Full textThis report describes the development of a cinema and gaming couch with the objective of giving the couch a Scandinavian look, and that the couch can be adapted to the user. The work has been performed in cooperation with EM Home and describes the workflow from the preliminary study to a final concept launched as Vegas. The preliminary study investigated the current market and interviews with customers provided insight in the current trends and an idea of which requirements and preferences the user has on a couch. An interview was also made with people that works with studying how humans interact with games. These studies gave an greater understanding of how we humans adapt to the digital world. This information formed the basis for a specification which was compiled in collaboration with EM Home. Once the specifications were consolidated, the concept generation phase started, in which ideas about design and features took form. The ideas then evolved to the base for three final concepts. The concepts were discussed with EM Home, with the target group and compared in tables of specifications so that positive and negative factors of the different concepts emerged. The elements of the concepts that best met the requirements of specifications and based on feedback from the target group were combined together for further development into a final concept. Further development was to study factors such as material selection, ergonomics and functionality closer.Further development of Vegas has resulted in a modular sofa with a Scandinavian design. Vegas have been made in two standard designs that can be combined and extended with options by the customer. To provide realistic images of Vegas, the couch was modeled in 3D CAD software Pro/ENGINEER™ and rendered in Bunkspeed™. Which resulted in pictures of Vegas in a real environment.

Full textDuring spring 2014, Ida Evervall and Toni Maric from the University of Skövde have carried out a project with a door making company. Daylight admission into to hallways in apartments is basically non-existent today and lamps are used to satisfy the need of light. A door accessory has been developed in order to collect light from the outside of the apartment and transport it through the door to the inside, with no transparency. The client wanted that the transport of light would mainly be done with fiber optics. Experiments showed that fiber optics were sufficient to transport the light, a collecting lens in front gave significantly better result in sunny days. Cloudy days, it was considered enough to mark the position of the door. A market research confirmed that dark hallways was a fact and that transparency-protected door accessories was highlighted together with requirements for price and other safety requirements such as fire, sound, burglary etc. Several solutions to the sub-functions of the door accessory were generated, combined and developed. Evaluations were carried out in the form of tests and in discussion with the client. Then one concept was elected and named BeeLight. BeeLight consists of a pentagon-shaped lens surrounded by five hexagonal lenses that focus the light into the fiber optic bundle. The collecting lens is a solution that collects light from different directions as the sun moves throughout the day. A simple test showed that BeeLight provides about 10 lumen on a sunny day. More tests should be conducted in order to obtain exact numbers on how much light BeeLight can transport into the hallway.

Full textThis report was written as a result of a Bachelor Degree Project at the School of Technology and Society at University of Skövde, first semester 2007. The assigner was Tibrokök in Tibro, Sweden. The commission was originally to design a sliding door concept for kitchen. Later it was expanded to also include bathrooms.
During the feasibility study of the project Internet was used as an information source. Kitchen brochures and magazines were ordered from different companies to give inspiration and ideas. A wide range of products from both Tibrokök and their competitors were examined through phone calls, visits and interviews. Because the final products would have to be manufactured by Tibrokök it was also important to know about the company’s resources. The factory was therefore also visited during the feasibility study.
A design specification was written together with Tibrokök. This was to work as a control document during the project. To simplify the making of the design specification, a design brief and an objectives tree were first made. The design brief summarizes the commission and goals. The objectives tree helps to clarify all the requirements.
With the design specification as a foundation, the period of idea generating was started. During that period a number of creative methods were used to enhance creativity. Methods used were: 6-3-5, brainstorming and collective notebook. Some simple mock-ups were also made to help with three-dimensional thinking.
The next step, after the period of idea generation, was to develop the ideas further into concepts. Firstly a selection of ideas had to be made. The remaining ideas were then developed into concepts. The best concepts were then, during meetings with Tibrokök, selected for further development. This procedure was repeated several times. All changes made were recorded into the design specification.
The final result was four products: two bathroom cabinets, one room divider and one show case. Prototypes were made of the bathroom cabinets and room divider. All products were also displayed with rendered computerized images.
At the conclusion of this report a discussion is given, where the design group members give their opinion of the project, the cooperation with Tibrokök, the final products and what will happen after the project.

Full textHellbergs International wanted a better design for their recessed handles. Today’s recessed handles are not satisfactory in a user perspective and are expensive to produce because of an ineffective manufacturing process. A design process from a preliminary study to a finished CAD model and drawings are presented in this report. Particular emphasis was put on the recessed handle to make it more ergonomic and allow that it could be used by a as large group of users as possible. Much of the development work was done so that a first-time user can easily understand how it is used. The result was a recessed handle that clearly shows the user how it is used; the bowl follows the opening movement of the handle. The bowl’s beveled sides allow the handle to be gripped by the arm and wrist in the neutral position. A spring loaded hinge in the handle makes for a flexible movement and therefore allowing user with big hands and/or gloves access.

This report describes the development of a design proposal on a CD player in the so-called high-end class. The assignment came from the relatively small trading company Transient Design in Alingsås. Focus of the project was at the interface between the user and the product, and design of the chassis and the CD feeding device. It begins with a study that offers a short introduction to hifi, the identification of the target audience and its needs and requirements of a CD player. Further, the report contains a study of techniques for designing visual interfaces and also a look at the methods of data collection and creativity stimulating techniques. The report continues with a chapter on concept generation, which is the largest part of the report. The concept generation was divided into three major parts, CD player chassis, CD feeding device and user interface. After concept generation follows choice of concept and presentation of the final outcome. Because of the difficulty in deciding on a methodological basis the value of a purely aesthetic quality, a decision was made to make two similar but yet visually different concepts. Finally the report is finished with a discussion of how the project was carried through and what the result was.

Full textThis report covers the conceptual design of a new one person hybrid vehicle that is to be fast and convenient to drive on the roads. The vehicle is most of all supposed to be used as a commute vehicle but can also be used at other occasions as well.
During the work with this project the group has focused on three larger areas, the outer design (body), wheel chassis and an ergonomically designed interior. The group was not able to just create these parts in 3D to get a trustworthy vehicle, hence number of other components and details were also created to get a better entirety.
The outer design starts with idea generation and sketches and ends with a 3D model which is rendered to show how the final product is going to look. The design of the body has been going on during the entire work process due to new ideas and improvements that seemed interesting and had to be changed.
The wheel chassis also started with idea generation, research and sketches. It ended up with a simulated 3D model which later on was mounted on the vehicle body to show how the vehicle is going to perform during usage. The simulation was used to see if the ideas that came up were going to work in reality. The simulation in Pro/Engineer made it possible to save a lot of time and make the work process more efficient.
Finally the interior were designed inside the vehicle body but most importantly it was built and adjusted to the human body. Important measurements and facts were collected with the help of the ergonomic program Jack. Which controls that should be included was investigated and the steering wheel became the central part of the dashboard since the vital functions are controlled via this unit. The speedometer and likewise functions where also moved to the steering wheel to improve the visibility.
The group was also set to explore other interesting details especially the engines. The engines that were chosen to the final concept where so called wheel engines. These engines are mounted inside the rims and can also handle the braking of the vehicle which makes a separate braking system unnecessary. The wheel engines had so many advantages that they became the obvious selection. But the vehicle was from the beginning set to be a hybrid and with only the wheel engines it was not. To make it hybrid, a second, smaller engine was put in, but only for recharging the batteries when needed. This engine is driven by gasoline or ethanol.

This report covers the work procedure for the product development of an undercarriage to a wheelchair, featuring new design- and constructional solutions. The final concept is an undercarriage with two main constructional solutions; a hydraulic cylinder supporting vertical height adjustments and a function which enables the occupant to be tilted forwards or backwards whilst maintaining posture stability. All functions for the undercarriage have been adapted to offer a simpler and cleaner framework.

Full textThis report was written as a result of a Bachelor Degree Project at the School of Technology and Society at University of Skövde spring 2007, together with Jede AB in Mariestad. The report covers the development of a door to a coffee vending machine that is under construction, and will in a chronological order describe the project from ideas to final product.
The project started with a rather extensive feasibility study that thru market research and user tests sorted out the opinions of potential customers, concerning today’s available assortment. Technical areas concerning materials and manufacturing methods were also scrutinized for the consideration of the possibilities of a future production.
The next step was to constructively generate ideas and thoughts that later on could grow to be potential solutions. After several weeks of hard work and pieces of good advice and recommendations from the assigner, four comprehensive concepts were built up. After a deliberation, the project group at Jede determined to proceed with one of the concepts.
This concept was modeled in the CAD program Pro Engineer, and was later on used to produce a full-scale model of the door. After having evaluated the prototype and making the door compatible with the components that were to be used, a satisfying result approached.
When the project was brought to its end, all material was handed over to the assigner, including a computer model that will be used to manufacture moulding forms. If everything goes as planned, the coffee vending machine will be available on the market during the beginning of 2008.
To sum up the project a discussion concerning the assignment and all its matters will be brought up in the end of this report.

Full textThis is a dissertation for a Bachelor Degree Project at the University of Skövde. The project is carried out in cooperation with the company Kinnarps AB.
The objective of this project was to develop a new chair for café and lunch rooms, which should satisfy the markets expectations and demands and match Kinnarps AB’s assortment today. The project has contained everything from identification of user and customer needs and requirements to evaluation and building of a prototype.
The result is a chair with a frame of tubular steel and there is nothing like it in Kinnarps AB’s assortment today. The chair has a frame of tubular steel and separate seat and backrest, just like the chairs Jig and Tango as it is intended to replace. The chair’s extraordinary characteristics are that the shape of the backrest enables a good grip and the motion which encourages variation in sitting postures. The motion is new for this kind of chair both in Kinnarps AB’s assortment as well as on the market.
The product development process is an iterative process which can be described with the activities: identification of customer requirements, product design specification, initiation of concept solutions, evaluation, embodiment design and detail design. Knowledge about the customer requirements and needs is fundamental to a successful product. The result of the market research showed that the new chair should be a comfortable and inviting chair which is lightweight and simple with a timeless design and organic shape. It also came to our knowledge that it is very important that the chair is stackable, possible to hang on a table and linkable.
Different researchers’ literatures have been studied and an analysis has been made in SAMMIE to ensure that the chair has good ergonomics. This is a very important quality but often an unspoken requirement that is taken for granted.
The result was carefully evaluated during and after the building of the prototype. Kinnarps AB will also make further analysis and quality tests.
This project has hopefully resulted in a chair with good quality and a potential to participate in the competition on the market.

Full textAbilia develops, manufactures and sells aids for people who have either a physical or mental limitations that affect their everyday lives. In order to save money and get a better uniformity Abilia want to standardize the packaging and develop a flexible interior that can be adapted to many of the company’s products. A pilot study laid the foundation for the project where many different areas and methods were examined. The existing packages were evaluated, and their and the products lifecycles were identified and that made it clear who the projects user was. They were interviewed and a product specification could be established. The pilot study resulted that it was two groups of products and the solution must be able to adapt to both. The solution must also be flexible to the products and their accessories. The Hjälpmedelscentralerna turned out to be the users in this project and they had requirements that the solution must be sustainable and provide a more structured inside of the packaging. Concepts were generated with a practical idea generation that resulted in different forms and constructions. The concept selection was made after discussion with the staff from Abilia and through a balanced concept selection matrix. The project resulted in a flexible and durable interior in two parts. A product presentation part which has a design with folddown flaps that allows the product to get stuck no matter which size and a flexible accessory which can be adjusted both vertically and horizontally. The solution fulfills the requirements from the product specification and has been verified by expert that it would work in real situation. The material in the solution is the best suited for the function and it is also the material with the lowest environmental impact of those surveyed in the project.

Full textDuring the spring of 2014, Aldin Sumic and Andrea Slaattelia Larsson, two product design engineer students at University of Skövde carried out a product development project in cooperation with the company AB Germa. The aim of the project was to develop solutions to a conceptual "vacuum-scoop" by using Germas existing vacuum technology that is used to immobilize a patient with suspected spinal injury and integrate it into the existing scoop stretcher with its function to "scoop" a patient from the accident site. The aim of the project was also to reduce the number of patient transfers and to improve safety and quality in the rescue. One of Germas strategies, to compete on the market, is to launch two new products annually. Therefore, it was more desirable that, during the mission, bring out many ideas, gladly innovative ones, than get a fully functional solution in the end. The mission was carried out according to the product development methodology set based concurrent engineering to achieve this. Working with the methodology resulted that solutions were investigated and developed in parallel and were eliminated gradually if they, for some reason established deficiencies. The mission begins with a preliminary study and empirical data gathering, which included literature review, interviews and site visits to gain deeper knowledge of the subject. Using this, the functional analyzes and the standard EN-1865 the work was detailed and a set of requirements were made. Then an idea generation session started using various creative methods and complement. The drafts from the idea generation were of different character and quality. A selection session was used on a variety of ideas for distinguishing concepts which resulted in that the concept was excluded, grouped in terms of similarity or combine. Finally, there remained three working concept. The authors chose ignore the product development methodology to develop and detail design one of the three concepts for the final presentation - the concept that became known as the vacuumskop (vakuum scoop).

Full textDuring the second semester of 2013, product design engineering students Stefan Erlandsson and Louise Andersson have been involved in a project in cooperation with entrepreneur Lars Willebrand. The main objective of this project has been to develop a lifting tool for sheet materials. The lifting tool is one of four different products developed by Lars Willebrand. The line of products also includes an overhead crane, a slewing crane and a storage drawer for metal sheets, which are already fully developed and ready for production. The purpose of this lifting tool is to be used along with the storage drawer which means that is has to be optimised for lifting sheet materials from different heights. This means that the lifting tool has to be designed with regards to the users working postures. Human factors such as ergonomics have to be taken into account as well. The initial part of the project is a pre-study with focus on ergonomics and human factors. This pre-study included a study in relevant literature, contact with a manufacturing company and an analysis of the possible competitor’s lifting tools. The results from the pre-study have further been used to define the specification of requirements, which is the foundation for the concept development. The concept development has undergone a number of different phases. All of the lifting tool’s main functions were broken down and developed individually. The functions were as follows; adjustment of the suction cups, lifting from different heights and handling. The most suitable solution for each main function were chosen and assembled into one final concept. The final concept has been analysed and further developed in order to please the employer and the users of the lifting tool. Some details in the design have been changed in order to ease the manufacturing of the lifting tool. To ensure that the final concept matches the specification of requirements, strength calculations and FEM analysis have been made and anthropometrical measurements have been taken into account. The final chapters include a discussion and recommendations for further development of the lifting tool.

This report covers the result of a final thesis in Product Design Engineering, in partial fulfillment of the Product Design Engineering program held at the University of Skövde. This report describes a project that was carried out in conjunction with Lundbergs Möbler in Tibro.
The objective of the report is to convey the design process of integrating a table leaf into a Lundbergs dining table. The report will also present the product as it goes through the whole design process from idea, materializing in a prototype and concluding to a final concept/product.
A pre study displays an overall view of product handling and current market solutions of today's table leaves, where handling issues and ergonomics of table leaf usage is illuminated. The information from the pre study has determined the feasibility of the project and has also been utilized as a foundation for a project specification upon which further product development can commence.
With the information from the pre study as a foundation, the idea generation phase could begin. Different creativity methods are used to bring forth several innovatory ideas that can be utilized in improving the product. These ideas were improved on and evaluated to result in three different concepts. These concepts were then presented to Lundbergs Möbler who went through them and decided which concept to go forward with. Conceptual matrices were then used to steer further development of the product.
When the concept was developed to satisfaction a CAD-model and a physical prototype has been built from the specifications and measurements from the CAD program. The prototype demonstrated the function of the mechanism that had resulted from the project. The prototype that resulted from integrating a table leaf in a dining table gave a functional mechanism that could be taken into production.

Full textDuring the Spring of 2012 Pedersen and Birkehag, two product design engineering students at University of Skövde, carried out a product development project in cooperation with Handicare AB. The aim of the project was to upgrade QuickMove, the current standing-up and transfer aid used in health care and developed by Handicare. The goal of the project was to maintain the functions and safety features of QuickMove while creating new innovative solutions and lowering the transportation and manufacturing costs. The product development process was iterative and started with the research of customer requirements, which involved user studies and interviews. The customer requirements specification is based on customers’ needs and was used as guideline throughout the product development process. Ideas and concepts were generated with various creativity methods. A full scale model was built with VP-pipe and duct tape. Evaluations and tests were performed on the model and further developments were carried out. To analyze the result a visual model was built with the software SolidWorks. Strength of materials analyses, material selection, development, design, cost and ergonomics were all taken in consideration and a final concept was elaborated. The result was an upgraded aid named UpAway. This aid contains fewer parts than QuickMove and will reduce transportation volume by 75 percent. The newly developed design of UpAway, adapted to customers’ demands, will generate customers’ interest and according the students thus result in a broader market both in Sweden and worldwide.

Full textDuring the spring of 2013, Emilia Andersson, a student in product design engineering at University of Skövde, carried out a product development project in cooperation with HAGS Aneby AB. The aim of the project was to develop a seesaw adapted for children aged 1-3 years. The goal was to develop a seesaw that could be sold worldwide and meet the American standard and European standard for playground equipment. The project began with a pre study and a theory phase, which included literature review and competitor analysis and information were gathered to gain a deeper knowledge of the subject. Later on ideas and concepts were generated, which then through evaluations as user testing lead to a final concept. The concept was evaluated with for example strength calculations and an anthropometric analysis. The final seesaw can, despite adjustment for the age group, not only be use by 1-3-year-olds, but also by older children, this thanks to the design and the handles that provide extra play values.
