Abstract:
Time varying flow structures are involved in a large percentage of fluid flows although there is still much unknown regarding their behavior. With the development of high spatiotemporal resolution measurement systems it is becoming more feasible to measure these complex flow structures, which in turn will lead to a better understanding of their impact. One method that has been developed for studying these flow structures is finite time Lyapunov exponents (FTLEs). These exponents can reveal regions in the fluid, referred to as Lagragnian coherent structures (LCSs), where fluid elements diver

Abstract:
This thesis investigates single pole reclosing in series capacitor compensated line. An algorithm is developed to determine the optimal dead time required for single pole reclose of circuit breakers and to reduce the randomness of reclosing time. The algorithm considers conditions of system, fault, voltage zero crossing, arc, and IEEE C37.104-2012 standard de-ionization time. This study also addresses difficulties of single pole reclose operation such as over-voltages at the line, secondary arc extinguishing time, dead time, over-voltages across the series capacitor, and negative sequence curr

Abstract:
Precise velocity and acceleration information is required for many real time applications. A standalone GPS receiver can be used to derive such information; however, there are many unsolved problems in this regard. This thesis establishes the theoretical basis for precise velocity and acceleration determination using a standalone GPS receiver in real time. An intensive investigation has been conducted into the Doppler effect in GPS. A highly accurate Doppler shift one-way observation equation is developed based on a comprehensive error analysis of each contributing factor including relativi

Alsanabani, Mohamed Moslih. "Soil water determination by time domain reflectometry: Sampling domain and geometry." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185550.

Abstract:
This work investigates several aspects of time domain reflectometry (TDR) theory and application. One of these aspects is the study of the influence of TDR probe geometries on the travel time. No change in the travel time resulted from increasing either the diameter of wire or spacing. However, we found a linear relationship between the travel time and the length of the probe for measurements in water. Also we found the reflected voltage was inversely proportionally to the incident voltage in water. Another aspect is the volume of sensitivity for the TDR which depends on the electrical propert

Abstract:
The Electric/Electronic architecture of vehicle becomes more complex and costly, self-adaption can reduce the system, enhance the adaptive meanwhile reduce energy consumption and costs. The self-adaption needs the cooperation of both hardware and software reconfigurations, such that after the software is reconfigured the automotive network continues to fulfill the time constraints for time-critical applications. The thesis focuses on the real-time network reconfiguration. It uses EAST-ADL to model a real-time automotive system with timing events and constraints, which conforms to AUTOSAR timin

Abstract:
The efficient use of nitrogen (N) fertilisers in agriculture is of great concern as diffuse losses, where N has been applied in excess of crop demand, may lead to significant environmental pollution and contribute to global warming. This thesis investigated a range of novel and emerging techniques to better enable the real-time and in-situ determination of soil N, in order to increase our fundamental understanding of soil N dynamics and improve management of agricultural soils. Microdialysis is an emerging technique which has been used for in-situ and minimally-invasive sampling of soil soluti
