The flail mower is a piece of agricultural equipment that uses bladed attachments rotating around a drum to cut down bushes and grassy terrain. One major drawback to the flail mower is the rapid wear that happens almost immediately when any sort of rocks, gravel, or rough terrain are encountered. The goal of this project was to design and manufacture a prototype of a machine that could level rough terrain through repeating impacts as opposed to cutting with blades. The final design was a chain flail mower, a piece of equipment designed to level rough terrain that uses chains to repeatedly bludgeon rocks, gravel, and debris. The designed chain flail mower was assembled into an existing commercially available snow blower for testing.

Lee, Sangwon. "TWO ESSAYS ON PRODUCT DESIGN AND CONSUMER EVALUATIONS." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3939.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is about the central role of product design on consumer evaluations. While the design literature has articulated two different types of design, i.e. form-based design and function-based design (Khalid 2004), most extant marketing literature has mostly focused on the impact of functional design on performance (see Chitturi, Raghunathan, and Mahajan (2007) for a notable exception). In this paper, I examine the individual and joint effects of the two design dimensions: form design and functional design on consumer evaluations of new products. In the first essay, employing theoretical underpinnings from processing fluency theory, I investigate four major research questions. First, all else equal, does form design matter? Second, how does form design interact with functional design? Third, does the interaction between form and functionality change in an innovation context? Specifically, given a certain level of functionality, what type of form is more advantageous for a radically new product (RNP) or an incrementally new product (INP)? Fourth, is there an individual difference in consumer evaluations to innovative products with various form designs? Results from the four experiments conducted demonstrate that (1) more typical form design leads to more positive attitudes toward the product than less typical form design, (2) a more typical design compensates for the average functionality of the product and hence a product with average functionality is evaluated as well as highly functional products in the more typical design condition. In a less typical design condition, a product with high functionality leads to much lower consumer attitudes towards the product, (3) whereas the form design for incremental innovations must be closer to the incumbent products for favorable evaluations, less typical form is evaluated as good as more typical form for radical innovations. (4) Form design of an innovative product matters more to the technologically more sophisticated consumers (experts) than technologically less sophisticated consumers (novices). In the second essay, I examine the issues involved in using form design to nullify first mover advantage. Pioneers or first movers can be defined as the first firm to sell in a new product category. Despite the proliferation of the pioneering advantage research, there are few empirical studies which examined how the product design enables the later entrants to nullify the first mover advantage. Employing theoretical underpinnings from categorization theory, I investigate the following research questions. First, what type of form is more likely to enhance consumer evaluations and nullify first mover advantage when the follower s product is featured with higher or lower functionality? Second, how does form design interact with functional design for the follower s product? Results from the experimental study conducted demonstrate that (1) if the follower s functionality is not superior to the pioneer s, follower had better focus on design differentiation which can compensate for the lower functionality of the follower (2) if the follower s functionality is superior to the pioneer s, follower had better follow the pioneer s design for the better product evaluation. The managerial implication is clear: Form design is a critical determinant of consumer evaluations. Form design helps create and appropriate value for firms.

Rehnberg, Adam. "Suspension design for off-road construction machines." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Fordonsdynamik, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-33883.

Full text
Abstract:
Construction machines, also referred to as engineering vehicles or earth movers, are used in a variety of tasks related to infrastructure development and material handling. While modern construction machines represent a high level of sophistication in several areas, their suspension systems are generally rudimentary or even nonexistent. This leads to unacceptably high vibration levels for the operator, particularly when considering front loaders and dump trucks, which regularly traverse longer distances at reasonably high velocities. To meet future demands on operator comfort and high speed capacity, more refined wheel suspensions will have to be developed. The aim of this thesis is therefore to investigate which factors need to be considered in the fundamental design of suspension systems for wheeled construction machines. The ride dynamics of wheeled construction machines are affected by a number of particular properties specific to this type of vehicle. The pitch inertia is typically high in relation to the mass and wheelbase, which leads to pronounced pitching. The axle loads differ considerably between the loaded and the unloaded condition, necessitating ride height control, and hence the suspension properties may be altered as the vehicle is loaded. Furthermore, the low vertical stiffness of off-road tyres means that changes in the tyre properties will have a large impact on the dynamics of the suspended mass. The impact of these factors has been investigated using analytical models and parameters for a typical wheel loader. Multibody dynamic simulations have also been used to study the effects of suspended axles on the vehicle ride vibrations in more detail. The simulation model has also been compared to measurements performed on a prototype wheel loader with suspended axles. For reasons of manoeuvrability and robustness, many construction machines use articulated frame steering. The dynamic behaviour of articulated vehicles has therefore been examined here, focusing on lateral instabilities in the form of “snaking” and “folding”. A multibody dynamics model has been used to investigate how suspended axles influence the snaking stability of an articulated wheel loader. A remote-controlled, articulated test vehicle in model-scale has also been developed to enable safe and inexpensive practical experiments. The test vehicle is used to study the influence of several vehicle parameters on snaking stability, including suspension, drive configuration and mass distribution. Comparisons are also made with predictions using a simplified linear model. Off-road tyres represent a further complication of construction machine dynamics, since the tyres’ behaviour is typically highly nonlinear and difficult to evaluate in testing due to the size of the tyres. A rolling test rig for large tyres has here been evaluated, showing that the test rig is capable of producing useful data for validating tyre simulation models of varying complexity. The theoretical and experimental studies presented in this thesis contribute to the deeper understanding of a number of aspects of the dynamic behaviour of construction machines. This work therefore provides a basis for the continued development of wheel suspensions for such vehicles.

This study is dedicated to establish an intelligent lawn mower. Based on a remote control car body and calculate the motion state of the mower body based on the characteristics of Ackermann steering system. The corresponding mower body speed and angular velocity relationship are implemented and maintained by the Robot Operating System (ROS). The Hall sensor is used to test the tire’s rotation speed to perform linear speed sensing. The measured speed from Hall sensor and the actual measured average speed deviation are 0.7 m/s, and sensor fusion is implemented by Kalman Filter, so as to achieve more accurate mower state tracking, since the steering is only using the IMU for sensing, error gradually increase overtime, so it is necessary to additionally locate the position of the mower through environmental information. Through the depth information of the Intel D435 depth camera, as the main sensor of the intelligent mower''s environmental information, with the mower state estimated by Kalman Filter, using the Particle Filter algorithm to locate the mower position, confirm the mower After state tracking and positioning, the overall environment can be mapped with environmental information to achieve Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM). In this study, the path planning is divided into global and local path planning, implement by the combination of the shortest path algorithm (A* search) and DWA (Dynamic window approach). Achieve the basic positional movement effect、remote control and analog monitoring functions. In the field of region filling, tests how to completely fill an irregular shape map through simulation. In addition to the above software implementation, this study also includes how to gradually build a remote control car into a self-driving vehicle with a mowing mechanism, and design a mowing mechanism’s prototype, and test the mowing with a current sensor. The current feedback tracking of the drive motor is used to monitor the mowing situation.

With the development of the electric mower, an electrical control system is necessary to drive the blades and the traction wheel. This thesis introduces an electrical deck control system. The system includes a high-powered deck controller and a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). A PMSM control model has been built in MATLAB/Simulink to verify and support the physical design. Three different PWM modulation methods have also been implemented and compared in MATLAB/Simulink. Furthermore, a model for the distribution and features of grass was built based on sampling of Google Street View images. A six-step pulse width modulation (PWM) control strategy was realized using a PIC33 embedded microprocessor. An enhanced closed-loop control system design was implemented to keep a constant blade speed in order to cut grass efficiently.

At present, automatic sweeping robots are very common in the market, but automatic mowing robots are not so common. The automation of lawn mowers can eliminate many boring manual work and save labor. The focus of this article is to develop a fully automatic mowing robot. The mowing robot can be set to automatically cut off weeds in the designated area, or it can be manually controlled by wifi using a mobile phone, allowing the user to remotely control the mowing robot. We first bought a mower to modify it and completed the manual control. After that, we assembled a small robot car to simulate the automation part for the convenience of testing. The automated part uses the RTK method to get the precise GPS coordinates of the current car and the next target, and then combines the gyro sensor plus the PID to complete the straight line to reduce the overlap ratio during walking.

An optimal path planning scheme for autonomous lawnmowers to achieve minimum working time, minimum energy conservation and mixed operation mode, as well as high efficiency is developed in this thesis. For route planning, rough path planning and a geography method are adopted. A rough path planning is first considered with obstacles ignored. Then, a geography method is applied to enable the details of a real optimal path in accessing the easiest and safest condition. After taking the chosen mode, a distinct path planed on the basis of the obstacles coordinates are obtained. Additionally, a global positioning system (GPS) which provides real-time positioning of the lawnmower is equipped with the path planning system. In addition to the path planning using single mower, an algorithm for multi-task operation as well as the partitioning method for working area is also developed. For this algorithm, we define an index of mowing easiness, with which the accomplishing level in mowing for any prairies can be derived. Based on the figure of mowing easiness, an objective function is proposed for optimization. With the optimization of this objective function, the control law for the optimal multi-task of mowing is developed. The optimal path planning has been tested under a variety of simulations and proven to be effective in enhancing the working efficiency.

This research is focused on the helical blades used in the reel mower machine which uses 5 to 10 helical blades. These blades are normally manufactured using the roll forming process which has certain demerits. This research is done to develop a new process known as Compression process for the manufacture of blades using inverse engineering. To save cost of research, time as well as waste of material the computerized simulation process is being used. The design of the blade as well as the die for the compression and modification are done using software Solidworks. Simulation is performed using software Deform 3D. The simulation result and the actual design are compared using software GEOMAGIC. This study also shows the potential applications of inverse engineering and its benefits in verifying and reinventing the part manufacturing process.

High speed motor is often adopted in the air conditioner and machine tool to achieve energy saving and high speed manufacture. The objective of this research is to develop the drive technology for induction motor (IM) with high speed. Vector control (VC) is essential for a precise speed and torque control of the IM. This research employs an indirect VC that estimates the rotor speed and slip to achieve a speed sensorless control. Precise rotor speed estimation relies on precise machine parameter estimation. This research presents an auto tunning method that uses DC test, lock-rotor test and no load test to estimate the equivalent circuit parameters of the IM. Accordingly, the sensorless speed estimation and indirect VC are designed. A sliding mode back EMF estimation method is adopted to reduce the speed error due to parameter variation caused by the inevitable temperature rise. To make a smooth full range speed control, a dynamic filter is developed to adjust the cut-off frequency of the low-pass filter to obtain a low ripple speed feedback. A fully digital controller is realized using the TI F28335 DSP IC. The firmware is programmed with the auxiliary design of the PSIM SimCoder digital control developing platform. A 2kW IM drive is implemented. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed with some simulation and experimental results.

This thesis establishes a theoretical model to investigate welfare issues related to reverse mergers, which are a type of mergers used by private firms to become publicly traded without resorting to the initial public offering (IPO) process. It proposes that reverse mergers provide a way for private firms to get listed rapidly and gain first-mover advantages in the product markets, but the managers of poor-quality firms may use reverse mergers to get listed and exploit uninformed investors through insider trading. This thesis finds that moving the reverse merger stocks to a stock market with lower market liquidity may be the best choice in terms of social welfare. This arrangement effectively limits the insider trading gains of the poor-quality firms’ managers, thus depresses their incentive to undertake reverse mergers. At the same time, it still allows firms that have good market opportunities but cannot satisfy the IPO standard to get listed through reverse mergers.
