Abstract:
Abstract The class of the so-called long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) is defined by their lacking coding potential and their length of more than 200 nucleotides. LncRNAs are readily detected in transcriptome analysis but have so far not been characterized or catalogued exhaustively. Although lncRNAs make up a major portion of the mammalian non-coding transcriptome, it is challenging to predict their functions due to their diversity in terms of size, sequence and biogenesis. However, several lncRNAs have already been shown to be involved in crucial cellular processes such as imprinting, regulation of cell proliferation and cellular differentiation. Their mode of action generally involves epigenetic modifications as well as transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation. Within the ICGC (International Cancer Genome Consortium)-MMML-Seq (Molecular Mechanisms in Malignant Lymphoma by Sequencing) Consortium, which aims at fully characterizing a total of 250 germinal center derived B-cell lymphomas, including Burkitt lymphoma (BL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and follicular lymphoma (FL), we conducted a search for yet unidentified genes. We here report the identification of a novel transcript, which we have named BLUT (Burkitt Lymphoma Unknown Transcript). BLUT is highly expressed in BL, with only very low expression levels in FL and no detectable expression in DLBCL. It is around 1050 nucleotides long with splice evidence for three exons, whereby exons 1 and 3 are shared between all isoforms. BLUT represents a putative lncRNA since it lacks conserved protein domains and has a splice site conservation pattern typical of non-coding transcripts. Furthermore, it is predicted as non-coding by the software Coding Potential Calculator and there was not a single peptide match between a published peptide database (Human Proteome Map) and any potential BLUT peptide (all isoforms). Moreover, BLUT shares a high sequence identity with two (so far) uncharacterized non-coding RNAs (Pan Troglodyte, Chlorocebus sabeus). We tested a cell line panel (consisting of 16 different cell lines including non-lymphoma cell lines) for BLUT expression but could only detect it in the two BL cell lines Namalwa and Raji. Cellular fractionation experiments showed that BLUT is predominantly localized in the nucleus in both Namalwa and Raji. Overexpression of BLUT in SU-DHL-4 resulted in the identification of 222 differentially regulated genes (FDR < 0.05) with a logFC of ± 0.25, among which 49 genes had a logFC of ± 0.50. Several lymphoma relevant genes were part of this list including BIN1, CCL22, CCR7, EBI3, ID2, JAG1, NQO1, and RGS1. Given its nuclear localization, we currently perform chromatin isolation by RNA purification experiments to identify the genomic regions which BLUT binds to. In combination with our overexpression data this will allow further insights into the functions of BLUT. In summary, we have identified a novel long-noncoding RNA termed BLUT, which is differentially expressed between lymphoma subtypes with a high expression in Burkitt lymphoma. Overexpression of BLUT resulted in the deregulation of several genes with known roles in lymphomagenesis. Given its predominantly nuclear localization, we are currently investigating its functions on chromatin regulation. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis explores and evaluates the drivers and performance factors of merger and acquisition (M&A) activity at Deutsche Post DHL (DPDHL). Furthermore, the “success paradox” related to M&A found in theory is addressed by analyzing how well it rhymes with the activity and performance of M&As at DPDHL. The methodology used to reach the aim can be characterized as an explorative and qualitative case study with an inductive approach. We review literature and interview stakeholders both within and outside the DPDHL group to present an in-depth view of the drivers causing M&As and factors affecting the performance of the transactions at DPDHL. Consequently, it has been possible to reach reality driven conclusions and recommendations tailored for DPDHL. We found that the success rate of M&A transactions at DPDHL is high and primarily triggered by strategic motives, such as achieving market power, acquiring capabilities, accessing new markets and to follow customers. In addition, we found that overall, DPDHL has systems and procedures that are consistent with theory findings and views of practitioners. However, we found two improvement areas for the overall success rate of transactions at DPDHL. Firstly, the biggest change for DPDHL going forward will lie within post-merger integration and management. There is a need to develop an independent, non-political, and transparent setup for M&A teams to better integrate and track performance after each transaction. The aim should be to create local ownership at all levels to better reap synergy effects. Secondly, there is a potential benefit to streamline the strategic models used to retain key people after the M&As. Moreover, relating the findings of the study to the “success paradox”, we argue that success ought to be measured on multiple motives instead of by only measuring financial outcome of deals as done historically. In our view, the inadequate measurement of M&A performance is a reason for the seemingly high failure rates found in empirical studies. It would only be logic to measure the success of something by assessing whether or not the motives were achieved, be that strategic or financial.

Grüner, Matti, and Daniel Wedberg. Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Business Studies, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-991.

Abstract:

Forskning av bl.a.

The globalisation demand more and more in governing large organizations. It is important that all employees within the organisation have the same goal however differences they have. Research from Henry Mintzberg et al. suggests that management can only influence governing till about ten percent, the rest becomes an emerging strategy. The purpose of the study is to compare DHL, Schenker AB and UPS in terms of organisational structure, leader style, business culture, rewarding system, business concept, vision, strategy and formal tools for business engineering. The study is done by a qualitative and comparative case study, based on written information to compare organisational leaders official statement in terms of business engineering. Ewing & Samuelson’s model will be used to explain the concept business engineering and dependent and none dependent variables. UPS have the highest degree of centralisation, formalisation and structuring. UPS build up the organisation around the customer and have integrated the Balance Scorecard the most. All studied objects use the Balance Scorecard for governing the organization. Schenker AB focuses on the customer, environmental and has a desire to become world leader in environmental related logistics. Schenker AB uses ten central values to align the company. DHL is presented as having the least thoroughly guided governing principles. DHL have its seven central values for governing. Culture seems to be the most important individual component in terns of governing. The business concept sets out the course and is central in the Balance Scorecard which is used actively by many companies. GRI-standard is used to collect and compare none financial ratios. It’s clear that the management are well aware about problems in controlling too precise, which is in line with Mintzbergs research. That knowledge gives the management the possibility to adapt the management and governing till having a situation that requires long term goals, not action plans.

Abstract:
The present Master thesis was written during an internship at Deutsche Post DHL Solutions& Innovations, a subsidiary of Deutsche Post DHL. The main purpose was to make a patent portfolio benchmark for the previously identified business competitors of the DPDHL group. The research questions aimed to find out how relevant the patent portfolio analysis is for comparing competitors and whether or not the results can be matched with other types of rankings. The benchmark was made using the PatentSight software tool. PatentSight allows the patent portfolio analysis of individual companies as well as groups of companies (competitors). The software tool is based on a new approach to benchmark patent portfolios called Patent Asset Index. This approach uses several indicators to measure the patent portfolios strengths. The indicators are based on relatively widely used measures of patent analysis such as the number of citations that a patent has received. However, these measures are further adjusted by the PatentSight indicators in order to prevent false results due to the difference in patents’ ages, for instance. The results of the patent portfolio benchmark and their comparison with other rankings have confirmed previous research findings that the patent portfolio analysis is a useful tool which can remove uncertainties and provide new perspectives but cannot be used as single indicator of the competitors’ strength.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to assess how would a potential deal between Deutsche Post DHL (also referred to as DPDHL or simply DHL) and Austrian Post (also referred to as Österreichische Post or simply OP) result in terms of value creation for both companies. In an era of abrupt economical and technological changes, the Transportation and Logistics sector is one of the more affected, and thus the urge to constantly adapt. The top capabilities of DHL as well as geographic proximity with OP could leverage very important efficiencies of many kinds. Common practices on valuations are used to assess the individual value of both companies, which serve as basis to project future trends based in case a merger would take place. Decreasing traditional Mail volume and opportunities in Express deliveries due to e-commerce are found to be the main factors affecting the value of these companies. Following the cautious estimation of resulting synergies, an all-cash offer of €39.2 per share was proposed, resulting in a premium on average share price of 25.1% to OP’s shareholders.
