Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines the impacts of climate change on three tropical crops and assesses the climate change adaptation options adopted by rural farmers in the region. The study was conducted among farming communities settled in three major ecological zones in Nigeria. Over 37 years of data on rainfall and temperature were analyzed to examine climate change impacts on three major crops: rice, maize, and cassava. Farmers’ adaptive capacity was assessed with a survey. Climatic data, crop yields, and survey data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The relation between rainfall/temperature and crop yields was examined using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results show a high variation in the annual rainfall and temperature during the study period. The major findings from this research is that crops in different ecological zones respond differently to climate variation. The result revealed that there is a very strong relationship between precipitation and the yield of rice and cassava at p <0.05 level of significance. The results further showed low level of adaption among the rural farmers. The study concludes that rainfall and temperature variability has a significant impact on crop yield in the study area, but that the adaptive capacity of most farmers to these impacts is low. There is a need for enhancing the adaptation options available to farmers in the region, which should be the focus of government policies.

AbstractSub-Saharan Africa is considered to be highly vulnerable to climate change-related disasters particularly drought. Farmers in Ghana have learnt to co-exist with it by resorting to various approaches. This study sheds light on farmers’ adaptation to drought in Ghana. The cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from a random sample of 326 farmers and six purposively selected lead farmers from six farming communities. Questionnaire and in-depth interviews were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed a significant variation between locations and use of drought adaptation approaches. The study showed that the most common drought adaptation measures comprise locating farms on riverine areas, drought monitoring, formation of farm-based organizations for dissemination of climate information, application of agro-chemicals, changing planting dates, cultivating different crops, integrating crop and livestock production, changing the location of crops, diversifying from farm to non-farm income-generating activities, and cultivation of early maturing crops. Therefore, it was recommended, among other things, that Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) should assist the government to construct small-scale irrigation facilities and provide drought-resistant crops to further boost the capacity of farming communities in Ghana.

This chapter explores the case study, which is a very common research method in the field of social sciences. Case studies are important because they provide the examination of samples of a larger atmosphere, therefore enabling researchers with a variety of possibilities: to deepen the analysis of a particular occurrence in the world, to contribute to an existing theoretical framework, and to serve as an instrument of comparative analysis. Although it might sound simplistic, the research framework for case studies usually has to satisfy a few key points. Case studies can be divided into separate categories: exploratory, descriptive, and explanatory. They are also directly related to the type of research question being posed from the traditional five types of survey questions: ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘how’, and ‘why’. One can often find case studies among both qualitative and quantitative approaches, focusing on a case study per se or on cross-case method.

The purpose of this article is to examine workplace cyberbullying as a cybercrime. Based on deterrence theory and social influence theory, this study builds a model of antecedents to prevent cyberbullying in workplaces. For this, this article conducts a survey of 305 Korean workers and uses SPSS 18.0 for hierarchical regression analysis. The results of this survey being, first, the certainty of detection prevents employees' intention to cyberbullying in the workplace while the severity of penalty and has no effect. Second, subjective norms and descriptive norms prevent employees' intention to cyberbullying in the workplace. The results show that social influence is more important to control members' behavior in workplace cyberbullying than corporate policy. And, this article is the first to investigate the preventers of employees' intentions to cyberbullying in workplace in the perspective of cybercrime.

Burnout syndrome (BS) and obesity have a high economic impact on different fields. This chapter presents a descriptive study of both conditions among middle and senior managers in the maquiladora industry of Ciudad Juarez. The Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey- was administered to six companies. A sample of 361 participants informed their weight and height. Five levels of Burnout were obtained. Obesity was studied according to the World Health Organization criteria. Results found that 29.8% is exempt from BS, 10.5% has low level, 12.9% has a middle level, 28.2% a fairly level and 18.5% an extreme level of BS. In addition, 34% of the sample suffers from some degree of obesity. Work psychosocial aspects and their effects on human capital development in the industrial sector are not sufficiently studied in developing countries so that to develop strategies for the prevention and effective handling of both BS and obesity.

The empirical strategy described here involves matching travel diary data to land-use characteristics for two different southern California regions. The first data set is from Orange County and nearby parts of suburban Los Angeles, and the other data are from San Diego. Each data set poses somewhat different opportunities and challenges in measuring the factors of interest, so we describe these in turn. The Orange County/Los Angeles travel diary data set includes data for 769 southern California residents. These were obtained from a 1993 survey administered as part of the Panel Study of Southern California Commuters. Because that survey includes each respondent’s street address, we were able to match the travel diary data to land-use variables from the 1990 census and from the Southern California Association of Governments (for the years 1990 and 1994). The travel diary covered a two-day period, and respondents were pre-assigned days, so trip making on all days of the week is represented in the data. Individual respondents were first contacted through their employer, and then for follow-up waves the same persons were contacted at home. The sample is employer based, and consequently the respondents are not a random sample of southern California residents. About half of the respondents worked at the Irvine Business Complex, a large, diversified employment center near the Orange County Airport, and the other half worked elsewhere throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The descriptive statistics shown in table 5.1 illustrate how the survey oversampled Whites, highly educated persons, and persons with high income. This suggests some caution is warranted in interpreting beyond these individuals. Yet restricting attention to an educated, upper-middle-income, largely suburban population still provides interesting information, because many of the new urban designs are intended for low-density, suburban environments with demographics similar to those in this sample. The dependent variable for the model is the number of nonwork automobile trips made by an individual during the two-day travel diary period.

YouTube has changed dramatically since 2005, both in look and platform functionality. There have also been many culturally and internationally relevant events that probably would have not received as much attention from the popular press without YouTube's video sharing and distribution power. This chapter presents current and original research on YouTubers' attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs about YouTube, using the research plan and model designed for the Bronx YouTube pilot study in 2009 described in detail in Chapter 7. New research in the areas of surveillance and learning in YouTube offers insight into how research participants (university students in New Jersey) use YouTube and what they think regarding its potential to help them learn. This chapter also offers observations on the research outcomes and potential future research possibilities in a growing body of scholarly work regarding online activity and the relationship between new technologies and people. As in the 2009 Bronx study, this chapter argues that, while YouTubers are aware of YouTube and Google surveillance strategies and are not necessarily in control of those strategies, they are unconcerned about surveillance unless money or email information might be unprotected. More work along the lines of focus groups and randomized experimental studies will provide better evidence from which generalized conclusions can be drawn regarding people and technology in the YouTube digital sphere. The New Jersey YouTube Experience research study focused on how YouTuber's learn and acquire all types of knowledge. The descriptive results indicate that, as suggested in the earlier Bronx study, YouTubers' obtain information from a variety of sources including professional academics, lay people, corporate interests and random commenters. YouTubers' learn at every level and people of all types are participating in transmitting knowledge. Generally, this happens with little immediate financial benefit although for-profit driven education and learning in YouTube is becoming more prevalent. While the knowledge creation in YouTube isn't all accurate, or even relevant, and sometimes comes with strong bias and personal agendas, this is also true in traditional education although many of us would like to think otherwise.

The study explored the use of mobile phones by the early childhood teachers of English language arts (ELA) in Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was used using an online survey to assess early childhood teachers' use of the mobile phone in their classrooms. Ninety-eight teachers who responded to the instrument online formed the sample for the study. The instrument entitled Mobile Phones in ELA Classrooms' Questionnaire (MP-ELA-CQ) was used to collect data for the study. Data were analyzed using percentage and Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficients. Results indicated that teachers—both preservice and in-service—need regular training in technology and education to help them effectively utilize mobile phones in their classrooms.

This chapter assesses university's students' views on team work with a specific research aim to investigate the key contributory factors that affect the students' satisfaction when undertaking group work. The data used in this study were derived from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data was collected via a questionnaire survey aimed at 95 undergraduate students. The data collected from the survey were analysed using descriptive statistics procedures. Findings from the study revealed that the most important contributory factors that affect students' satisfaction when undertaking group works are: setting of ground rules for the operation of the group and students having the same attitude towards work. It was also found that some students do not come to group meetings which also affects the students' satisfaction. Therefore, this study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the dynamics of team building and group works as it affects higher education students. Hence, preparing the students to be team players before they enter the world of work.
