Abstract:
This thesis theologises with the contemporary devadāsīs of South India, focusing in particular on the Dalit girls who from childhood have been dedicated to the goddess Mathamma and used as village sex workers. Firstly, chapters one and two situate the context for theologising by outlining the discriminatory practice of caste and the place of the Dalits, noting in particular the plight of Dalit women. From here it explores the socioreligious identities of the contemporary devadāsīs that have been transformed and degraded as a result of a multitude of hegemonies, to the extent that the existenti

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Written in the form of an historical fiction, this thesis explores the multiple influences that were active in the lives of temple dancers in Southern India from 1861 to 1947. It addresses the question of whether or not the devadasis were prostitutes, placing this debate in the context of conflicting colonial, Hindu and reform movement pressures, influences directing the decline and disappearance of the temple dancing tradition. In gathering information about this period, I have drawn from three main sources: colonial literature of the time, modern feminist research, and dance scholarsh

Abstract:
This thesis examines the figure of the devadasi, or temple dancer, a familiar trope in European travel literature and art from 1770 to 1820. Comprised of two parts, the critical component of the work analyses the representation of the figure of the devadasi through a close reading of a selection of eighteenth-century texts. Historically specific and anchored within travel writing and post-Saidian Orientalist theory, I argue that despite the limitations of these accounts, in both form and content, they shed light upon the complex cross-cultural interactions of the period. Abstract:
The dance style called Oḍissī today is the result of the Indian cultural revival of the twentieth century, during which teachers, talented dancers, scholars and researchers dedicated themselves to the discover and the study of manuscripts and in general literary, poetic, pictorial treatises, regional temples and iconography. Following the cosmological triad of sṛṣṭi, sthiti and pralaya, this work identifies three stages of Oḍissī dance: creation, transmission and transgression. This fieldwork in Orissa is deeply rooted in the Indian traditional context of the classical dance learning, the guru
