Full textThe design of topographic maps of reference is characterised both by an increasing amount of reference geographic databases and by design geo-services operating in distributed architectures. In this context, one of the major challenges consists in enriching the current knowledge on cartographic design in order to preserve the maps quality, i.e. they are legible, effective and usable. We assume that the topographic style renders maps legible and effective thanks to the visual codes and guides, well-known by the users. Our research purpose aims at formalising the concept of a topographic style as a cartographic family with a recognizable visual signature in order to produce new topographic maps.We propose to formalize key concepts of visual signature and cartographic family in a unified model. We validate and instantiate this model in setting up interviews of cartography experts and in designing user’s experiments allowing to evaluate the visual recognition of maps and graphic signs belonging in Swisstopo and IGN-France cartographic families. With results of the two user’s experiments, we characterize the visual signature of the two cartographic families. Then, we propose cartographic design guidelines in order to produce reference topographic maps based on the characterisation of the visual signature for two cases studies: (1) design a map belonging in a given cartographic family, (2) design a map on the border of two countries / two national mapping agencies

Full textFor more than two centuries now, researchers from different backgrounds and disciplines have started studying and making topographical surveys of the Parisian underground. These different ways of studying urban thickness all inform this thesis. They are all analyzed from their very origins, which are often closely linked in an urban context. These methods include: geology, hydrology, archeology, topography, and what is currently called urban engineering. Urbanism, although it is often described as “the science of spatial organization in cities”, can seldom yield as much temporal and spatial information as these various approaches can when put together. This thesis proposes to present and quantify several long-term evolutions, traced through a series of “urban measurements” performed over time by a Geographical Information System, which was designed for the purposes of a diachronic study. The system here specifically targets urban verticality. It has resulted in the creation of many original maps of ground and ground-water movement.Based on these maps, which include historical, environmental and tridimensional topography, two analyses are then conducted. The first deals with understanding the construction of an urban project in the 19th century - up until the “grands travaux” - by looking at space measurement and available representations. A specific chronology is then proposed. The second analysis offers to compile information concerning the thickness of the urban underground and its evolution through time. This could then dispense information to urban databases, many of which are currently based on an urban space fragmented by plots. The model thus built serves to contribute and to give new research perspectives, to the study of Parisian preindustrial morphology, and industrial archeology, and more generally the urban approach of the layer - known in geological and environmental contexts, but which has yet to be defined from a statigraphic point of view - under the name anthropocene

Full textThe question of urban design of the future is one of the important and critical issues of our society. The global warming, the biodiversity at risk, the economic/social/cultural transitions, the predictions of a significant increase in the urban population, the changes in transportation patterns, and changes in urban forms, to quote only a few... All these questions are at the heart of current issues and are part of the constraints we must face in the urban design of tomorrow. Faced with such a situation, it seems risky today to continue to think of the city with approaches or design processes that are based on yesterday’s realities. As Albert Einstein puts it, "we cannot solve our problems using the same way of thinking that we had when we created them". The environmental issues (global warming, biodiversity, etc ...) are factors of vulnerability in the current city in such a way that it is generally accepted (ScienceNet) that built environments must now , more than in the past, be designed in a way that is "respectful of the environment ". We are encouraged to develop a socially responsible and "environmentally friendly" mentality, an approach that looks beyond the immediate and individual interest to achieving stable, long-term common goals. This is only possible if we use and intelligently and fairly all the resources at our disposal, in this case our knowledge, the natural resources, the socio-economic, the geographical as well as the technological advancements. Because, if technology and digital have become of common daily used by the citizens, urban design and architectural disciplines seems however to have a hard time integrating it completely in an intelligent and systemic way as do today other disciplines such as medicine and aeronautics...This work tries to develop a methodology of urban design based on a combination of digital applications, the effort of a collective intelligence as well as ideas, concepts and techniques proposed by a handful of philosophers, historians, psychologists, architects, town planners above mentioned who marked the history of cities. It is therefore from this heterogeneous marriage of techniques and thoughts augmented by recent geospatial technologies that this research intends to base its point of view on the study of urban complexity in order to try to cope with urban problems in constant form. evolution
