Theories of the Tragic – with Special Reference to the Modern Tragic and with a View to »The Hosier and His Daughter« (»Hosekræmmeren«) by St. St. Blicher:The term ‘tragic’ is often used in descriptions and analyses of modern (here: post-classical) literature. Yet, only rarely is this use sound and critically based. The purpose of the present article is to introduce the reader to the theory of the tragic – with a particular focus on possible definitions of the modern tragic.In the article, three phases of theoretical history are identified: 1) a genre-based, normative-poetological phase (classic and classicism), 2) a philosophical phase (German idealism and post-idealism), and 3) a current, more pluralistic phase (crosscutting literary criticism, aesthetics, and the history of ideas). The article’s general approach to the theories is, however, systematic rather than historical. A Nietzschean and a Hegelian line are being sketched out and contrasted, the former as a metaphysically (vertical) and the latter as a historically (horizontal) oriented theory of tragedy. The third line in the theoretical history is that of psychoanalysis.At the end of the article – using the short story »The Hosier and His Daughter« (»Hosekræmmeren«) by St. St. Blicher as an example – it is shown how the different approaches are able to throw light on a modern prose text. It is suggested that, having become a problematic genre with the breakdown of classicism, tragedy lives on as a modus within other genres, such as the short story and the novel.

Hvad er "det folkelige" og hvad er "folkekultur"? Néstor Garcia Canclini har i denne artikel sat sig for at dekonstruere begrebet "det folkelige" og beskrive den måde, forskellige grupper bruger og misbruger begrebet på. Han analyserer tre fremherskende idéer om folkelighed: folkloristernes romantiske idé om det oprindelige, der blev ødelagt af massekulturen, massemediernes popularitetsbegreb og endelig populisternes - både de højre- og venstreorienteredes - iscenesættelse af folkeligheden. Desuden ser han på to marxistiske skolers opfattelse af forholdet mellem de dominerende og undertrykte klasser og forskellige definitioner af folkelig- hed. Ligesom Anamaria Fadul argumenterer Canclini for nødvendigheden af en ny, tværdiciplinær forskning, som opfanger kompleksitet og flerty- digheder i forholdet mellem de undertrykte og dominerende og ser "det folkelige" som en tragisk komedie med modsætninger og flertydighed snarere end en evigt fremadskrivende episk fortælling. AbstractThe aim of this paper is to present the philosophical figure of a Norwegian philosopher and writer, creator of biosophy, Peter Wessel Zapffe (1899–1990), and to investigate the origins of his notion of tragedy (tragic experience) which he introduces in his magnum opus Om det tragiske (1941). I attempt to do so by searching its roots in antique theory of tragedy introduced by Aristotle, especially on the pages of Poetics, to which Zapffe himself often refers to. A study of how Zapffe “read” and understood Aristotle’s Poetics, a classical piece for the study of tragedy and tragic experience, seems essential for establishing the roots and foundations of his own vision of tragedy and its functions, finally shifting from the purely literary sphere to the biosophical level of human existence. In this paper I will focus mainly on the notion and art of mimesis, laying the basis for further detailed studies of Zapffe’s biosophical analysis of the subject.

Il topos classico del sogno premonitore rivivenel teatro tragico italiano del Rinascimento configurandosi come componente strutturale fondamentale, semanticamente pregnante, sulla quale diversi autori basano la sintassi drammatica dei loro testi. Attraverso l'analisi comparativa di cinque opere esemplari di quella stagione letteraria (la Sofonisba di Trissino, l' Orazia dell'Aretino, l' Orbecche di Giraldi Cinthio, la Canace di Speroni e il Torrismondo di Tasso), questo studio cerca di dimostrare come la rinascita della lingua tragica italiana nel Cinquecento si fondi anche sul tentativo di raggiungere una comunicazione più pienamente transitiva fra testo e fruitori, chiamati ad avanzare, per tutta la durata della rappresentazione, possibili “scioglimenti” dei nodi drammatici. Il sogno costituisce non solo un sintomo della rinnovata attenzione verso le strutture immaginative dei testi, ma anche un canale privilegiato per questa comunicazione, un momento topico in cui si tocca quella zona “liminale” dell'esperire umano dove la ragione e la logica lasciano spazio ad altre dimensioni cognitive come l'intuito e le emozioni tragiche per eccellenza della “pietà” e dell‘“orrore.”

Artiklen ønsker at undersøge, hvorledes kulturelle dynamikker udgør en faktor bag humorens historiske forandringer. Dens ambition er at levere en kulturdiagnostisk undersøgelse af nye populære sensibilitets- og socialitetsformer. Artiklen forsøger at gøre indsigter fra humorens filosofi hos S. Kierkegaard, J. P. Sartre og H. Bergson tilgængelige for sociologien ved at placere dem i en simmelsk kulturteoretisk ramme. Nutidens ironiske sensibilitetsformer forstås derved som en reaktion på det, som G. Simmel benævnte “en vækst i objektiv kultur“. Dernæst skal W. Benjamins allegoribegreb fungere som et værktøj til beskrivelse af nutidens ironiske samværs- og sensibilitetsformer. Artiklens sidste del undersøger sammenhængen mellem ironiske sensibilitetsformer (camp- og retrofænomenet) og disse fænomeners forbindelse til en ironisk fænomenologi; en “tragisk“ opfattelse af kultur.

 Bjørn Schiermer: Irony’s Culture and Culture’s Irony:
 An Investigation of Late Modern Sensibilities 
 
 The article attempts to clarify how cultural institutional dynamics contribute to historical developments in humour. This association is then used as folio for an analysis of contemporary popular forms of sensibility and sociability. The article wishes to contribute to the philosophy of humour and make it accessible for the sociology of culture by placing it in a Simmelian culture theoretical framework; a framework that attempts to understand concurrent ironic forms of humour as a reaction to the growth in, what Simmel termed “objective culture“. These impulses are then unified in W. Benjamin’s concept of the allegoric, which is intended to serve as a conceptual tool in describing contemporary social forms and sensibilities. The last part of the article consists of the unfolding of central phenomenological traits of contemporary popular culture and cultural reception (the camp and retro phenomenon) on the background of a “tragic“ or ironic understanding of culture.

Suicidium werd in het 17de-eeuwse Frankrijk, zoals elders in Europa, als een van de ergst mogelijke zonden aanzien. Dit zware taboe blijkt echter niet te gelden op de theaterscene. Met name de ogenschijnlijk conformistische auteur Jean Racine wist de tragische dood van zijn Griekse en Romeinse protagonisten tot de verbeelding te laten spreken door het theatraal oproepen van de dreiging van zelfmoord. Dit bezit een tragisch potentieel dat hij ten volle kon uitwerken. Antieke modellen die de zelfdoding van de helden verheerlijken, werden op die manier subtiel aangepast aan de strenge ethische eisen van die tijd.

Abstract:
In recent years, Hjalmar Söderberg’s novel Doktor Glas (1905) has been conceived as more complex compared to its contemporary interpretations, and has been associated with many different ideas. The novel stands the test of time and forces readers to reflect on difficult issues. However, only sporadic attention has been paid to the connection between Doktor Glas and tragedy, hidden in the form of direct references or allusions to Greek antiquity and occasional reminiscences of Greek tragedy.    Tragedy is a branch of drama and for centuries Aristotle’s Poetics offered the only definition of tragedy available. Nevertheless, renowned philosophers and thinkers have offered alternative definitions of tragedy that describe aspects of tragedy not adressed by Aristotle; the list of tragic requirements seems to change and vary through the ages and by extension the term may be applied to ”a conception of the tragic”.     This thesis explores the experience of tragedy and the tragic in Doktor Glas. That will be accomplished with four idea analyses of the novel, each one from a different ”tragic” point of view. In other words, through dialogue between the novel and the tragic conception as conceived by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche and Albert Camus in order to embody in the novel the ”image” of the tragic as created by each of the above-mentioned important philosophers and thinkers, with focus directed towards the old question of the aristotelian term katharsis. One of the main results of the present study is that from a ”tragic” point of view, Doktor Glas is remarkably modern.    The author aims to perform a divergent, still creative approach to the ambiguous Doktor Glas according to her background and previous education in the anthropocentic discipline of studies in Classical Philology.

Uppsatsens centrala tes är att tanken på den eviga återkomsten i Nietzsches prosadikt Så talade Zarathustra kan förstås som ett tragiskt ögonblick. För att kunna avhandla denna tes ställs den avgörande frågan: Vad avses med 'tragiskt ögonblick'? Jag söker syftesbestämma detta begrepp inom ramarna för den tyska idealismens tanketradition, där Schelling och Schopenhauer tjänar som exempel. Denna specifika förståelse av det tragiskas begrepp är att särskilja från genrebestämningar av tragedin.<br>The central thesis of this paper is that the thought of the eternal return in Nietzsche's work Thus spoke Zarathustra can be interpreted as a tragic moment. For proving this thesis, it is necessary to clearly understand how the concept of the metaphysically revelatory tragic moment within the tradition of German idealism differs from a genre-definition of tragedy. I use Schelling's and Schopenhauer's philosophies of art as examples of cases in German idealism where the tragic moment has been considered metaphysically revelatory. Thereupon I adjudicate whether the thought of the eternal return can qualify as such a moment.

In the 1969 Le Thor seminar, Heidegger stated that his philosophical journey could be characterized by three different themes: meaning, truth, place. The first two of these have been the subject of countless studies and discussions, but the question of place is still relatively unexplored in Heidegger’s thought, despite the increased interest for this topic in his writings. Even though scholars like Jeff Malpas, Edward Casey, Stuart Elden and Miguel de Beistegui have written books and essays on the importance of the conception of place in Heidegger’s thinking, there are still many important aspects of this theme to be discussed, given the importance Heidegger himself ascribed to this topic. In this essay, I therefore wish to pose the question of how one can understand the relation between place and the role of tragedy in Heidegger’s conception of truth. My bearing thesis will be that these three concepts: place, truth and tragedy stand in a symbiotic relationship to each other and thus form the foundation of the Heideggerian thinking of place, or topological thinking. For this reason, the purpose of this paper is to present an interpretation of how the tragic is grasped in its relation to place. This I will do by turning to three texts from the period in Heidegger’s thought which has come to be known as ‘the turn’, a period which usually is understood to have occurred in the 1930s and the early 1940s. The texts I have in mind are for one the aesthetic essay The Origin of the Work of Art, and secondly the two interpretations of the first chorus from Antigone, found in Introduction to Metaphysics and Hölderlin’s Hymn ‘The Ister’. The Origin of the Work of Art can thus be said to serve as a theoretical introduction or framework to Heidegger’s conception of truth, whereas my analysis of the two interpretations from Antigone will look closer into how truth explicitly can be said to stand in a dependent relationship to place and tragedy. This becomes particularly relevant in the part of the interpretation where Heidegger puts emphasis on the word polis, a word he understands as the place or the There where truth resides. However, one cannot write on this topic without mentioning the political problems this gives rise to, considering the time and place and by whom the texts were written. Therefore I will have an ongoing discussion of this problematic aspect in the topological thinking of Heidegger, which I will intertwine in the text. This is not to say that my sole ambition is to point out the despicable in Heidegger’s political engagement (which should be obvious), but rather to try to give a foundation for discussion on whether it’s possible to find a way to think productively on the theme of place, truth and tragedy.

The aim of this study was to examine how three newspapers covered the question of guilt while reporting about the bus accident in Sveg where three school children died. The questions examined were: How does the local newspaper Borås Tidning and Barometern and the evening newspaper Aftonbladet report about the question of responsibility of the bus accident in Sveg? What are the differences and similarities between the three newspapers? We made a discourse analysis of 23 news articles from three different newspapers. The result shows that the newspapers reported about possible reasons that caused the disaster. If the society had taken responsibility and maintained the road then maybe the bus had not crashed. The passengers are described as guilty because of their lack of using seat belts. Simultaneously the bus driver is represented as irresponsible who could have prevented the misfortune by not driving so recklessly. Another aspect of the question of responsibility produce the bus company as the scapegoat of the tragical incident because of the miserable working conditions. We discovered that the newspapers are driven by figuring out the question of guilt in order to give answers to the readers about the tragedy in Sveg. Conclusions drawn from this study are that the media coverage are influenced by news values like their proximity to the persons involved.

Föreliggande studie är en läromedelsanalys av fyra läroböcker i litteratur vilka alla är antologiersom utöver utdrag och exempel ur litterära verk även innehåller introduktionstexter, diskussionsochinnehållsfrågor till elever, samt andra arbetsuppgifter och faktatexter. Undersökningengjordes genom en kvalitativ textanalys mot bakgrund av Edward Saids postkoloniala teori ochbegreppsapparat. Studiens syfte var att undersöka litteraturundervisningens roll i återskapandet avmaktstrukturer och belysa andrafierande strukturer och konstruktionen av en utomvästerländsk”Andre” i mötet mellan västerländsk och utomvästerländsk litteratur. Detta för att kunna bidratill en diskussion om hur en mångkulturell kanon ska hanteras i skolan.Studien visade att två av läroböckerna tydligt konstruerar en generaliserande bild avutomvästerländska personer och kulturer som mer eller mindre tragiska, krigshärjade och osäkra.På grund av detta, i kombination med en viss ton av västerländsk suveränitet och antaganden omen homogen västvärld, uttolkades koloniala och imperialistiska implikationer som förstärker idénom ett stabilt västerland i jämförelse med en miserabel omvärld som det bör tyckas synd om. Deövriga två böckerna tolkades däremot som att de lyckats undvika många av dessa konstruktioneroch en mer mångsidig bild av litteraturen visas och egenheter såväl som likheter visas upp på ettsätt som kan anses motverka detta imperialistiska synsätt.Slutligen diskuterades detta fynd mot skolans praktiker och läroplan och det kundekonstateras att en lärare bör problematisera läromedlen och se till att en allsidig utomvästerländsklitteratur tas upp samt att förutsättningarna för dess produktion bör samtalas om för att undvikacementeringen av stereotyper.

Abstract:
Algorithmen bewältigen viele Aufgaben bereits zuverlässiger als menschliche Experten. Trotzdem zeigen einige Wirtschaftssubjekte eine ablehnende Haltung gegenüber Algorithmen (Algorithm Aversion). In manchen Entscheidungssituationen kann ein Fehler schwerwiegende Konsequenzen haben, in anderen Entscheidungssituationen nicht. Wir untersuchen im Rahmen eines Framing-Experimentes den Zusammenhang zwischen der Tragweite der Entscheidungssituation einerseits und der Häufigkeit der Algorithm Aversion andererseits. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Algorithm Aversion umso häufiger auftritt, je gravierender die möglichen Konsequenzen einer Entscheidung sind. Gerade bei besonders wichtigen Entscheidungen führt somit die Algorithm Aversion zu einer Reduzierung der Erfolgswahrscheinlichkeit. Das kann man als die Tragik der Algorithm Aversion bezeichnen.
