Abstract:
Research questions: This research was focused on exploring the impact of communication technologies on rural populations in the Congo. In particular, this research posed two questions: 1. Do mobile phones produce development in rural areas of the Congo? 2. Do mobile phones improve the living conditions of people? The questions helped examine ways in which mobile phones were or were not engendering development among these populations. Methods: The research was undertaken using four methods: 1. Phenomenology, 2. Sen's capability approach, 3. Participatory method, and 4. Ecological method. Phenomenology aimed to cater to the experiences and meanings of mobile phone uses. Sen's capability approach allowed the interviews to be focused on the basic needs of the poor. Participatory method provided a greater participation of respondents in discussion groups, and ecological method helped achieve a higher inclusion of key players in the targeted area. Major findings: The major findings of this study included: 1. Much of the literature on mobile phones and development was not representative or inclusive of key players and their day-to-day lives. 2. Studies have tended to present snapshots or single-focused accounts of mobile phone and development. 3. Authors of mobile phone research have tended to see rural populations with an urban-led bias, leaving aside the actual characteristics of rural areas. 4. Mobile phones were not limited to a person and her properties, but rather mobile phones were owned and shared by the community. 5. Participants expressed a need for technical skills and means to be available to the community and their members. 6. Households were not separated, but rather they were connected to allow people take care of one another. 7. People were connected through collective solidarities in order to come to the aid of those with special needs. 8. Literature and mobile phone sponsors or companies were disseminating mobile phones with an extractive and commercial tendency, focused principally on fees of batteries, chargers, and prepaid cards. Major contributions: The major contributions of this research revolved around the focus on: 1. technology to enhance the needed technical skills among concerned populations. 2. shared ownership of mobile phones to cater to both users and non-users of mobile phones among concerned populations. 3. connected households to capitalize on the dynamics of family among concerned populations. 4. collective solidarities to accommodate the processes of aiding one another among concerned populations. 5. capabilities, from a commercial or extractive aspect to capabilities to enhance the capabilities of people to afford mobile phones fees. 6. capabilities, from a corporate or business aspect to capabilities to enhance the capabilities of people who did not and could not own a business. 7. human basic needs to enhance the capabilities of mobile phone users with regard to human basic needs. 8. outliers or the marginalized to attend to those left out among concerned populations. 9. mobile phone-centric libraries to enhance the storage and retrieval of needed information among concerned populations.

Abstract:
The 2010 Fédération Internationale de Football Association’s (FIFA) World Cup (WC) would be the first time that a FIFA WC would be hosted on the African continent. This study was aimed at describing the South African City of Tshwane (COT) general volunteers’ experiences of volunteering at the 2010 FIFA WC. The FIFA Volunteer Programme consists of two groups of volunteers: Local Organising Committee (LOC) volunteers and each Host City (HC) volunteers. The COT volunteers are HC volunteers from the Tshwane Metropolitan Area (TMA). Volunteers are active in a variety of different contexts, namely in the community, volunteers at sport clubs or schools and also at mega sport events. Volunteers make it possible to host a mega sport event because they provide their time and effort without expecting remuneration or they receive a stipend amount. The existing literature of volunteers at mega sport events investigated what motivated volunteers to participate as well as how satisfied the volunteers were with the experience. The aim of this study was to describe COT general volunteers’ experiences of preparing (preparation phase) for the 2010 FIFA WC; COT general volunteers’ experiences during (participation phase) the 2010 FIFA WC, as well as the South African COT general volunteers’ experiences on their involvement (reflection phase) at the 2010 FIFA WC was described. The methodology employed in this study was Descriptive Phenomenology and the Duquesne Phenomenological Research Method was used to analyse the material. The differences between Descriptive Phenomenology and Interpretive Phenomenology were described. The material consisted of a written account as well as an interview, which was based on the essences that were portrayed in the written accounts. There were five participants — three spectator services volunteers and two rights protection volunteers. All of the participants were female. The findings of this study were divided into the preparation phase, participation phase and the reflection phase. In the preparation phase the COT general volunteers described two essences namely, the application process and training. In the participation phase the COT general volunteers experienced four essences namely, the working of shifts, interaction with volunteers, interaction with supervisors and lastly interaction with tourists. In the reflection phase the volunteers described two experiences, growth and value. This research project contributes to sport psychology because this study describes the experiences of volunteers at the 2010 FIFA WC.
Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2012.
Psychology
unrestricted

Abstract:
This research focuses on the design process and more specifically on the way decision making can influence the design process’ outcomes in its strategic adequacy and overall quality. The study is centred on the conceptual phase of the design process and, in general, aims to describe the behaviour along the process of design students and professional Portuguese designers both at the educational and business level. It should result in a descriptive model to support the understanding of design process management in terms of its critical variables. This descriptive model is based on the identification of the key parameters of design processes concerning its strategic adequacy and overall quality. In methodological terms it is a mixed methods research with a clear dominance of qualitative methods integrating an active research where experiments either in simulated situations or in real context play a key role. Quantitative methods were also used and they served the purpose of triangulating data in order to have a more consistent and rigorous description of the design process and its main structural elements. Data gathering occurred in the education and business areas, partly separately and partly combined. Furthermore, in the field of education a comparison of the performance of both Portuguese and Dutch university students was made. That helped to validate some findings of previous studies but also to understand the role different Design curricula can have in the performance of students. The main conclusion of the study is that decision making togehter with information and knowledge management, and idea generation are the fundamental aspects to be addressed in design processes when both strategic adequacy and good quality of the design outcomes are pursued. Another important finding is that decision making is better understood through the use of a few central parameters. These parameters were used in the creation of a descriptive decision making model that equates xi Abstract decision making at three different levels that are highly dependent on information/knowledge management and Idea generation. At a macro level, which regards the mindset of the designer, we make a distinction into two elements: a) the design strategy with its three types – problem driven, solution driven and integration driven; and b) the creative cognitive processes that present two modes of action: the exploratory one that has to do with operations such as contextual shifting, functional inference and hypothesis testing; and the generative one that is related with analogical transfer, association, retrieval and synthesis. At an intermediate level we have decisions that can have a Framing, Key or Enabler nature. And finally, we have the micro level of the model, the operationalization of the mindset, where the decision strategy and the decision mode are chosen. The decision strategy presents three types of behavior: the compensatory rule based; the non compensatory rule based and the negotiated compensatory /non compensatory one and it is clearly linked with the way decisions are taken in processing information. The mode of decision is linked with group dynamics and focuses on the way teams organize themselves while working and deciding.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the trans-border circulation and production of feminist knowledge through translation. More specifically, my research focuses the translation of the U.S. women’s health book, Our Bodies, Ourselves, by a Chinese feminist NGO in 1998. My dissertation studies the social, cultural and political aspects of feminist translation, and examines the relation between translation and feminist praxis. Through the lens of gender and (feminist) health politics in 1990s China, I examine how the 1998 Chinese translation conveys the book’s message about how women should relate to their bodies. Set in the context of Chinese society opening up during the late 1970s, my research outlines the emergence of gender awareness in China with the influx of translated feminist texts, especially in the realm of women’s health research. Medical discourses were then assigned a privileged position in the studies of women’s sexual and reproductive health. However, with increased communications between Chinese and foreign feminists, Chinese women scholars developed new ideas around women’s sexual and reproductive health. The Chinese translation of OBOS addresses the lack of gender awareness in local discussions about women’s health. With a multi-method study, I emphasize the social and linguistic dimensions of translating a feminist health project into post-reform China. This study is based on both interview and comparative textual analysis data. Using feminist translation theories, I examine how the Chinese translators handled the book’s presentation of women’s sexuality and reproductive health. This thesis also highlights the constraints on translating feminism from the local context. This raises questions about the power of (feminist) translation, and emphasizes the need to examine the social-political context of translation practices.

Abstract:
Influencer marketing has become a central aspect within brand’s marketing activities (Kapitan & Silvera, 2016). The former marketing way of including celebrities within marketing purposes (Pringle & Binet, 2005) has in recent years been discussed as digital media influencers (Kapitan & Silvera, 2016). Digital media influencers resulted in social media influencers, where Instagram is one out of the social media which is worldwide used (Influencer Marketing Hub, 2018). Social media influencers are shown to have a significant role for brands in the process of reaching out to consumers (Lin, Bruning & Swarna, 2018) and within the fashion industry, the opinions of fashion influencers tend to weigh heavy within consumers decision making (Loureiro, Costa & Panchapakesan, 2017). However, besides the known influential characteristics of celebrity endorsement (Page Winterich, Gangwar & Grewal, 2018; Tzoumaka, Tsiotsou & Siomkos, 2014), the level of influence of Instagram influencers has mainly been discussed in terms of number of followers (De Veirman, Cauberghe & Hudders, 2017). The purpose of this study is to describe the influential characteristics of an Instagram fashion influencer and its influence on consumers purchase intention for fashion in Sweden. The research method applied for this research was primary data in the form of a survey research and was chosen as it allows to generate data which makes it possible to define correlations between the variables (Bryman & Bell, 2015). The study is based on the theory of consumer purchase intention, celebrity endorsement as well as influencer marketing, and through that, three hypotheses were created: 1) the trustworthiness of an Instagram fashion influencer has positive impact on consumers purchase intention, 2) the expertise of an Instagram fashion influencer has positive impact on consumers purchase intention, 3) the physical attraction of an Instagram fashion influencer has positive impact on consumers purchase intention. The conclusion drawn indicates that the trustworthiness of an Instagram fashion influencer is the only influential characteristic amongst the identified characteristics in this research which impacts consumer purchase intention for fashion in Sweden.

Abstract:
Organizations in the age of modern technology have a diverse workforce, who are spread around the globe, and the business leaders of the 21st century need to understand how best to manage, overcome new challenges, and know the various skills of team members to capitalize on their differences and unique skills. To allow those geographically dispersed workers to reach their full potential and facilitate team success. Global virtual teams (GVTs) operate in complex environments characterized by diverse cultural and organizational elements. The primary purpose of this correlational and nonexperimental quantitative research was to examine the impact of transformational leadership on GVTs, their productivity, and job satisfaction with leadership effectiveness. Using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS), data analyzes were completed through SurveyMonkey.com and SPSS software. The study measured transformational leadership, the independent variable, by the leader's ability to motivate workers to be satisfied and productive, and by the leader's effectiveness in the organization. Data were assessed by frequency analysis, moderation analyzes, and multiple regression analysis on the dependent variables of job satisfaction, leadership effectiveness, and productivity. The findings from this study reinforced the positive relationships found between transformational leadership, employee productivity, and leadership effectiveness in GVTs. Results also showed that motivated employees increase productivity and help in the organization's growth. Implications for positive social change included improvements in GVT interactions to increase the exchange of diverse ideas that lead to increased productivity and job satisfaction.

Valverde, Sarah Hatheway. "THE MODERN SEX DOLL-OWNER: A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2012. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/849.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last fifteen years, the sex doll industry has grown from producing inexpensive novelty items to creating a multimillion-dollar global industry featuring high- quality, realistic love dolls. These dolls are designed and advertised for sexual stimulation, companionship, artistic representations of human fantasy, and other creative pursuits, such as photography. Made of flesh-like silicone, modern sex dolls sell from $3,500-$10,000. The use of human simulacra for sexual stimulation is an enduring practice. However, the psychological community has said little on the subject. Early sexologists briefly reference Agalmatophilia or Statuphilia, a rare sexual attachment to statues. Today, the sex doll phenomenon appears increasingly prevalent across the globe. Media coverage of this phenomenon has been featured in online magazines, television programs, music, documentaries and major motion pictures. More often than not, sex doll-ownership is portrayed as pathological. Sex doll-owners are members of a marginalized population, and accessing the population is challenging as many members of the community wish to remain anonymous for fear of judgment, persecution, and psychiatric labeling. The purpose of this study was to increase psychology’s understanding of this interesting and growing population. Specifically, a 45-item online survey addressing demographics was constructed and assessed. Additionally, participants were asked to describe their relationship status, doll-ownership status, and satisfaction with human and sex doll partners, including sexual satisfaction and performance. Quality of life was also assessed via the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Sixty-one participants were recruited from an online doll-owner community forum. It was hypothesized that most doll-owners sampled would be middle-aged, White, single, heterosexual males who are neither significantly better nor worse in terms of psycho-sexual functioning and life satisfaction than the general population. Descriptive data and statistical analysis partially supported the hypotheses. Implications and future direction are discussed, as are methodological considerations.

Abstract:
Over the past ten years, there has been a consistent increase in opioid use, which has resulted in an increase in enrolment in methadone maintenance therapy [MMT]. With retention in MMT being a key factor, in order to understand the process of retention, it is important to gain an understanding of individual perceptions and experiences. No research in Ottawa, Ontario has addressed the perspective of MMT from people enrolled in MMT; therefore, nursing based research was undertaken. The objective was to understand the process and experiences associated with MMT from the perspective of persons who are enrolled in treatment. Twelve participants were engaged in semi-structured interviews. These participants described that, although MMT can positively affect the people who use such a treatment option, it continues to have a negative impact that repeatedly affects MMT initiation and delivery. The theoretical framework of Hardt and Negri’s “Triple Imperative of Empire” was used to analyze the research participants’ interviews within the current MMT program, to help develop a more inclusive healthcare service that addressed the current barriers hindering access and retention in treatment. The integration of this framework can help engage persons in treatment, tailor treatment to patient specific needs, and as a result increase access and retention in MMT programs.

Abstract:
Through our smartphones, the access to information is higher than ever before. Social media has revolutionized the communication landscape in how we share information and communicate to each other. Social media has significantly impacted marketing communication, therefore organizations in B2B are exploring and trying to identify ways in how to make a profitable use of social media. Despite this interest, there seems to be insufficient understanding of how to properly manage social media in the B2B context. Furthermore, branding and brand equity through social media communication creates opportunities such as deeper customer relationship, collaboration and reduce the information necessary for a purchase decision. Currently there is a gap in the theoretical understanding of how brand equity can be enhanced through social media. The purpose of this research is to explore and describe how brand equity can be enhanced through social media marketing within B2B for SME. This research aims to understand how small and medium-sized enterprises can utilize social media in the best way possible. The research adopted a qualitative exploratory descriptive approach. The collection of data was conducted through six semi-structured interview. The sample selection for the qualitative interviews were conducted on project managers and purchase managers. The result of this research gave new insights to the customer-based brand equity model in the B2B context and how customer-based brand equity can be applied in social media marketing. This resulted in a brand equity model for B2B social media marketing, where the steps have a dependency to each other. Thus, enhancing brand equity in social media demands an identification of the social media benefits, establishing a marketing plan, how to reach your target audience, utilize experience of others, communicating about technical innovation and change through the supply chain.
Data samlades in genom sex semi-strukturerande intervjuer.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the relationship between fund managers and appraisers in the national sector, of real estate investment funds, with the aim of developing a theoretical framework of how the independence of the appraisers is perceived by both agents. Regarding the methodology, this study combines a qualitative interview survey with experts to understand which are the main concepts related to the appraiser´s independence and a quantitative survey based on a questionnaire distributed individually to several real estate fund managers and appraisers. We can conclude that the concept of appraiser independence does not have a simple definition and that the factors more mentioned in the definition are the pressure, the conflicts of interests, work ethic, and be qualified. The qualitative research brought great added value to this study allowing us to understand the factors that influence the appraisers? independence. The statistic results show that the five factors more correlated with the appraiser´s independence are client dimension, risk of disciplinary sanctions imposed by regulatory authorities or professional associations, access to the previous works of the same real estate, form of remuneration of the appraisals, and appraiser´s experience. Additionally, we also found that appraisers and other agents have the same perceptions about the importance of each factor to the appraisals independence. Some limitations of this study are the lack of direct control over respondents while answering the questionnaire and the fact we have handled all factors the same way.

Brüning, Adrian Rudolf Nicolaus Ernst. "A polarimetric method for collagenase activity measurement." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004113.

Full text
Abstract:
A polarimetric method for monitoring the rate of soluble collagen breakdown by collagenase enzyme action has been developed. The method represents an extension of previous physicochemical techniques based on viscometry, but is simpler and easier to carry out, particularly in the case of reaction rate studies. The method was developed arising from reports of collagenase activity measurement on inappropriate substrates such as gelatin, modified collagens and synthetic polypeptides. The optical method depends on measurement of the loss in optical rotation in solutions of soluble calfskin collagen resulting from initial enzymic cleavage of the collagen trip1e-helix, followed by spontaneous unwinding of the resultant unstable helical fragments. Specific assay conditions were chosen to ensure that the loss in optical rotation following enzymic cleavage was rapid and complete. The method is specific since in the absence of collagenase, non-specific proteinases produce only a limited decrease in solution optical activity. The method has also been compared with established physicochemical assay techniques and compares favourably with both viscometric and titrimetric collagenase assays. The availability of a rapid, sensitive and quantitative procedure for measurement of collagenase activity provides a convenient means for detecting the presence of collagenase in solution and examination of hide bacterial cultures for collagenase production. In addition, a study of biocidal compounds of potential interest in hide preservation for possible inhibitory effects on collagenase is conveniently carried out with the method. Fundamental research into synergistic action in enzymic hydrolysis of collagen is now possible, providing valuable insight into the mechanism of raw hide biodeterioration.

Abstract:
This thesis represents an attempt to develop a systematic critique of various forms of educational research, contemporary and historical. Much has been written on educational research, some of it critical of individual elements or styles, but little by way of the overt establishment of a set of criteria which is then applied to an understanding and critique of major forms of educational research, quantitative and qualitative, macro and micro. In this thesis, I attempt to develop such a set of criteria, to be drawn variously from selected literature in contemporary philosophy of science, and social theory and critique, which may then be so applied. The structure of the thesis, then, is to initially develop and justify a set of criteria. This is followed by an examination of dominant strains of educational research in the nineteenth century and earlier, according to these criteria. Subsequently, these same criteria are applied to various more contemporary forms of educational research such as functionalism, ethnomethodology and phenomenology. In each case the genealogy, and basic assumptions are traced. Further, the application of the criteria allows a critique of shortcomings or biasses in each to be developed. For example functionalist assumptions with regard to socia change, and unilinear development are criticized, as also its normative orientation, and dependence on a misconceived biological analogy. Phenomenology and ethnomethodology are both criticized for their failure to embrace macro structures and concerns, and their dependence on an isolated and subjectivist ontology and epistemology. The thesis concludes with some recommendations for more satisfactory forms of research in education, and some examples of existing research which fulfil the criteria developed herein more, or less, satisfactorily.

Full text
Abstract:
The verbal protocol method is used extensively in computer usability studies. This study was designed to test the feasibility of using the verbal protocol method as a means of conducting field research on the online catalogue. Ten undergraduate students conducted their own research on DRA’s Infogate. As they searched, they talked aloud about what keys they were pressing, what was happening on the screen, and their reactions. Transcripts of sessions were analyzed. A total of 65 different problems or comments were noted during search sessions, with 11 problems or comments noted in three or more sessions. This supports the hypothesis that the verbal protocol method is a valuable means of identifying common problems for users. It is suggested that the verbal protocol method offers great potential as a research tool in librarianship, for example in the area of interface design.

Abstract:
Open Research Data is gaining popularity nowadays, and various research units and individuals are interested to join this trend. However, due to variety of Open Research Data technologies, they have found it is difficult to select proper ones for their specific requirements. Thus, a method for evaluating of Open Research Data related technologies is developed in this study for researchers to select proper ones. Firstly, the theoretical knowledge of research data sharing and reusing barriers is resulted from a structured literature review. As a result, from the 19 primary studies, 96 instances of existing barriers are identified and classified to seven categories, where four of them are research data sharing barriers and rest of them are reusing barriers. This knowledge is regarded as an important resource for understanding researchers’ requirements on Open Research Data technologies, and utilized to develop the technology evaluation method. Additionally, the Open Research Data Technology Evaluation Method (ORDTEM) is developed basing on the Goal/Question/Metric (GQM) approach and resulted research data sharing and reusing barriers. To develop this method, the GQM approach is adopted as the main skeleton to transform these barriers to measurable criterion. Consequently, the ORDTEM, which is consisting of six GQM evaluation questions and 14 metrics, is developed for researchers to evaluate Open Research Data technologies. Furthermore, to validate the GQM-based ORDTEM, a focus groups study is conducted in a workshop. In the workshop, nine researchers who has the need to participate Open Research Data related activities are recruited to form a focus group to discuss the resulted ORDTEM. And by analysing the content of the discussion, 16 critical opinions are addressed which resulted eight improvements including one refinement on an existing metric and seven new metrics to ORDTEM. Lastly, a testing process of applying ORDTEM to evaluate four selected Open Research Data technologies is implemented also for validating whether it can be used in solving real-world evaluation tasks. And more than the validation, this experiment also results the materials about usage of ORDTEM, which is useful for future adopters. However, more than developing the solution to eliminate the difficulty of selecting technologies for participating Open Research Data movements, this study also provides two additional contributions. For one thing, resulted research data sharing and reusing barriers also direct the future effort to prompt Open Research Data and Open Science. Moreover, the experience of utilizing the GQM approach to transform existing requirements to evaluation criterion is possible to be studied for developing other requirement-specific evaluation.

Alwzinani, Faris. "A method to disseminate and communicate IS research outputs beyond academia." Thesis, Brunel University, 2017. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/14726.

Full text
Abstract:
Academic researchers in many disciplines are facing difficulties in disseminating their research outputs beyond the academic community. Particularly, Information Systems (IS) academic researchers have been struggling to make their research more relevant to practice. The diversity of IS research means that should be a wide audience within and beyond academia who could benefit from IS research outputs. This audience includes educators, practitioners, patients, etc. How IS relevant to practice is a central dilemma of IS research. Research relevance is classified according to dimensions such as interesting, implementable, current, accessible “Article style” by many IS scholars. These dimensions are important to be investigated as some academic papers are yet to be beneficial to an audience beyond academia. The Accessible dimension is the focus of this study where accessible means the academic papers should be readable and understood in terms of tone, style, structure, and semantics by the potential audience beyond the academic community. This study investigates the barriers that limit academic researchers in disseminating and communicating their research outputs beyond academia. This study aims to design a communication method to assist academic researchers in disseminating and communicating their research outputs beyond academia. This study consists of three phases, in the first phase a qualitative method is applied by interviewing academics in the Information System and Computing Department at Brunel University to gain a better understanding of how and why academics disseminate beyond academia. Based on communication theories a research framework is adapted to analyse and explain the interview data. In the second phase, short videos are recorded of 10 academics where each explains one of their papers. In the third phase, two different groups are interviewed to evaluate the 10 short videos in regards the Information Quality (IQ) dimensions (i.e. appropriate amount of information, format, and timeliness). By using the thematic analysis technique the academics highlighted three barriers that limit them to disseminate and communicate their research outputs beyond academia. The three barriers are the message (i.e. academic structure and language of research papers), channel (i.e. academic journal and conferences), and social system (i.e. lack of Incentives, lack of time, and lack of support). Moreover, academics emphasised the vital role of feedback loop in their communication with target audience beyond academia. The 10 short videos are designed to overcome two of these barriers (i.e. message and channels). Each short video is evaluated by its academic author on one hand and the potential audience/stakeholders of the short video from the other hand (e.g. practitioners). Thus, the academic authors of the video suggest some changes by adjusting the video structure and adding some examples for more explanations of their research papers. Also, authors concerned about format particularly the visual elements of the video which have to be completely matched with the title of the video. However, the opinions of potential audiences vary based on their information need. For example, some practitioners are concerned with the practical information, in other words, practitioners seek the applicable part of the information provided in the short video (i.e. how to apply something); and others watch the short video to increase their awareness of a particular topic. This study will assist academic researchers to focus on how to disseminate their research outputs to audience/stakeholders beyond academia using media tools (i.e. video). Also, it provides a novel method of disseminating and communicating their research outputs beyond the academic community. Moreover, this study helps to create an interaction platform that enables academic researchers to build a collaborative framework and a mutual understanding with the audience beyond academia.

Taylor, Susan. "A descriptive interpretive exploration of the nurse consultant role and its influence on the research agenda." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2016. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/89032/.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: To focus on an exploration of the NC role and its engagement with and influence on the research agenda for nursing, Background NC posts have only been established in the United Kingdom since 1999. The role is intended to incorporate four domains: expert practice, leadership and consultancy, education and training, service development and research. Although there has been professional literature regarding the role development in general, there is little written regarding the development of the research aspect and how this influences the research agenda for nursing. Design A qualitative exploration of the research component of the NC role was undertaken using semi-structured audio-recorded telephone interviews with 13 NCs across England. Data were analysed using McCormack’s (2000a) multiple lens approach, a framework that facilitated thematic analysis. The study was informed by the theoretical frameworks of Professional Socialisation and Benner’s (1984) Stages of Clinical Competence, which allowed critical analysis of the data. Findings In relation to the development of the research component of the NC role, the data suggest that NCs were poorly supported in clinical practice, and that, although most held Masters Degrees, this educational level did not provide NCs with adequate preparation for the role or for delivery of the research component of their role. There was also poor understanding of the research role by the authors of NC job descriptions who comprised of NCs themselves, service managers or Directors of Nursing. Research has both an academic and clinical focus in relation to development, infrastructure support and delivery and therefore I expected that Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) would have been involved in the development of the research aspect of the NC role. However, there was very little or no engagement with HEIs by authors of the job descriptions in most cases. Constraints of the clinical environment around service pressures, competing demands, coupled with a lack of mentorship and the absence of a research culture and inadequate links with HEIs were other factors contributing to the barriers to research development. However, the findings revealed that NCs contribute to the research culture within their organisations through various levels of engagement, but there was little in the way of active involvement in research projects. Implications for Practice/Research This research has added to the body of knowledge concerning how, in clinical practice, NCs are socialised into the world of research and what support should be available to ensure NCs deliver on the research aspect of the role. Research and Development activities are considered a major job requirement, where there is an expectation that research will be conducted in a specialist area. This study has concluded that NCs are a group of expert nurses who are visibly making a difference to EBP but not necessarily in the way first envisaged when the roles were developed. This study has highlighted an emerging conceptual framework CFRE (Allen et al. 2004) which could be used to operationalise the research component of the role. The emerging field of implementation science is recommended for the development of the research element of the NC role in order to accelerate the EBP agenda for nursing. Key stakeholders who currently employ NCs should review the infrastructure and support provided to deliver on this.

Lee, Tsz Yan Juliana. "Technique and method development for intervertebral disc (IVD) research." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/43799.

Full text
Abstract:
Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is one of the major causes of low back pain. The direct and indirect cost of managing back pain posts heavy socioeconomic burden to the society. Improved technologies and techniques together with well documented experiments will benefit the research field by saving effort in doing the optimization in every laboratory and avoiding experiment failure due to incomplete understanding of the procedures. These can accelerate scientific discovery, reduce the sacrifice of animals and enable a more effective use of funding. Nucleus pulposus (NP) is the central part of IVD. Differences in matrix compositions in human NP clinical samples demand different cell isolation protocols for optimal results but there is no clear guide about this to date. Sub-optimal protocols may result in low cell yield, limited reliability of results or even failure of experiments. We experimented different isolation protocols to study different parameters involved and suggested some rules for cell isolation in three main applications: RNA extraction for phenotyping, cell isolation for cell culture, and characterization by flow cytometry. In addition, instead of extracting RNA from isolated cells, extraction of RNA from tissues directly may avoid the change of RNA levels during the cell isolation process. However, extraction of RNA directly from human and large animal IVD tissue is technically challenging due to its tough nature, low cell-to-matrix ratio and high proteoglycan content. Thus we developed a method for RNA extraction from bovine disc tissues by integrating the use of cryosectioning, additional phase separation and high salt precipitation into conventional guanidinium thiocyanate based method. With this method, RNA could be extracted from the NP tissue directly but the concentration was low. A shift toward 270 nm was observed in its UV spectrum which was due to phenol contamination. This caused an overestimation of RNA concentration. Hence we developed a computational method based on UV spectra for correcting the overestimated concentrations of RNA contaminated with phenol. The accuracy of concentration increased substantially with the use of the correction formula. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have great potential in IVD engineering and hence we studied the isolation and culturing of MSCs from different sources. Effect of cell shape was reported for MSCs but not for NP cells. Micropatterning can be used to pattern cells into different shapes and arrangements. Therefore, we optimized the preparation of bovine NP cell micropatterns and also investigated the preparation of cell micropatterns for confocal microscopy. Besides, we developed methods to study the gene expression of cells on patterns by RT-qPCR with and without prior selection of cells of interest by laser capture microdissection (LCM). In short, different methods related to IVD research were developed and optimized. With improved methods together with a better understanding of the underlying rationale, researchers can save time and cost in their experiments and reduce experiment failure rate. This will help to accelerate researches. New methods also enable studies which were not feasible in the past.

Full text
Abstract:
The law defines the sexuality of bodies in limited terms. The law draws lines across the body which force it into identification and categorisation (male, female, straight, gay, human, non-human). These definitions conflict with the materialities of the body and the materialities of the encounter of sex, which are inclined to ‘push’ at and reterritorialize these boundaries. Legal and ethical frames restrict the ability of law and of research to access the encounter of sex, where bodies push these limits by moving, touching, kissing, fucking, caressing and becoming. I claim that ethics as contextual laws that derive from encounters carry the potential to subvert the subjugation of bodies from law’s inside. This subversion is dependant on establishing access to the encounter, which I argue is possible through methodologically radical sexuality research. The researcher’s body is also a sexed body, and I claim that by situating, and tracing the process of situating the ‘I’ within research, the ‘soul’ of the individual finds itself connected to the collective, through lines drawn across it by law. These lines can be ‘ruptured’ through their reconnection to the encounter of sex, which draws law deeper into the encounter itself, such that law can be disrupted through desire into becoming radically ‘ethical’. Through the deployment of Deleuzian Conceptual and Methodological Tools, I frame the basis through which law can become-ethical. The creation of this theoretical frame brings me and my thesis to wade through the ‘waves’ of real encounters with the field, at a nudist beach at Cap D’Agde in Southern France. In the course of doing so, I become reflexive and critical of the Deleuzian conceptual and methodological tools and whether even radical and immanent philosophy is equipped to assist the law in becoming-ethical in its judgment of sex. I claim that access to the encounter and to disrupting law towards radically bodily-sensitive judgment and ‘measuring’ of encounters is a ‘practical’ endeavour. This is the radically ethical responsibility of the Researcher-Practitioner: A lawyer-researcher body who is deployed into the field to subvert the spectres of law and sexuality through practice, which is traced presence within the real, fleeting, everlasting, intimate, joyful, painful, banal, profound, hot, heavy, fast, slow, violent, gentle and sand-drenched encounter of sex itself.

Breedt, Danie. "The experiences of South African spectators at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/36813.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: The primary goal of this research study was to describe the experiences of South African spectators as it pertains to the 2010 FIFA World Cup (WC) South AfricaTM . As this study focused on spectators' experiences before, during and after the 2010 FIFA WC, three secondary goals were identified, namely to describe South African spectators' experiences prior to the 2010 FIFA WC, to describe South African spectators' experiences during the 2010 FIFA WC and to describe South African spectators' experiences after the 2010 FIFA WC. Methodology: The researcher adopted a descriptive phenomenological research position, in particular the Duquesne Phenomenological Research Method (DPRM). With reference to this study, an objective phenomenon (the 2010 FIFA WC) was primarily understood by the researcher through the participants' (South African spectators) subjective descriptions of their first-hand experience of this phenomenon. This objective phenomenon presented itself within the mind of the individual and the researcher had access to this reality through the participants' written accounts and consequent interviews. Therefore two methods of data collection was used. The notions of reduction, bracketing, and free imagination were used in order to keep the researcher's personal biases and prior knowledge from contaminating the knowledge of the objective phenomenon. Findings: From the experiences prior to the 2010 FIFA WC there were four essences that emerged. Firstly, there was a sense of anticipation in SA in the build up towards the tournament. Participants were excited about socialising with foreigners, the performance of the South African national team as well as the opportunity to showcase SA's capabilities to host such an event. The second essence that emerged was the descriptions of the atmosphere in SA. There were some mixed emotions experienced leading up to the tournament with some being excited and others feeling pessimistic about SA's ability to host the tournament successfully. Thirdly, there was a sense of companionship between the participants and their friends as well as within SA as a nation. The final essence focussed on obtaining tickets, where some found it to be a complicating process while others had a surprisingly positive experience. From the experiences during the tournament there were again four essences. Firstly, participants had mostly positive experiences of attending the live matches. Secondly, participants made mention of the impressive organisation of the event. The third essence related to the enjoyable social interactions that they experienced. The final essence was a description of their experiences of the Vuvuzelas that came to be very popular during the tournament. From the experiences after the tournament, there were four essences. The first essence describes how there was a sense of unity among SA as a nation but it seemed to have faded quite quickly after the tournament. Secondly, the participants discovered a lot about themselves during the tournament and the essence of the positive experiences of socialising was once again prevalent. Finally, the participants were impressed with the improvements in infrastructure that left a physical legacy of a “once in a lifetime” event
Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2013.
gm2014
Psychology
UPonly

Ghosh, Prasenjit. "Discrete particulate description of elastic structures undergoing geometrically nonlinear deformation and dynamic particle interaction." Thesis, 2022. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/5765.

Full text
Abstract:
The mechanical behaviour of deformable bodies in a particulate environment has been an area of increasing interest across a wide spectrum of systems and scale. A composite ensemble of deformable structures and discrete particles involves coupling of component responses, large displacements of structures, and multiple dynamic interactions that lead to inherent contact nonlinearity. To describe these structures and their interactions with particles, we apply a particle simulation approach based on the discrete element method (DEM). There exist alternative frameworks too such as continuum modelling with techniques like finite element method (FEM), or a combination of continuum and discrete modelling, or lumped modelling with mass-spring systems. Owing to the convenience and robustness provided by a single approach, this thesis aims to develop a single framework with the discrete modelling approach. The mechanical behaviour of particulate models of slender elastic continua is first validated with their analytical or FEM counterparts, and then particle-structure interactions are considered. We develop elastically deformable particulate models of straight beams and shallow arches. We evaluate the geometrically nonlinear response of particulate beams under a variety of static, dynamic, and impact loading scenarios. We also model particulate arches and assess their ability to exhibit two force-free equilibrium states, namely bistability. To illustrate the utility of these particulate representations, we first consider a case study of an undulating beam in a particle medium. The dynamic beam-particle interactions propel the beam within the medium, resembling the self-propulsion of reptiles in granular environments. In another case study, we take up a relatively sparse environment of mobile particles and oscillating cantilever beams. The interplay between particles and beams is shown to drive particles for capture. We also demonstrate particle-arch interactions in bistable mechanisms that result in particle gripping and trapping. We draw insights from factors that regulate the governing dynamics of such coupled phenomena. Next, we model particulate thin films that undergo deflections in linear and geometrically nonlinear regimes and describe both plate-like and membrane-like behaviours. A notable instance of this particulate perspective of thin films occurs in the context of microscopic biological material such as cells and their organelle. We present in this context a discrete particulate description for the nucleus of a biological cell. A three-dimensional model that incorporates the nuclear envelope and chromatin-containing nucleoplasm is developed and subjected to micropipette aspiration. Our work on particulate systems is implemented within Altair EDEM, a commercial DEM software. While most available DEM packages, including EDEM, provide a ready-to-use interface for the modelling and analysis of granular and bulk materials, they lack similar modules for particulate structures. The preprocessing stage thus involves substantive customization to build algorithms for particle generation, contact physics, external couplings, and parameter definition appropriate to our studies. By customizing this process, we utilize the graphical interface capabilities of EDEM to simulate, readjust, and visualize the analysis of structures under applied forces and particle interaction. Taken together, the studies in this thesis facilitate a comprehensive investigation of the particulate approach’s efficacy to model a variety of deformable structures, capture geometric nonlinearity in their response, and simulate the interaction dynamics of coupled particle-structure systems.

Du, Plessis Elizabeth Susan Catherina. "Factors influencing managers' attitudes towards performance appraisal." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/19158.

Full text
Abstract:
An increasing number of reports indicate that managers are opposed to performance appraisal. It is important to understand why managers have favourable or unfavourable attitudes towards performance appraisal and it is necessary to investigate the causing factors of these attitudes. The aim of this research was therefore to gain a deeper understanding of the factors that influence managers’ attitudes towards performance appraisal. This study was conducted within the interpretive research paradigm and situated in a medium-sized organisation within the financial services industry. The sample was purposefully selected and the data were collected through in-depth interviews and naïve sketches. The data were analysed applying Tesch’s descriptive analysis method. The main findings indicated that managers who needed to conduct performance appraisals perceived and experienced performance appraisal as an uncomfortable and emotional process that might cause them to become defensive. Moreover, it was revealed that the managers experienced uncertainties about aspects of performance appraisal, such as the purpose of performance appraisal, what must be measured and frequency of performance appraisal. As a result of such uncertainties, managers might not always have the ability or readiness to conduct performance appraisals, especially when the performance appraisal contains negative performance feedback. Furthermore, the organisational context might put managers in an undesirable situation to distort performance ratings of employees in order to achieve organisational goals or the manager’s personal goals, which in turn influence the attitude of the manager. Abstract:
M.A.
Szasz (1961), in a book entitled, "The Myth of Mental Illness", argues about the age-old debate, whether the diagnosis of mental illness is culturally related or not. In today's multicultural milieu, clinicians are confronted with this same problem. For the purpose of the present qualitative study, Ancestral Possession (AP) and Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), will be considered. The initial purpose of the study was to explore the fields of Ancestral Possession (AP) and Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) amongst black subjects, and to explore how these two phenomena are understood within a cultural context. Due to practical problems encountered in finding a black subject diagnosed as suffering from MPD, the subject focus had to be slightly altered. The aim of the study was changed to investigating MPD, as a Western culture diagnosis, and AP, as an African culture diagnosis, and comparing these two phenomena. The phenomenological approach was used as a theoretical basis for the study. It was assumed that since this study focuses on subjective experiences, the phenomenological approach would be more applicable. Two case studies (MPD and AP) comprise the data of this study. A video tape, consisting of interviews of the two case studies, is part of the data, including a literature study on both phenomena. The data analysis focused on comparing the personal background of the two case studies and the manifestation and treatment of both phenomena within their cultural contexts. The differences and similarities that emerge, are discussed. It was found that there are some similarities and also some differences between the two phenomena. Similarities are found, for instance, in the symptom profile of the two phenomena. The core personality in MPD usually presents with a fragile appearance (physical and psychological) and will report losing time (having time that is unaccounted for, because other personalities had taken over). The same thing happens with isiguli (literally, patient), a person who is being called by the ancestors. She looks sick, she will find herself in places without knowing how she got there. In both phenomena the subjects appear tormented before integration. The two conditions are also alike in terms of their effect on the central personality. The ancestral spirits and the alter personalities seem to play the same role of enabling the core personality to be well-functioning. In terms of the differences found between the two phenomena, ancestral possession is socially approved in the African culture whereas multiple personality disorder is considered an illness from the Western perspective. The role of socio-cultural factors seems to complicate matters. As enculturation continues and white South Africans are becoming traditional healers, it would be interesting to see how many black South Africans will in future, be diagnosed as suffering from MPD as there are very few, if any, at present. In terms of etiological factors, MPD is usually a result of trauma whereas ancestral possession is a religious experience. The results were inconclusive in that some aspects, for instance, physiological manifestation of AP could not be clearly explained. This is due to the fact that there has not been any laboratory research done to examine the chemical and physiological changes of traditional healers when under the influence of ancestral spirits. As opposed to that, MPD subjects have been reported to have alter personalities that would indicate different EEGs and some other physiological differences.

101
School timetable has been a quite inconvenient issue, with widespread terms to be considered, and the curriculum arrangement results are affected by each and every one of above variables. Curriculum arrangement has been so to say a NP-hard problem of Non-Polynomial. Therefore, no perfect solution presented all along. Finding a better curriculum arrangement strategy , and computer system can be applied to process massive basic data, then curriculum arrangement issue can be improved, are the direction for this thesis to strive for. In this thesis , the primary school timetable problem is used to as a research model , and the Artificial Intelligent Method is as the research structure. In this study , the algorithm architecture is implemented by C language in addition to saving energy for curriculum arrangement and enhancing administrative efficiency, but also hoping to provide a curriculum arrangement activity of fulfilling humanization and rationalization. We use a large primary school as an example. The results show that this structure is feasible. Keywords: School timetable, Artificial Intelligent Method, NP-hard problem

Abstract:
103
This study aims to explore decision paths based on pricing by the most economically advantageous tender (MEAT) to government procurement of information services. Today, the government encourages affiliated agencies to adopt the MEAT criterion without setting a government estimate (i.e. payment of fixed price) for procurement of professional services, technical services, and information services. However, we discover that reality does not meet expectations. This paper will provide a description of conflicts frequently encountered during the government procurement of information services which adopts MEAT criterion with a set government estimate (i.e. payment of non-fixed price or cost) through literature review, providing readers with an overview of laws and regulations and analysis of the current situation, as well as actual cases. It will also explore the possible causes of the difference between the institutional aspect and actual implementation of MEAT regulations. Through the analysis of data, the study will highlight an interesting phenomenon occurring in the decision path based on pricing by MEAT to the government procurement of information services. The tenderer could submit a bid with an amount that is lower than the budget after determining the factors which maximize the advantage for both parties based on the budget amount, and use it as a fixed price. Doing so makes it possible to provide a product which meets the government’s requirement while allowing the deal to remain profitable for the bidder. Hopefully, the findings of this paper will inspire the government to adopt MEAT criterion without setting a government estimate for the procurement of information services.

Abstract:
98
The traditional retail data within major corporations contains resources waiting to be discovered. For example, from the consumer retail purchase data, one can discover consumer interest and by using association rules and marketing research. Thus we can discover similar products or new product ideas that can interest the same consumer. The main focus of this thesis is to find potential areas or areas of similar interest by using data mining on these traditional retail data. The findings will help one to understand consumer purchase trends and means of purchase. With the ability to find potential products to interest consumers, this can help business to generate sales and obtain profitability. In the recent years, internet has changed the business and retail trends. E-Commerce is a modern way of operating a business. It allows the use of technology to bring business and consumers together. Internet offers operating cost saving in comparison to traditional brick and mortar stores. It changes the way of consumer purchase products. We will start out the data mining process by understanding Frequent Pattern Tree (FP-Tree) and Frequent Pattern List. We will then compare the two processes, see the strength and weakness of each and study the possibility of the two processes complement.
