This paper presents an improved design methodology for shield tunnels. Here, a new framework for three-dimensional analysis of shield tunnel “performance” (defined herein as the structural safety and serviceability of each tunnel ring) is developed, which considers the effect of the longitudinal variation of input parameters on the tunnel performance. Within this framework, random fields are used to simulate the longitudinal variation of input parameters, and the three-dimensional problem of shield tunnel performance is solved through a two-stage solution involving a one-dimensional model (for

The choice among a longitudinal, mixed longitudinal, or cross-sectional design is often called for in educational and psychological research. The problem of choosing the most efficient design to estimate polynomial parameters for time-structured data is considered, and the comparison of the efficiencies shows that the assumed degree of the polynomial is crucial for the selection of the most efficient design. When the degree is much smaller than the number of time points and the correlations between adjacent time points are not too large, cross-sectional and mixed longitudinal designs are more

Potential shortcomings in applicable classification society rules are addressed, and possible solutions at both the design and repair stage are offered.

AbstractA design rationale is a representation of the reasoning behind a design concept, explaining why the solution is designed the way it is. This makes design rationale a critical part of concept development. However, there is little exploration on how to build a design rationale. This study sheds light on professional designers’ reasoning in conceptual design, as we examine how design rationales for different concepts are built based on a longitudinal study in the context of two design studios. Particularly the study provides insight into how a design rationale is initiated, matured and fi

However the design of flare and landing control systems with a suitable performance and a high level of reliability remains a very difficult task. In the present scenario, the increasing in the landing capacity of airports is mandatory by limiting the time each aircraft occupies the runway. To limit the occupancy time, the reduction of touchdown zone is essential since landings too close of the exit could result in a missed exit and therefore in a decreasing of landing rate. This thesis describes the design, maintenance and statistical analysis involved in undertaking a Longitudinal Survey. A longitudinal survey (or study) obtains observations or responses from individuals over several times over a defined period. This enables the direct study of changes in an individual's response over time. In particular, it distinguishes an individual's change over time from the baseline differences among individuals within the initial panel (or cohort). This is not possible in a cross-sectional study. As such, longitudinal surveys give correlated responses within individuals.

Surveys often require monitoring during data collection to ensure progress in meeting goals or to evaluate the interim results of an embedded experiment. Under complex designs, the amount of data available to monitor may be overwhelming and the production of reports and charts can be costly and time consuming. This is especially true in the case of longitudinal surveys, where data may originate from multiple waves. Other such complex scenarios include adaptive and responsive designs, which were developed to act on the results of such monitoring to implement prespecified options or alternatives

We use a total survey error approach to examine and make recommendations on how to adjust for non-sampling error in longitudinal, mixed-mode surveys. Using data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), we examine three major sources of non-sampling error: telescoping, mode effects, and fatigue. We present an assessment of each source of error from a total survey error perspective and propose alternative adjustments to adjust better for this error. Findings suggest that telescoping and fatigue are likely sources of error in the NCVS, but the use of mixed-modes is not. Furthermore, b
