive model that teacher educators may superimpose on data. Additional study on the empirical validation of the taxonomy is warranted subsequent to this descriptive/logical point of departure.

Abstract:
The Herbert Sondheim, Inc. scrapbooks in the New School Archives and Special Collections document the activities of a notable early to mid-20th-century New York-based manufacturer of ready-to-wear women's fashions. A precursor to the contemporary fast fashion industry, Sondheim's employees sketched and kept detailed notes on materials and construction of garments produced by Parisian designers, which the firm then adapted into more affordable and easily obtainable apparel for American consumers. A retrospective visual materials cataloguing project resulting from a graduate student's interest in the collection led to the online availability of over 1200 sketches of fashion adaptations and challenged archives staff to develop appropriate descriptive metadata for a fragmented, ambiguous and complex documentary record.

Abstract:
Nowadays in digital information environments, various types of resources coexist with heterogeneous metadata formats and standards and efforts have been made to achieve interoperability in order to use multiple metadata standards and reuse metadata records by developing strategies, which range from simple mappings among metadata elements to complex structural modeling. Dealing with information resources requires a description of form and machine readable content with results that are understandable to humans and can meet the interoperability requirements between information environments. Considering this, this research proposes a reflection and suggests the development of an architecture for semantic bibliographic descriptions that ensures interoperability in digital information environments. By using exploratory and descriptive analysis, we found that Descriptive Cataloguing methodologies and a bibliographic ontology description, explained in the rules and codes of cataloguing and in metadata standards, redesign the development of better structured new digital information environments to retrieve information and effectively establish interoperability.

Abstract:
This dissertation reports on an exploratory study of a self-directed learning framework for South African cataloguers (increasingly becoming known as metadata specialists) for facilitating their continuing education needs. The study is triggered by the 2010 report of the South African Department of Arts and Culture, which found that newly qualified information specialists cataloguers included were in practice not yet able to perform professional tasks. Continuing education is characteristic of professions and essential for keeping one's professional knowledge up to date. The study focused on the question of a framework required to support and bridge the continuing education needs of professional cataloguers in South Africa. It examines professionals' knowledge of organising information, the nature and role of selfdirected learning in their continuing education and the extent of cataloguers' commitment to selfdirected learning. These aspects are described in the research goal, namely to propose a selfdirected learning framework that cataloguers can use to facilitate their ongoing training needs. The study contains a literature review and an empirical component based on a mixed methods research approach. A survey was conducted in April-May 2015 as research method. Quantitative data was collected using a structured questionnaire (59 participants), supplemented by qualitative data from three semi-structured focus group interviews. An exploratory profile of the state of continuing education for South African cataloguers and their needs could accordingly be drawn up. Findings indicate that "self-direction" is not only related to the personality of the cataloguer. It also pertains to the process of self-directed learning and the context in which it takes place. Several theories on self-directed learning were compared to design a framework that speaks to the continuing education needs of cataloguers. Three concepts professional context, people (individuals, in collaboration with others) and learning (processes, theories and opportunities) form the background against which the framework was developed. The study concludes with recommendations about a framework for self-directed learning. It includes, inter alia, a national programme for continuing information organisation training, and the development of selfdirection in learning as a multifaceted personality trait recommended for continuing education in information organisation. Further research possibilities in relation to selfdirected learning and the self-directed learning framework are also mentioned.
'n Opname in April-Mei 2015 is as navorsingsmetode aangewend.

Abstract: Information and its transmission are essentials at the threshold of the XXI century Descriptive cataloging being an area of the Library Science is responsible for transmitting information existing inside of holdings of all types. This is made by building forms of representation and must follow the evolution of the needs of users. This affirmation worries specialists of the area. Standardization is indispensable in the representation of information and documents and it is also the aim of descriptive cataloging work; it is a grant for the exchange of bibliographic records. The worry increases as fast as the creation of new information available in different forms. The goal of this work is to analyze the state-of-the art of the standard "Resource Description and Access (RDA)" developed by the International Federation of Libraries Associations (IFLA) for catalogers and workers in bibliographic database. This work is founded in on-line bibliographic researches. The building of the historic of this work was based in the following factors: evolution of cataloging and its codes of rules; influence of technology in the communication media specifically in the exchange of bibliographic information; compatibility of concepts to reach an efficient communication between machine, cataloger and coded information to attend the user. This study of RDA was elaborated getting together the informational needs, the descriptive cataloging and the new standard, in order to understand its scope and if it is possible the international acceptance of it, as a form of bibliographic control as well as a way to enlarge the access and use of information available in the most different informational environments. Since RDA is a standard that is being developed, it may only be studied at the theoretical point of view. We verified that RDA is an effective standard since it links theory and practice.

Abstract:
Analyzing the trajectory of the concept of authorship in society and, in particular, in different areas of scientific knowledge, one can conclude that it rose to prominence during Modernity and, from this period on, has been going through continuous change. Amidst constant debates about -authorship? in diverse areas of knowledge, it is important that research be carried out to integrate the context of social nature and documental representation. It is about an exploratory, theoretical investigation, based on bibliographic, documental, historical and comparative research whose object of study is the concept of authorship and of author in documental representation, by means of cataloguing codes adopted by descriptive representation in Brazil, namely: the Rules for the catalog of printed books, better known as Vatican code, the Anglo-American cataloguing rules (AACR) and Resource description and access (RDA). As the author is represented in the bibliographic records according to guidelines established in the cataloguing codes, reflections about authorship and its form of representation are instrumental for links to be created between bibliographic records, documents and users. Theoretical reflections about sociocultural issues and documental representation seek to go beyond the technicist view and assign a social function to the descriptive representation, thus being able of mobilizing a knowledge society by providing access to documents, respecting particularities of users and, consequently, contributing to the representation, circulation, use and production of new knowledge.

Abstract:
Information Organization involves the processes necessary to the construction and management of documentary systems from an informational point of view. Inside Information Organization, we find Descriptive Representation, which is focused on documentary systems information records and their access points, in their relation to aspects of formal description. In order to achieve functionality, documentary systems records are expected to possess features that guarantee the adherence between the entities and the information needs they seek to represent. The main hypothesis of this study is that it is necessary for us to reclaim and reinforce the intellectual aspect of the process of generation of documentary systems information records. This way, the present study aims to contribute to the re-signification of Descriptive Representation as far as the development of models of documentary systems information records is concerned, in the context of Information Organization as a set of fundaments, methods and instruments for the construction and management of documentary systems. Keeping that in mind, an exploratory research was done about the concepts and documentary processes that cover the knowledge about Descriptive Representation, with the objective to identify, characterize and discuss their nuclear, defining aspects. Considering that information records exist as coherent structures among themselves, based on document typologies and on the prediction of information needs, we can conclude that Descriptive Representation, together with Thematic Representation, is concerned with the form and the content that constitute the records structure. These representations are therefore responsible for the development of models of information records, in the context of Information Organization, the activities of which are related to the construction and development management of documentary systems.

The Resource Description and Access (RDA) is the new guideline for cataloging developed to replace the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition (AACR2) in order to improve information retrieval. Accordingly, the present research aimed to analyze how bibliographic records of theses and dissertations of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) on areas of literature and cinema will be affected with the RDA standards. To answer the questionings conducted in this study, it is outlined as specific objectives: develop bibliographic records of theses and dissertations at the UFSC RDA standard; compare the cataloging elements in AACR2 and RDA standards; analyze bibliographic records of theses and dissertations of UFSC in the fields of literature and cinema according to RDA standards; identify and propose consistent elements for the description of bibliographic records of theses and dissertations UFSC according to the RDA standard; analyze bibliographic records of theses and dissertations of UFSC, specifically with regard to the entities-relationships; and verify in the national and international literature practical implementation of the new code that enable to identify advantages and disadvantages of RDA. The research is a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study, using the method of case study and, according to its purpose, it can be an applied research. The results of the study were analyzed from the user tasks perspective and pointed out that the bibliographic description presents significant changes in referring to the format, content and media of a resource. Based on the analysis of the records and the results obtained, it can be concluded that the cataloger needs to spend more attention, knowledge and time practicing, suggesting to this professional the need for continuing education.

Abstract:
The didactics of distance education in the area of descriptive cataloguing with special attention to computer aided instruction The didactic requirements and the methods of information technology that can be used in distance learning of descriptive cataloguing and in the preparation of appropriate computer aided instruction programs are first investigated theoretically and then practical recommendations are made. In the design of distance education several learning theories should be incorporated. The topics of instruction should include not only cataloguing and standards, but also the conversion of descriptive cataloguing to EDP formats, descriptive cataloguing from the perspective of the user and the organisation of descriptive cataloguing. Cognitive, pragmatic and affective learning objectives are set out. Bloom's taxonomy of learning objectives is adapted to meet the advanced needs of descriptive cataloguing. In addition, personal competences are reviewed. Instruction must correspond to the needs of the target group. Factors that must be taken into account are age, level of education, existing specialised knowledge, sex and different learning styles. The need to motivate learners is especially important in distance education. To this end ARCS-motivation theory is expanded to include the topic "freedom". Gagné's "Nine Events of Instruction" are expanded by methods of constructivism to encompass eleven didactic statements, which are formulated in terms of descriptive cataloguing. Standards can best be taught by means of computer aided tutorials using hypermedia. In the development of these tutorials the same didactic considerations are realised as in the planning of instruction. In order to assure the flexibility of tutorials, the technical design should be uncomplicated. The first two modules of a tutorial "Conversion of RAK-WB to ALEPH500" have been developed to demonstrate the feasibility and means of designing such a tutorial.

Although Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been discussed extensively amongst the ranks of cataloguers internationally, no research on the perceptions of South African cataloguers was available at the time of this research. The aim of this study was to determine how well RDA was faring during the study's timeframe, to give a detailed description regarding cataloguer perceptions within a higher education setting in South Africa. Furthermore, to determine whether the implementation of RDA has overcome most of the limitations that AACR2 had within a digital environment, to identify advantages and/or perceived limitations of RDA as well as to assist cataloguers to adopt and implement the new standard effectively. The study employed a qualitative research design assisted by a phenomenological philosophy to gain insight into how cataloguers experienced the implementation and adoption of RDA by means of two concurrent web-based questionnaires. The study concluded that higher education cataloguing professionals residing in the Western Cape were decidedly positive towards the new cataloguing standard. Although there were some initial reservations, they were overcome to such an extent that ultimately no real limitations were identified, and that RDA has indeed overcome most of the limitations displayed by AACR2. Many advantages of RDA were identified, and participants expressed excitement about the future capabilities of RDA as it continues toward a link-data milieu, making library metadata more easily available.

As this research has revealed a distinctly positive attitude from cataloguers' two main matters for future research remains, being: ? Why South African participants in this study voiced almost no perceived limitations to RDA as a cataloguing standard. Future research might be able to relay information regarding this trend, especially in the light that it was not a global phenomenon. ? A deeper look might have to be taken at how participants' experienced RDA training as this phenomenon might be closely linked to the reasons why the participants did not mention more limitations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
After an introduction and a short description of the research methods usually adopted in scientific disciplines and particularly in palaeography, some hypotheses on the influence of new technologies on human learning and some examples of the use of Web technologies in manuscript cataloguing are proposed. The reasons for the project of an information system adopting Web technologies for manuscripts cataloguing are then reported and the meaning of an open catalogue strictly related to the above information system is presented. The project is applied to a concrete example to show one of the possible ways the information system can be used by the palaeographers' community and, more in general, by scientific community. The paper ends with the proposal of long term publishing hypotheses for materials collected within the database of the open catalogue.

Abstract:
The oldest medieval domus in Ravello date back to the twelfth century, as an evolution of the original house with barrel vaults, a primitive stone construction with walls of dry masonry of limestone and almost always connected to an olive grove or a vineyard, widespread on the Campania coasts between the island of Capri, the coast of Sorrento and that of Amalfi. Vertical and horizontal aggregations of this module have constituted, over time, the evolution of the building typology, while retaining some of the pre-existing architectural elements and the peculiar construction characteristics, including the strong link of this architecture with the particular orography of the territory. The private building complexes are the result of this ongoing process, consisting of various rooms connected to each other and arranged on several levels, in which the members of a single family lived with their servants. The entire structure was surrounded by walls and defended by towers. The interiors consisted of rooms heated by fireplaces, kitchens, furnaces, Arab baths, cisterns, wells, cellars, warehouses, stables, rooms for winemaking, gardens and cultivated terraces. The paper analyzes the history and construction features of one of the few medieval domus still existing and which has not undergone substantial transformations, also because it was brought to light only in the last decade of the twentieth century, currently located in the boundaries of Villa Rufolo in Ravello. Its original conformation is hypothesized, thanks also to a description made of it in the archive documents. The paper also reports the work carried out on the case study in order to undertake a cataloguing of a heritage in continuous discovery.
