Full textHow can the naturalist’s and the geographer’s scientific enquiries, a political thought ranging from liberalism to anarchism, and a writer’s style all revolve around the relationship between Man and Nature ? Such is a question raised —especially with regards to the Essay genre— by the works of Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) and Élisée Reclus (1830-1905). Within the bounds of a longer 19th century, which can be seen as an age of revolutions marked by the fading off of terræ incognitæ, the dwindling of the Wilderness, and a series of economical and political fits (Industrial and Political revolutions triggering the succession of strings of regimes), it appears critical to reconsider these names as those of genuine authors. From the heart of a politics of nature, they bind together the geographies of Man and the Earth, and their personal experience of Nature (as explored or inhabited) with a thought of community ceaselessly shifting from the Individual to the Human Kind, from the Microcosm to the Macrocosm. These Essay writers are the heirs of the Enlightenment in their struggle against slavery, despotism and colonialism (which they document); they object to leaving science in the hand of a positivistic, ethnocentric caste —they are the authors of popular sciences and the prophets of a literary democracy in the making. They are the pioneers of a modern exploration of the relationship between writing and knowledge, the crucial witnesses of a gradual differentiation of sciences that their universalistic literary paradigm sets out to avert. The ultimate point is to carry on approaching Nature as a whole (cosmos) in an era bringing about its division, as an object, into two separate categories of literary creation and scholarly knowledge. In the dawning light of literary ecology, and in this world description in which all things depend on all things, the work of the Essay-writer seems to be the only one able to voice this complex speech, made of politics, science and literature all together

This dissertation examines the most significant features of malinke morphosyntax, some of which are typologically remarkable : word order ; multifunctionality of lexemes and consequently no strict compartmentalization between lexical classes ; polyvalent verbal categories ; lack of strictly speaking reflexive, impersonal or passive forms ; a prominent verbnoun opposition with a plurifunctional np vs. An exclusively predicative vp ; verbo-nominal status of adjectives ; heterogeneousness of the adverbial category

Full textThis thesis has a twofold purpose : it deals with a subject matter, and proposes a method. Its subject matter is the concept of landscape, worked out of examples taken from brive basin ; the method to appraise these phenomene is systemic analysis, applied to the problem of the landscapes. The term "landscape" is a subjective notion, for a landscape is a creation of man's eyes. To work out a method of valuation of landscape must enable people in charge of country planning or tourism as wall as local authorities to stress the strong points of a given landscape, and thus express better the genuive spirit, the "mood", the soul of a given region. A documentary source of 192 photographs will serve as a basis for reflection on the "meaning" of landscapes and give a picture of the landscapes of the brive basin by the end of our century. Our purpose is not only to describe the physical aspects of landscapes, but to appraise the impact of human civilization on a coherent geographic space, moulded by its past recent history. Systemic analysis applied to landscapes is concewed as a model providing us with a frame for the study of interactions between the system itself and its environment thanks to a circular pattern. Such an analysis method arms at apprehending the laws of the dynamics of landscapes, which indicate that the evolution of landscapes is chiefly conditioned by human decisions

Full textThe present survey analyses the functioning of moroccan hagiographical tales in the xiii and xivth centuries, both in form and content. The following material has been used as a basis for study: tadili: tachawwuf, (1220) el badisi, el maqsad, (1311) 1) on the morphological level: the moroccan legendary tale is characterised by formal organisation that discloses traditional expository structures reflecting oral tradition. It thus relies on a chain of oral transmission that guarantees the genuineness of the tales. This codified organisation of transmission reveals spiritual and parental ties between narrators and their numerous informants. 2) on the mythological level: the hagiographical universe is highlighted by journeys and movements throughout known or unkown environments. As a record of virtue and miracle, hagiography emphasises the way the irrational intrudes upon the real. The hero (= saint) is conceived of as a mythical figure or model, thus banishing real-life considerations. Likewise, the time-space element is also remeniscent of quest tales. Where does the myth end and the legend begin? what is the specific nature of the mythical universe? what is the relative importance of the real and the imaginary? a sample of examples is analysed in an attempt to answer these questions

Full textThis research rests on the state of the art about business ethics and two surveys on the managers of small firms (less than 50 employees) : one qualitative survey in 28 organizations, one quantitative survey in 194 organizations. It appears that ethics can be defined as stakeholders' interests hierarchy, as moral judge represents it. The description of french business ethics shows the existence of an impact of some personal contingency factors on actors' moral principles. But organizational factors seem to have no real influence
Yoo, Hi-Yon. "Ordre des mots et prosodie : essai de description et de formalisation pour le grec moderne." Paris 7, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003PA070028.
Full textThis work examines the relations between word order and prosody in Modem Greek. The aim is to propose syntactic, prosodic and communicative criteria explaining the choice of one word order among all the possible linearizations. First, the possible word orders for a given dependency tree are determined. Second, the correspondences between a given linearization and all the possible melodic configurations (corresponding ta a given communicative structure) are established. Two experimental studies (on ward stress and on the contours of constituents) show the importance of the communicative structure in defining the prosodic contours. The analysis is placed in the Meaning-Text Framework. The grammar I present covers the analysis of complex structures. The Greek data are also compared to French and Korean. Finally, I present an implementation of the correspondences between the syntactic level and the sound output, via the topological and phonological levels

Full textThis thesis investigates the possibility of developing an adequate epistemology of linguistic reference, i. E, the study of speakers' competence in the mastery of words Iike proper names, natural kind terms, and indexicals. Instead of focusing on the orthodox opposition between descriptivism and referentialism, it deals with the more fundamental debate between 'full-blooded' and 'modest' programs, Thus, the main question is not whether reference is 'determined' by description but whether a psychological explanation of linguistic reference is possible, It is argued that although the full-blooded project is plausible, a Gestalt shift is needed to carry it out. More precisely: If one is interested in explaining the cognitive underpinnings of linguistic reference, the realist conception of semantic properties - shared by both descriptivists and referentialists - and the representational theory of mind--presupposed by most cognitively oriented theorists-must be given up, The result is a pragmatically oriented conception of mind and meaning based on the model of practical knowledge, This conception leads to a new interpretation of the psychological role of Iinguistic conventions, the role of time and causation in the explanation of reference, and the triangulation processes involved in the acquisition and use of indexicals

Full textIn this work, we try to give a synchronic analysis and to bring out the specificity of biblical and post-exilic hebrew ( 538-166 BC) in general and Ezra's and Jonah's hebrew in particular. We apply the principles of the functional theory that must be considered as a linguistic theory though it had never been presented in its wholeness by Andre Martinet himself. We display briefly the applied methodological precepts without forgetting to tackle traditional grammar. The method is scientific and educational. It has recourse to modern techniques, including a systematic presentation of phonology, morphology and syntax as well as language problems. It permits us to put the question of historic uniformity of hebrew, its periodisation and its evolution during the second Temple period. This period of transition was considered, for a long time, to be one of the most obscure of the history of Israel. Our research is carried out in six chapters : the first one constitute a historical survery, the 2nd and the 3rd chapters constitute a review, the 4th and the 5th ones deal with syntax while the 6th one introduces synthematics. During our study of these biblical books, we reached the following results : changes that occured in the fields of morphology and phonetics are in part caused by the impact of pre-exilic hebrew and the use of classical forms. Lexicon and syntax were enriched by way of borrowings in the form of calques from foreign languages though Aramaean. These transformations were strenghened and accentuated in the Mishnah's hebrew in a period when hebrew and aramaean were in daily contact

Full textSub-saharan Africa (SSA) is characterized by a high population growth and a significant poverty. In addition, this area deals with a burden of disease due to both traditional infection diseases and the emerging chronic diseases. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) taking into account the local context are needed to strength health policy and to improve the population health. However, because of constraint research capacities, RCTs performed in SSA must investigate relevant research questions, biases must be avoided in methods, and health interventions evaluated must be reported completely for easing implementation in current clinical practice. Such efforts help to avoid waste of research. Our objectives were to describe the epidemiology of SSA RCTs, and then to evaluate the methodological quality as well as the reporting of evaluated interventions. On the one hand, our works highlighted that SSA RCTs mainly focused on diseases of the highest burden in that area, although they were frequently funded by high-income countries, and most of the corresponding authors were affiliated to those countries. In the other hand, we have shown that methods at high risk of bias can be avoided through simple methodological adjustments of minor cost. Improving the methodological quality of SSA RCTs implies a large dissemination of available methods at low risk of bias and guidelines on the complete reporting of interventions. Furthermore, understanding barriers and facilitators to the uptake of those methods and guidelines is equally required

Full textSchoolbook of geography, the description of the inhabited world by dionysius alexandrinus is situated in the tradition of greek cartography and in the cultural and political context of iic. A. D. Homerical model, aerial look upon the earth, strong visual suggestion of a description which claims for itself the power of the map, all this gives to dionysius an original place among alexandrian geographers. He compiled their treatises and maps but refused their scientific conventions. In this didactical project, geography is closely associated to mythography, with a complex system of mnemotechnical allusions to the main texts of greek literature. Geography is inducing a development of ethnographical descriptions, dealing with components of civilization or savage life. Dionysius is inspired by hesiodic tradition and philosophical anthopology. His poem reveals religious beliefs and the function of zeus and dionysos is emphasized. The reading of this text allows a large investigation about culture in iic a. Full textBy focusing on the relations between Zhu Xi and Lu Jiuyuan, two scholar-officials of the Song dynasty generally seen as major representatives of what is often called “neoconfucianism”, this dissertation uses the insights of the intellectual history of the period to propose a new perspective to study the patterns of controversy in traditional China. Taking as a starting point both a pragmatic description of the words and deeds of these two literati and an original translation of some texts they produce and put into practice, it attempts to stick to an emic point of view against any objectivist bias. The description of the assumptions of the actors (i.e., the rules that pattern their speech and actions) enables us to reconstruct a system of conscious values hierarchized under the idea of “knowledge”, and thereby puts into question our modern conception of knowledge. In order to achieve a deep understanding of this order of meaning, one needs to elaborate a suitable anthropology, for which the concepts and method developed by Louis Dumont have proved to be of fundamental value, leading to an attempt at an anthropology of knowledge. On an analytical level, the overall perspective we propose contributes to the intelligibility of the relation between Zhu Xi and Lu Jiuyuan, and, more generally, to the collective dynamics underlying this relation. On a disciplinary level, it confirms both the importance of an anthropological approach for the understanding of Chinese history and, in return, the importance of sinology as a source of precious insights for anthropology

Comparing these descriptions, on the basis of recent researches, allows going through their insertion in the narrative texture, their construction, their functions and their positions in the account, as well as their relationship with referential reality. It also allows to bring out information about stylistical practices of the authors, and to sketch a typology out for so different narrative forms as travel account and fictional account. From similar means, such as analogies, syntactical structuration, verbal tense effects, demarcating proceedings, work on vocabulary, hypotyposis, etc. ), these two literary genres treat description differently, according to their own restraints. Narrative fiction, a hurried discourse, clearly tends to make it profitable and functional. Travel account, in which narrative structure is weaker, gives more freedom in description, and helps to elaborate a new way of composing, not to be ignored modern novel

Full text"Lucid dreams" are dreams occuring during the sleep and in the course of which the dreamer knows that he is dreaming. The awareness of his state is often such that scientists explain the phenomenon by the emergence of wakeful consciousness in the dream. The approach presented here is different in the way that it holds that this type of consciousness, "dream lucidity", is completely distinct from wakeful consciousness. To support this view, the author starts by outlining the enabling conditions of this study : he retraces its scientific development; he endeavours to give an operational definition of lucidity; he examines ways of inducing dream lucidity in order to bring out its essential criteria; he establishes the conditions allowing to open up an area of experimentation. After having outlined these conditions, he looks at what lessons can be learned from systematic experimentation regarding lucid dreams with respect not only to their intrinsic dream quality but also as a cultural phenomenon and from the scientific point of view. This makes it possible to identify the theoretical implications of studying lucid dreams : by evidencing the limits of the traditional explanatory models and by using a critical approach which permits to describe lucidity as different frow wakeful consciousness and to present a new hypothesis to account for the existence of this phenomenon and the theoretical difficulties resulting from it

(6622937), Tatsushi Fukunaga. "L2 Writing Development in Intermediate College-Level Japanese-as-a-Foreign-Language Classrooms." Thesis, 2019.
Find full textTherefore, the current study has shed new light on the developmental changes in the writing performance of Japanese-as-a-foreign-language (JFL) learners. It investigated whether any remarkable changes are brought about in terms of overall complexity, complexity by subordination, accuracy, and fluency through repeating a weekly “15-Minute Writing Task” throughout one academic semester (16 weeks) and one academic year (32 weeks). The writing task topics were considered in terms of the Cognition Hypothesis (Robinson, 2001), which states that different cognitive demands of tasks will lead to different L2 output. Regarding this point, this study explored whether there were any significant differences between two task types: descriptive and argumentative essays. JFL learners who were enrolled in an intermediate-level course at an American university engaged in the two different types of timed writing tasks.
First, the one-semester investigation, based on the pre/posttest analysis, revealed different patterns between the two types of writing tasks. For the descriptive essays, despite the improvements in overall complexity, complexity by subordination, and fluency with a large effect size (r ≥ .6) (Plonsky & Oswald, 2014), no significant findings were confirmed for accuracy. In contrast, in the argumentative essays, the learners improved all the linguistic aspects but with a medium effect size (.4 ≤ r < .6).
Second, in the one-year investigation, the JFL learners significantly improved overall complexity, complexity by subordination, and fluency during the study period. The dynamic systems approach (Verspoor & van Dijk, 2011) also unraveled the developmental trajectories to show how different variables interacted in the two different types of writing tasks, respectively, throughout the measurement period. Although there were no statistically significant differences in grammatical accuracy measures, the process of L2 writing development showed fluctuations, demonstrating that the improvements in syntactic complexity seemed to have caused many grammatical errors temporarily. Lastly, the learners’ compositions, which were also assessed qualitatively by two native Japanese speakers in terms of readability, indicated significant improvements in communicative adequacy.
Finally, to investigate any changes in the learners’ beliefs toward Japanese writing before and after the task repetition, the JFL learners completed the Belief Questionnaire About Writing in Japanese (Ishibashi, 2009). In addition, to examine any changes in foreign language anxiety with a focus on Japanese writing, the learners were required to complete the second-language version of the Daly-Miller Writing Apprehension Test (Cheng, Horwitz, & Schallert, 1999). The study found that the extensive writing experience had a positive impact on the JFL learners’ confidence and willingness when writing in L2 Japanese.
