In the first part of the chapter, a description of the components forming a composite member is presented. This is followed by an outline of the main kinematic concepts, such as full and partial shear interaction, that influence the structural response of this form of construction due to the flexibility of the shear connection provided between the concrete and steel components. The review of the work performed on the time-dependent behaviour of concrete and its influence on the long-term structural response of composite beams for building and bridge applications is then presented. The modelling and experimental work considered in the review highlights the importance of considering concrete time effects, when predicting the in-service response of composite beams.</p>

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter is focused on Power Take-Off (PTO) systems for wave energy converters (WEC), being one of the most important elements since PTOs are responsible to transform the mechanical power captured from the waves into electricity. It presents Direct-Drive PTO (DDPTO) as one of the most reliable solutions to be adapted to some particular types of WEC, such as point absorbers. A discussion about modularity and adaptability, together with intrinsic characteristics of direct-drive PTOs, is also included. Among the different technologies of electric machines that can be used in direct-drive linear PTOs, switched reluctance machines (SRM) are described in further detail. In particular, the Azimuthal Multi-translator SRM is presented as a suitable solution in order to increase power density and reduce costs. Not only the electric machine, but also the associated power electronics are described in detail. The description includes the different configurations and topologies of power converters and the most appropriate control strategies. Finally, a superconducting linear generator solution is described, presenting it as a reliable alternative for the application of direct-drive PTOs. An example of concept and preliminary design is included in order to highlight the main challenges to be faced during this process.

Abstract:
AbstractUrban development principles have evolved from sustainability, where the focus was on limiting the negative impact of urban environment, to restorative and regenerative sustainability, where positive impact is needed on global social and ecological systems. This recent paradigm shift requires the development of new tools for practitioners, like design methodologies, new technologies, and assessment methods. To measure the impact of sustainability on the built environment, several building-scale assessment tools exist. The question is how these widespread rating systems support restorative change in the built environment. The main question of the research is answered in three methodological steps. First, the goals of restorative sustainability are summarized from the available extensive literature, including the topics of Place, Energy, Water, Well-being, Carbon, Resources, Equity, Education, and Economics. Then different rating tools (Living Building Challenge, WELL, LEED, BREEAM, DGNB) are analysed how the considered issues and indicators in these rating tools are connected to restorative goals. Then these indicators are assessed how they serve that goal. The result of this study shows the main strengths and gaps in current wide-spread international rating tools regarding their support of restorative sustainability.

Abstract This paper presents an application data model for the representation of conceptual structures of mechanisms. The main features in building this model are (1) to use semantic database modelling approaches and (2) to have a generic model. The model has been used in developing a software environment system for integrated design and manufacturing of mechanisms. Both conceptual design and implementation issues concerning this model are discussed. The system intelligence can be increased via a proper application data model. In particular, the concepts handling raw data and handling differen

Abstract Lab on Chips (LOCs) are devices, mostly based on microfluidics, that allow to perform one or several chemical, biochemical or biological analysis in a miniaturized format on a single chip. The Additive Manufacturing processes, and in particular the Digital Light Processing stereolithography (DLP-SLA), could quickly produce a complete LOC with high resolution 3D features in a single step, i.e. without the need for assembly processes, and using low cost and user-friendly desktop machines. However, the potential of DLP-SLA to produce non-planar channels or channels with complex sections

The main tasks of improving the crushed stone-mastic coatings of forest timber highways through the use of innovative road-building materials are considered. Such roads are characterized by the use of materials capable of meeting the basic requirements for transport and operational conditions in difficult natural and climatic conditions. The known road building materials are distinguished by the instability of their physical and mechanical properties. This causes significant difficulties both in the design and in the operation of forest timber roads made of these materials. Despite the complex

Nonlinear Energy Sinks (NES) are used to passively reduce the amplitude of vibrations. This reduction is made possible by introducing a nonlinearly stiffening behavior in the NES, which might lead to an irreversible transfer of energy between the main system (e.g., a building) and the NES. However, this irreversible transfer, and therefore the efficiency of the NES, is strongly dependent on the design parameters of the NES. In fact, the efficiency of the NES might be so sensitive to changes in design parameters and other factors (e.g., initial conditions) that it is discontinuous, switching fr
