Abstract:
<b>Background and aim</b> – Desert rhubarb (<i>Rheum palaestinum</i> Feinbr.), a rare perennial plant endemic to Jordan and southern Israel, grows in areas with very low annual rainfall. It produces large leaves, atypical for a desert plant, that are tightly attached to the ground. The leaves have a unique morphology thought to be involved in water catchment and drainage systems along the central stem. The objective of this study was to simulate the leaf morphology of the rhubarb and investigate its function as a 'condensation trap'.<b>Methods</b> – A field study was conducted on seven plants

Biochemical and mineral peculiarities of plants inhabiting desert and semi-desert areas may provide important information about the mechanism of their adaptability and reveal the prospects of their utilization. Rheum tataricum L., known for its high tolerance to drought, salinity, and nutritional deficiency, is the least studied species of wild rhubarb. Using biochemical and ICP-MS analysis, the antioxidant status and mineral composition of R. tataricum were determined. Extremely high levels of antioxidant activity (148–155 mg GAE g−1 d.w.), polyphenols (24.6–25.1 mg GAE g−1 d.w.) and caroteno

Khammash (2016) argued that self-irrigation occurs in the desert plant <i>Rheum palaestinum</i> Feinbrun, by collecting dew with its unique 3D leaf morphology and its extremely large leaves rather than collecting rainfall. We agree that collecting dew indeed has a theoretical potential to improve the plant's water economy. However, we suggest that collecting dew can act as an additional mechanism for collecting water rather than an exclusive one. The unknown relative contribution of these two parallel functioning self-irrigation mechanisms to the water economy of the desert rhubarb should be f

There are about 60 species of the genus Rheum L. (Polygonaceae) distributed mainly in temperate and subtropical Asia, with the largest number (38 species, including 19 endemics) recorded in China. All species of the genus are used as medicinal plants. According to modern pharmacology, the most important property of the rhubarb root is regulation of the stomach and intestine function, due to its laxa-tive effect; rhubarb also has antipyretic properties and antioxidant activity. The high content of dietary fibers provides protection against cardiovascular diseases, and vitamin K is valuable for

IntroductionFirmly located within the discourse of visible culture as the lofty preserve of art exhibitions and museum artefacts, the noun “curate” has gradually transformed into the verb “to curate”. Williams writes that “curate” has become a fashionable code word among the aesthetically minded to describe a creative activity. Designers no longer simply sell clothes; they “curate” merchandise. Chefs no longer only make food; they also “curate” meals.
