Architecture is the arena on which man's life unfolds, due to the constant changes taking place in life, deformability is demanded to increase the adaptability of modern Architecture. Thus, to achieve such deformability, research on the systematic hierarchy of architectures is carried out; indicating that the hierarchies are the intermediary of the inner transformation of the architecture and the formation process of architecture system is a process of gradual differentiation. With the development of the gradual differentiation process, the flexibility of architecture begins to fail while increasing its determinacy. The key point determining the adaptability of architectures lies in the inter-transformation between the various levels of sub-hierarchy systems. According to the complexity and hierarchy of the transformation, categorization and analysis with future study on the performance manifestation of architectural adaptability design are implemented.

Religious culture shapes the characters of space and it reflects people’s attitudes towards the relationships between people and gods. Every religious architecture, such as a temple or a church, demonstrates its physical connections with life. This paper focuses on comparing different countries’ religious architectures to better understand the dominant cultural elements which influence design concepts of these architectures. In Western cultures, the religious architecture format is the church. However, Tadao Ando designs the Church of the Light with oriental features. It changes western religious cultures to adapt to local conditions. Ando’s work is just one of many examples in which the local culture can transform religious architecture form with their own characters, and nake it become an iconic mark to represent their country. This paper, analyzing project thinking and development invovling a local citizen, user, artist, and architect, tries to find out how design concepts, decisions on site location, and construction method will be determined. In these case studies on architectural formats from all over the world, this paper uses valuable data to show what elements will be the most critical ones to influence people’s thinking about religious cultures and religious architectural transformation. Furthermore, in this research, it compares religious cultural characters between western and oriental regions. This research also answers questions about how cultures change local people’s behaviors. This is the most valuable point of religious architectures, because they can comfort people and mitigate their sorrow. The research demonstrates how religious cultures and understanding about life can further develop architecture forms. Local materials and conditions are key factors which greatly influence architectural designs. Moreover, this paper compares the latest technology and development of construction materials to illustrate how technology reshapes religious designs in our age. It links local cultures with contemporary architectures to help local architectures continue to develop with their unique characters instead of being eliminated by globalization.

This article describes the art and architectural research project Preemptive Architecture that uses artistic strategies and approaches to create bomb-ready architectural structures that act as instruments for the undoing of violence in war. In recent years, Operational Business Intelligence has emerged as an important trend in the Business Intelligence (BI) market. Majority of BI application architectures are bespoke in nature which have several architectural limitations like tightly coupled, static, historic, subjective, no performance measurement of business processes, limited user access, limited analytical processing, querying and reporting features. In this article, a generic functional architecture for Operational BI systems based on software architecture principles is presented. All functional modules of the system are derived from the key features of the system and by using top down approach of software design principles. The similar functional modules are grouped into sub-systems and a set of these sub-systems constitutes overall functional architecture. The proposed architecture overcomes the limitations of traditional BI architectures.

Software architectures promote development focused on modular functional building blocks (components), their interconnections (configurations), and their interactions (connectors). Since architecture-level components often contain complex functionality, it is reasonable to expect that their interactions will be complex as well. Middleware technologies such as CORBA, COM, and RMI provide a set of predefined services for enabling component composition and interaction. However, the potential role of such services in the implementations of software architectures is not well understood. In practice, middleware can resolve various types of component heterogeneity — across platform and language boundaries, for instance — but also can induce unwanted architectural constraints on application development. We present an approach in which components communicate through architecture-level software connectors that are implemented using middleware. This approach preserves the properties of the architecture-level connectors while leveraging the beneficial capabilities of the underlying middleware. We have implemented this approach in the context of a component- and message-based architectural style called C2 and demonstrated its utility in the context of several diverse applications. We argue that our approach provides a systematic and reasonable way to bridge the gap between architecture-level connectors and implementation-level middleware packages.

To provide modeling and simulation functionality as services is strategically leveraged in the defense domain and elsewhere. To describe and understand the context, the ecosystem, wherein such services are used and interoperate with other services and capabilities, one needs tools that capture the simulation services themselves as well as the capability landscape they operate in. By using the NATO Consultation, Command, and Control (C3) Taxonomy to structure architecture design in the NATO Architecture Framework (NAF), cohesive descriptions of modeling and simulation capabilities within larger contexts can be given. We show how a basic seven-step approach may benefit architecture work for modeling and simulation at the overarching, reference, and target architectural levels; in particular for (1) hybrid architectures that embed simulation architectures within a larger service-oriented architecture and (2) for architectural design of simulation scenarios. Central to the approach is the use of the C3 Taxonomy as a repository for overarching architecture building blocks and patterns. We conclude that the promotion of technical functionality as capabilities in their own right helps delineate simulation environment boundaries, helps delineate services within and outside the boundary, and is an enabler for defining the service concepts in cloud-based approaches to modeling and simulation as a service (MSaaS).

Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between the practice of architectural design and the media through which it is represented. It makes a consistent critical appraisal of the philosophical presumptions under which architectural theory is made, in particular, the relationship between theories of expression and representation. The thesis presents seven distinct projects by the author which developmentally explore the degree to which architecture is able to represent the sublime - in particular through the concept of horror. In this instance horror emerges as a category of excess that supervenes the uses of the term in the genres of film and literary studies. Within the thesis horror describes an (impossible) objective for representation The thesis argues that the environment within which these philosophical questions of 'effect' may most resonantly be explored is, ultimately, digital media. The author draws on contemporary commentary by Jacques Derrida and Georges Bataille, in particular Derrida's discussion of the Parergon and contemporary discussion of l'informe, the informal to support these arguments. It is within the apparently 'real' environments of virtual reality that the presentation of the mise-en-scene of horror may be explored. Immersive digital environments, it is argued, provide an appropriate level of freedom and direction for the exploration of the spatial experience of the abyss. The thesis concludes by presenting observations on the antinomy of aspirations that any materialist theory of architectural practice must attend to when working within digital media.

The term &ldquo<br>urban architecture&rdquo<br>has different meanings and is open to many interpretations. This thesis aims to highlight and further elaborate some definitions of &ldquo<br>urban architecture&rdquo<br>in which it is mainly characterized as architecture in the urban context. The Second Volume of Harvard Architecture Review on &ldquo<br>Urban Architecture&rdquo<br>is referred as a main source in discussing the content of the term. The concept of &ldquo<br>urban architecture&rdquo<br>can be identified in several theoretical contributions to the field of architecture. In this context, the themes &ldquo<br>urban artifact&rdquo<br>developed by Aldo Rossi and &ldquo<br>urbatecture&rdquo<br>developed by Bruno Zevi, are discussed in relation to &ldquo<br>urban architecture&rdquo<br>. In order to further clarify the concept, its relation to the fields of urban design, urbanism, and landscape urbanism is investigated. While it is distinguished from these fields, &ldquo<br>urban architecture&rdquo<br>is defined as an alternative architectural design approach and not as a new field. As an approach to architectural design that operates in an expanded field including landscape design and urbanism, &ldquo<br>urban architecture&rdquo<br>points to some strategies that allow to integrate works of architecture into their urban settings. Following this conceptual elaboration, the thesis aims at exploring the design strategies that characterize urban architecture. In this context, strategies related with landscape, infrastructure, and urban field are identified. The strategies based on these themes and their tools of operation are discussed through three case studies that cover Olympic Sculpture Park for the Seattle Art Museum, Kunsthal, and Borneo and Sporenburg.

Cette thèse a étudié l’usage des auralisations durant la phase de design de projets architecturaux. Cette technologie, qui consiste à rendre audibles des simulations numériques à partir de modèles acoustiques géométriques, a été beaucoup utilisée en recherche, allant d’études cognitives à l’évaluation de l’acoustique des salles de concert, en passant par des études archéoacoustiques permettant la conservation du patrimoine via la reconstitution de l’empreinte acoustique de lieux historiques. La question ici était donc d’évaluer la potentielle amélioration que l’usage des auralisa- tions apporterait durant la conception d’espaces architecturaux. En se basant sur la théorie de l’acceptabilité pratique, l’usage des auralisations a été étudié à partir de questionnaire et entretiens de consultants en acoustique, ainsi que l’observation d’un cas pratique d’utilisation, en collaboration avec Theatre Projects Consultants. Ces études ont permis l’identification des principaux usages des auralisations, ainsi que les difficultés rencontrées, tant déclarées qu’observées, freinant l’adoption par les consul- tants. L’une des nécessités pour favoriser cette adoption tient dans la fiabilité de la technologie, que ce soit les outils eux-mêmes, ou les rendus de ces auralisations. La stabilité de la perception auditive a donc été évaluée, comparant différents systèmes de restitution. La méthode de reproduction sonore pour commencer, en comparant un rendu Binaural traqué et un rendu Ambisonic. De même, l’influence du système de VR visuel pour des auralisations multimodales a été évalué. Une relative stabilité de notre perception auditive a été observée, avec toutefois un léger impact du système sur l’évaluation de l’impression d’enveloppement (LEV) et de la largeur apparent de source (ASW). Des efforts sur l’adaptabilité des outils d’auralisations, et le transfert de connaissances de la recherche á l’industrie sont nécessaires pour permettre de mieux intégrer les auralisations dans les pratiques des architectes et acousticiens<br>This thesis investigated the use of auralization in the design phase of architectural projects. While this technology, which consists of rendering audible numerical acoustical simulations, has been extensively used in research, from cognitive to human-computer interfaces to archeology to concert halls acoustics evaluation studies, only limited data existed on its use by acoustical consultants for acoustical design. The question was to evaluate if auralizations can improve the processes of acoustical design for the conception of architectural spaces. Based on the practical acceptability theory, the use of auralizations has been studied through questionnaire and interviews of acoustical consultants, as well as the observation of a practical case study project, conducted in collaboration with Theatre Projects Consultants. These enabled the identification of the main uses of auralizations, as well as the difficulties encountered that impede the adoption of the technology. One of the requirements for its adoption is the accuracy and reliability of both the results and the tools themselves. Therefore, the stability of auditory perception was assessed in perceptive studies along a set of subjective attributes, with auralizations rendered over different interfaces, including sound reproduction methods and VR visual interfaces. The two sound reproduction methods compared were head-tracked Binaural and Ambisonic while the VR visual devices compared were a HMD and a CAVE-light system. A relative stability of auditaptory perception was observed, while the perceived Envelopment and Apparent Source Width were slightly impacted by the rendering system in both cases. Efforts in the adaptability of auralization tools for use in architectural design and knowledge transfer from research to industry are still needed for a better integration of auralizations in architects and acousticians workflow

Due to global warming and depletion of fossil fuels, alternative sustainable fuel technology is essential. As a consequence of this need, many automotive original equipment manufacturers have started manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) as sustainable, zero-emission solution. This paper evaluates different architectures for EV design to establish a preferred architecture. A detailed literature study is outlined to evaluate production and concept proposals of many original equipment manufacturers, student projects, and autonomous electric cars. The different architectural aspects of these designs, such as mechanical and electrical technologies, are discussed. Starting with initial schematics, a theoretical model is developed for each of the EV drive train architectures. The study uses advanced modeling techniques to compare these architectures. Different drive train architectures are compared in the contexts of functionality, operation, manufacturability, and modularity. Abstract:
Many important technical innovations occur through changes to existing system architectures. To manage the balance between performance gains by the innovation and the risk of change, companies estimate the degree of architectural change an innovation option could cause due to change propagation throughout the entire system. To do so, they must evaluate the innovation options for their integration cost given the present system architecture. This article presents a new algorithm and metrics based upon eigenvector rotations of the architectural connectivity matrix to assess the sensitivity of a system architecture to introduced innovations, modelled as perturbations on the system. The article presents studies of the impact of changes on synthetic system architectures to validate the method. The results show that there is no single architecture that is the most amenable to introduced innovation. Properties such as the density of existing connections and the number of changes that modify intra- or inter-module connections can introduce global effects that are not known in advance. Hierarchical modular system architectures tend to be relatively stable to introduced innovations and distributed changes to any architecture tends to cause the largest eigenvector rotations.

Software architectures can be used as a vehicle to improve the study of quality properties in the early stages of development. This paper proposes an automatic mapping between the design of architectural components and the specification of DEVS atomic models with aims to evaluate all-purpose quality metrics. Then, we use the functional description of architectural components (that address functional requirements) to estimate the architecture adjustment to non-functional requirements. The guidelines for structuring the simulation models are defined starting from the design of high-level components. To illustrate the proposal, web-based architecture is used as proof of concepts.

Abstract:
This paper presents how complex system architecture lifecycles, such as that of cars, follow a similar S-curve shaped path as that of individual technological innovations. By applying this theory we show that today’s automotive industry has started a new chapter of architectural competition with similarities to its early history from 1885–1915 when steam, electric and internal combustion engine cars were competing to dominate the automotive market. Taking a historical perspective, we find that firms that organize their development activities to focus on bringing about architectural innovation are better placed in succeeding in the future market until a new dominant architecture emerges. The architecture lifecycle framework used in this study is constructed by means of a performance index. The index scores the performance of 91 cars of various architectures based on five overall system variables: power, weight, maximum velocity, fuel efficiency and the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Depicting architectural performance over time helps identify periods of architecture competition and dominance where historical agents to change can be identified. The key factors that brought about architectural competition in the early 1900’s involved a series of innovation breakthroughs in engine and fuel technologies. Today, a new wave of power train innovations is being triggered primarily by environmental regulatory demands to reduce vehicle emissions. Future research lies in presenting a methodology for selecting vehicle architectures early on in the product development cycle that are best suited for the market going forward based on a manufacturer’s goals and a cost-benefit analysis.

Prior research on methods and algorithms to create modules and modular architectures deal with minimizing interactions between modules and increasing the commonality between products. While these approaches are a good start and provide good suggestions for preliminary architecture, these algorithms ignore the fact that some design solutions cannot be placed in regions of high heat, high pressure, high magnetic fields, etc. The exclusion of such field effect constraints often results in architecture clustering algorithms forming impractical solutions. In this paper, we introduce a field based definition of modularity constraints that incorporate these practical embodiment considerations. We demonstrate the method via examples and a detailed case study in medical device industry. We find that the field based module definitions not only bring the constraints of fields to the attention of the designer, but it also enables new creative solutions through movement of the field boundaries over different functions or components. Generally, only the two endpoint set-of-functions need be at different field values, and the intermediary parts or functions connecting them can be in either field. We conclude with a set of architectural guidelines to bridge the gap between current work and practical architectural synthesis considerations.

This article introduces a new architecture of spherical parallel robot which significantly extends the workspace when compared to existing architectures. To this end, the singularity locus is studied and the design parameters are chosen so as to confine the singularities to areas already limited by other constraints such as mechanical interferences. First, the architecture of the spherical redundant robot is presented and the Jacobian matrices are derived. Afterwards, the analysis of the singularities is addressed from a geometric point of view, which yields a description of the singularity locus expressed as a function of the architectural parameters. Then, the results are applied to an example set of architectural parameters chosen in order to illustrate the advantages of the redundant architecture over current designs in terms of workspace.

This paper reports on an exploratory study of how the architecture of a software product evolves over time. Because software is embedded in many of today’s complex products, and it is prone to relatively rapid change, it is instructive to study software architecture evolution for general insights into product design. We use metrics to capture the intrinsic complexity of software architectures as they evolve through successive generations (version releases). We introduce a set of product representations and metrics that take into account two important features used to manage the complexity in software products: layers and modules. We also capture organizational data associated with the product under development. We propose a three-step approach for the analysis and illustrate it using successive versions of an open source product, Ant. One of our findings is that software architectures seem to evolve in a non-linear manner similar to the S-shaped curve that characterizes technology evolution at the industry level. We also find several parallel patterns among architectural and organizational dynamics. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Specifying the product platform and family architecture to support product varieties can be a challenging task for companies. Especially when various viewpoints have to be considered which include product variety, materials, manufacturing complexity, assembly complexity, average component count commonality, assembly sequence and late point differentiation. Consequently there is a need for reasoning to balance multiple viewpoints in the case of product families for the development of good architecture. In this paper we present a product family architecture design approach that can be applied to develop efficient product family architectures for a given set of product functions, while considering multiple viewpoints. In order to identify the efficient product family architecture(s) a three phase approach is presented: (1) Generating a set of feasible module architectures of options for each product function; (2) Combining the feasible module architectures and evaluating the product family architectures to identify candidate product family architectures with high evaluation scores; and (3) Improving the selected product family architecture. The product family architecture design approach is demonstrated using a coffeemaker product family.

As an emerging field, Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) aims to reduce or eliminate manual operations that require expertise in machine learning. In this paper, a graph-based architecture is employed to represent flexible combinations of ML models, which provides a large searching space compared to tree-based and stacking-based architectures. Based on this, an evolutionary algorithm is proposed to search for the best architecture, where the mutation and heredity operators are the key for architecture evolution. With Bayesian hyper-parameter optimization, the proposed approach can automate the workflow of machine learning. On the PMLB dataset, the proposed approach shows the state-of-the-art performance compared with TPOT, Autostacker, and auto-sklearn. Some of the optimized models are with complex structures which are difficult to obtain in manual design.
