Full textWorld War II plays a crucial role in Romain Gary’s work. Pervasive throughout his writings, it represents, for the characters, a defining moment which shapes their vision of the world. Gary places it within historical continuum as he aims to describe, floating between fiction and reality, the pre-war period as well as the following decades. In fact, the world-wide conflict haunts the memory of the survivors, both military and civilian, influencing, for some of them, the nature of their commitments in the future. Within a wide and diverse range of characters, the resistants constitute a human community in which brotherhood, born out of the struggle for a shared ideal, creates a bond that resists the passing of time and even death. There are other categories present, such as the collaborators, the Germans, the Jews, or women. For all these characters, World War II is a significant paradigm that helps them understand the world. Gary’s description follows the characters in their way towards commitment and action. These are personal journeys – including his own – described without the manichean prism or political bias, but rather with humour and even irony. The commitment of the Garian hero is an undying defence of humanism

Full textBeing open, essentially European and consisting of manual workmen (laborers employed in industry and agriculture), immigration in France is unrestrained and unlimited by regulations during the 19th century and up to 1914. But is the freedom to enter, stay and work in France always an advantage to foreigners? Paradoxically, this freedom could also, due to the absence of rules, become a means of coercion in the hands of the strongest against the weakest. The laws promulgated as from 1888 do not call liberalism in question. These are plain police measures which, nevertheless, announce the slow evolution of mentalities towards increasing control. Originally started by private initiative as from 1906, control became official since 1914, when the state started interfering in the economy and concerning itself with the foreigner's status. Acting at first to encourage immigration (19141931) in order to increase it during favorable economy period lacking sufficient labor (the number of foreigners grew from 1. 160 000 in 1911 to 2. 400 000 in 1926, that is 15 years later), the state will put the brakes on during unfavorable periods, mainly after 1931. This sudden reversal of the foreigner's status caused by economic needs, draws one's attention to the immigrant's position in France and to the uncertainty of their presence, whether in periods of liberalism or state-control, since this is based on economic variations. Consequently, haven't these foreigners, alternately "unwanted" or "welcome", proved "a good opportunity for France" generally speaking between 1848 and 1939?

Both studies include a bibliography of bibliology in france which has been elaborated through a international research program on bibliology. Text's study reveals the existin a bibliology theory since the end of a xviiith century through the apperance of a methodical vocabulary. The theory has been developped accross the xixth century around four axis : writing sciences systems, non periodic writing history, bibliography and bibliotheconomy. The development of bibliology production allowds us to identify the mouvments which seem to go with the growth of the whole production of non periodic printintings in france. Full textThe debate within the workers' movement about the relationship between war and revolution has always been of a strategic nature, even at the time of the First International. Deciding on the attitude to the war produced debates, cleavages and splits: between reformists and revolutionaries, between defeatists and defenders of the "Union sacrée", between absolute pacifists and "revolutionary militarists". At the end of the 1930s, as the world once again rushed towards a conflict on a global scale, the actualization - or repetition - of Lenin's approach during the First World War (revolutionary defeatism) was at the heart of the analyses and perspectives debated by revolutionary minorities. This research aims to establish the data for the theoretical debate and political and programmatic orientation within the Fourth International (FI) and the heterogeneous archipelago of left-wing socialism. These two political currents were trying to build an alternative to reformism and Stalinism and were the ones where the possibility of a revolutionary outcome to the war was passionately debated and at least acted upon

Full textThe Theatre of Nations - Théâtre des Nations - was the unique place of confrontation of international theatrical, lyric and choreographic creations from 1957 till 1968. The biggest festival of theatre in the world concentrated forces able to perpetuate the values of theatre and to change the structures of theatre directory in depth. After the traumatism of World War II, this Festival contributed to launch in Europe a will of opening to the world. By welcoming authors challenging their visions on the Parisian stages, it confirmed the actuality of an international community of theatre. Barely known at the time, most of these authors are today the grand masters of the XXth and XXIst century. By receiving also revolutionary creators, the festival blew a wind of youth and freedom forecasting May 68 events. The analysis of previous similar attempts helps to understand the context of its emergence and the definition of its three missions which allowed exploring in eleven years an endless field of culture for the benefit of the professionals, the artists and the audience: the discovery of the major traditions coming from four continents, the research of new forms of scenic arts, and the consecration of the most prestigious theatre companies. A sociological and historical approach helps also to analyze this phenomenon which was involved in the biggest questions of its time, among them the after war resumption of political and diplomatic relationships, and the recognition of the rights of artists born in totalitarian countries or ancient colonies. The most international of all international festivals remains what it always was, a challenge to the world

Full textThis thesis deals with the representations of the Second World War found in the French novels published between 1945 and 1960. It aims to shed light on a body of works that depict a “failed war”, unlike the epic vision which prevails in the post-war period. It analyses from an aesthetic, ethical and political perspective twenty novels or so which portray war as an unreal, elusive experience shared by French people. The first part of this work scrutinizes the way writers depict the failure of war. These novels portray the conflict as both spectral and brutal – seen from a distance, almost always mediated, concealed under the appearance of peace, yet unescapably destructive. These novels also throw light on the failure of community. A far cry from the seminal, unifying narrative of the epic, they start attacking the myth of France as unified in the war effort very soon after the end of the conflict. The second part of this thesis looks at the ways they construct the image of a torn or passive nation, as if they were France’s guilty conscience. This study will finally examine the way the novel “thinks”, how it was specifically used to convey a specific reflection on community. Against the discourses of literary Resistance, then Existentialism, it questioned the primacy of rational thinking in men; against the prominence of documents, it embraced fiction as a means to explore dark territories; against the calls for exemplariness, it constituted itself as an autonomous space to investigate the war, as well as to challenge the failures and shortcomings of the epic discourse

Full textThe aim of this thesis is the study of fights directed by regular troops in the mountains of western alpes during battles of the second world war, in june 1940 and 1944-45, as well as regular fights lead by the french resistance in the glieres and the vercors. The gerilla operations lead by resistants and their repression by italians, germans and vichy's forces are excluded. This thesis must be used for the study of "combat en mode degrade", directed by ura 1019 of the french cnrs. In this respect, the analysis of fights ont the alpes during the second world war is topical. It anable to understand the shortcomings of defense systems elaborated in peace time for the war in mountain, and therefore, to state the rules of fight in mountain zone. This thesis included an introduction, three parts and a conclusion : - the introduction exposed the geopolitics of western alpes ; - the first part is a presentation of the battle of the alpes in june 1940, on the "maginot alpine" against italians, on the backwards of the french army against wehrmacht. - the second part is a presentation of the fights in glieres (februarymarch 1944) and vercors (june-july 1944). - the third part is a presentation of the liberation of alpes valleys

Full textThis PhD dissertation analyses how the homefront propaganda the United States population was subjected to during the Second World War was important in shaping the evolutions the American society went through during the second half of the twentieth century. As the generations which had grown up in the US during the Great Depression then participated in a way or another to the national effort during World War II led the country through some of its most important historical milestones in the latter half of the century, prompting the “Greatest Generation” nickname, analyzing the influence of the messages these populations were subjected to during the war as well as considering the historical and cultural roots of these messages appear particularly both interesting and important, especially as this war was, more than any other was before, a war of images. This study develops three main angles. First, the way other populations (enemies, allies but also the civilian victims of the war) were represented to the American people, as constructing such images was all the more important in a context where isolationism still played an important role. Then, the way an imagery linking the soldiers “over there” at the front to the home front was built, and how both themes coexisted in many messages. Finally, the way propaganda messages of the time were linked not only with the then-present sacrifices but also with hints at a new society in the post-war period – provided of course the war was won

The destroying action of the national-socialism and the catholics resistance are at first related. Then, the curriculum vitae of the principal personnages responsible for the catholic youth are listed. Two of them the lord bishop of the diocese, bornewasser and lord ludwig wolker, "the boss" of haus altenberg, the main center of the youth work, marked, by their action, their passing at the top of the clergy. Full textThe dissertation aims at relativising the commonly accepted notion that school psychology was necessary to the transformation of the school system in which access has become generalized and where the number of "children having difficulties in adaptating" has been on the increase since the emergence of modem societies. School psychologists recruited from 1945 on wards in order to grapple with that was perceived as a priority educational issue met with resistance from teachers not sharing this perception. With this divergence in mind, archives were consulted and interviews held with psychologists to account for the problematic development of school psychology in France as regards the emergence of the special education sector in particular. The conclusion shows, especially, the practices of school psychology and the field of special education whose growth was significant between 1945 and 1965. Full textThis thesis in comparative literature aims at studying the literary myth of Atlantis, through its historical development and the way it's been perceived by western imagination, from its original written source (Timaeus and Critias by Plato) to World War II. It consists in describing the fertility and constant renewal of a mythology at the crossroads of literature, science and philosophy. It deals with a prose fiction corpus published in three languages, French, English and German. Studying the Greek myth diachronically, allows us to determine the permanent and the varying features of an image (fortunate island), of a dramatic design (war and cataclysm), and of a main theme (the return to origins). This thesis focuses on the recurrence of narratives which combine elements of scientific inquiry, initiation quest and moral teaching. It lays emphasis on the way the symbols of fall and regeneration produced adaptations which were quite diversified aesthetically as well as ideologically

Full textThis inquiry provides a general framework for a sociological analysis of situations of exile. It focuses on the case study of French refugee intellectuals who fled to the United States during the Second World War. Archival research in both countries made it possible to reconstruct the transnational networks of emigration and the emerging and fragile institutional setting of the exiles. A biographical database of these refugees was built. Their social characteristics are thus systematically related with the diverse and successive experiences of exile, from the flight to a possible return home. Three types of exiles have been isolated : the patriot; the suicidal; the cosmopolitan. The respective weight of these figures in the professional fields of exiles enables us to explain the form social invesments takes during the crisis, the political orientation of the refugee intellectuals and the overall rupture of the emigration with its country of origin

Full textThis is an exploratary research carried out in a rural context aiming at the understanding of what the survivants remember of such a critical experience as the second world war, forty years after to end. The analysis of the memories collected follows two main axes: a) the study of the memory - message per se (thematic analysis pointing to some social phenomena that resulted from that war, topo- graphy of these memories, localisation of social groups carrying this memory, research on the relationship existing between the memories and the experience of the war, study of the form of this memory and b) the study of the memory-message in correlation with the sex, the age and the education level of the narrators. This research also examines the question whether this oral memory is a collective one. Finally, some hypotheses are suggested concerning the transmission of this memory and its functions within the present context of the community studied

Full textThe Second World War saw in Japan a massive production of war stories, today widely forgotten. These texts are caught between the injunction made to writers to participate in the national effort, and the general notion that they cannot grasp the reality of war. This thesis aims to demonstrate that it is in the negotiation of this paradox within the texts that the Japanese literary world conceived and recognised its war literature. The plan distinguishes three successive moments, in order to reflect both the changing modalities of writers' engagement in the war, and the different writings that accounted for them. The first part deals with the first year of the conflict, during which the Japanese media employed the writers as special correspondents on the Chinese front; their reports show the quest for a specific value of writers' experience. The second part (1938-1941) focuses on the phenomenal success of the ‘soldier-writer’ figure, and its consequences on the writing of the war. The publication of infantry corporal and Akutagawa Prize laureate Hino Ashihei’s diary seemed to offer a model of purification of literature by combat that disqualified the institutionalised writers. The third and last part deals with the ‘requisition of scholars’, during which the army forced close to a hundred writers to leave for the new Japanese colonies in the Pacific. Critical successes that emerged from this unprecedented coercion system are marked by an ostensible will to produce genuine literature through the war

This work is also about a recentralisation by the Paris-based authorities ; it allows for understanding to what extent central administration and prefectoral habits and their reluctance to changing made any idea of regional power, hypothetical. During the Second World War, Human Rights were overall maintained in both England and Wales and in Palestine under British Mandate. This enabled probation services to continue their activities. At the same period, the projects for the establishment and development of probation services were halted in occupied France during the Vichy regime. In the three jurisdictions, juvenile supervision played a key role in the development of adult probation. The period following WWII – essentially the Welfare State –, is characterised, on the one hand, by the influence of the medical model on probation and, on the other hand, by the belief that the support and assistance given to probationers was sufficient to prevent reoffending. At the end of the Welfare State, Martinson’s resounding report, marked the end of the rehabilitation ideal in anglophone jurisdictions and caused wide-spread scepticism regarding the efficiency of probation, leading to a punitive policy era. Consequently, research and practice sought new answers in order to limit this punitive turn. At the time, French probation was not involved in this debate. With regard to Israel, its strong roots in social work as well as general support for probation kept it away from a rethinking of probation. At the end of the 1970s, changes emerged in probation methods and in public services, which were similarly contrasted in the study countries

Full textMy thesis tries to delineate the frontiers and define the out put of the american film of world war ii since its birth until 1970's. From the very start the genre consisted of a set of elements that related to concept, story line and film-making. I am basically interested in the development of the genre as it is expressed through three main stages that are interrelated first on a temporal level and second on a historical level. I have tried to spell out the changes undergone by the genre and which have served to develop it, then i have shown the magnitude of the influences that have been exerted on the genre and which have enabled it to survive
