Abstract:
Abstract. Some form of training is often necessary for citizen science projects. While in some citizen science projects, it is possible to keep tasks simple so that training requirements are minimal, other projects include more challenging tasks and, thus, require more extensive training. Training can be a hurdle to joining a project, and therefore most citizen science projects prefer to keep training requirements low. However, training may be needed to ensure good data quality. In this study, we evaluated whether an online game that was originally developed for data quality control in a citizen science project can be used for training for that project. More specifically, we investigated whether the CrowdWater game can be used to train new participants on how to place the virtual staff gauge in the CrowdWater smartphone app for the collection of water level class data. Within this app, the task of placing a virtual staff gauge to start measurements at a new location has proven to be challenging; however, this is a crucial task for all subsequent measurements at this location. We analysed the performance of 52 participants in the placement of the virtual staff gauge before and after playing the online CrowdWater game as a form of training. After playing the game, the performance improved for most participants. This suggests that players learned project-related tasks intuitively by observing actual gauge placements by other citizen scientists in the game and thus acquired knowledge about how to best use the app instinctively. Interestingly, self-assessment was not a good proxy for the participants' performance or the performance increase through the training. These results demonstrate the value of an online game for training. These findings are useful for the development of training strategies for other citizen science projects because they indicate that gamified approaches might provide valuable alternative training methods, particularly when other information materials are not used extensively by citizen scientists.

Abstract:
The paper further developed the method of predicting the success of the implementation of scientific IT projects based on the analysis of their characteristics. The paper argues for the need to deepen the analysis of requirements, the dependence of the success of the scientific IT project on the requirements, the relevance and importance of the ability to assess the possible success of the project based on requirements, and the need to support the developer and the customer, which now are guided in making such a choice only by the cost and duration of the project, as well as their own intuition. The developed method consists of: neural network prediction of project characteristics based on requirements analysis; interpretation of the obtained relative values of the project characteristics on the basis of the integrative project indicator; assessing the degree of success of project implementation on the basis of an integrative project indicator; predicting the category of success of scientific IT project (successful, challenged, failed) based on the degree of success of the project implementation. The input data for the developed method of predicting the success of the implementation of scientific IT projects based on the analysis of their characteristics is a set of indicators form the requirements, and the result of the method is a conclusion on the category of success of project implementation, which allows making an informed choice of the project for further implementation. The developed method differs from the known ones in that it allows to predict the success of project implementation, to compare projects comprehensively according to the main characteristics and the predicted success of project implementation (and not only by cost and duration, as it happens now) and to make a reasonable choice of project for further implementation.

Abstract:
The changing project environment does not allow to detail or estimate all desired employee behaviors. We contend that to increase project outcomes, it is valuable for managers to create a context in which project members willingly help colleagues perform their tasks, beyond what is required. The current study’s objectives are to investigate whether these project members’ backing up behaviors influence success and can be brought about by project culture. We support the model utilizing 219 project members (project participants) in 69 projects, from various industries in the USA. Results imply a plunge in members’ backing up behaviors can indicate project failure. Owed to restrictions facing project managers, in terms of control over compensation and employee availability, results imply that project culture is a useful substitute lever to manage members’ backing up behaviors, which in due course can propel project success. Practical implications for managing backing up behaviors in order to augment project success are provided.

Abstract:
Within the scope of the project “New forest stand map” an operational procedure was developed to derive automatically forest stand parameters from airoborne laser scanner and satellite data. Those stand parameters were development stage, species combination, crown cover and standing timber volume. Optional were number of trees, dominant tree height and others. The degree of automation is high. The automatically delineated stand boundaries were visually controlled and corrected. All stand parameters were then derived completely automatically. The applicability of the procedure developed was demonstrated with three test sites containing 3000 ha of forest. The “New forest stand map” was developed as a saleable product. The procedure is robust regarding varying data situations and forest conditions.

Abstract:
Project managers are concerned about completing the projects on time and cost. IT projects across the globe are notorious for their time and cost overruns. This paper presents output from a comprehensive study on software development risk and project outcome with respect to the projects executed by software companies in India. Based on the data collected from over 300 projects, the authors developed a discriminant model for predicting the project outcome category based on risk scores of a project. The discriminant models developed are seen to possess adequate prediction accuracy to be used in practice. The models can help the project managers in early detection of likely project failures and hence to initiate appropriate counter strategies.

Abstract:
Success in the performance of construction projects can be substantially enhanced if plans are formulated more realistically, ahead of time. Planning includes identifying project activities, required resources, interdependencies, and also recognizing the uncertainties in the duration of activities. Inherent features of construction projects, such as high repetition, complexity and uniqueness on the one hand, and advances in technology and methodologies on the other, create more difficulties in planning construction delivery. This is true for bridge operations. This study presents an innovative incremental beam launching method with twin truss gantry. This construction method has significant advantages in terms of cost and speed of performance, but increases the level of planning and management required for the bridge operation. Further, because of the newness of the method, no specific Work Breakdown Structure nor conceptual framework has been developed as yet. The aim of the current study is to explore the use of a simulation-based tool (EZStrobe) to facilitate the planning and management of a bridge construction operation (case study). The process followed in the development of a conceptual framework for the case study project is described. An Activity Cycle Diagram is produced alongsidethe conceptual framework and process models, with the intent of illustrating the key steps in the simulation modelling method. The developed models could assist in scheduling and controlling inherent construction features such as uncertainties, complexities, and repetitions in bridge construction projects, consequently improving their delivery.

Abstract:
The open-source software (OSS) movement is often analogized as a commons, where products are developed by and consumed in an open community. However, does a larger commons automatically beget success or does the phenomenon fall prey to the tragedy of the commons? This research forwards and empirically investigates the curvilinear relationship between developers and OSS project quality and a project's download volume. Using segmented regression on over 12,000 SourceForge OSS projects, findings suggest an inflection point in the number of contributing developers on download volume – suggesting increasing and diminishing returns to scale from adding developers to OSS projects. Findings support the economic principle of the tragedy of the commons, a concept where an over-allocated (large number) of developers, even in an open-source environment, can lead to resource mismanagement and reduce the benefit of a public good, i.e. the OSS project.

Abstract:
The rise of market globalization creates challenges for business executives seeking to pursue foreign direct investment (FDI) in least developed countries (LDC), such as Afghanistan. Multinational corporate (MNC) executives need strategies that will improve the timely delivery of minerals for mining projects in LDCs. Guided by the force field analysis theory, the purpose of this holistic, single-case study was to explore the strategies that 5 MNC executives in Beijing, China, used to improve the timely delivery of minerals associated with the Aynak copper mine project in Afghanistan. Semistructured interviews were used to elicit detailed narratives from MNC executives about their experiences to develop strategies for mining projects in LDCs. A review of company documents, as well as member-checking of initial interview transcripts, helped to bolster the trustworthiness of final interpretations. Study results included 2 themes. Theme 1 was determinants of mine investment strategies in LDCs that included an exploration of driving forces, restraining forces, neutral forces, and the effect of those forces. Theme 2 was FDI strategies for copper mine projects in LDCs that included the comparison of cost leadership strategy, differentiation strategy, and combination of cost leadership and differentiation strategies. By implementing a cost leadership strategy and best practices, MNC executives were able to achieve greater success to improve timely delivery of minerals associated with FDI copper mine projects in LDCs. Social implications include ongoing efforts of Afghan government leaders to implement effective economic policies that decrease unemployment while reducing poverty.

Abstract:
This thesis has been a study in memory management in C/C++, with practical work in finding and solving memory leaks in a large project. A background theory of C++ and memory management has been presented along with the memory problems that can arise in development in C/C++. Several topics in minimizing memory problems with using inbuilt C++ libraries and the Boost libraries have also been presented. There is also an overview of the PLC-Opt 2.2 Beta application and its inner workings. The method was to learn all about memory management and solve the memory leaks in PLC-Opt. The results showed that there were approximately 28.000 instances of memory leaks and the end result showed that approximately 700 instances of leaks remained unresolved. A list with clues of the remaining memory leaks was provided in the Future work chapter.

Abstract:

The LOIS project aims at building a radio sensor and IT infrastructure in the south of Sweden, primarily with but not limited to the goal of space observations. Signals received produce a gigantic stream of data that has to be processed in real time. Our purpose is scheduling stream computations to computation nodes in such a way that the performance requirements are met. We built a framework where different local and global scheduling algorithms can be executed and tested including a number of benchmarking programs, comparing the performances.

We will try to use a method as simple as possible. Given the results of the different local schedules as input – mapping parallel computations (tasks) to processors – along with some parameters such as the algorithm to apply and machine parameters, the framework will compute a global schedule. Moreover, the framework will visualize the results. We understand that framework as a graphic interface able to simulate the manipulation of different tasks, as well as different measurement groups. Showing the better performances is a big aid in order to improve the stream computation.

Full text
Abstract:
Earlier studies examining house pricing have mainly focused on the secondary market and have often overlooked the primary market and newly produced housing units. This paper studies the pricing strategies in the primary housing market, as that segment differs from the secondary market. By using data from one newly produced housing project, we are able to exclude a number of project-specific factors, as they are nearly identical for all observations. This allows us to focus on factors that are directly observable and require very little assessment or evaluation in our estimations of list prices, selling prices and selling times. The empirical results exhibit a close relationship between list- and selling prices, but a few factors differ significantly between the two. Such differences could indicate a misinterpretation of the market by the seller. The time-on-market model shows that a number of factors affect selling times as well. The results indicate a relationship between "mispriced" factors and their impact on the selling times, where "over-priced" factors seem to prolong the time-on-market and "under-priced" factors seem to shorten the time-on-market. By dividing the units into different price ranges, it becomes clear that high-priced housing is more difficult to price and take longer to sell. This relationship is strengthened by a degree-of-overpricing variable, which exhibits a positive sign in the time-on-market model. The effect is the strongest in low-priced units and not significant for higher-priced units. Other factors that affect pricing strategies require a broader discussion. Analogies from similar consumer good markets indicate that pricing strategies are dependent on the types of customers in the target groups as well as the stage in the project life-cycle.

Paynter, Robin A., Celia Fiordalisi, Elizabeth Stoeger, et al. A Prospective Comparison of Evidence Synthesis Search Strategies Developed With and Without Text-Mining Tools. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepcmethodsprospectivecomparison.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: In an era of explosive growth in biomedical evidence, improving systematic review (SR) search processes is increasingly critical. Text-mining tools (TMTs) are a potentially powerful resource to improve and streamline search strategy development. Two types of TMTs are especially of interest to searchers: word frequency (useful for identifying most used keyword terms, e.g., PubReminer) and clustering (visualizing common themes, e.g., Carrot2). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the benefits and trade-offs of searches with and without the use of TMTs for evidence synthesis products in real world settings. Specific questions included: (1) Do TMTs decrease the time spent developing search strategies? (2) How do TMTs affect the sensitivity and yield of searches? (3) Do TMTs identify groups of records that can be safely excluded in the search evaluation step? (4) Does the complexity of a systematic review topic affect TMT performance? In addition to quantitative data, we collected librarians' comments on their experiences using TMTs to explore when and how these new tools may be useful in systematic review search¬¬ creation. Methods: In this prospective comparative study, we included seven SR projects, and classified them into simple or complex topics. The project librarian used conventional “usual practice” (UP) methods to create the MEDLINE search strategy, while a paired TMT librarian simultaneously and independently created a search strategy using a variety of TMTs. TMT librarians could choose one or more freely available TMTs per category from a pre-selected list in each of three categories: (1) keyword/phrase tools: AntConc, PubReMiner; (2) subject term tools: MeSH on Demand, PubReMiner, Yale MeSH Analyzer; and (3) strategy evaluation tools: Carrot2, VOSviewer. We collected results from both MEDLINE searches (with and without TMTs), coded every citation’s origin (UP or TMT respectively), deduplicated them, and then sent the citation library to the review team for screening. When the draft report was submitted, we used the final list of included citations to calculate the sensitivity, precision, and number-needed-to-read for each search (with and without TMTs). Separately, we tracked the time spent on various aspects of search creation by each librarian. Simple and complex topics were analyzed separately to provide insight into whether TMTs could be more useful for one type of topic or another. Results: Across all reviews, UP searches seemed to perform better than TMT, but because of the small sample size, none of these differences was statistically significant. UP searches were slightly more sensitive (92% [95% confidence intervals (CI) 85–99%]) than TMT searches (84.9% [95% CI 74.4–95.4%]). The mean number-needed-to-read was 83 (SD 34) for UP and 90 (SD 68) for TMT. Keyword and subject term development using TMTs generally took less time than those developed using UP alone. The average total time was 12 hours (SD 8) to create a complete search strategy by UP librarians, and 5 hours (SD 2) for the TMT librarians. TMTs neither affected search evaluation time nor improved identification of exclusion concepts (irrelevant records) that can be safely removed from the search set. Conclusion: Across all reviews but one, TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches. For simple SR topics (i.e., single indication–single drug), TMT searches were slightly less sensitive, but reduced time spent in search design. For complex SR topics (e.g., multicomponent interventions), TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches; nevertheless, in complex reviews, they identified unique eligible citations not found by the UP searches. TMT searches also reduced time spent in search strategy development. For all evidence synthesis types, TMT searches may be more efficient in reviews where comprehensiveness is not paramount, or as an adjunct to UP for evidence syntheses, because they can identify unique includable citations. If TMTs were easier to learn and use, their utility would be increased.

Abstract:
Many urban foresters have recognized the need to incorporate climate change considerations into urban forest management, but often lack the specialized training or knowledge to explicitly address this in their planning and practices. This document describes a framework we developed and piloted in the Chicago region to assess the vulnerability of urban forests and incorporate that information into on-the-ground actions. We describe the three steps used to implement this project and the lessons learned from this process.

Abstract:
The project “Social network tools and procedures for developing entrepreneurial skills in PhD programmes” (prodPhD) aims to implement innovative social network-based methodologies for teaching and learning entrepreneurship in PhD programmes. The multidisciplinary teaching and learning methodologies to be developed will enable entrepreneurship education to be introduced into any PhD programme, providing students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to engage in entrepreneurial activities. However, the use of the output of the project will depend on the nature and profile of the research or scientific field. In this context, key performance indicators (KPIs) form the base on which the quality and scope of the methodologies developed in the project will be quantified and benchmarked. The project’s final product will be an online tool that higher education students can use to learn entrepreneurship from a social network perspective. Performance measurement is one of the first steps of any project and involves the choice and use of indicators to measure the effectiveness and success of the project’s methods and results. All the KPIs have been selected according to criteria of relevance, measurability, reliability, and adequacy, and they cover the process, dissemination methods, and overall quality of the project. In this document, each KPI is defined together with the units and instruments for measuring it. In the case of qualitative KPIs, five-level Likert scales are defined to improve indicator measurability and reliability. The KPIs for prodPhD are divided into three main dimensions, depending on the stage of the project they evaluate. The three main dimensions are performance and development (which are highly related to the project’s process), dissemination and impact (which are more closely correlated with the project’s output), and overall project quality. Different sources (i.e., European projects and papers) have been drawn upon to define a set of 51 KPIs classified into six categories, according to the project phase they aim to evaluate. An Excel tool has been developed that collects all the KPIs analysed in the production of this document. This tool is shared in the Scipedia repository.

Abstract:
This report describes the demonstration of technologies and procedures developed during April 2002 and May 2004 under the Joint Rapid Airfield Construction (JRAC) Program. The demonstration took place at Sicily Landing Zone (LZ) at Fort Bragg, NC, in July of 2004. The objective of the exercise was to demonstrate the procedures and technologies developed under the JRAC Program by rapidly building two parking aprons capable of supporting C-130 transport aircraft taxiing and parking operations. The exercise was conducted under continuous 24-hr operations to simulate a real-world rapid construction environment. Apron 1 (north apron) was constructed using two technologies, one-half being ACE™ Matting and the other half being a cement-polymer stabilized soil surface. Apron 2 (south apron) was constructed solely of a fiber-cement-stabilized soil system. Both aprons were treated with a polymer emulsion surface application to form a sealed surface against abrasion and water infiltration. The entire construction of both aprons required 76 hr, with Apron 1 finished in 48 hr. The construction of Apron 1 was validated by operation of a C-130 aircraft approximately 31 hr after completion with success and high praises from the aircraft flight crew on the stability and surface of the apron, as well as its dust-abating characteristics.
