Abstract This article investigates the extent to which TED talks can be considered a narrative register. This study analyses ‘narrative versus non-narrative discourse’ (Biber 1988) in a corpus of TED talks (n = 2483). TED talks were found to be typically non-narrative (−2.47 mean). However, there was a great degree of variation, with approximately 10% of talks (n = 257) classified as narrative. When TED talks were compared to registers in prior studies they were close to academic prose and presented a similar pattern in terms of disciplinary variation, with ‘soft’ disciplines closer to narrati

The location of traffic crashes holds significance in understanding geographic crash safety and devising effective safety interventions. In this regard, analysts often conduct manual investigation by reading through lengthy text narratives to extract crash locations and cross-referencing them with geo-coordinates or descriptive location fields in crash reports. Despite being primary practice, it is error-prone and impractical for large datasets. To address these challenges, this study explores the utilization of Large Language Models (LLMs) to process extensive narrative volumes and identify c

The research originates from the ongoing discussions in Paraguay regarding the fate of its cities and territory, where issues related to urban and territorial planning seem to be recurrent. In these matters, we encounter the territory of the Cordillera de los Altos entering the metropolitan dynamics of Asunción. The relationship between these two territories dates back to the prehistoric and historical processes of human influence on the natural landscape. The RoL method is a visual narrative method that helps people tell stories of the past, present, and future. Individuals can use this method to introduce themselves in a fun and descriptive way. A group can use it to understand and reflect on the past and imagine the future of a project. Besides, it can also be used to build a shared view of a process over time while acknowledging different and perhaps contradictory perspectives. The method uses drawings rather than text, making it useful in groups that do not share a common language. Metaphors from a river are used to explore aspects of a sto
