Cartner, Kelly. "CASE STUDY ON INCLUSIVE DESIGN AND OPERATIONS AT ONE CAMPUS RECREATION CENTER." Scholarly Commons, 2018. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/3536.

Full text
Abstract:
The case study highlights the evaluation of one campus recreation center in terms of its inclusive design and operation on the basis of physical disability inclusion. Because of the plethora of barriers in campus recreation centers, those with physical disabilities are limited in their recreation choices and do not take part in recreation as their able-bodied counterparts. This study measures, observers, and evaluates one campus recreation center to determine its level of inclusiveness for those with physical disabilities. The AIMFREE survey was conducted along with observations and extensive interviews with staff that run the campus recreation center and those with physical disabilities that have attended the recreation facility. Results from six interviews, a focus group, the AIMFREE survey, and observations have yielded four main themes. The environment lacks inclusivity that results from financial, attitudinal, and social barriers. Attitudinal barriers to inclusivity occur at three main levels: administration, the staff and users of the facility. As a result, the recreation center is also not socially constructed for inclusivity. The goal of this research is to create change in the studied setting. As a result of investigating inclusivity at one recreation center, several areas of improvement emerged and can be used to implement change at campus recreation centers alike.

Abstract:
The thesis was preceded by a specialized atelierwork "architectural study of BMX track of the Favorit Brno. Further elaboration of the architectural and urban study of the sports complex in Komárov with the presumption of the dominant of the cycling hall. Evaluation of existing buildings and newly designed sports facilities. The diploma thesis deals with the development of a new concept of the area, where it will have its place for both professional and recreational sports. The aim of the proposal is to create a significant area both professional and recreational sport. The main part of the work is devoted to the design of o new cycling stadium owned but TJ Favoritisms Brno. The hall should have sufficient capacity and facilities to hold international sporting events in cycling. At the same time it should be useful for smaller races and other events. Another requirement is that the stadium can provide enough facilities for the TJ Favorit Brno cycling club. The home base is currently a cycling stadium at the Brno Exhibition Grounds. This stadium is currently inadequate, serving only as a training course. It does not meet conditions of the international Federation od UCI. The design of the variable space of the hall deserves a further attention at least, because it will serve athletics of other sporting events. The cycling stadium is located in the northern part of the grounds. It place emphasis on the scattered surfaces in the immediate vicinity of the stadium, easy orientation and layout of entries from all sides of the object, separation of athletes from spectators. The main expressive element is two masses, one of which allows the public to climb the ramp along the perimeter of the stadium to lookout points. From the ramp you can see the action inside the stadium. The attractiveness of the entire area is enhanced by the proposed traffic playground and bombrack. The total area will be separated from traffic. 3 new car parks will be built in the area.

Abstract:
The poor performance of the FDPN teams and the lack of adequate sports infrastructure, linked to poor urban design has raised the need to strengthen these points and a new place that functions as both urban and sports landmarks. Within this phenomenon, the IPD, the FDPN and the Municipality of Callao have been directly affected due to the deficit of both public and sports and interlinked spaces. Adding this problem to the general need for public space in the city, it was decided to create a sports center that will function as an equipment for the district and provide adequate sports for competitions and results. The project emphasizes the idea of the link and integration. The idea is to generate an atmosphere of fraternization, inspiring and raising awareness among athletes of all levels through mutual communication, linking with each other. This is achieved through a network of binding spaces, where the congregation and meeting of experienced athletes is encouraged, and amateurs experience sensations produced by tectonics and contact with natural elements. In addition, the project works an innovation with materiality. Laminated wood is largely used as toppings. The use of laminated wood is something new in this type of projects for the country. The idea stems from having a coverage with which it is less impactful on the environment as well as a more resistant in case of earthquake and fire.

Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis focuses on the development of wireless, real time performance monitoring technology within the resistance training domain using a user-centred design methodology. The functionality of current performance monitoring technology and differences in monitoring ability is investigated through comparative force platform, video and accelerometer testing and analysis. Determining the complexity of resistance training exercises and whether performance variable profiles such as acceleration, velocity and power can be used to characterise lifts is also investigated. A structured user-centred design process suitable for the sporting domain is proposed and followed throughout the research to consider the collection, analysis and communication of performance data. Identifying the user requirements and developing both hardware and software to meet the requirements also forms a major part of the research. The results indicate that as the exercise complexity increases, the requirement for sophisticated technology increases. A simple tri-axial accelerometer can be used to monitor simple linear exercises at the recreational level. Gyroscope technology is required to monitor complex exercises in which rotation of the bar occurs. Force platform technology is required at the elite level to monitor the distribution of force and resultant balance throughout a lift (bilateral difference). An integrated system consisting of an Inertial Measurement Unit (both accelerometer and gyroscope technology) and a double plate force platform is required to accurately monitor performance in the resistance training domain at the elite level.

Abstract:
The present research and architectural project search the application of the theory of blurring limits proposed by the architect Toyo Ito, in sport architecture typology, which has been called “Sport Centre”. The objective is to counter the current situation of this type in Peru, which has a predisposition to place physical urban limits that are disconnected from the environment. For this, it searches to generate interior-exterior connection through the blurring limit concept public spaces and different degrees of permeability in the structure, spatial, form and functionality from the building. The project will be in Villa María del Triunfo and will be of a public and district category. It will be cataloged as “Sport for all”. This is a social initiative that has the objective to reach users of all ages into the influence radius. On the other hand, the sports will be focused on massification, recreational, training and competitive sports in a non-federated category. Finally, the flexibility of the sport halls and public outdoor spaces will allow for the other uses that are compatible with sport, generating a greater contribution to the community of the area.

Abstract:
Wireless applications have become a common part of daily life. Whether it is mobile phones, the Wi-Fi router at home, the keycard which has replaced the car key, a radio frequency identification access system to a building or a Bluetooth headset for your computer or phone, the means of modern wireless data exchange is an omnipresent technology. In sports, the market is in its infancy for wireless, technical applications or gadgets. Only heart rate monitors and GPS watches are currently used by recreational athletes. Even though most of the larger sports equipment companies regularly launch new products related to sports performance monitoring and mobile phone technology, product innovation leaps are rare.In this work the design of a wireless sports performance measurement platform is presented. Using the example of kayaking, this platform is configured as a paddle performance measuring system, the Kayak XL System, which can monitor propulsive paddle force, paddle kinematics and boat velocity, interalia. A common mobile phone platform has been chosen as the user interface for this system. The design approach focussing on user requests, demands and expectations in combination with the process of iterative technical development are unveiled in this thesis. An evaluation of the system is presented and the work is finalised with an overview of further systems which have been designed based on the developed measurement platform. The Kayak XL System is a flexible system designed to be mounted onto any standard kayak paddle and installed in any competition kayak. Versatility, unobtrusiveness and usability were major design concerns. The developed system consists of four modules plus a software which has been designed for Android mobile phones. The phone communicates with each of the four modules trough Bluetooth radio. These four modules are also referred to as nodes and have specific measurement purposes. Two nodes have been designed to measure paddle force and kinematics, one node has the purpose to measure foot stretcher force and boat motion data, and the fourth node enables a more convenient method of calibrating paddle force measurement. The fourth node is therefore only needed prior to performance data acquisition. Results show that paddle and foot stretcher force can be measured with a resolution below 1N after calibration. Installing the paddle nodes on a previously configured paddle without repeated calibration is facilitated with the compromise of a doubled error margin. The default sampling frequency is set to 100 Hz and can, like all system parameters, be configured on the mobile phone. Real-time computation of complex performance parameters is only limited by the phone CPU. The system adds twice 109 g to the paddle and approximately 850 g to the kayak, excluding the mass of the mobile phone

"The room is not only the beginning of architecture: it is an extension of self. If you think about it, you realize that you don't say the same thing in a small room that you say in a large room. Function is the first priority of designing architecture. Function lets architectural space serve human body movement properly. Today, there are many sport centers( gyms) for people to choose. Most of the gyms are simply rooms with machines. Athough their spaces can fulfill the basic demands of a workout gym (function), the function of gym design is not only to give people spacce to work out, but slao to use the architectural space to improve exercise performance. As a bodybuilder and powerlifter for seven years, I have competed in bodybuilding. I am also planning to compete in powerlifting. So, I want to use my knowledge and experience of training to imrove the exercise performance through design of the architectural space.

Van, Slingerland Krista. "Design, Implementation, and Evaluation of a Sport-Focused Mental Health Service Delivery Model Within a Canadian Centre for Mental Health and Sport." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/42792.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall aim of this Participatory Action Research (PAR; Chevalier & Buckles, 2013; Lewin, 1946) project was to design, implement, and evaluate a specialized sport-focused mental health service delivery model for competitive and high-performance athletes, integrated within a broader Canadian Centre for Mental Health and Sport (CCMHS). A transformative mixed methods research design (Cresswell, 2014) guided by the PAR approach was employed across three phases during which (a) a sport-specific mental health service delivery model for competitive and high-performance athletes was collaboratively designed by stakeholders (Design Phase [Study 1]), (b) the model was pilot-tested within the CCMHS (Implementation Phase [Study 2]), and (c) the model was evaluated to understand whether practitioners and service-users perceived the care delivered / received within the model to be acceptable and appropriate (Evaluation Phase [Study 3]). Design Phase (Study 1). The purpose of study 1 was to (a) perform an environmental scan of the Canadian mental health care and sport contexts, and (b) design a sport-focused mental health service delivery model for competitive and high-performance athletes within a broader CCMHS. To meet these objectives, 20 stakeholders from the sport and mental health sectors explored (a) the availability and effectiveness of mental health care for competitive and high-performance Canadian athletes, and (b) the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with creating a CCMHS, via two iterations of stakeholder-led focus groups (Rio-Roberts, 2011). The resulting data informed a subsequent Group Concept Mapping (GCM; Burke et al., 2005; Kane & Trochim, 2007; Rosas & Kane, 2012) activity undertaken by stakeholders, which produced an actionable framework (i.e., concept map) organized into six clusters that visually represented the elements (e.g., services, personnel, organizational structures) that stakeholders deemed important to include in the sport-focused mental health care model (e.g., bilingual services, a triage system, sport-specialized practitioners). In addition, the results revealed that misconceptions about the competitive and high-performance population’s mental health and experience of mental illness were widespread and required clarification before significant advances could be made. This led the group to develop six principles designed to establish a common language and understanding upon which to build effective models of mental health care, improved programming, and strategic education for Canada’s competitive and high-performance athletes, coaches, and organizations (Article 1). The framework that emerged from the GCM activity served to guide the remainder of the project, and supported actions (e.g., develop eligibility criteria to access services, hire a team of mental health practitioners with sport competencies [i.e., CCMHS Care Team]) to build the CCMHS and test the model during the Implementation Phase (Article 2). Implementation Phase (Study 2). The purpose of study 2 was to pilot test the mental health service delivery model designed during the first phase of the research project. To do so, an illustrative case study (Keegan et al., 2017; Stake, 1995, 2005) was carried out to demonstrate how (i.e., intake, referral, and service delivery processes) the CCMHS Care Team provided mental health care to a high-performance athlete, and what outcomes resulted from this process. Data to inform the case study was gathered through a review of the service-user’s clinical documents (e.g., intake summary, session notes), and qualitative interviews (n = 2) with the athlete’s Collaborative Care Team lead and the CCMHS Care Coordinator. Document analysis (Bowen, 2009) was used to organize the details of the case found within clinical documents under the categories of the case study framework (i.e., intake and referral process, service-user description, integrated care plan, and outcomes), while a conventional descriptive content analysis (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005) served to extract salient data from the interviews to further build out the case study. Results revealed that sport significantly influenced the onset and experience of mental illness for the athlete service-user. The lead practitioner’s sport-specific knowledge played a significant role in the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of this athlete given the nature of the athlete’s concerns and high athletic identity. Findings support the notion that specialized mental health care models and teams are necessary to address sport-related factors that can pose unique threats to the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in athletes (Article 3). Implementation Phase (Study 3). The purpose of study 3 was to evaluate the acceptability and appropriateness of the mental health service delivery model designed during Phase 1 and implemented during Phase 2. Qualitative data from three sources (CCMHS practitioners, CCMHS service-users, and CCMHS stakeholders) were collected and analyzed using a multi-step, multi-method process, including16 one-on-one semi-structured interviews with CCMHS practitioners (n = 10) and service-users (n = 6), and a meeting with CCMHS stakeholders (captured via meeting minutes). In addition, 47 documents (e.g., clinical, procedural) created during the implementation phase of the project by CCMHS team members (i.e., practitioners, stakeholders, members of the board of directors) were used to triangulate the other data (Carter, Bryant-Lukosius, DiCenso, Blythe, and Neville, 2014). The Framework Method (Gale et al., 2013; Ritchie and Spencer, 1994) was used to analyze, synthesize, integrate, and interpret the dataset. The deductive data analysis approach taken was guided by the seven components of acceptability developed by Sekhon and colleagues (2017), and the Canadian Medical Association’s definition of appropriate care. Findings showed that the care provided and received within the CCMHS service delivery model was perceived to be acceptable and appropriate, and each component of the model uniquely contributed to practitioner and service-user experiences. For example, the collaborative interdisciplinary approach contributed to the ethicality of the model, promoted the professional development of team members, and enabled Pan-Canadian service provision. The sport-centered nature of care was perceived to enhance the ethicality of services delivered, effectiveness of care, and affective experience of service-users. Implications for further research and practice were discussed in light of areas of the model that emerged as needing improvement (e.g., prohibitive cost of care, practitioner burden from collaborative processes and procedures). Overall, the findings of the research project demonstrate that collaborative approaches to inquiry and practice can be successfully applied in sport to guide stakeholders in developing and testing novel models to improve the health outcomes of sport participants. The research also shows that an interdisciplinary team of practitioners can successfully deliver sport-focused mental health care that is acceptable and appropriate to service-users. Lastly, the project provides data on the first known empirical project to design, implement and evaluate a specialized mental health service delivery model applied nationwide in person and virtually with competitive and high-performance athletes experiencing mental health challenges and symptoms of mental illness.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the development of an interdisciplinary design incubator and community business center in Richmond, Virginia through the adaptive reuse of a retired, historic school building. In contrast to the deteriorating conditions of Patrick Henry School, renewed growth abounds in its extraordinary site surroundings—the 105 acres of Forest Hill Park, which serves as the virtual backyard of the school building. This dualism provided a prime opportunity for discovering the design possibilities in connecting a built space to its physical surroundings and for giving meaningful new life to an abandoned space.

Abstract:
Consider the construction of a perspective drawing. The perspective is made by drawing lines between a point of origin and several focal points. A series of lines connect the focal points to one another. The culmination of lines drawn from origin to focal point and focal point to focal point describes a place. The perspective is a view, or window into this place. The relationship of these three elements - the origin, focal points, and view - is analogous to the development of a architectural project. The origin is a point of beginning. Each architect brings a set of experiences and ideas to the project. The project springs from the architectsâ knowledge and ideals. The focal points involve the design development of a project. They relate to the areas of study and discovery for the project. Some foci are specific to a site or program. Some foci further investigate design intentions and how they relate to a given program. The links between foci create a place. Each drawing or description of this place is a view into the project. This thesis outlines the origins, focal points and views of a design for a visitorsâ center located in southwestern Virginia.

The evolution in the lifestyle of people from the ancient times to present can be seen in the change in the amount of physical activity exerted in everyday lives. Until now, the development of civilization to enhance scientific and technological knowledge, standards of living, as well as urbanization, have resulted to densely populated urban areas, pollution and stress that has gradually altered the people’s lifestyle into a more sit and less move environment. According to the World Health Organization, the lack of physical activity has climbed to the fourth place in the causes of global death. The improved consciousness led to the pursuit of physical and mental health. Take Tainan as an example, although a lot of sports parks exist, there is a lack in the diversity of the park’s contents. With this, the combination of a sports center and outdoor space in urban places will promote physical activities by providing a wider range in the variety of offered sports activities. The set of activities offered will be based on the surrounding environment of the complex and will be accessible to a wide range of people like the young, elderly, and the people with disabilities in reference to sports center studies offered domestically and internationally. The goal is to design the Tainan Sports Center that will offer diverse sets of activities and promote physical and mental health.

Under the serious influence that national economic growth becomes slower and the government contracts a loan to build constructions, outsourced operation s of the sports facilities has become an available program that government authorities consider financial condition and improve sports facilities. However, the success of sports facilities construction doesn’t mean the later operation will succeed. Domestic sports centers often neglect the needs of future operation during designing and planning period, resulting in the condition those facilities can’t meet the needs of operation after finishing the sports centers construction. If the government can merge the needs of sports facilities management into planning, designing, and construction stages in advance through the management process of “project life cycle” when building sports centers in the future, and do all stages management well. Then we can predict the condition that facilities present conditions doesn’t meet operation needs will decrease. The purpose of this study is to provide public sectors the advanced planning of private management of public management, we starts from objective perspective and provide the operators retrofit the existed sports centers for reference. We find out the sports centers produces influence on the relationship between future OT projects management execution and using factors. This study used literature analysis, content analysis and experts’ interviews as methods and took “New Taipei City San Chong Civil Sports Center” as the object of operation present condition and the research we used. Through physical education, and literature analysis, we realized the planning and development procedure of domestic sports centers; and through management managers, experts’ interview these two perspectives to analyze “the availability of designing specifications of facilities spaces”, “the permanent operation of spaces centers” to synthesize the most proper operation structure and provided public sector for future reference, accumulating the basis of sports centers optimization and the later best operation management. The study results showed that we provided the later period operation perspective of sports centers for reference: through the overall analysis after operation, we knew sports centers operation planning development period. Then we could deal operation management outsourced bidding in advance, through operators and experts, realizing the applicability of sports centers spaces and provided suggestions and joined designing. Hence, we could avoid the sports facilities which government outsourced in advance didn’t pertain to the later operation. Through interviews and we reviewed excellent cases, realizing the comment from the perspective of sports centers operators, evaluating the goodness and badness of using spaces, the relationship between users of sports centers and using spaces, then we could provide planning, designing of the OT project of sports centers in future, improvements of spaces facilities or operation for reference.

Service design encompasses multiple analysis tools and methods. More specifically, customer journey canvas and previous, current, and next process chain network analysis are two effective tools for reviewing services, as they facilitate the examination of the entire service system. These analysis tools were used for a semi-structured interview held at the Xinzhuang Sports Center, New Taipei City, Taiwan, wherein the industrial environment of the sports center and its consequent service design strategies were discussed. This led to the following conclusions about the industrial environment: 1.existing public sports and their consumption patterns influenced industrial development; 2.suppliers formed the dominant factor of profitability; 3.competitors with the same product or service offering posed a considerable threat to the organization; and 4. the complementary strengths of collaborators proved beneficial in enhancing the organization’s competitive edge. It was also noted that, prior to the service offering: 1. marketing strategies should be diversified and kept abreast of the times; 2.an amicable and friendly environment could enhance brand image; and 3.customer experiences could influence service expectations. During the service offering: 1.customer emotions could affect their perceptions of the service offering; 2.a dirty or messy environment along with damaged equipment could lead to service failures; and 3.unidentifiable processes could lead to customer complaints. Post service offering: 1.listening to the voices of customers would enhance customer loyalty; 2.the digital age would enable the community platform to be an important medium for people to maintain relationships; and 3.positive service experience could improve a customer’s willingness to share his or her experiences. Some additional points that emerged from the PCN analysis were: 1.the formulation of a standard operating procedure (SOP) can reduce service failures; 2.the organization’s unique value proposition may be established by means of a differentiation strategy; 3.the integration of stakeholders’ resources may improve organization competitiveness; and 4.the implementation of a process positioning strategy can mitigate service failures. In conclusion, the following recommendations were made: 1.the government should formulate policies that aligned with actual conditions. From an internal operation perspective, the case organization was advised to 2.shape the brand culture such that it has an emotional connect, through attractive presentations; 3.value customer contact points, minimize service failures; and 4.establish a robust information system, launch integrated platforms, implement related management practices, and propose follow-on research.

Exercise is an activity that urban citizens need to do every day. After a long day at work, urban citizens often go to the community sports center to do different kinds of exercises in their spare time. The purpose of this research study is to initiate connection and interaction between exercise and people through digital technology. This study combines Internet platform and cloud information with innovative service design methods to improve exercise processes. In addition, it observes and studies pain points, barriers, and service gaps of existing sports center website services. The framework for the research regarding the community sports center mobile website is planned based on "sports center", "service design", "human-machine interface" and "user experience". The research hopes that sports centers and facilities are designed from the perspective of “user experience” and propose new solutions on a human-centered approach. Aiming at combining service design and cloud information technology to improve sports center services with service design and integrate online and offline service processes. This research study is a two-stage experiment based on the double diamond design process: (1) The first stage is the pilot experiment: the study of interface operability, adopting the method of non-participatory observation and questionnaires. Then, analyses of time performance and System Usability Scale (SUS) as well as the Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction (QUIS) serve as the foundation for prototype design of apps. First of all, the research makes preliminary comparisons among interfaces of three sports centers, namely Shihlin Sports Center, Nangang Sports Center, and Beitou Sports Center. Experiments are conducted in single-factor group approach. (2) As for the second stage of the experiment verification, the research process is divided into two steps: (a) Analysis through "semi-structured interviews", "Personas" and "customer journey maps". (b) Invite 8 users to conduct new prototype interface testing, design verification and evaluation. Finally, a sports center service blueprint integrating online and offline functions is generated. The results show that: (1) There are significant differences in task performance among the interfaces of the three sports centers. The interfaces of Shihlin Sports Center and Nangang Sports Center have graphic illustrations when searching for exercise courses and swim lesson curriculum. Thus, they are more suggestive to the subjects while searching for the curriculum. (2) There are no significant differences between the SUS analysis and QUIS analysis, indicating that the subjects are not satisfied with all three existing interfaces. Graphic designs in the three interfaces are not clear, and the functions are inconsistent. This study suggests that a user friendly interface for both novice and experienced users should be designed with easy-to-search shortcuts that place the main function at the bottom of the home page. Therefore, it is convenient and easy for users to search. (3) The research recommends broadcasting the number of available equipment in the sports centers on the apps. Furthermore, the introduction of the gym or the trainers should be added to encourage people to participate in courses in sports centers. Abstract Built in 1972, Chung Hsing Hall was an important art space at that time in Taiwan. It has been nearly fifty years. In recent years, the old building and space have become inadequate for use. It has been transferred to Physical Education Office, National Taiwan University of Sport. Therefore, the dismantling and rebuilding project is proposed to turn Chung Hsing Hall into the dancing center of NTUS. There have been more art spaces in Taichung these years, such as National Taichung Theater, Taichung City Tun District Art Center, and Chung shan Hall. To increase the different types of art space, it is proposed that Chung Hsing Hall could be used as the teaching, practice, and performance space for Department of Dance, NTUS, to enhance the cultivation of the dance talents in central Taiwan. The acoustic simulation and analysis are made in the interior acoustic space of the hall. The simulation is analyzed in terms of the three items as follows: sound pressure level (SPL), articulation index C80, and reverberation timeT_60. These three are the research indexes of the acoustic space. The computer simulation research is done with Sample 1, to set up the acoustic shells on the ceiling of the original design, and Sample 2, to change the ceiling shape directly without setting up the acoustic shells, to analyze the pros and cons of the result. The design result aims at the art spaces in Taichung providing a variety of spaces for art and cultural activities and increasing the art and cultural atmosphere in Taichung. The research and analysis of the acoustic simulation will help create a better acoustic space for the interior of the hall, level up the humanistic literacy of this area, and encourage the foot traffic.

Abstract:
This dissertation is not only about the production of a building: it is rather a progressive report, which documents the process and development of my personal manifesto of the inter-relationships between: the social and physical effects of sport activities and people with disabilities, in public open spaces in the city. It aims to serve as an instrument to demonstrate the insight of my experiences, from taking a contemporary social issue (segregation of disabled people from the main society) and urban issues (lack of interests and abandonments of public park spaces in our city) into architectural theories. The research did not begin from a particular point towards a specific building type or programme; instead, I located the base of the research by reinterpreting a personal experience and looking into a specific social/contextual condition. It begins with an assessment of people with disabilities and the built environments in the form of interviews, surveys and academic research. The aim of this exercise is to provide first hand contact with disabled peoples’ needs and priorities. Then the theoretical research which revolves around the notion of public safety in the park - one of the major reasons which decrease the willingness of the public to use it. Together with the findings derived from site analysis and precedent studies, I will then consolidate the arguments by developing an experimental architectural prototype which directly aims to substantiate the theory, and the building structure itself will be the projector that materializes the programme into real context and thus gives justification to my manifesto.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to determine the significance of sport in society and its influence on the urban fabric and architecture. The project investigates the relationship between the built form and sport in the design of an urban framework and High Performance Centre for Kings Park, Durban. More specifically, the investigation has three primary objectives, ranging from the macro to the micro context or from the broad to the more specific, (Social, Urban and Architectural). The first aim will explore the social aspects of sport and its influence on culture, specifically with regard to nation building in South Africa. Secondly the focus narrows to the use of the sports event as a means of generating an urban intervention which uplifts an area of ‘lost space’ within the Kings Park Precinct. The final point focuses on creating a relevant and meaningful architectural response, which is responsive to both its users and the surrounding context. The design of the proposed urban and architectural intervention will be facilitated through the investigation of recent literature, theories, precedent and case studies, and personally conducted interviews with informed professionals. This research will determine a relevant architectural typology which is responsible and appropriate to its context. The design process becomes a reaction to defined internal and external stimuli with inherent restraints and opportunities, in which the end result becomes a synthesis of multiple inputs, generating a unique hybrid architecture.
