Abstract:
The determinant of a matrix is very powerful tool that helps in establishing properties of matrices. Indisputably, its importance in various engineering and applied science problems has made it a mathematical area of increasing significance. From developed and existing methods of finding determinant of a matrix, basketweave method/Sarrus’ rule has been shown to be the simplest, easiest, very fast, accurate, and straightforward method for the computation of the determinant of 3 × 3 matrices. However, its gross limitation is that this method/rule does not work for matrices larger than 3 × 3 and this fact is well established in literatures. Therefore, the state-of-the-art methods for finding the determinants of 4 × 4 matrix and larger matrices are predominantly founded on non-basketweave method/non-Sarrus’ rule. In this work, extension of the simple, easy, accurate, and straightforward approach to the determinant of larger matrices is presented. The paper presents the developments of new method with different schemes based on the basketweave method/Sarrus’ rule for the computation of the determinant of 4 × 4. The potency of the new method is revealed in generalization of the basketweave method/non-Sarrus’ rule for the computation of the determinant of n×n (n>3) matrices. The new method is very efficient, very consistence for handy calculations, highly accurate, and fastest compared to other existing methods.

Abstract:
Matrix theory is a branch of linear algebra that discussed in the mathematical sciences. Mathematical sciences play an important role in human life, it is necessary to solve problems that can not be solved directly. Thus, the problem can be transformed into the form of a mathematical model. One is the SPL (Linear Equation System). Various methods can be used to solve it. But for the SPL with a large variable can be solved by matrix methods, namely the inverse matrix. In the inverse matrix of the determinants involved. If the search value that ordo major determinant of the matrix (𝑛×𝑛), it would require an effective method. One is the method of Chio. Chio method can be applied to all square matrixas long as the element is 𝑎11 not equal to zero (𝑎11≠0). Chio method of calculating the determinant of the matrix by decomposing determinant will look into sub-determinant of degree two (2×2) using the matrix element row 1 and column 1 as pointof departure. The decomposition is performed using the following sized matrix: Keywords: Matrix, Matrix Determinant, Chio method.

Abstract:
In this paper, we present an approach for the calculation of rectangular determinants, where in addition to the mathematical formula, we also provide a computer algorithm for their calculation. Firstly, we present a method similar to Sarrus method for calculating the rectangular determinant of the order 2 × 3. Secondly, we present an approach for calculating the rectangular determinants of order m ×n by adding a row with all elements equal to one (1) in any row, as well as an application of Chio’s rule for calculating the rectangular determinants. Thirdly, we find the time complexity and comparison of the computer execution time of calculation of the rectangular determinant based on the presented algorithms and comparing them with the algorithm based on the Laplace method.

AbstractWe are concerned with the computation of eigenvalues of singular nonselfadjoint Sturm — Liouville problems by the method of determinants. The representation of a differential operator by an infinite matrix allows the use of Lidskii’s theorem to define its determinant. The finite section is then used to compute eigenvalues in a simple way. This direct method borrows stable methods from numerical linear algebra to compute a large number of eigenvalues with high precision. Numerical examples with nondifferentiable and complex valued coefficients are treated at the end.

Abstract:
The thesis is structured into 5 chapters as follows: Chapter 1 is an introduction to the tools and methods we use most frequently. Chapter 2 Pairs of k-free Numbers, consecutive square-full Numbers. In this chapter, we refine the approximate determinant method by Heath-Brown. We present applications to asymptotic formulas for consecutive k-free integers, and more generally for k-free integers represented by r-tuples of linear forms. We also show how the method can be used to derive an upper bound for the number of consecutive square-full integers. Finally, we apply the method to make a statement about the size of the fundamental solution of Pell equations. Chapter 3 Power-Free Values of Polynomials. A conjecture by Erdös states that for any irreducible polynomial f of degree d≥3 with no fixed (d-1)-th power prime divisor, there are infinfinitely many primes p such that f(p) is (d-1)-free. We prove this conjecture and derive the corresponding asymptotic formulas. Chapter 4 Integer Points on Bilinear and Trilinear Equations. In the fourth chapter, we derive upper bounds for the number of integer solutions on bilinear or trilinear forms. Chapter 5 In the fifth chapter, we present a method to count the monomials that occur in the projective determinant method when the method is applied to cubic varieties.

Jackson, Christopher. "Non-Holonomic Tomography: A Method for Assessing Various State-Preparation and Measurement Correlations." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22794.

Full text
Abstract:
The following dissertation investigates a problem related to the practice of quantum tomography, where one usually estimates the parameters associated with quantum states or measurements. In particular, the question answered is whether and how one could detect if states and measurements are correlated. A similar question answered is how one could detect state-preparation non-localities and measurement non-localities in multiqudit systems. The solution involves an analysis of certain matrix quantities called \emph{partial determinants}. Partial determinants are an application of the Born rule that can be interpreted as tomography over a loop in the space of state and measurement settings. From this perspective, the notion of state and observable become \emph{non-holonomic} | that is, state and observable parameters can be defined ``locally'' over each setting but not globally over all settings. As such, state and measurement parameters are not estimated because such estimated values don't exist in correlated systems, but rather the inability to estimate such values is quantified. Therefore, partial determinants are a measure of the amount of contradiction that would result from any claim of such a estimated values by propagating these estimates through a `tomography loop' of data collected by various experiments. Such measures of contradiction are generally known as \emph{holonomies}.

Horsthuis, Christopher. "The importance of organisational slack as an unexplored determinant of firm level innovation and performance in the construction context." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/21519.

Full text
Abstract:
Construction literature forwards innovation as a desirable objective for firms. Innovation is argued to; improve the firm s performance, increase market share, establish a competitive advantage, and ultimately ensure firm survival. Literature has overlooked the role of organisational slack within construction firms as a determinant of innovation despite the concept being well developed within the general management literature. This research uncovers and examines the impact of organisational slack on firm-level innovation as a determinant of innovation within the construction sector. This work forwards organisational slack as an unexplored firm level determinant of innovation within the construction context. Using the resource-based view of the firm, as a framework for firms, the thesis develops links between previously established firm level determinates of innovation to and slack to support its proposal as a determinant of innovation. Following this traditional measures of innovation argued fail to accurately capture innovation in the construction context, with patents represent inventions, while R&D expenditure is not applicable within the construction. Due to these failures of traditional approaches to measuring innovation, firm level performance is forwarded as a proxy measure for innovation outcomes. Developing existing slack literature, this thesis develops hypotheses proposing inverse U-shaped (n) and U-shaped (u) relationships between the level of slack and innovation outcomes. The thesis presents mixed method research. Study 1 adopts a deductive research strategy, incorporating statistical analysis to test the hypothesised relationships. The Research Design develops and Archival analysis research method; mirroring the approaches of econometric research found in slack literature. The data analysis explores two contexts: construction and manufacturing, allowing a comparative baseline to be established. The analysis of data from this study reveals that discrepancies in the R2 between the contexts is largely the result of the inability of control variables (Age, Size and Number of employees), to explain variation in firm performance (as a proxy for innovation outcomes) in a construction context, rather than the unsuitability of slack in the construction context. In construction firms, Unabsorbed Slack and Financial Slack demonstrated statistically significant results supporting an inverse U-shaped relationship with firm performance (n) supporting Hypothesis 1a and 1b. Contrary to this Absorbed Slack and Human Resource Slack demonstrated statistically significant results demonstrating a U-relationship (u) between slack and performance supporting hypothesis 2b (H2b). Study 2 adopts a deductive research strategy, incorporating semi-structured interviews as a source of primary data in order to explore the slack-innovation relationship in greater depth. Primarily, this study provided evidence to suggest that construction firms do not directly measure innovation. Instead, firms choose to measure outcomes of changes within the firm, typically in terms of measure relating to firm financial performance. Evidence from this study supports the proposal of firm financial performance as a viable proxy for innovation outcomes in Study 1. In addition to this when faced with changes to their environment, participants responses typically supported a positive linear relationship between the level of organisational slack and the firm. This research is the first to examine the impact of organisational slack on construction firm financial performance (as a proxy for innovation). This relationship is curvilinear in nature, however, the results are inconclusive if it is inverse U shaped (n) or U shaped (u) based upon conflicting evidence from different slack variables. What can be ascertained however, is that the level of slack impacts firm level performance and theoretically impacts firm level innovation.

Abstract:
Aim of the study: The aim of this study in to determine if different methods of pay arerelated to the cost of monitoring the workforce in a predictable way. Thisis done by measuring the effect of variables that are hypothesized toaffect firm’s choice of method of pay. Data and model: The data used in the study originates from the European CompanySurvey, 2009, and the countries of interest in the study were Sweden,France, Germany and the United Kingdom. By using data on differentdeterminants of method of pay, a multinomial probit (MNP) model wasfitted, using a maximum likelihood procedure. The specified, dependentvariables in the model are standard rate, individual piece rate and grouppiece rate. Results: The variables four the four countries have similar effect on the method of pay. Size has the largest impacts on the probability of the method of payamong the variables and presents a negative impact between size andstandard rate in the manufacturing industry. Interestingly, the newlyapplied variable, the proportion of fixed term contract had significanteffects in United Kingdom and may be a determinant of the method ofpay, positively related to the group piece rate scheme. Further, proportionof high skilled sector, the compared productivity to establishments in thesame sector and within the establishment and proportion of femaleworkers provides significant results for the probability of the differentmethods of pay. Conclusions: The results of the determinants of method of pay seem to be fairly in linewith the theoretical predictions in Sweden, Germany, France and theUnited Kingdom, apart from systematic differences between thecountries. The study indicates that the method of pay is, in fact, related tothe cost of monitoring the workforce in a predictable matter.

Abstract:
The dissertation thesis describes the methods of calculation of the VAT gap. VAT gap is the difference between the theoretical VAT liability in the whole economy and the accrued VAT receipts. It is expressed in relative terms to the theoretical VAT liability and it approximates the amount of the VAT evasion. The VAT gap in the Czech Republic in the years 2002 to 2010 ranges in average from 16 to 17 %. It is steadily increasing from 11 % to 26 % during the last 5 years of the relevant period. Furthermore, the thesis also analyses the determinants of the VAT gap in the EU member states in the years 2000 to 2006. The share of VAT on total tax revenues and the Tax quota were identified as main tax factors that reduce the VAT gap. On the other hand, the complexity of the VAT system, expressed by the number of VAT rates, the difference between them and the number of preliminary questions to the European Court of Justice, increases the VAT gap. Further significant factor influencing the VAT gap in the negative direction is the Corruption perception Index.

Abstract:
Enhanced knowledge of the acetabulum is of paramount importance in the diagnostic, planning, and execution stages of procedures and treatments targeting the hip joint. The convoluted and highly variable morphology of the structures comprising the bony pelvis make ascertaining measures of the acetabulum challenging. Furthermore, current methods for determining acetabular orientation assume symmetry between the separate halves of the pelvis by utilizing a coordinate system based on bilateral landmarks. The purpose of this study was to determine the three-dimensional orientation of the entire acetabulum. For this research, an improved programmatic method was developed for determining acetabular orientation using three-dimensional data. Accurate measures of commonly used acetabular orientation were ascertained from a large population of normal subjects. In addition, unilateral-based measures were performed using a new “hemi-pelvis coordinate system”. Significant differences between genders were observed in both the overall orientation of the acetabulum and the structural arrangement of the innominate bone.

Abstract:
In this thesis we investigate the recently developed Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) method. This method, unlike the traditional methods in Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC), doesn't require the use of the uncontrolled fixed node approximation and so potentially it can yield far more accurate results. This means that it can be thought of as a hybrid between the methods used by quantum chemists and QMC, and thus has spawned a new field of stochastic quantum chemistry. The work described in this thesis can be split into three distinct but interrelated parts. We begin with an investigation of the underlying FCIQMC stochastic process. We show that FCIQMC is an example of Markov Chain Monte Carlo. This means we can compute a stochastic matrix from which all details about the Monte-Carlo simulation can be obtained. Unfortunately the size of the space scales unfavourably as a function of system size meaning that we have only managed to compute the matrix for the smallest interesting two determinant system. We then use these results to quantify population control bias in FCIQMC for a two determinant system supplementing these analytical results with empirical results to investigate more realistic systems. We then attempt to quantify the efficiency of the FCIQMC algorithms, defining a measure of efficiency. After this we investigate the dependence of our measure on the system size. The error bar of the most efficient FCIQMC algorithm will decay fastest as a function of computer time. We then draw conclusions about the applicability of the FCIQMC method. Finally we describe an implementation of FCIQMC on a novel data flow computer architecture. In our implementation we made a modification to the FCIQMC algorithm to fit the data flow paradigm. We investigate the efficiency of the modified FCIQMC algorithm.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper the Riccati transfer matrix method is implemented with a goal of studying its ability to expand eigenextraction capability. A pin-pin uniform beam is used as a numerical example to demonstrate the numerical stability of the Riccati transfer matrix method in finding higher natural frequencies. The results are compared with those from analytical solution and those from the standard transfer matrix method. It is shown that the number of frequency that can be found with the Riccati transfer matrix method is dependent on the number of segments into which the beam is evenly divided. It is also shown that the Riccati transfer matrix method exhibits the infinite wrap problem, i.e, the determinant has a number of infinite wrap points, where the determinant goes from +∞ to −∞. A simple method is suggested to take care of this problem when determinant search is used to find the natural frequencies. The mathematical demonstration of the numerical stability and infinite wrap associated with the Riccati transfer matrix method is provided.

Abstract:
Abstract Two new, contrastive point-in-polygon algorithms based on the 4 × 4 determinant method are proposed. By employing the error-free computations of the 4 × 4 determinant method, the algorithms can be very robust. First, a brief introduction to the 4 × 4 determinant method is presented. Secondly, the ideas of reconstructing, in two contrastive ways, a polygon from a sequence of point data are explained and then two algorithms derived from the ideas are presented. Thirdly, characteristics of both algorithms are discussed and compared. The complete programs of the two algorithms are shown.

Preparative, extraction, and analytical methods for simultaneous determination of legacy and insensitive munition (IM) constituents in aqueous, soil or sediment, and tissue matrices. Abstract:
No standard method exists for determining levels of insensitive munition (IM) compounds in environmental matrices. This project resulted in new methods of extraction, analytical separation and quantitation of 17 legacy and 7 IM compounds, daughter products of IM, and other munition compounds absent from USEPA Method 8330B. Extraction methods were developed for aqueous (direct-injection and solid-phase extraction [SPE]), soil, sediment, and tissue samples using laboratory-spiked samples. Aqueous methods were tested on 5 water sources, with 23 of 24 compounds recovered within DoD QSM Ver5.2 limits. New solvent extraction (SE) methods enabled recovery of all 24 compounds from 6 soils within QSM limits, and a majority of the 24 compounds were recovered at acceptable levels from 4 tissues types. A modified chromatographic treatment method removed analytical interferences from tissue extracts. Two orthogonal high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) separation methods, along with an HPLC–mass spectrometric (HPLC-MS) method, were developed. Implementing these new methods should reduce labor and supply costs by approximately 50%, requiring a single extraction and sample preparation, and 2 analyses rather than 4. These new methods will support environmental monitoring of IM and facilitate execution of risk-related studies to determine long-term effects of IM compounds.
