Abstract:
The Danish expedition in the summers of 1895 and 1896 on board the cruiser Ingolf to Icelandic and West Greenland waters mainly had zoological tasks, the results of which are treated in the present issue by Wolff. However, the expedition also obtained significant results in physical oceanography. The existence of a vast subsurface ridge, the Reykjanes Ridge, was proved. On the basis of the hydrographic stations worked, the expedition's physicist and chemist Martin Knudsen was able to describe the hydrographic situation of the area. He proved the division of the Irminger Current into an easterly and westerly branch northwest of Iceland, and the extent and magnitude of the East Icelandic Polar Current were established. The existence of an overflow over the Iceland-Faroe Ridge of cold, low-salinity bottom water from the Norwegian Sea into the Atlantic was demonstrated. Knudsen designed a new, reliable reversing thermometer for use on the expedition, and he constructed an instrument that made it possible to measure aboard the ship the content of oxygen and nitrogen dissolved in the water. He showed that the supersaturation of surface water with oxygen might be explained from the photosynthetic processes of phytoplankton.

AbstractIn May 1999 Iceland, Norway and Russia signed an agreement (the "Loophole Agreement") designed to resolve a six-year dispute over unregulated fishing by Icelandic vessels for straddling stocks in an enclave ("the Loophole") of high seas in the central Barents Sea. The Agreement, which gives Iceland fishing rights in the Norwegian and Russian EEZs in return for ceasing fishing in the Loophole, is an example of direct co-operation between coastal and high seas fishing states over the management of straddling fish stocks on the high seas which the 1995 UN Agreement on the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks envisages as a possible alternative to management through a regional fisheries organisation. The article explains why the parties have chosen this model rather than utilising the existing regional fisheries organisation or establishing a new regional fisheries arrangement; and compares the Loophole Agreement with arrangements for some other high seas enclaves.

Abstract:
In 1935–36, the English writer and design critic Philip Morton Shand (1888-1960), proponent of Modernism, translator of Walter Gropius and founder of MARS group (Modern Architectural Research Group) published two articles in the magazine “The Concrete Way”. The first one was entitled “Concrete´s furthest north”, highlighting the advanced and wide–ranging use of concrete construction in Iceland. With the second article were photographs of newly built public buildings by architect Sigurdur Gudmundsson (1885-1958) as well as bridges designed in the 1920s and 1930s by the engineers of the Icelandic State Highways Department. Shand was impressed by the work of the “gifted and thoroughly modern minded architect such as any country might be proud of” as well as the work of “first rate–engineers” of this “geographically remote island which at that time had only 100,000 inhabitants and 2,000 motorcars. He also points at the photos "as evidence of the wonderful clearness of the air which is characteristic of Iceland´s brief Arctic summers."

Abstract:
Existing urban drainage structures that collect stormwater in underground piping networks face increased pressure with urban densification and increased rainfall intensity with global warming. Urban flooding may become more frequent in the future posing economic, environmental and health risks. Sustainable Drainage Solutions (SuDS) are increasingly being considered as a natural and economical approach to surface water management. Ponds, vegetated swales, rain gardens and green roofs slow down the surface water flow and break down pollutants stemming from traffic, asphalt wear and roof materials. SuDS has been designed for one neighbourhood in Iceland, Urriðaholt. The Icelandic Planning Act and National Planning Strategy have set the base for the implementation of SuDS. Iceland, however, lacks a comprehensive strategy to obtain the benefits of SuDS. This article presents the key success factors for implementing SuDS in Iceland, based on a review of Sweden's and England ́s decadal experience, and current legal, planning, knowledge and data environment in Iceland. Firstly, it is important to clarify the strategic goals of urban runoff management in governmental policy documents. Secondly, the implementation of SuDS needs to be intertwined with the planning process both in municipal and detailed planning phases. A collaborative effort must be undertaken between sewer specialists, planners and other professionals to develop novel surface water collection approaches with respect to local conditions. Collaboration, roles and responsibilities must be clear and identified throughout the SuDS life cycle, from strategy, planning and design, to construction, operation and maintenance. More interdisciplinary research needs to be conducted with regards to SuDS, and communicated to local stakeholders to improve their general knowledge on SuDS.

Abstract:
Aims: This research was designed to explore the extent to which the use of alcohol or drugs by one member of a family affects the psychosocial state of other family members. The study asks whether family members of substance abusers are more likely to report increased depression, anxiety and stress then the general population in Iceland? Are there significant differences between family members; e.g., spouses, parents, adult children and siblings by gender, age, education and income? Data and methods: The instrument used for this purpose is the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS), which is designed to measure those three related mental states. It was administered to 143 participants (111 women and 32 men) with ages ranging from 19–70 years on the first day of a four-week group therapy programme for relatives of substance use disorder (SUD) at The Icelandic National Centre for Addiction Treatment (SÁÁ) from August 2015 to April 2016. Thirty participants are adult children of a parent with SUD, 47 are a spouse, 56 are parents of a child with SUD and 10 are siblings. The subscales of the DASS for depression, anxiety, and stress were utilised to examine which family member – parent, child, partner, or sibling – presented the behaviour associated with SUD. Results: 36% or more of the respondents in all three subscales had average, serious, or very serious depression, anxiety, and/or stress. This is higher than in DASS studies of the general population in Iceland. However, the analysis indicates that it made little difference to the family’s wellbeing which family member was affected by SUD.

Abstract Compliment responses are speech acts assumed to mirror cultural appropriateness. In this sense, a review of responses to compliments offers cues about the ways in which speakers react to dialogic strategies of politeness. In order to examine how Icelanders react to compliments, an Elicitation Experiment (EE) was designed to evoke natural responses. It consisted in asking a group of 81 Icelandic informants (46 female, 35 male) to read tongue-twisters in Dutch and Spanish during a set of interviews. Informants were complimented based on their performance and their responses were recorded. Based on 162 exchange tokens, it is possible to conclude that not agreeing to compliments is the most common way of reacting to compliments in Iceland.

This is the second in a two-part series of articles about the Icelandic Model for Primary Prevention of Substance Use (IPM) in this volume of Health Promotion Practice. IPM is a community collaborative approach that has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in reducing substance use initiation among youth in Iceland over the past 20 years. While the first article focused attention on the background context, theoretical orientation, evaluation and evidence of effectiveness, and the five guiding principles of the model, this second article describes the 10 core steps to practical implementation. Steps 1 to 3 focus on building and maintaining community capacity for model implementation. Steps 4 to 6 focus on implementing a rigorous system of data collection, processing, dissemination, and translation of findings. Steps 7 to 9 are designed to focus community attention and to maximize community engagement in creating and sustaining a social environment in which young people become progressively less likely to engage in substance use, including demonstrative examples from Iceland. And Step 10 focuses on the iterative, repetitive, and long-term nature of the IPM and describes a predictable arc of implementation-related opportunities and challenges. The article is concluded with a brief discussion about potential variation in community factors for implementation.

Abstract:
Over the past few decades, digital tools have become indispensable in the field of architecture. The complex design tasks that make up architectural design methods benefit from utilizing advanced simulation software and, consequently, design solutions have become more nature-adapted and site-specific. Computer simulations and performance-oriented design enable us to address global challenges, such as climate change, in the preliminary conceptual design phase. In this paper, an innovative architectural design method is introduced. This method consists of the following: (1) an analysis of the local microclimate, specifically the wind situation; (2) the parametric shape generation of the airport terminal incorporating wind as a form-finding factor; (3) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis; and (4) wind-performance studies of various shapes and designs. A combination of programs, such as Rhinoceros (Rhino), and open-source plug-ins, such as Grasshopper and Swift, along with the post-processing software Paraview, are utilized for the wind-performance evaluation of a case study airport terminal in Reykjavik, Iceland. The objective of this wind-performance evaluation is to enhance the local wind situation and, by employing the proposed architectural shape, to regulate the wind pattern to find the optimal wind flow around the designed building. By utilizing the aforementioned software, or other open-source software, the proposed method can be easily integrated into regular architectural practice.

AbstractSnow avalanches threaten a large part of the residential area of Bolungarvik, a town of 1100 inhabitants located in the Vestfirðir peninsula, northwest Iceland. Methods for the complete protection of all the houses were requested by the Ministry of Environment. As conventional deflecting and catching dams were not feasible due to avalanche velocities of > 40 m s–1 in the actual defence area, a huge open pit built into the lower mountainside was proposed. The pit is designed to dissipate the energy of avalanches of any expected size. It is 1000 m long, and the upper and lower pit walls are 30–40 and 15–20 m high, respectively. The downhill side of the pit is increased to 30 m by a nearly vertical, 10–15 m high dam. The bottom is 25–40 m wide, and the effective cross-sections are 700–2300 m2. The total storage capacity is approximately 106 m3. Cost-benefit analyses indicate that the development cost of the pit protection is favourable compared to the value of the houses as well as alternative safety solutions.

Abstract:
Sustainability is a pressing topic in all universities. Institutions are determining what the implications of such a development are, e.g., on how courses that students are provided with should develop, what to change, what to add, and how these changes could be brought about. The purpose of this research was to provide an overview of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the curriculum of five schools at the University of Iceland and an overview of individual SDGs for the university, to identify the main challenges and opportunities for improvement. Data collection included analysis of every single university’s course description and learning outcomes using a curriculum analysis key designed for the SDGs. Results indicated strong signs of SDG 4 (quality education) at the School of Education and the School of Social Sciences and SDG 3 (good health and well-being) at the School of Health Sciences. For the university, the results revealed a very limited emphasis on four SDGs, i.e., SDG 1 (no poverty), SDG 2 (zero hunger), SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), and SDG 13 (climate actions). The results can serve as a benchmark for other universities, e.g., for comparison of results and their situation when creating policy and practices that include implementing the SDGs. Additionally, they can be used for comparison within the University of Iceland as a whole or within each school to monitor change.

Abstract:
This doctoral project develops an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to furniture designer\maker practice. At its core is a practice-based framework that can be used to assess and reflect upon the tacit, primarily visual nature of makers’ knowledge and the way that this can be communicated in order to develop design outcomes. The enquiry takes as its focus a two-year collaboration between the author – a British-based furniture designer/maker – and six indigenous Icelandic craft practitioners in which the ultimate goal was the creation of artefacts that, it was hoped, would be expressive of Iceland’s native craft traditions. During the ‘Iceland Project,’ as it came to be known, interaction between and among participants was grounded in a predetermined plan developed democratically through consultation and dialogue. The project successfully develops new knowledge through a contemporary reinterpretation of indigenous Icelandic craft-making knowledge and demonstrates this through the making of artefacts imbued with recognized cultural status. It also extends furniture designer/maker research by developing an innovative practice-based method of collaboration rooted in the multimedia archiving of the making process which can then be used to illuminate and facilitate future practice. The project is a scholarly display of makers’ knowledge: the process is shared democratically among peers; the decisions that articulate design and methods of making are reviewed; and inter-subjective outcomes are generated. To facilitate learning from designer/maker practice-based research, the creative narrative is necessarily partly articulated through visual media and artifacts.

Abstract:
Schoolyards play an important role in the Icelandic education system. Students aged 6 to 12 years old are required to go outdoors for recess at least two times per day. To play, get fresh air and to regain energy for upcoming classes. The schoolyards are even sometimes used for outdoor education where the students can experience their nearest environment. The children spend a great time of their childhood in school, which should support their well-being by offering an environment of good quality.The thesis main objective is to examine the importance of outdoor lighting in Icelandic schoolyards by the dark winter days. Since Iceland is located at high latitudes, the amount of daylight varies between seasons, with shorter days by winter but longer and brighter days by the summer.The structure of the thesis is a combination of research background and a case study. The research background introduces the positive link between the outdoors and well-being and how the mindset towards the winter can change the perception of darkness. Possibilities of outdoor lighting are examined, how lighting can contribute to the users and the identity of urban spaces. The case study examines two Icelandic schools where the current conditions are analyzed. Qualitative interviews were carried out to gain insight from school employees about the school environment and their experience of the students‘ well-being during the dark winter months. Finally, a lighting proposal is introduced that illustrates how layers of light can enrich the school outdoor environment.It can be truly said that outdoor lighting is of high importance in Icelandic schoolyards, for the students to see and experience the schoolyard by dark winter days. It is important that the lighting is in context with the schoolyard elements and thereby enhancing the quality of the environment.

The automotive industry is blooming with new interpretations of what future cars will be in the future. Progressive technologies, environmental awareness and people’s behavioral change o er new opportunities for creating more sustainable vehicles. While these are primarily being developed to solve problems in urban environments, similar developments should be aimed to preserve our natural surroundings. During this project I traveled to Iceland to explore the country and learn how we can improve the experience of travel. I used my research, observations and the Land Rover heritage to look for opportunities in an autonomous o -road scenario. Furthermore I wanted to explore of how renewable energy sources can be used to benefit vehicle development and usage. Project outcome is Land Rover Melrakki, a vehicle developed to explore Iceland while sustaining main traveller needs in a downscaled solution.

Current trends in education and school architecture reflect a growing awareness of the interconnectedness of people and spaces. Spaces acquire meaning through the experiences of those who use them and can contribute to the development of a sense of place. Purpose-built schools have long been valued and built in Iceland. The broad purpose of this study was to explore Icelandic students’ perceptions of their purpose-built school. Specific research questions included: (a) What spaces in purpose-built schools are important to students? (b) What happens in these spaces? (c) What meaning, if any, do these identified spaces hold for students? and (d) In ascribing meaning to some of the identified spaces, do students develop a sense of place? This phenomenological research initiative used an emergent design methodology. Seven Grade 9 and three Grade 10 students were recruited for this study. Primary data sources included students’ photographs of important school spaces, individual photo-elicitation interviews, and walking tours. Participants identified 25 important school spaces and 7 issues of concern within these spaces. Further analysis examined participants’ complex construction of importance and meaning. Participants described that school spaces were more likely to become meaningful places, when the design of the educational facility was in harmony with students’ experiences. The results of this study should raise awareness of the importance of building such schools in Canada and encourage the inclusion of students’ unique perspectives in the design of future schools.

This chapter examines conflicts between Brussels 2012, Lugano 2007, and the Hague Convention. Situations may arise wherein two or all three of the instruments may be applicable according to their terms in a given case. The main question is which one prevails. The chapter first considers the instrument that courts of an EU State should apply in the event that both Brussels 2012 and Lugano 2007 apply according to their terms. It then looks at conflicts between Brussels 2012 and Hague. Since Hague has only limited scope — it only applies to choice-of-court agreements and then only if the designated court is in a State Party to Hague — conflicts with other instruments will be not be common. Conflicts between Lugano 2007 and Hague will arise only if Hague is ratified by one of more of the Lugano States — Iceland, Norway, or Switzerland. If such conflicts do occur, they will be resolved according to the rules set out in Hague, Article 26, paragraphs 1 to 5.

Abstract Veterinary examination of Icelandic competition horses, according to a specially designed protocol 'fit for competition', is performed prior to every entrance to the track during Landsmót, the National Championships of the Icelandic horse. This has provided valuable data for welfare assessment that have been used for improvement of general rules for the benefit of competition horses. It further prevents suffering on an individual level as horses expressing pain during the examination are found not to be fit for competition and are not allowed to start or continue competition during the event. The frequency of bit-related lesions can be regarded as a welfare indicator for Icelandic competition horses, reflecting the pressure placed on the mouth of the horse.

Abstract Multispecies events, like Landsmót, the National Championships of the Icelandic horse, pose interesting practical and logistical challenges for event managers who must ensure that safety and nonhuman animal welfare are prioritized alongside other aspects of event design and management. This chapter uses Goffman's (1959) dramaturgical concepts of 'front stage', 'backstage' and 'offstage' to consider the types of interspecies encounters that can occur in different contexts around an event site. Drawing on data from ethnographic observations and interviews with horse breeders and event staff, the chapter discusses some of the issues that can arise in trying to manage those interactions in ways that recognize the different needs of human and nonhuman participants, whilst still delivering a successful and entertaining event.

This chapter examines the ‘elsewheres’ that opened up Scandinavian film cultures globally in the 1950s, reflecting international developments in genre, style, and production mode and the increased post-war mobility of people and technologies. This includes access to new shooting locations, lighter cameras and better on-site sound uptake, a motivation to film increasingly in color and in spectacular ‘[Cinema]Scopes’ that could immerse cinema goers in (exotic) scenery. These films were all major investments, designed for global circulation. Constituting an overlooked corpus of Scandinavian ‘elsewheres’ in their portrayal of international or seemingly exotic locations, as well as indigenous populations and practices, these films also tie into period perceptions of Scandinavian politics abroad -- internationalist, pacifist, socialist, and “do-gooder,” spreading around the world the merits of the Scandinavian, especially Swedish, model of the cradle-to-grave welfare state and a Dag Hammarskjöld-inspired notion of a Third/Middle Way of international aid and solidarity. The films can also be seen as reacting specifically against the Cold War opposition between East and West, and illuminating the precarious status of small nation states wedged in between them, whether NATO members (Norway, Denmark, Iceland) or not (Sweden, Finland).

We describe how the open-source Learning and Reading Assistant (LARA) platform was used to convert a classic Old Norse text, the Völuspá, into an interactive online form. The LARA version includes high-quality recorded audio, translations, notes on key words and phrases, an automatically generated concordance, and links to other online resources. The interactive text was created in two different editions, one with Modern Icelandic translations designed to support Icelandic school students who read the poem as a set text, and one with English translations designed for English readers with basic Old Norse who wish to able to appreciate the poem in the original as a piece of literature. Initial feedback from groups has been positive.

Learning and Reading Assistant (LARA) is an open source platform that enables conversion of plain texts into an interactive multimedia form designed to support second- and foreign-language (L2) learners. In this workshop, we illustrate the open source aspects using collaborative work carried out during a six-week summer project at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. Three undergraduate level students extended the platform in different directions in cooperation with other members of the international LARA team. The three subprojects were respectively concerned with adding automatically generated flashcards, adding multimedia versions of poetic texts in the archaic language Old Norse, and extending LARA to allow the inclusion of sign language content in Icelandic sign language – Íslenskt TáknMál (ÍTM). All three reached successful conclusions.

Abstract:
This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a thermoelectric-based point of use power generation system with no moving parts. The power system was designed to be robust and stable, capable of being clamped onto the outer wall of a hot steam pipe with a temperature of over 160°C using only heat pipes and natural convection of ambient air for cooling. Several systems were built and tested. One system was built and tested at the Cooper Union in New York City. The power generation was evaluated for different ambient and steam pipe temperatures. The other systems were attached to an 85°C geothermal hot water pipe and a 100–120°C geothermal steam pipe in Iceland. The Cooper Union system was used to power two microcontroller based security cameras, one with wireless LAN and another with cellular connectivity. Additional testing of the PV voltage controller and the generator were conducted in Iceland. The results show that the system can be used to power surveillance systems, even in remote locations without access to the electrical grid. Because the system does not require grid access, it will run constantly, and hence improve security. Furthermore, the unit’s power generation is greater in colder environments that substantially degrade battery performance.

The authors have developed test beds heated green roofs in New York City and geothermal heated gardens in Iceland using waste heat. A thermoelectric generator developed by the authors for these gardens currently provides more than 6 watts of steady state power. This sustainable power source is independent from the grid and is used for web cameras. The test beds need a mobile, web-accessible robot platform for additional monitoring that is battery-charged by the thermoelectric generator. This robot’s power consumption must match the constraints of the thermoelectric generator’s output. This paper presents the design and construction of a low-power walking quadruped robotic platform with a specifically designed walking algorithm. The robot will eventually provide the needed web accessible remote monitoring and maintenance capabilities for the test beds. Remote supervision and control of multiple heated green roofs and heated gardens will be possible from a central location.

This paper describes a novel approach for optimizing a district heating distribution network under various flow rate conditions. For district heating systems, the demand or the flow and pressure at each node varies over the time of year. The flow control that affects the operational cost can be based on the variable speed and the on/off control on serial pumping or pressure controlled valves. In the pipe system design, the topology, or the pipe layout, and the pipe diameter is optimized using genetic algorithms. Standardized methods are used for calculating the pipe thickness, supports, anchors and the thermal expansion loops. The interconnection between the pipe system and the pump station design is discussed. The objective is to minimize the total or life cycle cost (capital maintenance and operational cost), subject to ensuring demands or constraints at all points. The results are compared to classical methods where the pump station and the pipe system are designed separately and the improvements are discussed. The problem is formulated by developing an objective function where the optimization parameters define the pump arrangement, pipe system topology, and pipe diameters. The pump station and pipe system optimization consist of selecting components from a pre-defined set of elements and is implemented with discrete decision variables. Optimization of pipe elements consists of optimizing the diameter, after the topology has been defined, and is implemented with discrete variables. Flow distribution and pressure analysis is performed. Thicknesses, pressure classes, supports, expansion loops and anchors are not part of the optimization parameters, but are determined during the evaluation of the objective function. Each time the objective function is evaluated, the pipe system is designed in a sub-optimization according to given loads. The pressure head constraints are used to design the pumping curves. The method is tested on a district heating system in Reykjavik, Iceland.

<p>For improved safety and ease of travel for pedestrians and cyclists across the busy 4-lane main road Breidholtsbraut in the suburb of Breidholt in Reykjavik, Iceland, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration and Reykjavik City Council engaged EFLA Consulting Engineers and Studio Granda Architects for the design of a footbridge over the road. The bridge is an 86-m long, post-tensioned concrete girder in four spans and follows a curved alignment that plays on the landscaped surroundings. The attractive shape of the underside of the concrete girder is formed by a series of arcs; the cross-section having been used before by the design team to good effect. Aiming for minimized inspection and maintenance costs, the end abutments of the bridge are supported through a concealed concrete hinge, eliminating the need for bearings and construction joints. The stainless-steel wire mesh handrail was embedded into the concrete deck post casting, using a carefully planned core drilling procedure. The bridge does not have a support in the road central reserve, and this has allowed the bridge construction to proceed with only a few, short closures of the busy underlying road. The result is a well-received addition to the collection of Reykjavik footbridges.</p>

Seismic loading is a critical factor in the structural design of piping systems for geothermal power plants in Iceland. It has been shown that the design of piping systems which is based on response spectrum static analysis can lead to overdesigned systems. The loading on the supports will be overestimated and, hence, the supports tend to be too stiff. This increased stiffness both increases the cost and reduces the quality of the seismic design. The systems response is highly dependent on the support stiffness. In this work, the design of a typical expansion loop with respect to seismic loading is discussed, with the goal being to minimize the loading from the ground acceleration. A typical pipe support is modelled, and its stiffness characteristics are evaluated and optimized. Finally, recommendations are made for improvements in pipeline support design.

In this paper the Variable Topography Distance Transform method (VTDT) is used to find optimal paths across physical landscapes for pipelines carrying a two-phase geothermal fluid. The method incorporates constraints such as obstacles, land costs, building costs, variable gradients, height, and environmental issues in the route selection process. The method is an expanded form of Distance Transform algorithms that are used in image processing. It offers a way to look at land surfaces as a slope-adjusted 2-D model rather than as a more complex and computationally intensive 3-D model. The VTDT method works with a digital representation, called a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), of the landscape in question. The method is then tested on the route design for pipelines carrying a two-phase geothermal fluid at the Hellisheidi Power Plant in Iceland, which is currently (early 2005) in the design and construction phase.

Human population is ever-increasing and thus, demand for energy is escalating. Consequently, seeking clean methods of producing electricity is a most crucial endeavor at this time. The shrinking reserves of oil have added urgency to the matter. One other recognized source of renewable energy besides wind, water and solar (WWS) is geothermal energy, which has been proven to be useful in baseload power generation, a significant advantage over WWS. As compared to fossil fuels, geothermal energy is not subjected to the supply and cost fluctuations of which fuels are at risk. To date, there have been a number of innovative procedures explored to use geothermal energy to produce electricity. A relatively innovative yet not uncommon method has been to use hot solid rocks to heat water and pump the superheated water to use in power plants. These rocks are generally underground and at higher temperatures due to their proximity to volcanoes or natural geothermal vents. The water goes deeper down into the earth’s crust to become superheated by the rocks, and then is pumped out to power turbines, and subsequently returned into the ground to repeat the process. In Krafla, Iceland, during their Icelandic Deep Drilling Project (IDDP) in 2009, a borehole was accidentally dug into the magma at 2100 meters. The temperature of this magma was about 900–1000°C. A steel casing with perforations on the flat side was cemented into the well bottom. This design was to slow the heat flow, and superheated steam was made for the following two years till July 2012. The steam reached temperatures of 450°C and was at high pressures. Krafla was the world’s first magma-enhanced geothermal system to generate electricity. This paper will explore the feasibility of using geothermal power plant methods as a sustainable source of clean energy. Geothermal energy has tremendous potential if the right methods can be found to tap that potential, as well as if the cost may be brought down by innovation and demand. In addition, an innovative method which already exists in some form, is proposed in the current review, to harness more geothermal energy for use.

Municipal District Heating Services and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems can produce waste heat in the form of steam condensate and hot water. The authors have demonstrated (IMECE2014-39066) the potential of open field heating of green roofs to reduce thermal pollution, save potable water, and while increasing plant growth. Subsequent research in both Iceland and New York City using similar systems has resulted in the growth of out of region plants. The latest plant growth results are detailed. The latest research has indicated additional potential impediments, including the need for an additional CHP system pump. A thorough structural analysis on existing older roofs is necessary to avoid an overstressed roof. Substantial UV shielding of the plastic piping and upgrading of the pipes from braided PVC to PEX(a) was also needed. The details of selecting an appropriate heat exchanger were analyzed for a specific building and associated construction details are provided.
