Abstract:
Luther’s notion of deus absconditus in relation to deus revelatus has played a central role among Danish theologians such as Jakob Knudsen, K.E. Løgstrup, Ole Jensen and Jakob Wolf. But this emphasis on the hidden God raises difficulties in relation to God’s unity in general, and to the problem of God’s responsibility for evil in particular After dicussing two lines of Wolf’s interpretation of Løgstrup and a Trinitarian interpretation of Martin Wendte, a theological proposal is offered that integrates deus absconditus into God’s triune being, so that God’s responsibility for evil is maintained without threatening divine integrity.

Abstract:
AbstractM. Rogland has convincingly questioned the widespread translation of µακρουµεν in Luke 18:7 by “to delay or tarry” which is based on the LXX Version of Sir 35:19. He rightly draws attention to the fact that in that verse µακρουµεν is used to translate the hithpael of which refers to “restraining or controlling oneself.” Unfortunately he does not try to interpret Luke 18:7 along that line. The present article offers a supplement to his article with an interpretation of verse 7 that solves a grammatical problem and fits in perfectly with the context of Luke 18:1-8.

Abstract:
The argument referring to a hidden God, deus absconditus, is a controversial but crucial point in the theology of Martin Luther. A key issue for Luther is the very distinction between the revealed and the hidden God, which prevents abuse and domestication of God’s name and authority. However, this topos can also be seen as a place of origin for modern atheism, as discussed by Hegel, Nietzsche, and Heidegger. The claim of God’s hiddenness introduces a destruction of traditional metaphysics, and hence a radical reconsideration on anthropology, texts, and phenomena. The author analyses this topos of thought in modern philosophy, from Pascal and Kant to Jacobi, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Derrida. He argues that the notion of deus absconditus remains a highly questionable place within philosophical discourse, but therefore also represents a continuous questioning of the intellectual premises for late modern atheism.

Abstract:
‘Truly, you are a God who hides himself, O God of Israel, the Saviour’ is a verse which has long held a fascination for theologians. Aquinas, Luther, Brunner, and Barth all speak of a deus absconditus. They all, especially Barth, stress that the main characteristic of God is that he reveals himself. His hiddenness is, therefore, only a means to that end. Faith is necessary before anyone can gain knowledge of God. So Ulrich Simon in his commentary on Second Isaiah, a commentary with a markedly Barthian flavour, takes Isaiah 45:15 as the voice of the nations as they experience what he calls ‘Messianic action’. He writes:

Abstract:
The Regret of God. On the theological relevance of God as subject of the Hebrew verb nhm Professor JA Heyns and others regard God's 'regret' of His own plans or actions in the Old Testament, expressed by the Hebrew verb nhm, as part of the dogmatic problem of ‘anthropomorphism’ against general presupposition like His immutability. However, an exegetical investigation indicates that this virtual aporia as well as the supposed polysemy of nhm, i.e. ‘regret’ and ‘comfort’, is mainly caused by our own unspoken ‘ontological’ and therefore ‘absolute’ and ‘objective’ view on God. In a non-ontological perspective, focusing on concrete relations, the ‘regret’ of God must on the contrary be seen as expression for the stability and continuity of the deus absconditus towards humankind.

This study is dedicated to the knowledge of writer Franz Kafka’s literature, under the egis of the religious mystic interpretation. In order to accomplish this goal, Franz Kafka’s biography is presented, to allow his “personality enclosed by a glass wall” to be accurately exposed. Kafka’s life and work are so inextricably combined that it would not be possible to appropriately enlighten his literature without previously understanding his conflicting relationship with parents and girlfriends, as well as his difficulties with work – done with anxiety and discouragement – and with Judaism, basis of his family formation. Following this, this study comprehends analytical multiple visions, emphasizing the hermeneutic polissemy and difficulties of univocally understanding Kafka, without taking into consideration his “literature astonishment”, responsible for making him one of the authors that were mostly read and commented during XX and XXI centuries. Essential scope of the third session is offering a critical view about the efforts to interpret his writings under the religious mystic harness. For this, “Max Brod case” will be discussed and the hypothesis brought by the religions historian Gershom Scholem who presented Kafka as a heretic cabalist. Last but not least, textual hermeneutics will be made (Die Verwandlung, Der Prozess, Der Brau and Forschungen Eines Hund) under cabalistic perspective, trying to uncover Deus Absconditus who is shown in Kafka’s literature with the diversity of chromatic and sonorous tones as a small light shining in the dark

Abstract:
Abstract “The question of finding a merciful God. Understanding Martin Luther’s relation to metaphysics and ontology” Myrén, Anna. 2017, Master’s Thesis, 30 credits. E-mail: annamyren@live.se The Department of Theology, Uppsala University, Engelska Parken, Thunbergsv. 3B, Box 511, SE-751 20 UPPSALA, Sweden, info@teol.uu.se  This thesis examines arguments and premises for understanding Luther’s relationship to metaphysics and ontology. The main theoretical sources are firstly research that, on the one hand argue that Luther’s doctrine of justification has ontological structures and on the other treat his relation to metaphysics, and secondly sources that treat Luther’s development of theological themes and issues from a history of ideas perspective.  The thesis concludes that the arguments of Finnish Luther scholars Tuomo Mannermaa and Sammeli Juntunen are helpful for understanding the relationship between Luther, metaphysics and ontology. Their conclusions display different levels of structures in his doctrine; thematic as well as re-oriented structures of thought, showing that Luther is occupied with metaphysical and ontology and presenting strong arguments for his doctrine of justification as ontological. Luther’s doctrinal development can be understood both as a result of criticism of substance-metaphysics, as well as itself ultimately displaying metaphysical and ontological issues. Such contents in his theology should be viewed in the larger perspective of forming theology, a history of ideas context that broadens the question to one of structures of thought, involving themes, issues, forming of doctrine as processual development. However, their thematic, doctrinal focus risks not giving full account for understanding Luther’s relation to metaphysical and ontological issues. An intricacy of the question is displayed and possible to trace when Luther’s theology is addressed from systematical as well as historical perspectives. The thesis finally argues with the help of a history of ideas perspective that the theologia crucis - specifically with its concept of the hidden God, the deus absconditus – is a resource for further inquiry of Luther and metaphysics, in understanding his theology as describing reality.  Keywords: Luther, metaphysics, ontology, doctrine of justification, Mannermaa, Juntunen, themes, structures of thought, theologia crucis, deus absconditus.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an examination of Job 28 from the perspective of an aesthetic theology of the Old Testament, as represented primarily by Helmut Utzschneider. Following the basic meaning of the terms aesthetic and theology, the perception at large and the perception of God specifically are at the core of this exploration. Therefor the aesthetic form and the theo-logical content (the literary aspect and the theology, the literary aesthetic and the aesthetic theology) of Job 28 are examined although a greater focus is on the theological content. The thesis presented here is that an analysis of Job 28 from an aesthetic-theological perspective opens up a new level of understanding this chapter. The result has the potential to recover structures of life and make them more apparent, as well as to provoke their renewal in the light of the fear of God.
