Abstract We propose that the onset and progressive destructive action of cancer within an individual bears a profound and striking similarity to the onset and progressive human-engendered destruction of global ecosystems and the extinction of entire species. Cancer in the human body and our human role in planetary, especially biotic, degradation are uncannily similar systems. For starters, they are the only two known complex systems where a discrete component changes its normal ecological role and function—turning on and potentially killing its host, and in so doing, itself. An attempt to shake the established world order of Western society, based on International Law, by the waging of war, has reached its peak. This is evidenced not only by Russia’s war in Ukraine, but also by Russia’s political attempts to destabilise Moldova’s approach to Western values, along with the recent unrest in Georgia, where there is a risk of restricting individual freedom of expression, and the constant threats against the Baltic States. This paper uses the tools of robust political economy to assess a fundamental question of political theory: citizenship. Traditional conceptions of citizenship are found wanting if the criterion is the preservation of liberty and individual rights. Classical citizenship places duties above rights and civic participation over individual autonomy; in the process, it snuffs out the individual in the name of the collective. Liberal citizenship protects the individual sphere from political intrusion and thus offers great promise for civil and political rights. Alas, it contains the seeds of its own
